Active Neural Interface Circuits and Systems for Selective Control of Peripheral Nerves: A Review

Interfaces with peripheral nerves have been widely developed to enable bioelectronic control of neural activity. Peripheral nerve neuromodulation shows great potential in addressing motor dysfunctions, neurological disorders, and psychiatric conditions. The integration of high-density neural electrodes with stimulation and recording circuits poses a challenge in the design of neural interfaces. Recent advances in active electrode strategies have achieved improved reliability and performance by implementing in-situ control, stimulation, and recording of neural fibers. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art neural interface systems that comprise a range of neural electrodes, neurostimulators, and bio-amplifier circuits, with a special focus on interfaces for the peripheral nerves. A discussion on the efficacy of active electrode systems and recommendations for future directions conclude this paper.

Brain-machine and muscle-machine bio-sensing methods for gesture intent acquisition in upper-limb prosthesis control: a review

This paper presents a review of a number of bio-sensing methods for gesture intent signal acquisition in control tasks for upper-limb prosthesis. The paper specifically provides a breakdown of the control task in myoelectric prosthesis, and in addition, highlights and describes the importance of the acquisition of a high-quality bio-signal. The paper also describes commonly used invasive and non-invasive brain and muscle machine interfaces such as electroencephalography, electrocorticography, electroneurography, surface electromyography, sonomyography, mechanomyography, near infra-red, force sensitive resistance/pressure, and magnetoencephalography. Each modality is reviewed based on its operating principle and limitations in gesture recognition, followed by respective advantages and disadvantages. Also described within this paper, are multimodal sensing approaches, which involve data fusion of information from various sensing modalities for an enhanced neuromuscular bio-sensing source. Using a semi-systematic review methodology, we are able to derive a novel tabular approach towards contrasting the various strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed bio-sensing methods towards gesture recognition in a prosthesis interface. This would allow for a streamlined method of down selection of an appropriate bio-sensor given specific prosthesis design criteria and requirements. The paper concludes by highlighting a number of research areas that require more work for strides to be made towards improving and enhancing the connection between man and machine as it concerns upper-limb prosthesis. Such areas include classifier augmentation for gesture recognition, filtering techniques for sensor disturbance rejection, feeling of tactile sensations with an artificial limb.

Micro-folded 3D neural electrodes fully integrated in polyimide

Recent neural interfaces are characterized by high functionality and good adaptation to the target tissue. Still, the underlying manufacturing process is mainly planar and so are the device and contact surface. Therefore, three-dimensional structures to contact neuronal tissue are desired to gain higher selectivity. In the present study, local bending structures integrated in flexible electrode arrays based on polyimide are investigated. The bending is achieved by the contraction of a second polyimide (Durimide) that is embedded into grooves with a width of a few micrometers. The angle of the bending can be controlled with a high accuracy from 3 to 20 degrees by changing the geometry of the grooves and the imidization temperature These bending structures can be combined to achieve any desired angle for specific applications.

On the viability of implantable electrodes for the natural control of artificial limbs: review and discussion

The control of robotic prostheses based on pattern recognition algorithms is a widely studied subject that has shown promising results in acute experiments. The long-term implementation of this technology, however, has not yet been achieved due to practical issues that can be mainly attributed to the use of surface electrodes and their highly environmental dependency. This paper describes several implantable electrodes and discusses them as a solution for the natural control of artificial limbs. In this context "natural" is defined as producing control over limb movement analogous to that of an intact physiological system. This includes coordinated and simultaneous movements of different degrees of freedom. It also implies that the input signals must come from nerves or muscles that were originally meant to produce the intended movement and that feedback is perceived as originating in the missing limb without requiring burdensome levels of concentration. After scrutinizing different electrode designs and their clinical implementation, we concluded that the epimysial and cuff electrodes are currently promising candidates to achieving a long-term stable and natural control of robotic prosthetics, provided that communication from the electrodes to the outside of the body is guaranteed.
