Dynamical systems on large networks with predator-prey interactions are stable and exhibit oscillations

Path-integral approach to sparse non-Hermitian random matrices

The theory of large random matrices has proved an invaluable tool for the study of systems with disordered interactions in many quite disparate research areas. Widely applicable results, such as the celebrated elliptic law for dense random matrices, allow one to deduce the statistical properties of the interactions in a complex dynamical system that permit stability. However, such simple and universal results have so far proved difficult to come by in the case of sparse random matrices. Here, we perform an expansion in the inverse connectivity, and thus derive general modified versions of the classic elliptic and semicircle laws, taking into account the sparse correction. This is accomplished using a dynamical approach, which maps the hermitized resolvent of a random matrix onto the response functions of a linear dynamical system. The response functions are then evaluated using a path integral formalism, enabling one to construct Feynman diagrams, which facilitate the perturbative analysis. Additionally, in order to demonstrate the broad utility of the path integral framework, we derive a generic non-Hermitian generalization of the Marchenko-Pastur law, and we also show how one can handle non-negligible higher-order statistics (i.e., non-Gaussian statistics) in dense ensembles.

Bifurcations and multistability in empirical mutualistic networks

Individual species may experience diverse outcomes, from prosperity to extinction, in an ecological community subject to external and internal variations. Despite the wealth of theoretical results derived from random matrix ensembles, a theoretical framework still remains to be developed to understand species-level dynamical heterogeneity within a given community, hampering real-world ecosystems' theoretical assessment and management. Here, we consider empirical plant-pollinator mutualistic networks, additionally including all-to-all intragroup competition, where species abundance evolves under a Lotka-Volterra-type equation. Setting the strengths of competition and mutualism to be uniform, we investigate how individual species persist or go extinct under varying these interaction strengths. By taking a dynamical systems approach, we meticulously study how increments in these interactions create particular sequences of extinctions and find the interaction strengths threshold values in which multistability arises. Hence, we are able to elucidate interaction strength regimes where, depending on the initial abundances of the species, different extinction scenarios arise within an ecological network.

Effects of clustering heterogeneity on the spectral density of sparse networks

We derive exact equations for the spectral density of sparse networks with an arbitrary distribution of the number of single edges and triangles per node. These equations enable a systematic investigation of the effects of clustering on the spectral properties of the network adjacency matrix. In the case of heterogeneous networks, we demonstrate that the spectral density becomes more symmetric as the fluctuations in the triangle-degree sequence increase. This phenomenon is explained by the small clustering coefficient of networks with a large variance of the triangle-degree distribution. In the homogeneous case of regular clustered networks, we find that both perturbative and nonperturbative approximations fail to predict the spectral density in the high-connectivity limit. This suggests that traditional large-degree approximations may be ineffective in studying the spectral properties of networks with more complex motifs. Our theoretical results are fully confirmed by numerical diagonalizations of finite adjacency matrices.

Local and extensive fluctuations in sparsely interacting ecological communities

Ecological communities with many species can be classified into dynamical phases. In systems with all-to-all interactions, a phase where species abundances always reach a fixed point and a phase where they continuously fluctuate have been found. The dynamics when interactions are sparse, with each species interacting with only a few others, has remained largely unexplored. Here we study a system of sparse interactions, first when interactions are of constant strength and completely unidirectional, and then when adding variability and bidirectionality. We show that in this case a phase unique to the sparse setting appears in the phase diagram, where for the same control parameters different communities may reach either a fixed point or a state where the abundances of only a finite subset of species fluctuate, and we calculate the probability for each outcome. These fluctuating species are organized around short cycles in the interaction graph, and their abundances undergo large nonlinear fluctuations. We characterize the approach from this phase to a phase with extensively many fluctuating species, and show that the probability of fluctuations grows continuously to one as the transition is approached, and that the number of fluctuating species diverges. This is qualitatively distinct from the transition to extensive fluctuations coming from a fixed point phase, which is marked by a loss of linear stability. The differences are traced back to the emergent binary character of the dynamics when far from short cycles.

Influence and influenceability: global directionality in directed complex networks

Knowing which nodes are influential in a complex network and whether the network can be influenced by a small subset of nodes is a key part of network analysis. However, many traditional measures of importance focus on node level information without considering the global network architecture. We use the method of trophic analysis to study directed networks and show that both 'influence' and 'influenceability' in directed networks depend on the hierarchical structure and the global directionality, as measured by the trophic levels and trophic coherence, respectively. We show that in directed networks trophic hierarchy can explain: the nodes that can reach the most others; where the eigenvector centrality localizes; which nodes shape the behaviour in opinion or oscillator dynamics; and which strategies will be successful in generalized rock-paper-scissors games. We show, moreover, that these phenomena are mediated by the global directionality. We also highlight other structural properties of real networks related to influenceability, such as the pseudospectra, which depend on trophic coherence. These results apply to any directed network and the principles highlighted-that node hierarchy is essential for understanding network influence, mediated by global directionality-are applicable to many real-world dynamics.

Local and collective transitions in sparsely-interacting ecological communities

Interactions in natural communities can be highly heterogeneous, with any given species interacting appreciably with only some of the others, a situation commonly represented by sparse interaction networks. We study the consequences of sparse competitive interactions, in a theoretical model of a community assembled from a species pool. We find that communities can be in a number of different regimes, depending on the interaction strength. When interactions are strong, the network of coexisting species breaks up into small subgraphs, while for weaker interactions these graphs are larger and more complex, eventually encompassing all species. This process is driven by the emergence of new allowed subgraphs as interaction strength decreases, leading to sharp changes in diversity and other community properties, and at weaker interactions to two distinct collective transitions: a percolation transition, and a transition between having a unique equilibrium and having multiple alternative equilibria. Understanding community structure is thus made up of two parts: first, finding which subgraphs are allowed at a given interaction strength, and secondly, a discrete problem of matching these structures over the entire community. In a shift from the focus of many previous theories, these different regimes can be traversed by modifying the interaction strength alone, without need for heterogeneity in either interaction strengths or the number of competitors per species.
