Phonons in two-dimensional soft colloidal crystals

Soft and Stiff Normal Modes in Floppy Colloidal Square Lattices

Floppy microscale spring networks are widely studied in theory and simulations, but no well-controlled experimental system currently exists. Here, we show that square lattices consisting of colloid-supported lipid bilayers functionalized with DNA linkers act as microscale floppy spring networks. We extract their normal modes by inverting the particle displacement correlation matrix, showing the emergence of a spectrum of soft modes with low effective stiffness in addition to stiff modes that derive from linker interactions. Evaluation of the softest mode, a uniform shear mode, reveals that shear stiffness decreases with lattice size. Experiments match well with Brownian particle simulations, and we develop a theoretical description based on mapping interactions onto a linear response model to describe the modes. Our results reveal the importance of entropic steric effects and can be used for developing reconfigurable materials at the colloidal length scale.

Field-driven cluster formation in two-dimensional colloidal binary mixtures

We study size- and charge-asymmetric oppositely charged colloids driven by an external electric field. The large particles are connected by harmonic springs, forming a hexagonal-lattice network, while the small particles are free of bonds and exhibit fluidlike motion. We show that this model exhibits a cluster formation pattern when the external driving force exceeds a critical value. The clustering is accompanied with stable wave packets in vibrational motions of the large particles.

The Stability of a Hydrodynamic Bravais Lattice

We present the results of a theoretical investigation of the stability and collective vibrations of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic lattice comprised of millimetric droplets bouncing on the surface of a vibrating liquid bath. We derive the linearized equations of motion describing the dynamics of a generic Bravais lattice, as encompasses all possible tilings of parallelograms in an infinite plane-filling array. Focusing on square and triangular lattice geometries, we demonstrate that for relatively low driving accelerations of the bath, only a subset of inter-drop spacings exist for which stable lattices may be achieved. The range of stable spacings is prescribed by the structure of the underlying wavefield. As the driving acceleration is increased progressively, the initially stationary lattices destabilize into coherent oscillatory motion. Our analysis yields both the instability threshold and the wavevector and polarization of the most unstable vibrational mode. The non-Markovian nature of the droplet dynamics renders the stability analysis of the hydrodynamic lattice more rich and subtle than that of its solid state counterpart.

Manipulating the morphology of colloidal particles via ion beam irradiation: A route to anisotropic shaping

Ion beam irradiation of spherical colloidal particles is a viable route to induce particle deformation, especially to get anisotropic shapes. Even though less common in comparison with dry etching techniques, different types of morphological changes can be attained depending on the process parameters (angle of incidence, energy, fluence of the ion beam, type of ion, temperature) and on particle material and initial particle arrangement (crystalline or disordered, made up of isolated or closely-packed particles). The technique can be harnessed to get anisotropic deformation of spherical colloidal particles into an ellipsoidal shape, but also to tailor the interstices between closely-packed colloidal particles, to get particle necking and coalescence as well as particle rearrangement. As such, particle deformation based on ion irradiation can find diverse applications from synthesis of ellipsoidal particles to modified templates for colloidal lithography. In this review, we examine in detail the principles and models of colloidal particle shaping via ion beam irradiation, the influence of process parameters on particle morphology and the applications of irradiated particles.

Structural and short-time vibrational properties of colloidal glasses and supercooled liquids in the vicinity of the re-entrant glass transition

We investigate the short-time vibrational properties and structure of two-dimensional, bidisperse, colloidal glasses and supercooled liquids in the vicinity of the re-entrant glass transition, as a function of interparticle depletion attraction strength. The long-time spatiotemporal dynamics of the samples are measured to be non-monotonic, confirming that the suspensions evolve from repulsive glass to supercooled liquid to attractive glass with increasing depletion attraction. Here, we search for vibrational signatures of the re-entrant behavior in the short-time spatiotemporal dynamics, i.e., dynamics associated with particle motion inside its nearest-neighbor cage. Interestingly, we observe that the anharmonicity of these in-cage vibrations varies non-monotonically with increasing attraction strength, consistent with the non-monotonic long-time structural relaxation dynamics of the re-entrant glass. We also extract effective spring constants between neighboring particles; we find that spring stiffness involving small particles also varies non-monotonically with increasing attraction strength, while stiffness between large particles increases monotonically. Last, from study of depletion-dependent local structure and vibration participation fractions, we gain microscopic insight into the particle-size-dependent contributions to short-time vibrational modes in the glass and supercooled liquid states.

Crystalline shielding mitigates structural rearrangement and localizes memory in jammed systems under oscillatory shear

The nature of yield in amorphous materials under stress has yet to be fully elucidated. In particular, understanding how microscopic rearrangement gives rise to macroscopic structural and rheological signatures in disordered systems is vital for the prediction and characterization of yield and the study of how memory is stored in disordered materials. Here, we investigate the evolution of local structural homogeneity on an individual particle level in amorphous jammed two-dimensional (athermal) systems under oscillatory shear and relate this evolution to rearrangement, memory, and macroscale rheological measurements. We define the structural metric crystalline shielding, and show that it is predictive of rearrangement propensity and structural volatility of individual particles under shear. We use this metric to identify localized regions of the system in which the material's memory of its preparation is preserved. Our results contribute to a growing understanding of how local structure relates to dynamic response and memory in disordered systems.

A structural approach to vibrational properties ranging from crystals to disordered systems

Many scientists generally attribute the vibrational anomalies of disordered solids to the structural disorder, which, however, is still under intense debate. Here we conduct simulations on two-dimensional packings with a finite temperature, whose structure is tuned from a crystalline configuration to an amorphous one, then the amorphous from very dense state to a relatively loose state. By measuring the vibrational density of states and the reduced density of states, we clearly observe the evolution of the boson peak with the change of the disorder and volume fractions. Meanwhile, to understand the structural origin of this anomaly, we identify the soft regimes of all systems with a novel machine-learning method, where the "softness", a local structural quantity, is defined. Interestingly, we find a strong monotonic relationship between the shape of the boson peak and the softness as well as its spatial heterogeneity, suggesting that the softness of a system may be a new structural approach to the anomalous vibrational properties of amorphous solids.

Pattern detection in colloidal assembly: A mosaic of analysis techniques

Characterization of the morphology, identification of patterns and quantification of order encountered in colloidal assemblies is essential for several reasons. First of all, it is useful to compare different self-assembly methods and assess the influence of different process parameters on the final colloidal pattern. In addition, casting light on the structures formed by colloidal particles can help to get better insight into colloidal interactions and understand phase transitions. Finally, the growing interest in colloidal assemblies in materials science for practical applications going from optoelectronics to biosensing imposes a thorough characterization of the morphology of colloidal assemblies because of the intimate relationship between morphology and physical properties (e.g. optical and mechanical) of a material. Several image analysis techniques developed to investigate images (acquired via scanning electron microscopy, digital video microscopy and other imaging methods) provide variegated and complementary information on the colloidal structures under scrutiny. However, understanding how to use such image analysis tools to get information on the characteristics of the colloidal assemblies may represent a non-trivial task, because it requires the combination of approaches drawn from diverse disciplines such as image processing, computational geometry and computational topology and their application to a primarily physico-chemical process. Moreover, the lack of a systematic description of such analysis tools makes it difficult to select the ones more suitable for the features of the colloidal assembly under examination. In this review we provide a methodical and extensive description of real-space image analysis tools by explaining their principles and their application to the investigation of two-dimensional colloidal assemblies with different morphological characteristics.

Shear-assisted grain coarsening in colloidal polycrystals

Grain growth under shear annealing is crucial for controlling the properties of polycrystalline materials. However, their microscopic kinetics are not well understood because individual atomic trajectories are difficult to track. Here, we study grain growth with single-particle kinetics in colloidal polycrystals using video microscopy. Rich grain-growth phenomena are revealed in three shear regimes, including the normal grain growth (NGG) in weak shear melting-recrystallization process in strong shear. For intermediate shear, early stage NGG is arrested by built-up stress and eventually gives way to dynamic abnormal grain growth (DAGG). We find that DAGG occurs via a melting-recrystallization process, which naturally explains the puzzling stress drop at the onset of DAGG in metals. Moreover, we visualize that grain boundary (GB) migration is coupled with shear via disconnection gliding. The disconnection-gliding dynamics and the collective motions of ambient particles are resolved. We also observed that grain rotation can violate the conventional relation [Formula: see text] (R is the grain radius, and θ is the misorientation angle between two grains) by emission and annihilation of dislocations across the grain, resulting in a step-by-step rotation. Besides grain growth, we discover a result in shear-induced melting: The melting volume fraction varies sinusoidally on the angle mismatch between the triangular lattice orientation of the grain and the shear direction. These discoveries hold potential to inform microstructure engineering of polycrystalline materials.

A Journey Through the Landscapes of Small Particles in Binary Colloidal Assemblies: Unveiling Structural Transitions from Isolated Particles to Clusters upon Variation in Composition

Two-dimensional (2D) amorphous binary colloidal assemblies composed of particles of two different sizes are characterized by the loss of hexagonal close-packing for larger particles, occurring when the size ratio between small (S) and large (L) particles dSdL exceeds a certain threshold value. For moderately low particle number ratios NSNL large particles still retain a denser arrangement with transitions from hexagonal symmetry to the coexistence of different types of symmetries as NSNL progressively departs from 0 to higher values. On the other hand, small particles reveal sparser arrangements: shape identification and quantification of structural transitions in small particle arrangements appear particularly challenging. In this article, we investigate their shapes and transitions for amorphous binary colloidal particles assembled at the air/water interface. For the quantitative characterization of the evolution in particle arrangements for NSNL variable between 0.5 and 2, we develop an innovative procedure for morphological analysis, combining Minkowski functionals, Voronoi diagrams and ad hoc techniques to recognize and classify specific features. Such a powerful approach has revealed a wide variety of landscapes featuring isolated particles, dimers, chains, small clusters evolving with the colloidal suspension composition. Our method can be applied to the analysis of spatial configurations of sparse colloidal patterns obtained in different conditions.

Emergence and percolation of rigid domains during the colloidal glass transition

Using video microscopy, we measure local spatial constraints in disordered binary colloidal samples, ranging from dilute fluids to jammed glasses, and probe their spatial and temporal correlations to local dynamics during the glass transition. We observe the emergence of significant correlations between constraints and local dynamics within the Lindemann criterion, which coincides with the onset of glassy dynamics in supercooled liquids. Rigid domains in fluids are identified based on local constraints and demonstrate a percolation transition near the glass transition, accompanied by the emergence of dynamical heterogeneities. Our results show that spatial constraint instead of the geometry of amorphous structures is the key that connects the complex spatial-temporal correlations in disordered materials.

Vibrational Modes and Dynamic Heterogeneity in a Near-Equilibrium 2D Glass of Colloidal Kites

Using video microscopy and particle-tracking techniques developed for dense Brownian systems of polygons, we study the structure-dynamics relationship in a near-equilibrium 2D glass consisting of anisotropic Penrose kite-shaped colloids. Detailed vibrational properties of kite glasses, both translational and rotational, are obtained using covariance matrix techniques. Different from other colloidal glasses of spheres and ellipsoids, the vibrational modes of kite glasses at low frequencies show a strong translational character with spatially localized rotational modes and extended translational modes. Low-frequency quasilocalized soft modes commonly found in sphere glasses are absent in the translational phonon modes of kite glasses. Soft modes are observed predominantly in the rotational vibrations and correlate well with the spatial distribution of Debye-Waller factors. The local structural entropy field shows a strong correlation with the observed dynamic heterogeneity.

Machine learning determination of atomic dynamics at grain boundaries

In polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries are sites of enhanced atomic motion, but the complexity of the atomic structures within a grain boundary network makes it difficult to link the structure and atomic dynamics. Here, we use a machine learning technique to establish a connection between local structure and dynamics of these materials. Following previous work on bulk glassy materials, we define a purely structural quantity (softness) that captures the propensity of an atom to rearrange. This approach correctly identifies crystalline regions, stacking faults, and twin boundaries as having low likelihood of atomic rearrangements while finding a large variability within high-energy grain boundaries. As has been found in glasses, the probability that atoms of a given softness will rearrange is nearly Arrhenius. This indicates a well-defined energy barrier as well as a well-defined prefactor for the Arrhenius form for atoms of a given softness. The decrease in the prefactor for low-softness atoms indicates that variations in entropy exhibit a dominant influence on the atomic dynamics in grain boundaries.

Pattern Formation in Binary Colloidal Assemblies: Hidden Symmetries in a Kaleidoscope of Structures

In this study, we present a detailed investigation of the morphology of binary colloidal structures formed by self-assembly at air/water interface of particles of two different sizes, with a size ratio such that the larger particles do not retain a hexagonal arrangement in the binary assembly. While the structure and symmetry of binary mixtures in which such hexagonal order is preserved has been thoroughly scrutinized, binary colloids in the regime of nonpreservation of the hexagonal order have not been examined with the same level of detail due also to the difficulty in finding analysis tools suitable to recognize hidden symmetries in seemingly amorphous and disordered arrangements. For this purpose, we resorted to a combination of different analysis tools based on computational geometry and computational topology to get a comprehensive picture of the morphology of the assemblies. By carrying out an extensive investigation of binary assemblies in this regime with variable concentration of smaller particles with respect to larger particles, we identify the main patterns that coexist in the apparently disordered assemblies and detect transitions in the symmetries upon increase in the number of small particles. As the concentration of small particles increases, large particle arrangements become more dilute and a transition from hexagonal to rhombic and square symmetries occurs, accompanied also by an increase in clusters of small particles; the relative weight of each specific symmetry can be controlled by varying the composition of the assemblies. The demonstration of the possibility to control the morphology of apparently disordered binary colloidal assemblies by varying experimental conditions and the definition of a route for the investigation of disordered assemblies are important for future studies of complex colloidal patterns to understand self-assembly mechanisms and to tailor the physical properties of colloidal assemblies.

Chaos and Anderson-like localization in polydisperse granular chains

We investigate the dynamics of highly polydisperse finite granular chains. From the spatiospectral properties of small vibrations, we identify which particular single-particle displacements lead to energy localization. Then, we address a fundamental question: Do granular nonlinearities and the resulting chaotic dynamics destroy this energy localization? Our numerical simulations show that for moderate nonlinearities, the overall system behaves chaotically, and spreading of energy occurs. However, long-lasting chaotic energy localization is observed for particular single-particle excitations in the presence of the nonsmooth nonlinearities. On the other hand, for sufficiently strong nonlinearities, the granular chain reaches energy equipartition. In this case, an equilibrium chaotic state is reached independent of the initial position excitation.

Normal modes of weak colloidal gels

The normal modes and relaxation rates of weak colloidal gels are investigated in calculations using different models of the hydrodynamic interactions between suspended particles. The relaxation spectrum is computed for freely draining, Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa, and accelerated Stokesian dynamics approximations of the hydrodynamic mobility in a normal mode analysis of a harmonic network representing several colloidal gels. We find that the density of states and spatial structure of the normal modes are fundamentally altered by long-ranged hydrodynamic coupling among the particles. Short-ranged coupling due to hydrodynamic lubrication affects only the relaxation rates of short-wavelength modes. Hydrodynamic models accounting for long-ranged coupling exhibit a microscopic relaxation rate for each normal mode, λ that scales as l^{-2}, where l is the spatial correlation length of the normal mode. For the freely draining approximation, which neglects long-ranged coupling, the microscopic relaxation rate scales as l^{-γ}, where γ varies between three and two with increasing particle volume fraction. A simple phenomenological model of the internal elastic response to normal mode fluctuations is developed, which shows that long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions play a central role in the viscoelasticity of the gel network. Dynamic simulations of hard spheres that gel in response to short-ranged depletion attractions are used to test the applicability of the density of states predictions. For particle concentrations up to 30% by volume, the power law decay of the relaxation modulus in simulations accounting for long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions agrees with predictions generated by the density of states of the corresponding harmonic networks as well as experimental measurements. For higher volume fractions, excluded volume interactions dominate the stress response, and the prediction from the harmonic network density of states fails. Analogous to the Zimm model in polymer physics, our results indicate that long-ranged hydrodynamic interactions play a crucial role in determining the microscopic dynamics and macroscopic properties of weak colloidal gels.

Interfacial and volumetric sensitivity of the dry sintering process of polymer colloidal crystals: a thermal transport and photonic bandgap study

We introduce the in situ characterization of the dry sintering process of face-centred cubic colloidal crystals by two complementary techniques: thermal transport and photonic stopband characterization. Therefore, we employed time-dependent, isothermal laser flash analysis and specular reflectivity experiments close to the glass transition temperature of the colloidal crystal. Both methods yield distinctly different time constants of the film formation process. This discrepancy can be attributed to a volume- (photonic stopband) and interface-driven (thermal transport) sensitivity of the respective characterization method. Nevertheless, both methods yield comparable apparent activation energies. Finally, we extended the sintering process characterization to further polymer compositions, with vastly different glass transition temperatures. We could show that the film formation rate is governed by the viscoelastic properties of the polymers at the respective annealing temperature.

Colloidal polycrystalline monolayers under oscillatory shear

In this paper we probe the structural response to oscillatory shear deformations of polycrystalline monolayers of soft repulsive colloids with varying area fraction over a broad range of frequencies and amplitudes. The particles are confined at a fluid interface, sheared using a magnetic microdisk, and imaged through optical microscopy. The structural and mechanical response of soft materials is highly dependent on their microstructure. If crystals are well understood and deform through the creation and mobilization of specific defects, the situation is much more complex for disordered jammed materials, where identifying structural motifs defining plastically rearranging regions remains an elusive task. Our materials fall between these two classes and allow the identification of clear pathways for structural evolution. In particular, we demonstrate that large enough strains are able to fluidize the system, identifying critical strains that fulfill a local Lindemann criterion. Conversely, smaller strains lead to localized and erratic irreversible particle rearrangements due to the motion of structural defects. In this regime, oscillatory shear promotes defect annealing and leads to the growth of large crystalline domains. Numerical simulations help identify the population of rearranging particles with those exhibiting the largest deviatoric stresses and indicate that structural evolution proceeds towards the minimization of the stress stored in the system. The particles showing high deviatoric stresses are localized around grain boundaries and defects, providing a simple criterion to spot regions likely to rearrange plastically under oscillatory shear.

Vibrational properties of quasi-two-dimensional colloidal glasses with varying interparticle attraction

We measure the vibrational modes and particle dynamics of quasi-two-dimensional colloidal glasses as a function of interparticle interaction strength. The interparticle attractions are controlled via a temperature-tunable depletion interaction. Specifically, the interparticle attraction energy is increased gradually from a very small value (nearly hard-sphere) to moderate strength (∼4k_{B}T), and the variation of colloidal particle dynamics and vibrations are concurrently probed. The particle dynamics slow monotonically with increasing attraction strength, and the particle motions saturate for strengths greater than ∼2k_{B}T, i.e., as the system evolves from a nearly repulsive glass to an attractive glass. The shape of the phonon density of states is revealed to change with increasing attraction strength, and the number of low-frequency modes exhibits a crossover for glasses with weak compared to strong interparticle attraction at a threshold of ∼2k_{B}T. This variation in the properties of the low-frequency vibrational modes suggests a new means for distinguishing between repulsive and attractive glass states.

Structures of Local Rearrangements in Soft Colloidal Glasses

We image local structural rearrangements in soft colloidal glasses under small periodic perturbations induced by thermal cycling. Local structural entropy S_{2} positively correlates with observed rearrangements in colloidal glasses. The high S_{2} values of the rearranging clusters in glasses indicate that fragile regions in glasses are structurally less correlated, similar to structural defects in crystalline solids. Slow-evolving high S_{2} spots are capable of predicting local rearrangements long before the relaxations occur, while fluctuation-created high S_{2} spots best correlate with local deformations right before the rearrangement events. Local free volumes are also found to correlate with particle rearrangements at extreme values, although the ability to identify relaxation sites is substantially lower than S_{2}. Our experiments provide an efficient structural identifier for the fragile regions in glasses and highlight the important role of structural correlations in the physics of glasses.

Dynamics of ordered colloidal particle monolayers at nematic liquid crystal interfaces

We prepare two-dimensional crystalline packings of colloidal particles on surfaces of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) 5CB, and we investigate the diffusion and vibrational phonon modes of these particles using video microscopy. Short-time particle diffusion at the air-NLC interface is well described by a Stokes-Einstein model with viscosity similar to that of 5CB. Crystal phonon modes, measured by particle displacement covariance techniques, are demonstrated to depend on the elastic constants of 5CB through interparticle forces produced by LC defects that extend from the interface into the underlying bulk material. The displacement correlations permit characterization of transverse and longitudinal sound velocities of the crystal packings, as well as the particle interactions produced by the LC defects. All behaviors are studied in the nematic phase as a function of increasing temperature up to the nematic-isotropic transition.

The range and nature of effective interactions in hard-sphere solids

Colloidal systems observed in video microscopy are often analysed using the displacements correlation matrix of particle positions. In non-thermal systems, the inverse of this matrix can be interpreted as a pair-interaction potential between particles. If the system is thermally agitated, however, only an effective interaction is accessible from the correlation matrix. We show how this effective interaction differs from the non-thermal case by comparing with high-statistics numerical data from hard-sphere crystals.

Probing the Role of Mobility in the Collective Motion of Nonequilibrium Systems

By systematically varying the mobility of self-propelled particles in a 2D lattice, we experimentally study the influence of particle mobility on system's collective motion. Our system is intrinsically nonequilibrium due to the lack of energy equipartition. By constructing the covariance matrix of spatial fluctuations and solving for its eigenmodes, we obtain the collective motions of the system with various magnitudes. Interestingly, our structurally ordered nonequilibrium system exhibits properties almost identical to disordered glassy systems under thermal equilibrium: the modes with large overall motions are spatially correlated and quasilocalized while the modes with small collective motions are highly localized, resembling the low- and high-frequency modes in glass. More surprisingly, a peak similar to the boson peak forms in our nonequilibrium system as the number of mobile particles increases, revealing the possible origin of the boson peak from a dynamic aspect. We further illustrate that the spatially correlated large-movement modes can be produced by the cooperation of highly active particles above a threshold fraction, while the localized small-movement modes can be created by adding individual inactive particles. Our study clarifies the role of mobility in collective motions, and further suggests a promising possibility of extending the powerful mode analysis approach to nonequilibrium systems.

Cavity averages for hard spheres in the presence of polydispersity and incomplete data

We develop a cavity-based method which allows to extract thermodynamic properties from position information in hard-sphere/disk systems. So far, there are available-volume and free-volume methods. We add a third one, which we call available volume after take-out, and which is shown to be mathematically equivalent to the others. In applications, where data sets are finite, all three methods show limitations, and they do this in different parameter ranges. We illustrate the principal equivalence and the limitations on data from molecular dynamics: In particular, we test robustness against missing data. We have in mind experimental limitations where there is a small polydispersity, say 4% in the particle radii, but individual radii cannot be determined. We observe that, depending on the used method, the errors in such a situation are easily 100% for the pressure and 10kT for the chemical potentials. Our work is meant as guideline to the experimentalists for choosing the right one of the three methods, in order to keep the outcome of experimental data analysis meaningful.

Strain fluctuations and elastic moduli in disordered solids

Recently there has been a surge in interest in using video-microscopy techniques to infer the local mechanical properties of disordered solids. One common approach is to minimize the difference between particle vibrational displacements in a local coarse-graining volume and the displacements that would result from a best-fit affine deformation. Effective moduli are then inferred under the assumption that the components of this best-fit affine deformation tensor have a Boltzmann distribution. In this paper, we combine theoretical arguments with experimental and simulation data to demonstrate that the above does not reveal information about the true elastic moduli of jammed packings and colloidal glasses.

Interaction between colloidal particles on an oil-water interface in dilute and dense phases

The interaction between micron-sized charged colloidal particles at polar/non-polar liquid interfaces remains surprisingly poorly understood for a relatively simple physical chemistry system. By measuring the pair correlation function g(r) for different densities of polystyrene particles at the decane-water interface, and using a powerful predictor-corrector inversion scheme, effective pair-interaction potentials can be obtained up to fairly high densities, and these reproduce the experimental g(r) in forward simulations, so are self consistent. While at low densities these potentials agree with published dipole-dipole repulsion, measured by various methods, an apparent density dependence and long range attraction are obtained when the density is higher. This condition is thus explored in an alternative fashion, measuring the local mobility of colloids when confined by their neighbors. This method of extracting interaction potentials gives results that are consistent with dipolar repulsion throughout the concentration range, with the same magnitude as in the dilute limit. We are unable to rule out the density dependence based on the experimental accuracy of our data, but we show that incomplete equilibration of the experimental system, which would be possible despite long waiting times due to the very strong repulsions, is a possible cause of artefacts in the inverted potentials. We conclude that to within the precision of these measurements, the dilute pair potential remains valid at high density in this system.

Identifying structural flow defects in disordered solids using machine-learning methods

We use machine-learning methods on local structure to identify flow defects-or particles susceptible to rearrangement-in jammed and glassy systems. We apply this method successfully to two very different systems: a two-dimensional experimental realization of a granular pillar under compression and a Lennard-Jones glass in both two and three dimensions above and below its glass transition temperature. We also identify characteristics of flow defects that differentiate them from the rest of the sample. Our results show it is possible to discern subtle structural features responsible for heterogeneous dynamics observed across a broad range of disordered materials.

Vibrational and structural signatures of the crossover between dense glassy and sparse gel-like attractive colloidal packings

We investigate the vibrational modes of quasi-two-dimensional disordered colloidal packings of hard colloidal spheres with short-range attractions as a function of packing fraction. Certain properties of the vibrational density of states (vDOS) are shown to correlate with the density and structure of the samples (i.e., in sparsely versus densely packed samples). Specifically, a crossover from dense glassy to sparse gel-like states is suggested by an excess of phonon modes at low frequency and by a variation in the slope of the vDOS with frequency at low frequency. This change in phonon mode distribution is demonstrated to arise largely from localized vibrations that involve individual and/or small clusters of particles with few local bonds. Conventional order parameters and void statistics did not exhibit obvious gel-glass signatures as a function of volume fraction. These mode behaviors and accompanying structural insights offer a potentially new set of indicators for identification of glass-gel transitions and for assignment of gel-like versus glass-like character to a disordered solid material.

Physics in ordered and disordered colloidal matter composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgel particles

This review collects and describes experiments that employ colloidal suspensions to probe physics in ordered and disordered solids and related complex fluids. The unifying feature of this body of work is its clever usage of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel particles. These temperature-sensitive colloidal particles provide experimenters with a 'knob' for in situ control of particle size, particle interaction and particle packing fraction that, in turn, influence the structural and dynamical behavior of the complex fluids and solids. A brief summary of PNIPAM particle synthesis and properties is given, followed by a synopsis of current activity in the field. The latter discussion describes a variety of soft matter investigations including those that explore formation and melting of crystals and clusters, and those that probe structure, rearrangement and rheology of disordered (jammed/glassy) and partially ordered matter. The review, therefore, provides a snapshot of a broad range of physics phenomenology which benefits from the unique properties of responsive microgel particles.

Predicting plasticity with soft vibrational modes: from dislocations to glasses

We show that quasilocalized low-frequency modes in the vibrational spectrum can be used to construct soft spots, or regions vulnerable to rearrangement, which serve as a universal tool for the identification of flow defects in solids. We show that soft spots not only encode spatial information, via their location, but also directional information, via directors for particles within each soft spot. Single crystals with isolated dislocations exhibit low-frequency phonon modes that localize at the core, and their polarization pattern predicts the motion of atoms during elementary dislocation glide in two and three dimensions in exquisite detail. Even in polycrystals and disordered solids, we find that the directors associated with particles in soft spots are highly correlated with the direction of particle displacements in rearrangements.

Phonon dispersion and elastic moduli of two-dimensional disordered colloidal packings of soft particles with frictional interactions

Particle tracking and displacement covariance matrix techniques are employed to investigate the phonon dispersion relations of two-dimensional colloidal glasses composed of soft, thermoresponsive microgel particles whose temperature-sensitive size permits in situ variation of particle packing fraction. Bulk, B, and shear, G, moduli of the colloidal glasses are extracted from the dispersion relations as a function of packing fraction, and variation of the ratio G/B with packing fraction is found to agree quantitatively with predictions for jammed packings of frictional soft particles. In addition, G and B individually agree with numerical predictions for frictional particles. This remarkable level of agreement enabled us to extract an energy scale for the interparticle interaction from the individual elastic constants and to derive an approximate estimate for the interparticle friction coefficient.
