Abstract
The Koopman operator framework holds promise for spectral analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems based on linear operators. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Koopman operator, the so-called Koopman eigenvalues and Koopman eigenfunctions, respectively, mirror global properties of the system's flow. In this paper, we perform the Koopman analysis of the singularly perturbed van der Pol system. First, we show the spectral signature depending on singular perturbation: how two Koopman principal eigenvalues are ordered and what distinct shapes emerge in their associated Koopman eigenfunctions. Second, we discuss the singular limit of the Koopman operator, which is derived through the concatenation of Koopman operators for the fast and slow subsystems. From the spectral properties of the Koopman operator for the singularly perturbed system and the singular limit, we suggest that the Koopman eigenfunctions inherit geometric properties of the singularly perturbed system. These results are applicable to general planar singularly perturbed systems with stable limit cycles.

Abstract
Motor systems show an overall robustness, but because they are highly nonlinear, understanding how they achieve robustness is difficult. In many rhythmic systems, robustness against perturbations involves response of both the shape and the timing of the trajectory. This makes the study of robustness even more challenging. To understand how a motor system produces robust behaviors in a variable environment, we consider a neuromechanical model of motor patterns in the feeding apparatus of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica (Shaw et al. in J Comput Neurosci 38(1):25-51, 2015; Lyttle et al. in Biol Cybern 111(1):25-47, 2017). We established in (Wang et al. in SIAM J Appl Dyn Syst 20(2):701-744, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1137/20M1344974 ) the tools for studying combined shape and timing responses of limit cycle systems under sustained perturbations and here apply them to study robustness of the neuromechanical model against increased mechanical load during swallowing. Interestingly, we discover that nonlinear biomechanical properties confer resilience by immediately increasing resistance to applied loads. In contrast, the effect of changed sensory feedback signal is significantly delayed by the firing rates' hard boundary properties. Our analysis suggests that sensory feedback contributes to robustness in swallowing primarily by shifting the timing of neural activation involved in the power stroke of the motor cycle (retraction). This effect enables the system to generate stronger retractor muscle forces to compensate for the increased load, and hence achieve strong robustness. The approaches that we are applying to understanding a neuromechanical model in Aplysia, and the results that we have obtained, are likely to provide insights into the function of other motor systems that encounter changing mechanical loads and hard boundaries, both due to mechanical and neuronal firing properties.

Abstract
Homeostasis occurs in a control system when a quantity remains approximately constant as a parameter, representing an external perturbation, varies over some range. Golubitsky and Stewart (J Math Biol 74(1-2):387-407, 2017) developed a notion of infinitesimal homeostasis for equilibrium systems using singularity theory. Rhythmic physiological systems (breathing, locomotion, feeding) maintain homeostasis through control of large-amplitude limit cycles rather than equilibrium points. Here we take an initial step to study (infinitesimal) homeostasis for limit-cycle systems in terms of the average of a quantity taken around the limit cycle. We apply the "infinitesimal shape response curve" (iSRC) introduced by Wang et al. (SIAM J Appl Dyn Syst 82(7):1-43, 2021) to study infinitesimal homeostasis for limit-cycle systems in terms of the mean value of a quantity of interest, averaged around the limit cycle. Using the iSRC, which captures the linearized shape displacement of an oscillator upon a static perturbation, we provide a formula for the derivative of the averaged quantity with respect to the control parameter. Our expression allows one to identify homeostasis points for limit cycle systems in the averaging sense. We demonstrate in the Hodgkin-Huxley model and in a metabolic regulatory network model that the iSRC-based method provides an accurate representation of the sensitivity of averaged quantities.

Abstract
Optimal entrainment of limit-cycle oscillators by strong periodic inputs is studied on the basis of the phase-amplitude reduction and Floquet theory. Two methods for deriving the input waveforms that keep the system state close to the original limit cycle are proposed, which enable the use of strong inputs for entrainment. The first amplitude-feedback method uses feedback control to suppress deviations of the system state from the limit cycle, while the second amplitude-penalty method seeks an input waveform that does not excite large deviations from the limit cycle in the feedforward framework. Optimal entrainment of the van der Pol and Willamowski-Rössler oscillators with real or complex Floquet exponents is analyzed as examples. It is demonstrated that the proposed methods can achieve considerably faster entrainment and provide wider entrainment ranges than the conventional method that relies only on phase reduction.

Abstract
When dynamical systems that produce rhythmic behaviors operate within hard limits, they may exhibit limit cycles with sliding components, that is, closed isolated periodic orbits that make and break contact with a constraint surface. Examples include heel-ground interaction in locomotion, firing rate rectification in neural networks, and stick-slip oscillators. In many rhythmic systems, robustness against external perturbations involves response of both the shape and the timing of the limit cycle trajectory. The existing methods of infinitesimal phase response curve (iPRC) and variational analysis are well established for quantifying changes in timing and shape, respectively, for smooth systems. These tools have recently been extended to nonsmooth dynamics with transversal crossing boundaries. In this work, we further extend the iPRC method to nonsmooth systems with sliding components, which enables us to make predictions about the synchronization properties of weakly coupled stick-slip oscillators. We observe a new feature of the isochrons in a planar limit cycle with hard sliding boundaries: a nonsmooth kink in the asymptotic phase function, originating from the point at which the limit cycle smoothly departs the constraint surface, and propagating away from the hard boundary into the interior of the domain. Moreover, the classical variational analysis neglects timing information and is restricted to instantaneous perturbations. By defining the "infinitesimal shape response curve" (iSRC), we incorporate timing sensitivity of an oscillator to describe the shape response of this oscillator to parametric perturbations. In order to extract timing information, we also develop a "local timing response curve" (lTRC) that measures the timing sensitivity of a limit cycle within any given region. We demonstrate in a specific example that taking into account local timing sensitivity in a nonsmooth system greatly improves the accuracy of the iSRC over global timing analysis given by the iPRC.

Abstract
We review the theory of weakly coupled oscillators for smooth systems. We then examine situations where application of the standard theory falls short and illustrate how it can be extended. Specific examples are given to non-smooth systems with applications to the Izhikevich neuron. We then introduce the idea of isostable reduction to explore behaviours that the weak coupling paradigm cannot explain. In an additional example, we show how bifurcations that change the stability of phase-locked solutions in a pair of identical coupled neurons can be understood using the notion of isostable reduction. Abstract
An overview is given on two representative methods of dynamical reduction known as centre-manifold reduction and phase reduction. These theories are presented in a somewhat more unified fashion than the theories in the past. The target systems of reduction are coupled limit-cycle oscillators. Particular emphasis is placed on the remarkable structural similarity existing between these theories. While the two basic principles, i.e. (i) reduction of dynamical degrees of freedom and (ii) transformation of reduced evolution equation to a canonical form, are shared commonly by reduction methods in general, it is shown how these principles are incorporated into the above two reduction theories in a coherent manner. Regarding the phase reduction, a new formulation of perturbative expansion is presented for discrete populations of oscillators. The style of description is intended to be so informal that one may digest, without being bothered with technicalities, what has been done after all under the word reduction. Abstract
Living organisms dynamically and flexibly operate a great number of components. As one of such redundant control mechanisms, low-dimensional coordinative structures among multiple components have been investigated. However, structures extracted from the conventional statistical dimensionality reduction methods do not reflect dynamical properties in principle. Here we regard coordinative structures in biological periodic systems with unknown and redundant dynamics as a nonlinear limit-cycle oscillation, and apply a data-driven operator-theoretic spectral analysis, which obtains dynamical properties of coordinative structures such as frequency and phase from the estimated eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a composition operator. Using segmental angle series during human walking as an example, we first extracted the coordinative structures based on dynamics; e.g. the speed-independent coordinative structures in the harmonics of gait frequency. Second, we discovered the speed-dependent time-evolving behaviours of the phase by estimating the eigenfunctions via our approach on the conventional low-dimensional structures. We also verified our approach using the double pendulum and walking model simulation data. Our results of locomotion analysis suggest that our approach can be useful to analyse biological periodic phenomena from the perspective of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Abstract
Optimization of mutual synchronization between a pair of limit-cycle oscillators with weak symmetric coupling is considered in the framework of the phase-reduction theory. By generalizing our previous study [S. Shirasaka, N. Watanabe, Y. Kawamura, and H. Nakao, Optimizing stability of mutual synchronization between a pair of limit-cycle oscillators with weak cross coupling, Phys. Rev. E 96, 012223 (2017)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.96.012223] on the optimization of cross-diffusion coupling matrices between the oscillators, we consider optimization of mutual coupling signals to maximize the linear stability of the synchronized state, which are functionals of the past time sequences of the oscillator states. For the case of linear coupling, optimization of the delay time and linear filtering of coupling signals are considered. For the case of nonlinear coupling, general drive-response coupling is considered and the optimal response and driving functions are derived. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

Abstract
Electrical coupling between neurons is broadly present across brain areas and is typically assumed to synchronize network activity. However, intrinsic properties of the coupled cells can complicate this simple picture. Many cell types with electrical coupling show a diversity of post-spike subthreshold fluctuations, often linked to subthreshold resonance, which are transmitted through electrical synapses in addition to action potentials. Using the theory of weakly coupled oscillators, we explore the effect of both subthreshold and spike-mediated coupling on synchrony in small networks of electrically coupled resonate-and-fire neurons, a hybrid neuron model with damped subthreshold oscillations and a range of post-spike voltage dynamics. We calculate the phase response curve using an extension of the adjoint method that accounts for the discontinuous post-spike reset rule. We find that both spikes and subthreshold fluctuations can jointly promote synchronization. The subthreshold contribution is strongest when the voltage exhibits a significant post-spike elevation in voltage, or plateau potential. Additionally, we show that the geometry of trajectories approaching the spiking threshold causes a "reset-induced shear" effect that can oppose synchrony in the presence of network asymmetry, despite having no effect on the phase-locking of symmetrically coupled pairs.

Abstract
We consider optimization of the linear stability of synchronized states between a pair of weakly coupled limit-cycle oscillators with cross coupling, where different components of state variables of the oscillators are allowed to interact. On the basis of the phase reduction theory, we derive the coupling matrix between different components of the oscillator states that maximizes the linear stability of the synchronized state under given constraints on the overall coupling intensity and the stationary phase difference. The improvement in the linear stability is illustrated by using several types of limit-cycle oscillators as examples.
