Synchronized patterns induced by distributed time delays

Impact of heterogeneous delays on cluster synchronization

We investigate cluster synchronization in coupled map networks in the presence of heterogeneous delays. We find that while the parity of heterogeneous delays plays a crucial role in determining the mechanism of cluster formation, the cluster synchronizability of the network gets affected by the amount of heterogeneity. In addition, heterogeneity in delays induces a rich cluster pattern as compared to homogeneous delays. The complete bipartite network stands as an extreme example of this richness, where robust ideal driven clusters observed for the undelayed and homogeneously delayed cases dismantle, yielding versatile cluster patterns as heterogeneity in the delay is introduced. We provide arguments behind this behavior using a Lyapunov function analysis. Furthermore, the interplay between the number of connections in the network and the amount of heterogeneity plays an important role in deciding the cluster formation.

Reviving oscillations in coupled nonlinear oscillators

By introducing a processing delay in the coupling, we find that it can effectively annihilate the quenching of oscillation, amplitude death (AD), in a network of coupled oscillators by switching the stability of AD. It revives the oscillation in the AD regime to retain sustained rhythmic functioning of the networks, which is in sharp contrast to the propagation delay with the tendency to induce AD. This processing delay-induced phenomenon occurs both with and without the propagation delay. Further this effect is rather general from two coupled to networks of oscillators in all known scenarios that can exhibit AD, and it has a wide range of applications where sustained oscillations should be retained for proper functioning of the systems.

Complex synchronous behavior in interneuronal networks with delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses

Networks of fast-spiking interneurons are crucial for the generation of neural oscillations in the brain. Here we study the synchronous behavior of interneuronal networks that are coupled by delayed inhibitory and fast electrical synapses. We find that both coupling modes play a crucial role by the synchronization of the network. In addition, delayed inhibitory synapses affect the emerging oscillatory patterns. By increasing the inhibitory synaptic delay, we observe a transition from regular to mixed oscillatory patterns at a critical value. We also examine how the unreliability of inhibitory synapses influences the emergence of synchronization and the oscillatory patterns. We find that low levels of reliability tend to destroy synchronization and, moreover, that interneuronal networks with long inhibitory synaptic delays require a minimal level of reliability for the mixed oscillatory pattern to be maintained.

Delay-enhanced coherent chaotic oscillations in networks with large disorders

We study the effect of coupling delay in a regular network with a ring topology and in a more complex network with an all-to-all (global) topology in the presence of impurities (disorder). We find that the coupling delay is capable of inducing phase-coherent chaotic oscillations in both types of networks, thereby enhancing the spatiotemporal complexity even in the presence of 50% of symmetric disorders of both fixed and random types. Furthermore, the coupling delay increases the robustness of the networks up to 70% of disorders, thereby preventing the network from acquiring periodic oscillations to foster disorder-induced spatiotemporal order. We also confirm the enhancement of coherent chaotic oscillations using snapshots of the phases and values of the associated Kuramoto order parameter. We also explain a possible mechanism for the phenomenon of delay-induced coherent chaotic oscillations despite the presence of large disorders and discuss its applications.

Synchronization in a chaotic neural network with time delay depending on the spatial distance between neurons

The synchronization is investigated in a two-dimensional Hindmarsh-Rose neuronal network by introducing a global coupling scheme with time delay, where the length of time delay is proportional to the spatial distance between neurons. We find that the time delay always disturbs synchronization of the neuronal network. When both the coupling strength and length of time delay per unit distance (i.e., enlargement factor) are large enough, the time delay induces the abnormal membrane potential oscillations in neurons. Specifically, the abnormal membrane potential oscillations for the symmetrically placed neurons form an antiphase, so that the large coupling strength and enlargement factor lead to the desynchronization of the neuronal network. The complete and intermittently complete synchronization of the neuronal network are observed for the right choice of parameters. The physical mechanism underlying these phenomena is analyzed.

Delay-enhanced spatiotemporal order in coupled neuronal systems

In a network of noisy neuron oscillators with time-delayed coupling, we uncover a phenomenon of delay-enhanced spatiotemporal order. We find that time delay in the coupling can dramatically enhance the temporal coherence and spatial synchrony of the noise-induced spike trains. In addition, if the delay time is tuned to nearly match the intrinsic spiking period of the neuronal network, both the coherence and the synchrony reach maximum levels, demonstrating an interesting type of resonance phenomenon with delay. Such findings are shown to be robust to the change of the noise intensity and the rewiring probability of small-world network.

Targeted control of amplitude dynamics in coupled nonlinear oscillators

We propose a general strategy for designing coupling functions in order to achieve a desired amplitude dynamics in coupled nonlinear oscillators. The target dynamics achieved by the proposed control schemes is a fixed-point motion at a desired amplitude level or a periodic motion at a desired frequency. The control schemes are illustrated with Rössler and Hindmarsh-Rose oscillators.

Amplitude death in nonlinear oscillators with nonlinear coupling

Amplitude death is the cessation of oscillations that occurs in coupled nonlinear systems when fixed points are stabilized as a consequence of the interaction. We show here that this phenomenon is very general: it occurs in nonlinearly coupled systems in the absence of parameter mismatch or time delay although time-delayed interactions can enhance the effect. Application is made to synaptically coupled model neurons, nonlinearly coupled Rössler oscillators, as well as to networks of nonlinear oscillators with nonlinear coupling. By suitably designing the nonlinear coupling, arbitrary steady states can be stabilized.
