Cnoidal wave propagation in an elastic metamaterial

Breather wave solutions on the Weierstrass elliptic periodic background for the (2 + 1)-dimensional generalized variable-coefficient KdV equation

In this paper, the Nth Darboux transformations for the (2+1)-dimensional generalized variable-coefficient Koretweg-de Vries (gvcKdV) equation are proposed. By using the Lamé function method, the generalized Lamé-type solutions for the linear spectral problem associated with the gvcKdV equation with the static and traveling Weierstrass elliptic ℘-function potentials are derived, respectively. Then, the nonlinear wave solutions for the gvcKdV equation on the static and traveling Weierstrass elliptic ℘-function periodic backgrounds under some constraint conditions are obtained, respectively, whose evolutions and dynamical properties are also discussed. The results show that the degenerate solutions on the periodic background can be obtained by taking the limits of the half-periods ω1,ω2 of ℘(x), and the evolution curves of nonlinear wave solutions on the periodic background are determined by the coefficients of the gvcKdV equations.

Phase transitions in 2D multistable mechanical metamaterials via collisions of soliton-like pulses

In recent years, mechanical metamaterials have been developed that support the propagation of an intriguing variety of nonlinear waves, including transition waves and vector solitons (solitons with coupling between multiple degrees of freedom). Here we report observations of phase transitions in 2D multistable mechanical metamaterials that are initiated by collisions of soliton-like pulses in the metamaterial. Analogous to first-order phase transitions in crystalline solids, we observe that the multistable metamaterials support phase transitions if the new phase meets or exceeds a critical nucleus size. If this criterion is met, the new phase subsequently propagates in the form of transition waves, converting the rest of the metamaterial to the new phase. More interestingly, we numerically show, using an experimentally validated model, that the critical nucleus can be formed via collisions of soliton-like pulses. Moreover, the rich direction-dependent behavior of the nonlinear pulses enables control of the location of nucleation and the spatio-temporal shape of the growing phase.

Modulation instability in nonlinear flexible mechanical metamaterials

In this paper, we study modulation instabilities (MI) in a one-dimensional chain configuration of a flexible mechanical metamaterial (flexMM). Using the lumped element approach, flexMMs can be modeled by a coupled system of discrete equations for the longitudinal displacements and rotations of the rigid mass units. In the long wavelength regime, and applying the multiple-scales method we derive an effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation for slowly varying envelope rotational waves. We are then able to establish a map of the occurrence of MI to the parameters of the metamaterials and the wave numbers. We also highlight the key role of the rotation-displacement coupling between the two degrees of freedom in the manifestation of MI. All analytical findings are confirmed by numerical simulations of the full discrete and nonlinear lump problem. These results provide interesting design guidelines for nonlinear metamaterials offering either stability to high amplitude waves, or conversely being good candidates to observe instabilities.

Electro-mechanical coupling diode of elastic wave in nonlinear piezoelectric metamaterials

In this investigation, the bandgaps and nonreciprocal transmission of the nonlinear piezoelectric phononic crystal and elastic wave metamaterial are studied. Analytical solutions for the wave motion equations with the electro-mechanical coupling are obtained. According to the continuous conditions, the stop bands and transmission coefficients of both fundamental wave and second harmonic are derived by the stiffness matrix method. Some particular examples are presented to show the nonreciprocal transmission of the nonlinear elastic waves. Additionally, nonlinear ultrasonic experiments are applied to verify the theoretical analyses and numerical simulations. This work is intended to be helpful in the design and fabrication of devices of the elastic wave diode with piezoelectric materials.
