High island densities in pulsed laser deposition: causes and implications

Evolution of the surface atomic structure of multielement oxide films: curse or blessing?

Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to gain atomic-scale insights into the heteroepitaxy of lanthanum-strontium manganite (LSMO, La1-xSrxMnO3-δ, x ≈ 0.2) on SrTiO3(110). LSMO is a perovskite oxide characterized by several composition-dependent surface reconstructions. The flexibility of the surface allows it to incorporate nonstoichiometries during growth, which causes the structure of the surface to evolve accordingly. This happens up to a critical point, where phase separation occurs, clusters rich in the excess cations form at the surface, and films show a rough morphology. To limit the nonstoichiometry introduced by non-optimal growth conditions, it proves useful to monitor the changes in surface atomic structures as a function of the PLD parameters and tune the latter accordingly.

Construction and evaluation of an ultrahigh-vacuum-compatible sputter deposition source

A sputter deposition source for the use in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is described, and some properties of the source are analyzed. The operating principle is based on the design developed by Mayr et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 84, 094103 (2013)], where electrons emitted from a filament ionize argon gas and the Ar⁺ ions are accelerated to the target. In contrast to the original design, two grids are used to direct a large fraction of the Ar⁺ ions to the target, and the source has a housing cooled by liquid nitrogen to reduce contaminations. The source has been used for the deposition of zirconium, a material that is difficult to evaporate in standard UHV evaporators. At an Ar pressure of 9×10^-6 mbar in the UHV chamber and moderate emission current, a highly reproducible deposition rate of ≈1 ML in 250 s was achieved at the substrate (at a distance of ≈50 mm from the target). Higher deposition rates are easily possible. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows a high purity of the deposited films. Depending on the grid voltages, the substrate gets mildly sputtered by Ar⁺ ions; in addition, the substrate is also reached by electrons from the negatively biased sputter target.

Dynamic Scaling and Island Growth Kinetics in Pulsed Laser Deposition of SrTiO_{3}

We use real-time diffuse surface x-ray diffraction to probe the evolution of island size distributions and its effects on surface smoothing in pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of SrTiO_{3}. We show that the island size evolution obeys dynamic scaling and two distinct regimes of island growth kinetics. Our data show that PLD film growth can persist without roughening despite thermally driven Ostwald ripening, the main mechanism for surface smoothing, being shut down. The absence of roughening is concomitant with decreasing island density, contradicting the prevailing view that increasing island density is the key to surface smoothing in PLD. We also report a previously unobserved crossover from diffusion-limited to attachment-limited island growth that reveals the influence of nonequilibrium atomic level surface transport processes on the growth modes in PLD. We show by direct measurements that attachment-limited island growth is the dominant process in PLD that creates step flowlike behavior or quasistep flow as PLD "self-organizes" local step flow on a length scale consistent with the substrate temperature and PLD parameters.

Unusual cluster shapes and directional bonding of an fcc metal: Pt/Pt(111)

Small clusters of Pt adatoms grown on Pt(111) exhibit a preference for the formation of linear chains, which cannot be explained by simple diffusion-limited aggregation. Density functional theory calculations show that short chains are energetically favorable to more compact configurations due to strong directional bonding by d(z)(2)-like orbitals, explaining the stability of the chains. The formation of the chains is governed by substrate distortions, leading to funneling towards the chain ends.
