Numerical Study on an RBF-FD Tangent Plane Based Method for Convection–Diffusion Equations on Anisotropic Evolving Surfaces

In this paper, we present a fully Lagrangian method based on the radial basis function (RBF) finite difference (FD) method for solving convection–diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) on evolving surfaces. Surface differential operators are discretized by the tangent plane approach using Gaussian RBFs augmented with two-dimensional (2D) polynomials. The main advantage of our method is the simplicity of calculating differentiation weights. Additionally, we couple the method with anisotropic RBFs (ARBFs) to obtain more accurate numerical solutions for the anisotropic growth of surfaces. In the ARBF interpolation, the Euclidean distance is replaced with a suitable metric that matches the anisotropic surface geometry. Therefore, it will lead to a good result on the aspects of stability and accuracy of the RBF-FD method for this type of problem. The performance of this method is shown for various convection–diffusion equations on evolving surfaces, which include the anisotropic growth of surfaces and growth coupled with the solutions of PDEs.

Multifront regime of a piecewise-linear FitzHugh-Nagumo model with cross diffusion

Oscillatory reaction-diffusion fronts are described analytically in a piecewise-linear approximation of the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations with linear cross-diffusion terms, which correspond to a pursuit-evasion situation. Fundamental dynamical regimes of front propagation into a stable and into an unstable state are studied, and the shape of the waves for both regimes is explored in detail. We find that oscillations in the wave profile may either be negligible due to rapid attenuation or noticeable if the damping is slow or vanishes. In the first case, we find fronts that display a monotonic profile of the kink type, whereas in the second case the oscillations give rise to fronts with wavy tails. Further, the oscillations may be damped with exponential decay or undamped so that a saw-shaped pattern forms. Finally, we observe an unexpected feature in the behavior of both types of the oscillatory waves: the coexistence of several fronts with different profile shapes and propagation speeds for the same parameter values of the model, i.e., a multifront regime of wave propagation.

Influence of Curvature, Growth, and Anisotropy on the Evolution of Turing Patterns on Growing Manifolds

We study two-species reaction–diffusion systems on growing manifolds, including situations where the growth is anisotropic yet dilational in nature. In contrast to the literature on linear instabilities in such systems, we study how growth and anisotropy impact the qualitative properties of nonlinear patterned states which have formed before growth is initiated. We produce numerical solutions to numerous reaction–diffusion systems with varying reaction kinetics, manner of growth (both isotropic and anisotropic), and timescales of growth on both planar elliptical and curved ellipsoidal domains. We find that in some parameter regimes, some of these factors have a negligible effect on the long-time patterned state. On the other hand, we find that some of these factors play a role in determining the patterns formed on surfaces and that anisotropic growth can produce qualitatively different patterns to those formed under isotropic growth.

Curvature-driven spatial patterns in growing 3D domains: A mechanochemical model for phyllotaxis

Here we discuss the formation of phyllotactic patterns in the shoot apical meristem (SAM) of plants, where the spatial distribution of the phytohormone auxin determines phyllotaxis in a domain that is growing and changing in time. We assume that the concentration of auxin modifies the mechanical properties of the domain and that the mechanical stress field in the SAM orients the flux of auxin. To study this problem we propose a mechanism for pattern formation in growing domains with variable curvature. The dynamics of chemicals is modeled by a reaction-diffusion system that produces a three dimensional pattern of chemical concentrations that changes the stress field in the domain while growing. The growth process is modeled by a phase-field order parameter which determines the location of the boundaries of the domain. This field is coupled to the chemical concentration through a curvature term that affects the local mechanical stress in the domain. The local stress changes in turn modify the chemical patterns. Our model constitutes a useful and novel approach in theoretical biology, as many developmental processes in organisms seem to be affected by the changes of curvature, size, mechanical stress and other physical aspects. Several patterns seen in many plants are reproduced under certain conditions by our model.

Oscillatory pulse-front waves in a reaction-diffusion system with cross diffusion

We explore traveling waves with oscillatory tails in a bistable piecewise linear reaction-diffusion system of the FitzHugh-Nagumo type with linear cross diffusion. These waves differ fundamentally from the standard simple fronts of the kink type. In contrast to kinks, the waves studied here have a complex shape profile with a front-back-front (a pulse-front) pattern. The characteristic feature of such pulse-front waves is a hybrid type of the speed diagram, which on the one hand reflects the typical dynamical behavior of the fronts in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, related to the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch bifurcation, and on the other hand exhibits also the solitary pulse scenario where several waves appear simultaneously with different speeds of propagation. We describe analytically the wave profiles and heteroclinic trajectories in the phase plane and discuss their morphology and transformation. The phenomena of wave formation and propagation are also studied by numerical simulations of the model partial differential equations. These simulations support the view that the pulse-front waves are constructed of fronts and pulses.

Oscillatory pulses and wave trains in a bistable reaction-diffusion system with cross diffusion

We study waves with exponentially decaying oscillatory tails in a reaction-diffusion system with linear cross diffusion. To be specific, we consider a piecewise linear approximation of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, also known as the Bonhoeffer-van der Pol model. We focus on two types of traveling waves, namely solitary pulses that correspond to a homoclinic solution, and sequences of pulses or wave trains, i.e., a periodic solution. The effect of cross diffusion on wave profiles and speed of propagation is analyzed. We find the intriguing result that both pulses and wave trains occur in the bistable cross-diffusive FitzHugh-Nagumo system, whereas only fronts exist in the standard bistable system without cross diffusion.
