Ion heating due to rotation and collision in magnetized plasma

A simple replacement of tungsten filament hot cathodes by DC heated LaB6 rod and its noise characteristics with laser-induced fluorescence

Hot cathode discharges are common plasma sources for fundamental plasma physics studies and other applications due to their quiescent and relatively simple properties, and tungsten filaments are commonly used for the ease of heating them. Recently, tungsten filaments are increasingly being replaced by less luminous alternatives, such as barium oxide or lanthanum hexaboride. These materials can emit electrons at temperatures close to 1000 K lower than tungsten, greatly reducing their blackbody radiations. This results in significant improvement in signal recovery for active spectral diagnostic, such as laser-induced fluorescence. However, these less luminous cathodes often come in vastly more complicated designs than those of tungsten hot cathodes and are much more expensive to procure and difficult to operate. In this paper, we present a simple, low cost direct current heated design of a LaB₆ cathode that is manufactured at suitable dimensions and make a comparison of the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) signal-to-noise ratio of this LaB₆ hot cathode discharge with that of a typical tungsten filament discharge, revealing that LaB₆ has, indeed, an improved LIF signal-to-noise ratio compared with the tungsten filament.

Ion velocity distribution function investigated inside an unstable magnetized plasma exhibiting a rotating nonlinear structure

The frequent situation where a strongly nonlinear rotating structure develops in a linear magnetized plasma column is investigated experimentally with emphasis on the ion velocity distribution function (IVDF). Most often, a mode m=2 appears exhibiting a large density and potential perturbation with angular frequency slightly above the ion cyclotron frequency. For the first time the spatiotemporal evolution of the IVDF is studied using time-resolved laser induced fluorescence to explore the ion's interaction with the nonlinear wave propagating inside the column and at the origin of plasma transport outside the limiter. The ion fluid exhibits an alternance from azimuthal to radial velocity due to the electric field inside the rotating structure. A fluid model also allows us to locally reconstruct the self-consistent electric field evolution which contradicts all existing theories.

Observation of anomalous ion heating by broadband drift-wave turbulence

Using laser induced fluorescence and passive spectroscopy on a magnetically confined low-temperature plasma, anomalous ion heating is observed which exceeds collisional heating from the electrons by a factor of up to five. Direct wave heating due to the 2.45 GHz microwave as well as stochastic heating by large-amplitude fluctuations could be ruled out as explanations. Good quantitative agreement is found when comparing the missing power in the ion species with heating power due to the dissipation of drift-wave turbulence. This turbulent energy transfer into the ion channel could have important consequences for the interpretation of transport in fusion plasmas.

Phase-resolved measurements of ion velocity in a radio-frequency sheath

The time-dependent argon-ion velocity distribution function above and within the plasma sheath of an rf-biased substrate has been measured using laser-induced fluorescence in a commercial plasma processing tool. Discharge parameters were such that the 2.2 MHz rf-bias period was on the order of the ion transit time through the sheath (τ{ion}/τ{rf}=0.3). This work embodies the first time-resolved measurement of ion velocity distribution functions within an rf-biased sheath over a large area (30 cm diameter) silicon wafer substrate.

Rotation of a strongly magnetized hydrogen plasma column determined from an asymmetric Balmer-beta spectral line with two radiating distributions

A potential buildup in front of a magnetized cascaded arc hydrogen plasma source is explored via E x B rotation and plate potential measurements. Plasma rotation approaches thermal speeds with maximum velocities of 10 km/s. The diagnostic for plasma rotation is optical emission spectroscopy on the Balmer-beta line. Asymmetric spectra are observed. A detailed consideration is given on the interpretation of such spectra with a two distribution model. This consideration includes radial dependence of emission determined by Abel inversion of the lateral intensity profile. Spectrum analysis is performed considering Doppler shift, Doppler broadening, Stark broadening, and Stark splitting.
