Weak Vestibular Response in Persistent Developmental Stuttering

Vibrational energy created at the larynx during speech will deflect vestibular mechanoreceptors in humans (Todd et al., 2008; Curthoys, 2017; Curthoys et al., 2019). Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), an indirect measure of vestibular function, was assessed in 15 participants who stutter, with a non-stutter control group of 15 participants paired on age and sex. VEMP amplitude was 8.5 dB smaller in the stutter group than the non-stutter group (p = 0.035, 95% CI [−0.9, −16.1], t = −2.1, d = −0.8, conditional R² = 0.88). The finding is subclinical as regards gravitoinertial function, and is interpreted with regard to speech-motor function in stuttering. There is overlap between brain areas receiving vestibular innervation, and brain areas identified as important in studies of persistent developmental stuttering. These include the auditory brainstem, cerebellar vermis, and the temporo-parietal junction. The finding supports the disruptive rhythm hypothesis (Howell et al., 1983; Howell, 2004) in which sensory inputs additional to own speech audition are fluency-enhancing when they coordinate with ongoing speech.

Dielectric relaxation model of human blood as a superposition of Debye functions with relaxation times following a Modified-Weibull distribution

Dielectric spectroscopy of the human blood is a powerful and convenient non-invasive testing technique that can be used to diagnose diseases such as diabetes and leukemia. One needs to consider rigorous experimental procedures and mathematical models to make the results of this type of test comparable. The present paper will discuss previously published results to further investigate the statistical modeling of the dielectric properties of human blood. The analysis shows that previously published results were related to Modified Weibull (MW) distributions of relaxation times, not Gaussian distributions, as reported. This re-analysis prevents the ill definition of fitting parameters, making sure they present physically justifiable values. Besides, for fluids presenting a Modified Weibull distribution of relaxation times, novel exact and closed-form expressions for the real and imaginary parts of complex permittivities were obtained in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. Also, a high accuracy approximation was built for the imaginary part of the complex permittivity, creating an easy-to-use alternative expression for practitioners. The new results are used to fit experimental results for human blood, showing that more robust estimators are built for the parameters involved, which can be used as thresholds to classify the dielectric behavior of blood as normal (healthy) or anomalous (sick).

Electrochemical Impedance Characterization of Blood Cell Suspensions. Part 1: Basic Theory and Application to Two-Phase Systems

Electrochemical impedance spectra of composite materials contain information on the topological arrangement, volume fraction, and shape of particles, as well as the dielectric properties of the matrix and particles. The objective of this study is to investigate how these parameters affect the dielectric spectrum and what reliable information can be extracted from experimental data. The main attention was focused on systems with dielectric behavior similar to that of human blood. Mostly plasma and erythrocytes determine the dielectric properties of whole blood. Erythrocytes suspended in plasma can be considered as three-phase systems with single-shelled particles. A theoretical approach based on the effective medium theory is developed for calculating the effective permittivity and conductivity of three-phase composites at a wide frequency range (from 0 to 1 GHz). A finite-difference method is applied to model three-dimensional periodic structures. A special case of two-phase materials is used to demonstrate the influence of the shape and arrangement of particles on dielectric properties. Theoretical and numerical approaches are applied to two-phase composites with spherical, spheroidal and biconcave particles and are compared with each other and with published data. It is shown that two-phase composites exhibit only β-dispersion. In contrast to the quasi-static limit, the wide-bandwidth impedance spectroscopy makes it possible to distinguish between disordered and regular arrangements of spheroidal and biconcave particles. The results can be used to analyze the dielectric properties of blood, which is very promising for various medical applications. This study of two-phase composites can be further extended to three-phase composites.

Custom edge-element FEM solver and its application to eddy-current simulation of realistic 2M-element human brain phantom

Extensive research papers of three-dimensional computational techniques are widely used for the investigation of human brain pathophysiology. Eddy current analyzing could provide an indication of conductivity change within a biological body. A significant obstacle to current trend analyses is the development of a numerically stable and efficiency-finite element scheme that performs well at low frequency and does not require a large number of degrees of freedom. Here, a custom finite element method (FEM) solver based on edge elements is proposed using the weakly coupled theory, which separates the solution into two steps. First, the background field (the magnetic vector potential on each edge) is calculated and stored. Then, the electric scalar potential on each node is obtained by FEM based on Galerkin formulations. Consequently, the electric field and eddy current distribution in the object can be obtained. This solver is more efficient than typical commercial solvers since it reduces the vector eddy current equation to a scalar one, and reduces the meshing domain to just the eddy current region. It can therefore tackle complex eddy current calculations for models with much larger numbers of elements, such as those encountered in eddy current computation in biological tissues. An example is presented with a realistic human brain mesh of 2 million elements. In addition, with this solver, the equivalent magnetic field induced from the excitation coil is applied, and therefore there is no need to mesh the excitation coil. A Modeling Procedure of the Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy for Ionic Liquids

The dielectric spectroscopy (DS) measurement is an attractive noninvasive method to reveal the intrinsic information of biological materials and cell cultures. However, the presence of a double layer due to electrode polarization within the lower RF and microwave range significantly affects the accurate analysis of dielectric properties of ionic liquids. In this paper, we measure the broadband DS of five saline solutions with a microfluidic coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line sensor across the frequency range from 40 kHz to 110 GHz. Derived from a parallel-plate structure that is transformed from the quasi-TEM CPW sensor through a conformal mapping technique, a broadband spectroscopy modeling method is proposed, where a Cole-Cole function or a constant phase element formula is used depending on the ionic concentrations and the measurement window. Validation analysis on the five saline solutions demonstrates the capability of the modeling method in separating relaxation properties of the bulk sample from the double-layer effects.

Bioimpedance Detection of Oral Lichen Planus Used as Preneoplastic Model

INTRODUCTION

Bioimpedance is a measure of the electrical properties of biological tissues. In the last two decades bioimpedance has been successfully introduced in clinical diagnosis of cancer. It has been demonstrated that tumoral tissues often show lower bioimpedance values than healthy tissues. The aim of this work is to assess the bioimpedentiometric differences between healthy and Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) affected oral mucosa, taking attention to the erosive form which may represent a potential pre-cancerous condition.

METHODS

52 patients affected by OLP were recruited for bioimpedance examination of oral mucosa. Four electrical properties, resistance (R), reactance (Xc), phase angle (θ) and impedance (Z) of the tongue and of the intraoral mucosa, were measured.

RESULTS

We observed a significant increase of Z and a significant decrease of θ values in correspondence of OLP lesions compared to healthy oral mucosa, and a marked decrease of Z values in correspondence of erosive OLP lesions.

CONCLUSIONS

These results provide evidence of the usefulness of bioimpedance assay for the characterization of healthy and clinically OLP affected mucosa. Bioimpedance is a valid aid in the early detection and clinical monitoring of the suspicious lesions which could lead to a potentially malignant evolution. The present research article is a valuable addition to the scientific literature of cancer prevention, and our findings can be considered extremely encouraging as they represent the initial step for a more wide clinical study for better define the different cut-off values in the different precancerous conditions occurring in the oral mucosa.
