Rapid Stabilization of Immiscible Fluids using Nanostructured Interfaces via Surfactant Association

The Surfactant Role on a Droplet Passing through a Constricted Microchannel in a Pressure-Driven Flow: A Lattice Boltzmann Study

The role of surfactants in the flow of a droplet driven by a pressure gradient through a constricted microchannel is simulated by using our recently developed lattice Boltzmann method. We first study the surfactant role on a droplet flowing through a microchannel with a shrunken square section under different surfactant concentrations and capillary numbers (i.e., imposed pressure gradients). As the surfactant concentration increases, the droplet flow regime first changes from the flow regime I of the droplet getting stuck at the entrance of the constricted channel to the flow regime II of the droplet flowing through the constricted channel with breakup, and then to the flow regime III of the droplet flowing through the constricted channel without breakup. As the capillary number increases, the surfactant role on the number of mother droplets breaking up and the time of mother droplets completely flowing through the constricted section tend to decrease, suggesting that the surfactant effects are gradually weakened. Then, a phase diagram describing how the surfactant concentration and capillary number affect the droplet flow regime is presented. As the surfactant concentration increases, the critical capillary number that distinguishes droplet flow regimes I from II gradually decreases, while the critical capillary number that distinguishes droplet flow regimes II from III first increases and then decreases.

Stabilizing Liquids Using Interfacial Supramolecular Assemblies

Stabilizing liquids based on supramolecular assembly (non-covalent intermolecular interactions) has attracted significant interest, due to the increasing demand for soft, liquid-based devices where the shape of the liquid is far from the equilibrium spherical shape. The components comprising these interfacial assemblies must have sufficient binding energies to the interface to prevent their ejection from the interface when the assemblies are compressed. Here, we highlight recent advances in structuring liquids based on non-covalent intermolecular interactions. We describe some of the progress made that reveals structure-property relationships. In addition to treating advances, we discuss some of the limitations and provide a perspective on future directions to inspire further studies on structured liquids based on supramolecular assembly.

Associative Liquid-In-Liquid 3D Printing Techniques for Freeform Fabrication of Soft Matter

Shaping soft materials into prescribed 3D complex designs has been challenging yet feasible using various 3D printing technologies. For a broader range of soft matters to be printable, liquid-in-liquid 3D printing techniques have emerged in which an ink phase is printed into 3D constructs within a bath. Most of the attention in this field has been focused on using a support bath with favorable rheology (i.e., shear-thinning behavior) which limits the selection of materials, impeding the broad application of such techniques. However, a growing body of work has begun to leverage the interaction or association of the two involved phases (specifically at the liquid-liquid interface) to fabricate complex constructs from a myriad of soft materials with practical structural, mechanical, optical, magnetic, and communicative properties. This review article has provided an overview of the studies on such associative liquid-in-liquid 3D printing techniques along with their fundamentals, underlying mechanisms, various characterization techniques used for ensuring the structural stability, and practical properties of prints. Also, the future paths with the potential applications are discussed.

Rheological analysis of a novel phenylboronic acid-closomer gel

This study aims to characterize the rheological behavior of a novel phenylboronic acid (PBA)-based closomer nanoconjugate (Closogel) with potential application in pharmaceutical formulation. PBA was used as a cross-linking agent and model (antiviral) drug. The PBA loaded Closogel chemical structure was analyzed by boron (¹¹B) NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The Closogel and control hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) gel were analyzed under oscillatory and continuous shear rheometry followed by mathematical modeling to characterize the gel flow behavior. The chemical analysis confirmed the existence of characteristic borate esters peaks and Boron chemical shifts within Closogel spectra. Due to its more flexible molecular structure, undiluted Closogel exhibited lower, yield stress, viscosity and relaxation time (30 Pa &163 Pa.s & 0.21 s vs 45 Pa &301 Pa.s & 0.39 s for HEC). Both Closogel and HEC gels exhibited a thixotropic behavior. The plastic undiluted and pseudoplastic 2.5 % w/v aqueous Closogels were more viscous than elastic (tan (δ) > 1) in the linear viscoelastic range. The Herschel-Bulkley model showed a significant fitting to all experimental data (R² > 0.95). The 0.25 % w/v aqueous Closogel nearly exhibited a Newtonian behavior with a flow index of 0.93. These data suggest that PBA loaded Closomer-based gels have similar rheological behavior, with lower complex modulus than that of HEC gels, and they can be a promising platform used for delivery of topical antiviral or other bioactive agents.

Spongy all-in-liquid materials by in-situ formation of emulsions at oil-water interfaces

Printing a structured network of functionalized droplets in a liquid medium enables engineering collectives of living cells for functional purposes and promises enormous applications in processes ranging from energy storage to tissue engineering. Current approaches are limited to drop-by-drop printing or face limitations in reproducing the sophisticated internal features of a structured material and its interactions with the surrounding media. Here, we report a simple approach for creating stable liquid filaments of silica nanoparticle dispersions and use them as inks to print all-in-liquid materials that consist of a network of droplets. Silica nanoparticles stabilize liquid filaments at Weber numbers two orders of magnitude smaller than previously reported in liquid-liquid systems by rapidly producing a concentrated emulsion zone at the oil-water interface. We experimentally demonstrate the printed aqueous phase is emulsified in-situ; consequently, a 3D structure is achieved with flexible walls consisting of layered emulsions. The tube-like printed features have a spongy texture resembling miniaturized versions of “tube sponges” found in the oceans. A scaling analysis based on the interplay between hydrodynamics and emulsification kinetics reveals that filaments are formed when emulsions are generated and remain at the interface during the printing period. Stabilized filaments are utilized for printing liquid-based fluidic channels.

All-in-liquid printing promises applications from energy storage to drug delivery and tissue engineering. Here, authors present the in-situ generation of layered emulsion in a fraction of a second at the oil-water interface forming 3D tube-like structures in a liquid medium.

Investigating the morphological transitions in an associative surfactant ternary system

Associative surfactants systems involving polar oils have recently been shown to stabilize immiscible liquids by forming nanostructures at the liquid interface and have been used to print soft materials. Although these associating surfactant systems show great promise for creating nanostructured soft materials, a fundamental understanding of the self-assembly process is still unknown. In this study, a ternary phase diagram for a system of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate (CPCl), a polar oil (oleic acid), and water is established using experiment and simulation, to study the equilibrium phase behavior. A combination of visual inspection, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and rheological measurements was employed to establish the phase behavior and properties of the self-assembled materials. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is used to simulate the formation of the morphologies in this system and support the experimental results. The ternary phase diagram obtained from the simulations agrees with the experimental results, indicating the robustness of the computational simulation as a supplement to the mesoscale experimental systems. We observe that morphological transitions (e.g., micelle-to-bilayer and vesicle-to-lamellar) are in agreement between experiments and simulations across the ternary diagram. DPD simulations correctly predict that associative surfactant systems form new nanoscale phases due to the co-assembly of the components. The established ternary phase diagram and the DPD model pave the way towards predicting and controlling the formation of different mesostructures like lamellar or vesicles, opening new avenues to tailor and synthesize desired morphologies for applications related to liquid-in-liquid 3D printing.

Visualizing Assembly Dynamics of All-Liquid 3D Architectures

To better exploit all-liquid 3D architectures, it is essential to understand dynamic processes that occur during printing one liquid in a second immiscible liquid. Here, the interfacial assembly and transition of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (H₆ TPPS) over time provides an opportunity to monitor the interfacial behavior of nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) during all-liquid printing. The formation of J-aggregates of H₄ TPPS^2- at the interface and the interfacial conversion of the J-aggregates of H₄ TPPS^2- to H-aggregates of H₂ TPPS^4- is demonstrated by interfacial rheology and in situ atomic force microscopy. Equally important are the chromogenic changes that are characteristic of the state of aggregation, where J-aggregates are green in color and H-aggregates are red in color. In all-liquid 3D printed structures, the conversion in the aggregate state with time is reflected in a spatially varying change in the color, providing a simple, direct means of assessing the aggregation state of the molecules and the mechanical properties of the assemblies, linking a macroscopic observable (color) to mechanical properties.

Fabricating Robust Constructs with Internal Phase Nanostructures via Liquid-in-Liquid 3D Printing

The ability to print soft materials into predefined architectures with programmable nanostructures and mechanical properties is a necessary requirement for creating synthetic biomaterials that mimic living tissues. However, the low viscosity of common materials and lack of required mechanical properties in the final product present an obstacle to the use of traditional additive manufacturing approaches. Here, a new liquid-in-liquid 3D printing approach is used to successfully fabricate constructs with internal nanostructures using in situ self-assembly during the extrusion of an aqueous solution containing surfactant and photocurable polymer into a stabilizing polar oil bath. Subsequent photopolymerization preserves the nanostructures created due to surfactant self-assembly at the immiscible liquid-liquid interface, which is confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. Mechanical properties of the photopolymerized prints are shown to be tunable based on constituent components of the aqueous solution. The reported 3D printing approach expands the range of low-viscosity materials that can be used in 3D printing, and enables robust constructs production with internal nanostructures and spatially defined features. The reported approach has broad applications in regenerative medicine by providing a platform to print self-assembling biomaterials into complex tissue mimics where internal supramolecular structures and their functionality control biological processes, similar to natural extracellular matrices.

Surfactant-Induced Interfacial Aggregation of Porphyrins for Structuring Color-Tunable Liquids

Locking nonequilibrium shapes of liquids into targeted architectures by interfacial jamming of nanoparticles is an emerging area in material science. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (H₆ TPPS) shows three different aggregation states that present an absorption imaging platform to monitor the assembly and jamming of supramolecular polymer surfactants (SPSs) at the liquid/liquid interface. The interfacial interconversion of H₆ TPPS, specifically H₄ TPPS^2- dissolved in water, from J- to an H-aggregation was induced by strong electrostatic interactions with amine-terminated polystyrene dissolved in toluene at the water/toluene interface. This resulted in color-tunable liquids due to interfacial jamming of the SPSs formed between H₄ TPPS^2- and amine-terminated polystyrene. However, the formed SPSs cannot lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids. In addition, a self-wrinkling behavior was observed when amphiphilic triblock copolymers of PS-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) were used to interact with H₄ TPPS^2- . Subsequently, the SPSs formed can lock in nonequilibrium shapes of liquids.

Overcoming Rayleigh-Plateau instabilities: Stabilizing and destabilizing liquid-metal streams via electrochemical oxidation

Liquids typically form droplets when exiting a nozzle. Jets--cylindrical streams of fluid-can form transiently at higher fluid velocities, yet interfacial tension rapidly drives jet breakup into droplets via the Rayleigh-Plateau instability. Liquid metal is an unlikely candidate to form stable jets since it has enormous interfacial tension and low viscosity. We report that electrochemical anodization significantly lowers the effective tension of a stream of metal, transitioning it from droplets to long (long lifetime and length) wires with 100-μm diameters without the need for high velocities. Whereas surface minimization drives Rayleigh-Plateau instabilities, these streams of metal increase in surface area when laid flat upon a surface due to the low tension. The ability to tune interfacial tension over at least three orders of magnitude using modest potential (<1 V) enables new approaches for production of metallic structures at room temperature, on-demand fluid-in-fluid structuring, and new tools for studying and controlling fluid behavior.
