Increasing the sensor channels: a solution for the pressing offsets that cause the physiological parameter inaccuracy in radial artery pulse signal acquisition

Introduction: In studies of pulse wave analysis, single-channel sensors only adopt single temporal pulse signals without spatial information to show pulse-feeling patterns. Multi-channel arterial pulse signals, also named as three-dimensional pulse images (3DPIs), provide the spatial and temporal characteristics of radial pulse signals. When involving single or few-channel sensors, pressing offsets have substantial impacts on obtaining inaccurate physiological parameters like tidal peak (P2). Methods: This study discovers the pressing offsets in multi-channel pulse signals and analyzes the relationship between the pressing offsets and time of P2 (T2) by qualifying the pressing offsets. First, we employ a data acquisition system to capture 3DPIs. Subsequently, the errorT2 is developed to qualify the pressing offsets. Results: The outcomes display a central low and peripheral high pattern. Additionally, the errorT2 increase as the distances from the artery increase, particularly at the radial ends of the blood flow direction. For every 1 mm increase in distances between sensing elements and center sensing elements, the errorT2 in the radial direction escalates by 4.87%. When the distance is greater than 3.42 mm, the errorT2 experiences a sudden increase. Discussion: The results show that increasing the sensor channels can overcome the pressing offsets in radial pulse signal acquisition.

Wearable Multi-Channel Pulse Signal Acquisition System Based on Flexible MEMS Sensor Arrays with TSV Structure

Micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensors play a significant role in pulse wave acquisition. However, existing MEMS pulse pressure sensors bound with a flexible substrate by gold wire are vulnerable to crush fractures, leading to sensor failure. Additionally, establishing an effective mapping between the array sensor signal and pulse width remains a challenge. To solve the above problems, we propose a 24-channel pulse signal acquisition system based on a novel MEMS pressure sensor with a through-silicon-via (TSV) structure, which connects directly to a flexible substrate without gold wire bonding. Firstly, based on the MEMS sensor, we designed a 24-channel pressure sensor flexible array to collect the pulse waves and static pressure. Secondly, we developed a customized pulse preprocessing chip to process the signals. Finally, we built an algorithm to reconstruct the three-dimensional pulse wave from the array signal and calculate the pulse width. The experiments verify the high sensitivity and effectiveness of the sensor array. In particular, the measurement results of pulse width are highly positively correlated with those obtained via infrared images. The small-size sensor and custom-designed acquisition chip meet the needs of wearability and portability, meaning that it has significant research value and commercial prospects.

Recent Advances in Polymer Composites for Flexible Pressure Sensors

Pressure sensors show significant potential applications in health monitoring, bio-sensing, electronic skin, and tactile perception. Consequently, tremendous research interest has been devoted to the development of high-performance pressure sensors. In this paper, recent progress on the polymer composite-based flexible pressure sensor is reviewed. The parameters of pressure sensors, including sensitivity, linear response range, detection limit, response speed, and reliability, are first introduced. Secondly, representative types of pressure sensors and relevant working principles are introduced and discussed. After that, the applications in human physiology monitoring, health monitoring, artificial skin, and self-powered smart system are listed and discussed in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and outlook of polymer composite-based flexible sensors are summarized at the end of this review paper. This work should have some impact on the development of high-performance flexible pressure sensors.

On the development of low power wearable devices for assessment of physiological vital parameters: a systematic review

Aim

Smart wearable devices for continuous monitoring of health conditions have bbecome very important in the healthcare sector to acquire and assess the different physiological parameters. This paper reviews the nature of physiological signals, desired vital parameters, role of smart wearable devices, choices of wearable devices and design considerations for wearable devices for early detection of health conditions.

Subject and methods

This article provides designers with information to identify and develop smart wearable devices based on the data extracted from a literature survey on previously published research articles in the field of wearable devices for monitoring vital parameters.

Results

The key information available in this article indicates that quality signal acquisition, processing and longtime monitoring of vital parameters requires smart wearable devices. The development of smart wearable devices with the listed design criteria supports the developer to design a low power wearable device for continuous monitoring of patient health conditions.

Conclusion

The wide range of information gathered from the review indicates that there is a huge demand for smart wearable devices for monitoring health conditions at home. It further supports tracking heath status in the long term via monitoring the vital parameters with the support of wireless communication principles.

Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Design and Fabrication of a Flexible Gravimetric Sensor Based on a Thin-Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Resonator

Sensing systems are becoming less and less invasive. In this context, flexible materials offer new opportunities that are impossible to achieve with bulky and rigid chips. Standard silicon sensors cannot be adapted to curved shapes and are susceptible to big deformations, thus discouraging their use in wearable applications. Another step forward toward minimising the impacts of the sensors can be to avoid the use of cables and connectors by exploiting wireless transmissions at ultra-high frequencies (UHFs). Thin-film bulk acoustic wave resonators (FBARs) represent the most promising choice among all of the piezoelectric microelectromechanical system (MEMS) resonators for the climbing of radio frequencies. Accordingly, the fabrication of FBARs on flexible and wearable substrates represents a strategic step toward obtaining a new generation of highly sensitive wireless sensors. In this work, we propose the design and fabrication of a flexible gravimetric sensor based on an FBAR on a polymeric substrate. The resonator presents one of the highest electromechanical coupling factors in the category of flexible AlN-based FBARs, equal to 6%. Moreover, thanks to the polymeric support layer, the presence of membranes can be avoided, which leads to a faster and cheaper fabrication process and higher robustness of the structure. The mass sensitivity of the device was evaluated, obtaining a promising value of 23.31 ppm/pg. We strongly believe that these results can pave the way to a new class of wearable MEMS sensors that exploit ultra-high-frequency (UHF) transmissions.

Wearable Heart Rate Monitoring Device Communicating in 5G ISM Band for IoHT

Advances in wearable device technology pave the way for wireless health monitoring for medical and non-medical applications. In this work, we present a wearable heart rate monitoring platform communicating in the sub-6GHz 5G ISM band. The proposed device is composed of an Aluminium Nitride (AlN) piezoelectric sensor, a patch antenna, and a custom printed circuit board (PCB) for data acquisition and transmission. The experimental results show that the presented system can acquire heart rate together with diastolic and systolic duration, which are related to heart relaxation and contraction, respectively, from the posterior tibial artery. The overall system dimension is 20 mm by 40 mm, and the total weight is 20 g, making this device suitable for daily utilization. Furthermore, the system allows the simultaneous monitoring of multiple subjects, or a single patient from multiple body locations by using only one reader. The promising results demonstrate that the proposed system is applicable to the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT), and particularly Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) applications.

A Review of Recent Advances in Vital Signals Monitoring of Sports and Health via Flexible Wearable Sensors

In recent years, vital signals monitoring in sports and health have been considered the research focus in the field of wearable sensing technologies. Typical signals include bioelectrical signals, biophysical signals, and biochemical signals, which have applications in the fields of athletic training, medical diagnosis and prevention, and rehabilitation. In particular, since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in real-time interest in personal health. This has created an urgent need for flexible, wearable, portable, and real-time monitoring sensors to remotely monitor these signals in response to health management. To this end, the paper reviews recent advances in flexible wearable sensors for monitoring vital signals in sports and health. More precisely, emerging wearable devices and systems for health and exercise-related vital signals (e.g., ECG, EEG, EMG, inertia, body movements, heart rate, blood, sweat, and interstitial fluid) are reviewed first. Then, the paper creatively presents multidimensional and multimodal wearable sensors and systems. The paper also summarizes the current challenges and limitations and future directions of wearable sensors for vital typical signal detection. Through the review, the paper finds that these signals can be effectively monitored and used for health management (e.g., disease prediction) thanks to advanced manufacturing, flexible electronics, IoT, and artificial intelligence algorithms; however, wearable sensors and systems with multidimensional and multimodal are more compliant.

High-Sensitivity Flexible Piezoresistive Pressure Sensor Using PDMS/MWNTS Nanocomposite Membrane Reinforced with Isopropanol for Pulse Detection

Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity and good linearity are in high demand to meet the long-term and accurate detection requirements for pulse detection. In this study, we propose a composite membrane pressure sensor using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTS) reinforced with isopropanol prepared by solution blending and a self-made 3D-printed mold. The device doped with isopropanol had a higher sensitivity and linearity owning to the construction of additional conductive paths. The optimal conditions for realizing a high-performance pressure sensor are a multiwalled carbon nanotube mass ratio of 7% and a composite membrane thickness of 490 μm. The membrane achieves a high linear sensitivity of −57.07 kΩ∙kPa⁻¹ and a linear fitting correlation coefficient of 98.78% in the 0.13~5.2 kPa pressure range corresponding to pulse detection. Clearly, this device has great potential for application in pulse detection.

Flexible Pressure Sensor Array with Multi-Channel Wireless Readout Chip

Flexible sensor arrays are widely used for wearable physiological signal recording applications. A high density sensor array requires the signal readout to be compatible with multiple channels. This paper presents a highly-integrated remote health monitoring system integrating a flexible pressure sensor array with a multi-channel wireless readout chip. The custom-designed chip features 64 voltage readout channels, a power management unit, and a wireless transceiver. The whole chip fabricated in a 65 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process occupies 3.7 × 3.7 mm², and the core blocks consume 2.3 mW from a 1 V supply in the wireless recording mode. The proposed multi-channel system is validated by measuring the ballistocardiogram (BCG) and pulse wave, which paves the way for future portable remote human physiological signals monitoring devices.

Wearable Pressure Sensors for Pulse Wave Monitoring

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. The rapid development of flexible sensing technologies and wearable pressure sensors have attracted keen research interest and have been widely used for long-term and real-time cardiovascular status monitoring. Owing to compelling characteristics, including light weight, wearing comfort, and high sensitivity to pulse pressures, physiological pulse waveforms can be precisely and continuously monitored by flexible pressure sensors for wearable health monitoring. Herein, an overview of wearable pressure sensors for human pulse wave monitoring is presented, with a focus on the transduction mechanism, microengineering structures, and related applications in pulse wave monitoring and cardiovascular condition assessment. The conceptualizations and methods for the acquisition of physiological and pathological information related to the cardiovascular system are outlined. The biomechanics of arterial pulse waves and the working mechanism of various wearable pressure sensors, including triboelectric, piezoelectric, magnetoelastic, piezoresistive, capacitive, and optical sensors, are also subject to systematic debate. Exemple applications of pulse wave measurement based on microengineering structured devices are then summarized. Finally, a discussion of the opportunities and challenges that wearable pressure sensors face, as well as their potential as a wearable intelligent system for personalized healthcare is given in conclusion.

A Wearable and Real-Time Pulse Wave Monitoring System Based on a Flexible Compound Sensor

Continuous monitoring of pulse waves plays a significant role in reflecting physical conditions and disease diagnosis. However, the current collection equipment cannot simultaneously achieve wearable and continuous monitoring under varying pressure and provide personalized pulse wave monitoring targeted different human bodies. To solve the above problems, this paper proposed a novel wearable and real-time pulse wave monitoring system based on a novel flexible compound sensor. Firstly, a custom-packaged pressure sensor, a signal stabilization structure, and a micro pressurization system make up the flexible compound sensor to complete the stable acquisition of pulse wave signals under continuously varying pressure. Secondly, a real-time algorithm completes the analysis of the trend of the pulse wave peak, which can quickly and accurately locate the best pulse wave for different individuals. Finally, the experimental results show that the wearable system can both realize continuous monitoring and reflecting trend differences and quickly locate the best pulse wave for different individuals with the 95% accuracy. The weight of the whole system is only 52.775 g, the working current is 46 mA, and the power consumption is 160 mW. Its small size and low power consumption meet wearable and portable scenarios, which has significant research value and commercialization prospects.

Assessment Parameters for Arrayed Pulse Wave Analysis and Application in Hypertensive Disorders

Study on the objectivity of pulse diagnosis is inseparable from the instruments to obtain the pulse waves. The single-pulse diagnostic instrument is relatively mature in acquiring and analysing pulse waves, but the pulse information captured by single-pulse diagnostic instrument is limited. The sensor arrays can simulate rich sense of the doctor's fingers and catch multipoint and multiparameter array signals. How to analyse the acquired array signals is still a major problem in the objective research of pulse diagnosis. The goal of this study was to establish methods for analysing arrayed pulse waves and preliminarily apply them in hypertensive disorders. While a sensor array can be used for the real-time monitoring of twelve pulse wave channels, for each subject in this study, only the pulse wave signals of the left hand at the "guan" location were obtained. We calculated the average pulse wave (APW) per channel over a thirty-second interval. The most representative pulse wave (MRPW) and the APW were matched by their correlation coefficient (CC). The features of the MRPW and the features that corresponded to the array pulse volume (APV) parameters were identified manually. Finally, a clinical trial was conducted to detect these feature performance indicators in patients with hypertensive disorders. The independent-samples t-tests and the Mann-Whitney U-tests were performed to assess the differences in these pulse parameters between the healthy and hypertensive groups. We found that the radial passage (RP) APV h1, APV h3, APV h4, APV h3/h1 (P < 0.01), and APV h4/h1 (P < 0.05) were significantly higher in the hypertensive group than in the healthy group; the intermediate passage (IP) APV h4, APV h3/h1 (P < 0.05), and APV h4/h1 (P < 0.01) and the mean APV h3, APV h3/h1 (P < 0.05), and APV h4/h1 (P < 0.01) were significantly higher in the hypertensive group than in the healthy group, and the ulnar passage (UP) APV h4/h1 (P < 0.05) was clearly elevated in the hypertensive group. These results provide a preliminary validation of this novel approach for determining the APV by arrayed pulse wave analysis. In conclusion, we identified effective indicators of hypertensive vascular function. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pulses comprise multidimensional information, and a sensor array could provide a better indication of TCM pulse characteristics. In this study, the validation of the arrayed pulse wave analysis demonstrates that the APV can reliably mirror TCM pulse characteristics.

Perceptions of traditional Chinese medicine doctors about using wearable devices and traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic instruments: A mixed-methodology study

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of traditional Chinese medicine doctors about wearable devices and diagnostic instruments and explore the factors that influence them.

Methods

Data on the perceptions of the traditional Chinese medicine doctors in Hangzhou, China, about wearable devices and diagnostic instruments were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. The author coded the interview responses using grounded theory. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in four traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in Hangzhou, China. The responses of 385 traditional Chinese medicine doctors were considered valid. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression models were used for analysis.

Results

This study categorized the perceptions of traditional Chinese medicine about wearable devices and traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic instruments under convenience, reliability, suitable population, machine usage scenario, and the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and information communication technology. Convenience encompassed portability and the convenience of carrying instruments or wearing the devices and operating them and the human-device interface. Reliability encompassed the underlying principles, accuracy, durability, and reference to diagnosis. Suitability for people encompassed age distinction and disease differentiation. Machine usage scenarios included use in daily life, educational institutions, and primary medical institutions. The combination of traditional Chinese medicine and information communication technology encompassed the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and wearable functions and diagnostic interpretation. The perceptions of traditional Chinese medicine doctors were affected by age, title, type of hospital, and specialty.

Conclusions

The use of wearable devices and traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic instruments has gradually been accepted by traditional Chinese medicine doctors. Traditional Chinese medicine doctors need to improve their knowledge and skills for information communication technology integration, and their standardized training should incorporate information communication technology and digital health.

A Flexible Pressure Sensor with Ink Printed Porous Graphene for Continuous Cardiovascular Status Monitoring

Flexible electronics with continuous monitoring ability a extensively preferred in various medical applications. In this work, a flexible pressure sensor based on porous graphene (PG) is proposed for continuous cardiovascular status monitoring. The whole sensor is fabricated in situ by ink printing technology, which grants it the potential for large-scale manufacture. Moreover, to enhance its long-term usage ability, a polyethylene terephthalate/polyethylene vinylacetate (PET/EVA)-laminated film is employed to protect the sensor from unexpected shear forces on the skin surface. The sensor exhibits great sensitivity (53.99/MPa), high resolution (less than 0.3 kPa), wide detecting range (0.3 kPa to 1 MPa), desirable robustness, and excellent repeatability (1000 cycles). With the assistance of the proposed pressure sensor, vital cardiovascular conditions can be accurately monitored, including heart rate, respiration rate, pulse wave velocity, and blood pressure. Compared to other sensors based on self-supporting 2D materials, this sensor can endure more complex environments and has enormous application potential for the medical community.

Highly Sensitive Flexible Iontronic Pressure Sensor for Fingertip Pulse Monitoring

The pulse is a key biomedical signal containing various human physiological and pathological information highly related to cardiovascular diseases. Pulse signals are often collected from the radial artery based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or by using flexible pressure sensors. However, the wrist wrapped with a flexible pressure sensor exhibits unstable signals under hand motion because of the concave surface of the wrist. By contrast, fingertips have a convex surface and therefore show great promises in stable and long-term pulse monitoring. Despite the promising potential, the fingertip pulse signal is weak, calling for highly sensitive detecting devices. Here, a highly sensitive and flexible iontronic pressure sensor with a linear sensitivity of 13.5 kPa^-1 , a swift response, and remarkable stability over 5000 loading/unloading cycles is developed. This sensor enables stable and high-resolution detection of pulse waveform under both static condition and finger motion. Fingertip pulse waveforms from subjects of different genders, age, and health conditions are collected and analyzed, suggesting that fingertip pulse information is highly similar to that of the radial artery. This work justifies that fingertip is an ideal platform for pulse signals monitoring, which would be a competitive alternative to existing complex health monitoring systems.

Temperature and Strain Compensation for Flexible Sensors Based on Thermosensation

Flexible sensors have wide applications in wearable electronics, health monitoring, humanoid robotics, and smart prosthesis. Problems of temperature drift and bending/stretching strain are challenging and should not be neglected in practical applications of flexible sensors. Here, we report a novel temperature and strain compensation method for thermosensation-based flexible sensors. Thermosensation is human-skin-inspired perception, which inspires diverse flexible sensors (pressure sensor, flow sensor, temperature sensor, material sensor, proximity sensor, etc.) and multisensory electronic skin. Thermosensation-based flexible sensors utilize thin-film sensing thermistors to detect external physical stimuli through perceptions of the conductive and convective heat transfers toward the surroundings, which enables high-density integration of multisensations while minimizing complexity due to the uniform sensing principle of thermistors that have simple structures and easy operations. To overcome the negative effects of temperature drift and bending/stretching strain in these flexible sensors, we propose to monolithically integrate a compensating thermistor that has a similar geometric shape and is of the same material with the sensing thermistor into a Wheatstone-bridge feedback circuit. When the sensing and compensating thermistors meet geometric similarity, the compensations of temperature and strain are self-sustained by a feedback control of a circuit. The effectiveness is validated through theoretical analysis and experiment measurements. As examples, flexible pressure sensor and flexible flow sensor with temperature and strain compensations are demonstrated. Results indicate that the temperature and strain effects can be tremendously eliminated using the proposed compensation method, which is fast, self-sustained, and expedient to realize. The compensation method enriches competences of flexible sensors and demonstrates competitive advantages for diverse flexible and stretching applications of wearable electronics.

A Wearable Sensor Using Structured Silver-Particle Reinforced PDMS for Radial Arterial Pulse Wave Monitoring

Human pulse signals contain important and useful physiological information for the auxiliary diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Here, a wearable pulse sensor based on piezo-thermic transduction is reported using a structured silver-particle reinforced polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, for monitoring radial arterial pulse waves. The structured silver-particle reinforced PDMS membrane is optimally designed to meet the specific requirements on sensitivity, linearity, and effective preload measuring range for pulse detection by adjusting the air gap volume fraction and silver particle volume fraction of the structured material. The sensor is endowed with high sensitivity, good linearity in preload measuring range, allowing to detect the subtle pulse waveforms of subjects at different ages under different contact pressures, such as superficial (Fu), medium (Zhong) and deep (Chen). The developed pulse device provides a promising approach for homecare pulse monitoring.
