Electronic excitation spectra from ab initio band-structure results for LaMO3 (M=Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)

X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study of Thickness Effects on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of Pr2-δNi1-xMn1+xO6-y Double Perovskite Thin Films

In this work, we report a systematic study of the influence of film thickness on the structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films of Pr_2-δNi_1-xMn_1+xO_6-y (PNMO) double perovskite grown on top of two different (001)-SrTiO₃ and (001)-LaAlO₃ substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. A strong dependence of the structural and magnetic properties on the film thickness is found. The ferromagnetic transition temperature (T_C) and saturation magnetization (Ms) are found to decrease when reducing the film thickness. In our case, the thinnest films show a loss of ferromagnetism at the film-substrate interface. In addition, the electronic structure of some characteristic PNMO samples is deeply analyzed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements and compared with theoretical simulations. Our results show that the oxidation states of Ni and Mn ions are stabilized as Ni²⁺ and Mn⁴⁺, thus the ferromagnetism is mainly due to Ni²⁺-O-Mn⁴⁺ superexchange interactions, even in samples with poor ferromagnetic properties. XMCD results also make evident large variations on the spin and orbital contributions to the magnetic moment as the film's thickness decreases.

Hybrid functionals applied to perovskites

After being used for years in the chemistry community to describe molecular properties, hybrid functionals have been increasingly and successfully employed for a wide range of solid state problems which are not accurately accessible by standard density functional theory. In particular, the upsurge of interest in transition metal perovskite-based compounds, motivated by their technological relevance and functional ductility, has incentivized the use of hybrid functionals for realistic applications, as hybrid functionals appear to be capable of capturing the complex correlated physics of this class of oxide material, characterized by a subtle coupling between several competing interactions (lattice, orbital, spin). Here we present a map of recent applications of hybrid functionals to perovskites, aiming to cover an ample spectra of cases, including the 'classical' 3d compounds (manganites, titanates, nickelates, ferrites, etc.), less conventional examples from the the 4d (technetiates) and 5d (iridates) series, and the (non-transition metal) sp perovskite BaBiO3. We focus our attention on the technical aspects of the hybrid functional formalism, such as the role of the mixing and (for range-separated hybrids) screening parameters, and on an extended array of physical phenomena: pressure- and doping-induced insulator-to-metal and structural phase transitions, multiferroism, surface and interface effects, charge ordering and localization effects, and spin-orbit coupling.

NiS--an unusual self-doped, nearly compensated antiferromagnetic metal

NiS, exhibiting a text-book example of a first-order transition with many unusual properties at low temperatures, has been variously described in terms of conflicting descriptions of its ground state during the past several decades. We calculate these physical properties within first-principle approaches based on the density functional theory and conclusively establish that all experimental data can be understood in terms of a rather unusual ground state of NiS that is best described as a self-doped, nearly compensated, antiferromagnetic metal, resolving the age-old controversy. We trace the origin of this novel ground state to the specific details of the crystal structure, band dispersions and a sizable Coulomb interaction strength that is still sub-critical to drive the system in to an insulating state. We also show how the specific antiferromagnetic structure is a consequence of the less-discussed 90° and less than 90° superexchange interactions built in to such crystal structures.

Evolution of magnetic oxygen states in Sr-doped LaCoO3

Magnetism in La(1-x)Sr(x)CoO(3) as a function of doping is investigated with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dicrhoism at the O K edge, and corresponding first principles electronic structure calculations. For small x, the spectra are consistent with the formation of ferromagnetic clusters occurring within a nonmagnetic insulating matrix. Sr-induced, magnetic O-hole states form just above E(F) and grow with increasing Sr doping. Density functional calculations for x=0 yield a nonmagnetic ground state with the observed rhombohedral distortion and indicates that doping introduces holes at the Fermi level in magnetic states with significant O 2p and Co t(2g) character for the undistorted pseudocubic structure. Supercell calculations show stronger magnetism on oxygen atoms having more Sr neighbors.

Origin of the pre-peak features in the oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of LaFeO₃ and LaMnO₃ studied by Ga substitution of the transition metal ion

We report on experimental oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra of the LaFe(1 - x)Ga(x)O(3) and LaMn(1 - x)Ga(x)O(3) series. Transition metal substitution by the 3d full shell Ga atom is mainly reflected in a systematic decrease of the pre-edge structures in the XANES spectra of the two series. This result shows that the associated states originate from the hybridization of oxygen 2p and unoccupied Fe (or Mn) 3d states. In order to gain insight into the states associated with the pre-edge spectral features, we have performed ab initio theoretical calculations based on multiple scattering theory. Simulations with variable cluster size and composition around the absorber oxygen in the LaFeO(3) and LaMnO(3) crystal structures were carried out. We find that the low-energy pre-peak is reproduced once the absorbing oxygen and the two nearest neighbour Fe (or Mn) ions are considered in the cluster. Conversely, higher energy pre-peaks only arise when the full oxygen coordination geometry around the two metal sites is taken into account, implying that their energy distance is a reflection of the strength of the oxygen ligand field. Substitutions of the two nearest neighbours by Ga atoms in the cluster of calculation lead to changes in the theoretical spectra that reasonably agree with the evolution of the pre-peaks in the experimental XANES spectra of both the series.
