Inelastic x-ray scattering study of exciton properties in an organic molecular crystal

Complex momentum behavior of electronic excitations in β-CuPc

The electronic excitation spectrum of β-CuPc has been investigated using electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. Our results demonstrate a rather strong momentum dependence of the lowest exciton features. Both main components show a negative dispersion, and the momentum dependence indicates that this negative dispersion is parallel to the molecular stacks in β-CuPc. In addition, the spectral shape also varies upon increasing momentum transfer indicating a particular momentum dependence of the inter-molecular interactions.

Tailoring two-dimensional PTCDA-melamine self-assembled architectures at room temperature by tuning molecular ratio

Engineering and tuning multi-component supramolecular self-assemblies on surfaces is one of the challenges of nanotechnology. We use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the influence of molecular ratio on the self-assembly of PTCDA-melamine structures on Au(111)-(22 x complex square root of 3). Our observations reveal that three different chiral supramolecular networks having a PTCDA:melamine ratio of 3:2, 1:2, 1:4 can be selectively created by tuning the ratio of molecules deposited on the surface. The 1:2 ratio network having melamine in excess has been observed previously but the 1:4 network has not yet been reported. In comparison, the multi-component 3:2 network having PTCDA in excess is a completely new structure.

Dynamical reconstruction of the exciton in LiF with inelastic x-ray scattering

The absorption of light by materials proceeds through the formation of excitons, which are states in which an excited electron is bound to the valence hole it vacated. Understanding the structure and dynamics of excitons is important, for example, for developing technologies for light-emitting diodes or solar energy conversion. However, there has never been an experimental means to study the time-dependent structure of excitons directly. Here, we use causality-inverted inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to image the charge-transfer exciton in the prototype insulator LiF, with resolutions Delta t = 20.67 as (2.067 x 10(-17) s) in time and Delta x = 0.533 A (5.33 x 10(-11) m) in space. Our results show that the exciton has a modulated internal structure and is coherently delocalized over two unit cells of the LiF crystal (approximately 8 A). This structure changes only modestly during the course of its life, which establishes it unambiguously as a Frenkel exciton and thus amenable to a simplified theoretical description. Our results resolve an old controversy about excitons in the alkali halides and demonstrate the utility of IXS for imaging attosecond electron dynamics in condensed matter.
