Evidence of Extreme Ultraviolet Superfluorescence in Xenon

Stimulated X-ray emission spectroscopy

We describe an emerging hard X-ray spectroscopy technique, stimulated X-ray emission spectroscopy (S-XES). S-XES has the potential to characterize the electronic structure of 3d transition metal complexes with spectral information currently not reachable and might lead to the development of new ultrafast X-ray sources with properties beyond the state of the art. S-XES has become possible with the emergence of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) that provide intense femtosecond X-ray pulses that can be employed to generate a population inversion of core-hole excited states resulting in stimulated X-ray emission. We describe the instrumentation, the various types of S-XES, the potential applications, the experimental challenges, and the feasibility of applying S-XES to characterize dilute systems, including the Mn4Ca cluster in the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II.

Coherent Amplification of Continuous Laser Field via Superfluorescence

Superfluorescence (SF) is collective spontaneous emission wherein radiators spontaneously synchronize, resulting in an intense single-pulse emission. The avalanche radiation of photons is initiated by the first photon emitted into the SF propagation mode. Because this process is stochastic, the absolute phase of the SF changes randomly from shot to shot. We demonstrate that this phase can be controlled by seeding the SF with a resonant continuous-wave (CW) laser. The seed light was weak enough not to cause the stimulated emission but strong enough to inject the first photon into the SF propagation mode prior to injection by the radiators themselves. Cross-correlation measurements between the seeded SF and CW laser revealed that the seed light was coherently amplified by the SF. The amplification factor for the instantaneous intensity was estimated to be 7 orders of magnitude. These results will pave the way for the development of new types of quantum optical amplifiers.

Proposal for Observing XUV-Induced Rabi Oscillation Using Superfluorescent Emission

Intense x-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light sources have been available for decades, however, due to weak nonlinear interaction in the XUV photon energy range, observation of Rabi oscillation induced by XUV pulse remains a very challenging experimental task. Here we suggest a scheme where photoionization of a He medium by an intense XUV pump pulse is followed by a strong population inversion and Rabi oscillation at the He^{+}(1s-3p) transition and is accompanied by superfluorescence (SF) of the 7.56 eV pulse at the He^{+}(3p-2s) transition. Our numerical simulations show that the Rabi oscillation at the He^{+}(1s-3p) transition induced by an XUV pulse with photon energy 48.36 eV results in significant signatures in the SF spectra, allowing us to identify and characterize the XUV induced Rabi-oscillatory regime. The proposed scheme provides a sensitive tool to monitor and control ultrafast nonlinear dynamics in atoms and molecules triggered by intense XUV.

Stable and Ultrafast Blue Cavity-Enhanced Superfluorescence in Mixed Halide Perovskites

Cavity-enhanced superfluorescence (CESF) in quantum dot (QD) system is an ultrafast and intense lasing generated by combination of quantum coupling effect and optically stimulated amplification effect, which can provide a new idea for realizing high quality blue light sources and address the limitation of conventional inefficient blue light sources. Modifying halide composition is a straightforward method to achieve blue emission in perovskite QD system. However, the spectral instability introduced by photoinduced halide phase segregation and low coupling efficiency between QDs and optical cavities make it challenging to achieve stable blue CESF in such halide-doped QD system. Herein, long-range-ordered, densely packed CsPbBr₂ Cl QD-assembled superlattice microcavities in which the two core issues can be appropriately addressed are developed. The QD superlattice structure facilitates excitonic delocalization to decrease exciton-phonon coupling, thus alleviating photoinduced phase segregation. By combination of theoretical analysis and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements, the underlying photoinduced phase segregation mitigation mechanism in mixed halide superlattices is clarified. Based on the CsPbBr₂ Cl QD superlattices with regularly geometrical structures, in which the gain medium can be strongly coupled to the naturally formed microcavity, stable and ultrafast (3 ps) blue CESF with excellent optical performance (threshold ≈33 µJ cm^-2 , quality factor ≈1900) is realized.

Cascade and yoked superfluorescence detected by sum frequency generation spectroscopy

We investigated the superfluorescent decay process of dense rubidium atomic vapor in a cell. Using a femtosecond laser pulse, the atoms were excited from the 5S ground state to the 6P state. The 2.73μm and 1.37μm fields were generated on the cascaded decay, 6P → 6S → 5P, which further stimulated the 780 nm forward emission on the 5P → 5S transition. Using sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, we observed all emission fields and the time delay between them, with sufficient temporal resolution. The experimental results were successfully reproduced using semiclassical simulations.

Generation of intense phase-stable femtosecond hard X-ray pulse pairs

Coherent nonlinear spectroscopies and imaging in the X-ray domain provide direct insight into the coupled motions of electrons and nuclei with resolution on the electronic length scale and timescale. The experimental realization of such techniques will strongly benefit from access to intense, coherent pairs of femtosecond X-ray pulses. We have observed phase-stable X-ray pulse pairs containing more than 3 × 107 photons at 5.9 keV (2.1 Å) with ∼1 fs duration and 2 to 5 fs separation. The highly directional pulse pairs are manifested by interference fringes in the superfluorescent and seeded stimulated manganese Kα emission induced by an X-ray free-electron laser. The fringes constitute the time-frequency X-ray analog of Young’s double-slit interference, allowing for frequency domain X-ray measurements with attosecond time resolution.

Dialogue on analytical and ab initio methods in attoscience

The perceived dichotomy between analytical and ab initio approaches to theory in attosecond science is often seen as a source of tension and misconceptions. This Topical Review compiles the discussions held during a round-table panel at the 'Quantum Battles in Attoscience' cecam virtual workshop, to explore the sources of tension and attempt to dispel them. We survey the main theoretical tools of attoscience-covering both analytical and numerical methods-and we examine common misconceptions, including the relationship between ab initio approaches and the broader numerical methods, as well as the role of numerical methods in 'analytical' techniques. We also evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of analytical as well as numerical and ab initio methods, together with their role in scientific discovery, told through the case studies of two representative attosecond processes: non-sequential double ionisation and resonant high-harmonic generation. We present the discussion in the form of a dialogue between two hypothetical theoreticians, a numericist and an analytician, who introduce and challenge the broader opinions expressed in the attoscience community.

Observation of Seeded Mn Kβ Stimulated X-Ray Emission Using Two-Color X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Pulses

Kβ x-ray emission spectroscopy is a powerful probe for electronic structure analysis of 3d transition metal systems and their ultrafast dynamics. Selectively enhancing specific spectral regions would increase this sensitivity and provide fundamentally new insights. Recently we reported the observation and analysis of Kα amplified spontaneous x-ray emission from Mn solutions using an x-ray free-electron laser to create the 1s core-hole population inversion [Kroll et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 133203 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.133203]. To apply this new approach to the chemically more sensitive but much weaker Kβ x-ray emission lines requires a mechanism to outcompete the dominant amplification of the Kα emission. Here we report the observation of seeded amplified Kβ x-ray emission from a NaMnO_{4} solution using two colors of x-ray free-electron laser pulses, one to create the 1s core-hole population inversion and the other to seed the amplified Kβ emission. Comparing the observed seeded amplified Kβ emission signal with that from conventional Kβ emission into the same solid angle, we obtain a signal enhancement of more than 10^{5}. Our findings are the first important step of enhancing and controlling the emission of selected final states of the Kβ spectrum with applications in chemical and materials science.

Population inversion X-ray laser oscillator

Oscillators are at the heart of optical lasers, providing stable, transform-limited pulses. Until now, laser oscillators have been available only in the infrared to visible and near-ultraviolet (UV) spectral region. In this paper, we present a study of an oscillator operating in the 5- to 12-keV photon-energy range. We show that, using the [Formula: see text] line of transition metal compounds as the gain medium, an X-ray free-electron laser as a periodic pump, and a Bragg crystal optical cavity, it is possible to build X-ray oscillators producing intense, fully coherent, transform-limited pulses. As an example, we consider the case of a copper nitrate gain medium generating ∼ 5 × [Formula: see text] photons per pulse with 37-fs pulse length and 48-meV spectral resolution at 8-keV photon energy. Our theoretical study and simulation of this system show that, because of the very large gain per pass, the oscillator saturates and reaches full coherence in four to six optical-cavity transits. We discuss the feasibility and design of the X-ray optical cavity and other parts of the oscillator needed for its realization, opening the way to extend X-ray-based research beyond current capabilities.
