Light-induced chaotic rotations in nematic liquid crystals

Various nonlinear rotation regimes are observed in an optically excited nematic liquid-crystal film under boundary conditions (for the light and material) that are invariant by rotation. The excitation light is circularly polarized, the intensity profile is circularly symmetric, and the beam diameter at the sample location is a few times smaller than the cell thickness. A transition to chaos via quasiperiodicity is identified when the light intensity is taken as the control parameter. Transverse nonlocal effects are suggested to be the cause of the observed dynamics, and a simple model consisting of a collection of coupled rotators is developed to provide a qualitative explanation.

Conformational Properties of and a Reorientation Triggered by Sugar−Water Vibrational Resonance in the Hydroxymethyl Group in Hydrated β-Glucopyranose

In this paper, we discuss the conformational properties of the hydroxymethyl group of beta-glucopyranose in aqueous solution and its reorientation mechanism. First, using the values for the hydroxymethyl torsion (O5-C5-C6-O6) angle obtained by our ab initio simulations, we reestimate the experimental ratio of the hydroxymethyl rotamer populations. The reestimated ratio is found to be in agreement with those previously reported in several computational studies, which probably partly explains the discrepancies between theoretical and experimental studies that have been discussed in the literature. Second, our time-frequency analysis on a reorientation in the hydroxymethyl group in an ab initio molecular dynamics trajectory suggests that, before the reorientation, the O6-H6 stretching mode is vibrationally coupled with a proton-accepting first-hydration-shell water molecule, whereas the C6-O6 stretching mode is vibrationally coupled with a proton-donating one. The amount of the total vibrational energy induced by these vibrational couplings is estimated to be comparable to typical values for the potential barriers between hydroxymethyl rotamers. To elucidate the vibrational couplings, we investigate the hydrogen-bonding properties around the hydroxymethyl group during the pretransition period. The implications, validity, and limitation of a possible reorientation mechanism based on these findings are also discussed.

Mixing properties of the Rössler system and consequences for coherence and synchronization analysis

Cross-spectral and synchronization analysis of two independent, identical chaotic Rössler systems suggest a coupling although there is no interaction. This spuriously detected interaction can either be explained by the absence of mixing or by finite size effects. To decide which alternative holds the phase dynamics is studied by a model of the fluctuations derived from the system's equations. The basic assumption of the model is a diffusive character for the system which corresponds to mixing. Comparison of theoretical properties of the model with empirical properties of the Rössler system suggests that the system is mixing but the rate of mixing appears to be rather low.

Structural Fluctuation and Dynamics of Ribose Puckering in Aqueous Solution from First Principles

Using the method of ab initio molecular dynamics, we examine the structural fluctuation and the low-frequency dynamics of beta-ribofuranose puckering in aqueous solution. Our analysis suggests that the distance between the anomeric and hydroxymethyl oxygens is a simple relevant geometrical parameter that dynamically correlates with the phase angle in the north region. The time-frequency analysis using the Hilbert-Huang transform also confirms the correlation, and most of the instantaneous frequencies for the phase angle and the above distance are found to be concentrated on the region below about 100 cm(-1). Our analysis of ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories suggests that the molecular origin of the hydration effects on the low-frequency dynamics of beta-ribofuranose puckering is closely related to this correlation and thus primarily attributed to the relatively local interactions among the anomeric and hydroxymethyl oxygens and the surrounding water molecules near them. Additionally, we discuss the difference in the low-frequency dynamics of beta-ribofuranose puckering between two hydroxymethyl rotamers.

A secure communication scheme based on the phase synchronization of chaotic systems

Phase synchronization of chaotic systems with both weak and strong couplings has recently been investigated extensively. Similar to complete synchronization, this type of synchronization can also be applied in secure communications. We develop a digital secure communication scheme that utilizes the instantaneous phase as the signal transmitted from the drive to the response subsystems. Simulation results show that the scheme is difficult to be broken by some traditional attacks. Moreover, it operates with a weak positive conditional Lyapunov exponent in the response subsystem.

On-off intermittency in chaotic rotation induced in liquid crystals by competition between spin and orbital angular momentum of light

We observed on-off intermittency in the chaotic rotation induced by a cw laser beam in a thin liquid crystal film where the spin and the orbital angular momentum of light compete in reorienting the sample. We found that the azimuthal angle phi(t) of the molecular director increased linearly in time on large time scales but, occasionally, it exhibited large fluctuations about its average value omega(0)t, so that its angular velocity phi;(t) undergoes an on-off intermittent motion. The intermittent signal omega(t)=phi;(t)-omega(0) obeyed the scaling laws of on-off intermittency, including the symmetry between laminar and burst phases. The chaotic rotations were observed only when the spin and the angular momentum of light were transferred simultaneously to the sample.

Transition from intermittency to periodicity in lag synchronization in coupled Rössler oscillators

The dynamical and statistical behavior of lag synchronization in two coupled self-sustained chaotic Rössler oscillators is reexamined. The lack of uniqueness in the conventional characterization of lag synchronization based on the similarity function has caused much skepticism about the existence of lag synchronization. We provide an evidence that the emergence of lag synchronization is associated with the transition from on-off intermittency to a periodic structure in the laminar phase distribution.

Phase locking in on-off intermittency

Dynamical behavior of on-off intermittency around chaos synchronization-desynchronization bifurcation parameter line is investigated in coupled identical chaotic oscillators. Along this parameter line, we find that on-off intermittency can transit from phase-unlocking status to phase-locking one in the phase space of variable differences, which can be regarded as a codimension-two bifurcation, i.e., combinative bifurcations of desynchronization and phase locking. In the phase-locking case, the motions of all oscillators are chaotic and they show on-off intermittency with respect to the synchronous manifold, however, spatial phase order of variable differences is clearly established.

Comment on "Intermittency in chaotic rotations"

Lai et al. [Phys. Rev. E 62, R29 (2000)] claim that the angular velocity of the phase point moving along the chaotic trajectory in a properly chosen projection (the instantaneous frequency) is intermittent. Using the same examples, namely the Rössler and the Lorenz systems, we show the absence of intermittency in the dynamics of the instantaneous frequency. This is confirmed by demonstrating that the phase dynamics exhibits normal diffusion. We argue that the nonintermittent behavior is generic.
