Low frequency dynamics of disordered XY spin chains and pinned density waves: from localized spin waves to soliton tunneling

Dynamical conductivity of disordered quantum chains

ABSTRACT

We study the transport properties of a one-dimensional quantum system with disorder. We numerically compute the frequency dependence of the conductivity of a fermionic chain with nearest-neighbor interaction and a random chemical potential by using the Chebyshev matrix product state (CheMPS) method. As a benchmark, we investigate the noninteracting case first. Comparison with exact diagonalization and analytical solutions demonstrates that the results of CheMPS are reliable over a wide range of frequencies. We then calculate the dynamical conductivity spectra of the interacting system for various values of the interaction and disorder strengths. In the high-frequency regime, the conductivity decays as a power law, with an interaction-dependent exponent. This behavior is qualitatively consistent with the bosonized field theory predictions, although the numerical evaluation of the exponent shows deviations from the analytically expected values. We also compute the characteristic pinning frequency at which a peak in the conductivity appears. We confirm that it is directly related to the inverse of the localization length, even in the interacting case. We demonstrate that the localization length follows a power law of the disorder strength with an exponent dependent on the interaction, and find good quantitative agreement with the field theory predictions. In the low-frequency regime, we find a behavior consistent with the one of the noninteracting system ω 2 ( ln ω ) 2 independently of the interaction. We discuss the consequences of our finding for experiments in cold atomic gases.

Bose-glass phase of a one-dimensional disordered Bose fluid: Metastable states, quantum tunneling, and droplets

We study a one-dimensional disordered Bose fluid using bosonization, the replica method, and a nonperturbative functional renormalization-group approach. We find that the Bose-glass phase is described by a fully attractive strong-disorder fixed point characterized by a singular disorder correlator whose functional dependence assumes a cuspy form that is related to the existence of metastable states. At nonzero momentum scale k, quantum tunneling between the ground state and low-lying metastable states leads to a rounding of the cusp singularity into a quantum boundary layer (QBL). The width of the QBL depends on an effective Luttinger parameter K_{k}∼k^{θ} that vanishes with an exponent θ=z-1 related to the dynamical critical exponent z. The QBL encodes the existence of rare "superfluid" regions, controls the low-energy dynamics, and yields a (dissipative) conductivity vanishing as ω^{2} in the low-frequency limit. These results reveal the glassy properties (pinning, "shocks," or static avalanches) of the Bose-glass phase and can be understood within the "droplet" picture put forward for the description of glassy (classical) systems.

Microwave Spectroscopy of a Weakly Pinned Charge Density Wave in a Superinductor

A chain of small Josephson junctions (a.k.a. superinductor) emerged recently as a high-inductance, low-loss element of superconducting quantum devices. We notice that the intrinsic parameters of a typical superinductor in fact place it into the Bose glass universality class for which the propagation of waves in a sufficiently long chain is hindered by pinning. Its weakness provides for a broad crossover from the spectrum of well-resolved plasmon standing waves at high frequencies to the low-frequency excitation spectrum of a pinned charge density wave. We relate the scattering amplitude of microwave photons reflected off a superinductor to the dynamics of a Bose glass. The dynamics at long and short scales compared to the Larkin pinning length determines the low- and high-frequency asymptotes of the reflection amplitude.

AC conductivity of a quantum Hall line junction

We present a microscopic model for calculating the AC conductivity of a finite length line junction made up of two counter- or co-propagating single mode quantum Hall edges with possibly different filling fractions. The effect of density-density interactions and a local tunneling conductance (σ) between the two edges is considered. Assuming that σ is independent of the frequency ω, we derive expressions for the AC conductivity as a function of ω, the length of the line junction and other parameters of the system. We reproduce the results of Sen and Agarwal (2008 Phys. Rev. B 78 085430) in the DC limit ([Formula: see text]), and generalize those results for an interacting system. As a function of ω, the AC conductivity shows significant oscillations if σ is small; the oscillations become less prominent as σ increases. A renormalization group analysis shows that the system may be in a metallic or an insulating phase depending on the strength of the interactions. We discuss the experimental implications of this for the behavior of the AC conductivity at low temperatures.

Controlling soliton excitations in Heisenberg spin chains through the magic angle

We study the nonlinear dynamics of collective excitation in an N -site XXZ quantum spin chain, which is manipulated by an oblique magnetic field. We show that, when the tilted field is applied along the magic angle, theta_{0}=+/-arccossqrt[13] , the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain becomes isotropic and thus an freely propagating spin wave is stimulated. Also, in the regime of tilted angles larger and smaller than the magic angle, two types of nonlinear excitations appear: bright and dark solitons.

Disorder induced transition into a one-dimensional wigner glass

The destruction of quasi-long-range crystalline order as a consequence of strong disorder effects is shown to accompany the strict localization of all classical plasma modes of one-dimensional Wigner crystals at T=0. We construct a phase diagram that relates the structural phase properties of Wigner crystals to a plasmon delocalization transition recently reported. Deep inside the strictly localized phase of the strong disorder regime, we observe glasslike behavior. However, well into the critical phase with a plasmon mobility edge, the system retains its crystalline composition. We predict that a transition between the two phases occurs at a critical value of the relative disorder strength. This transition has an experimental signature in the ac conductivity as a local maximum of the largest spectral amplitude as a function of the relative disorder strength.

Absence of the Mott glass phase in 1D disordered fermionic systems

We study the competition between the Mott and the Anderson insulating state in a one-dimensional disordered fermionic system. The notorious difficulties associated with strong coupling phases are avoided by using a new description in terms of the kink energies (or instanton surface tension) of the electronic displacement pattern. The approach has some similarities to the description of the flat phase of surfaces undergoing a roughening transition. Tracing back both a finite compressibility and a nonzero ac conductivity to vanishing kink energy we exclude the existence of an intermediate Mott-glass phase in systems with short range interaction only. In systems with long range interaction the Anderson insulating phase exhibits the features of a Mott glass however. The phase diagram is constructed from combining the information from the renormalization group flow, the kink energy, and simple rescaling analysis.

Transport of charge-density waves in the presence of disorder: classical pinning versus quantum localization

We consider the interplay of the elastic pinning and the Anderson localization in the transport properties of a charge-density wave in one dimension, within the framework of the Luttinger model in the limit of strong repulsion. We address a conceptually important issue of which of the two disorder-induced phenomena limits the mobility more effectively. We argue that the interplay of the classical and quantum effects in transport of a very rigid charge-density wave is quite nontrivial: the quantum localization sets in at a temperature much smaller than the pinning temperature, whereas the quantum localization length is much smaller than the pinning length.

Some generic aspects of bosonic excitations in disordered systems

We consider noninteracting bosonic excitations in disordered systems, emphasizing generic features of quadratic Hamiltonians in the absence of Goldstone modes. We discuss relationships between such Hamiltonians and the symmetry classes established for fermionic systems. We examine the density rho(omega) of excitation frequencies omega, showing how the universal behavior rho(omega) approximately omega(4) for small omega can be obtained both from general arguments and by detailed calculations for one-dimensional models.
