Pattern formation of coupled spiral waves in bilayer systems: rich dynamics and high-frequency dominance

Stabilization of a spatially uniform steady state in two systems exhibiting Turing patterns

This paper deals with the stabilization of a spatially uniform steady state in two coupled one-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems with Turing instability. This stabilization corresponds to amplitude death that occurs in a coupled system with Turing instability. Stability analysis of the steady state shows that stabilization does not occur if the two reaction-diffusion systems are identical. We derive a sufficient condition for the steady state to be stable for any length of system and any boundary conditions. Our analytical results are supported with numerical examples.

Amplitude death in a pair of one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau systems coupled by diffusive connections

This paper shows that, in a pair of one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) systems, diffusive connections can induce amplitude death. Stability analysis of a spatially uniform steady state in coupled CGL systems reveals that amplitude death never occurs in a pair of identical CGL systems coupled by no-delay connection, but can occur in the case of delay connection. Moreover, amplitude death never occurs in coupled identical CGL systems with zero nominal frequency. Based on these analytical results, we propose a procedure for designing the connection delay time and the coupling strength to induce spatial-robust stabilization, that is, a stabilization of the steady state for any system size and any boundary condition. Numerical simulations are performed to confirm the analytical results.

Experimental, numerical, and mechanistic analysis of the nonmonotonic relationship between oscillatory frequency and photointensity for the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillator

The oscillation frequency of a nonlinear reaction system acts as a key factor for interaction and superposition of spatiotemporal patterns. To control and design spatiotemporal patterns in oscillatory media, it is important to establish the dominant frequency-related mechanism and the effects of external forces and species concentrations on oscillatory frequency. In the Ru(bipy)3(2+)-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillator, a nonmonotonic relationship exists between light intensity and oscillatory frequency (I-F relationship), which is composed of fast photopromotion and slow photoinhibition regions in the oscillation frequency curve. In this work, we identify the essential mechanistic step of the I-F relationship: the previously proposed photoreaction Ru(II)* + Ru(II) + BrO3(-) + 3H(+) → HBrO2 + 2Ru(III) + H2O, which has both effects of frequency-shortening and frequency-lengthening. The concentrations of species can shift the light intensity that produces the maximum frequency, which we simulate and explain with a mechanistic model. This result will benefit studies of pattern formation and biomimetic movement of oscillating polymer gels.

The formation mechanism of defects, spiral wave in the network of neurons

A regular network of neurons is constructed by using the Morris-Lecar (ML) neuron with the ion channels being considered, and the potential mechnism of the formation of a spiral wave is investigated in detail. Several spiral waves are initiated by blocking the target wave with artificial defects and/or partial blocking (poisoning) in ion channels. Furthermore, possible conditions for spiral wave formation and the effect of partial channel blocking are discussed completely. Our results are summarized as follows. 1) The emergence of a target wave depends on the transmembrane currents with diversity, which mapped from the external forcing current and this kind of diversity is associated with spatial heterogeneity in the media. 2) Distinct spiral wave could be induced to occupy the network when the target wave is broken by partially blocking the ion channels of a fraction of neurons (local poisoned area), and these generated spiral waves are similar with the spiral waves induced by artificial defects. It is confirmed that partial channel blocking of some neurons in the network could play a similar role in breaking a target wave as do artificial defects; 3) Channel noise and additive Gaussian white noise are also considered, and it is confirmed that spiral waves are also induced in the network in the presence of noise. According to the results mentioned above, we conclude that appropriate poisoning in ion channels of neurons in the network acts as ‘defects’ on the evolution of the spatiotemporal pattern, and accounts for the emergence of a spiral wave in the network of neurons. These results could be helpful to understand the potential cause of the formation and development of spiral waves in the cortex of a neuronal system.
