Design and Fabrication of a Novel Dual-Frequency Confocal Ultrasound Transducer for Microvessels Super-Harmonic Imaging

Tissue ultrasound imaging based on wavelet correlation analysis and pulse-inversion technique

BACKGROUND

Pulse-inversion-based tissue harmonic imaging has been utilized for many years because it can effectively eliminate the harmonic leakage and produce low side-lobe. However, the pulse inversion method is sensitive to imaging object movements, which may result in motion artifacts. Spatial resolution and contrast were limited.

OBJECTIVE

To improve ultrasound image quality by a new pulse-inversion-based tissue harmonic imaging technique.

METHODS

Continuous wavelet transform is applied to investigate the correlation between mother wavelet and the received echoes from two opposite pulses. To get a better correlation, a novel mother wavelet named 'tissue wavelet' is designed based on the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya- Kuznetsov (KZK) wave equation. Radio frequency data were obtained from open Ultrasonix SonixTouch imaging system. Experiments were carried on ultrasonic tissue phantom, human carotid artery and human liver.

RESULTS

The average improvement of lateral spatial resolution is 49.52% compared to pulse-inversion-based tissue second-harmonic Imaging (PIHI). Contrast ratio (CR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) increased by 5.55 dB and 1.40 dB over PIHI. Tissue wavelet performs better than Mexh and Morl wavelet in lateral spatial resolution, CR, and CNR.

CONCLUSION

The proposed technique effectively improves the imaging quality in lateral spatial resolution, CR, and CNR.

Near-Wall Cavitation Effect: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Cavitation has been the subject of abundant studies, but the internal mechanism of cavitation is less well known. In this article, a microlevel near-wall model was established by using LAMMPS to present the process of cavitation effect. The results of molecular dynamics simulation revealed the fluctuation process of the liquid near the wall with the change in pressure. Molecular dynamics was also used to evaluate the void volume fraction and density distribution of the system. The results exhibited that the cavitation process can be divided into two stages: the initial cavitation stage and the rapid growth stage. Based on these results, the effects of wettability and initial system temperature on the near-wall cavitation effect were demonstrated. The results indicated that the hydrophobic near-wall forms a gas layer to weaken the density fluctuation, while the hydrophilic wall is opposite. Increasing the temperature could positively affect molecular motion and cavitation. This work provides a theoretical basis for further exploration of the cavitation effect.

A total-internal-reflection-based Fabry-Pérot resonator for ultra-sensitive wideband ultrasound and photoacoustic applications

In photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging, optical transducers offer a unique potential to provide higher responsivity, wider bandwidths, and greatly reduced electrical and acoustic impedance mismatch when compared with piezoelectric transducers. In this paper, we propose a total-internal-reflection-based Fabry-Pérot resonator composed of a 12-nm-thick gold layer and a dielectric resonant cavity. The resonator uses the same Kretschmann configuration as surface plasmon resonators (SPR). The resonators were analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results were compared with those for an SPR for benchmarking. The 1.9-μm-thick-PMMA- and 3.4-μm-thick-PDMS-based resonators demonstrated responsivities of 3.6- and 30-fold improvements compared with the SPR, respectively. The measured bandwidths for the PMMA, PDMS devices are 110 MHz and 75 MHz, respectively. Single-shot sensitivity of 160 Pa is obtained for the PDMS device. The results indicate that, with the proposed resonator in imaging applications, sensitivity and the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved significantly without compromising the bandwidth.

Ultrawide Bandwidth High-Frequency Ultrasonic Transducers With Gradient Acoustic Impedance Matching Layer for Biomedical Imaging

The high-frequency ultrasonic transducers with larger bandwidths yield excellent imaging performance in the biomedical field. However, achieving perfect acoustic impedance matching from the piezo-element to the target medium in the operating frequency spectrum is still a challenge. Conventional matching layers are mostly fabricated by only one or two uniform materials which are limited by their acoustic property. We propose a novel composite matching layer with gradient acoustic impedance based on a 1-3 gradient composite structure and multilevel matching theory. The proposed gradient-composite matching layer applied for ultrasonic transducer provides efficient impedance matching and ultrawide bandwidth which can significantly improve the quality of biomedical imaging. The active aperture size of the matching layer is 5× 5 mm², and the overall thickness for five equivalent layers is 115 [Formula: see text]. The -6-dB bandwidth and the center frequency obtained by the ultrasonic transducer equipped with the 1-3 gradient composite matching layer are 141.7% and 22.3 MHz, respectively. The exceedingly good imaging performance of the fabricated ultrasonic transducer was demonstrated by the tungsten wire phantom and study on the biological tissues of a zebrafish and porcine eyeball. The theoretical and experimental results provide a novel train of thought for improving the quality of biomedical ultrasonic imaging.

Finite Element Analysis of Femoral-Acetabular Impingement (FAI) Based on Three-Dimensional Reconstruction

In order to solve the problem that people often have pain in the hip joint, it is more meaningful to study femoral-acetabular impingement syndrome in the future. This article aims to study the finite element analysis of femoral-acetabular impingement based on three-dimensional reconstruction. This paper proposes a selective image matching strategy. In the feature matching stage, all images are not matched in pairs, but the corresponding camera distance between the images is calculated initially, which has little effect on the number of features and greatly reduces the time of feature matching, thereby reducing the time cost of 3D reconstruction. In this experiment, a double-blind experiment was used to check the range of motion of all hip joints. Two senior radiologists read the obtained hip joint orthographic films to screen out the hip joint orthographic films that meet the requirements. Experimental data shows that although the initial matching points of the algorithm in this paper are lower than those of the traditional algorithm, the final number of matching points is higher than that of the traditional algorithm. When the final number of patches is fixed to 10000, the initial patch required by the algorithm in this paper is more than that required by the SAD algorithm, nearly 13%, but the total storage requirement is 56.4% of the SAD algorithm, which is a big improvement.

High-Frequency 0.36BiScO3-0.64PbTiO3 Ultrasonic Transducer for High-Temperature Imaging Application

( 1- x )BiScO₃- x PbTiO₃ (BS-PT) ceramics have excellent piezoelectricity and high Curie temperature at its morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) ( x = 0.64 ), so it is a promising piezoelectric material for fabricating high-temperature ultrasonic transducer (HTUT). Electric properties of 0.36BS-0.64PT ceramics were characterized at different temperatures, and an HTUT with the center frequency of about 15 MHz was designed by PiezoCAD based on the measuring results. The prepared HTUT was tested in a silicone oil bath at different temperatures systematically. The test results show that the HTUT can maintain a stable electrical resonance until 290 °C and get a clear echo response until 250 °C with slight changes of the center frequency. Then, a stepped metal block submerged in silicone oil was imaged by the HTUT until 250 °C. Velocity of silicone oil and axial resolution of the HTUT at different temperatures was calculated. The results verify the capability of 0.36BS-0.64PT-based HTUT for high-temperature ultrasonic imaging applications.

Gaussian Barebone Salp Swarm Algorithm with Stochastic Fractal Search for medical image segmentation: A COVID-19 case study

An appropriate threshold is a key to using the multi-threshold segmentation method to solve image segmentation problems, and the swarm intelligence (SI) optimization algorithm is one of the popular methods to obtain the optimal threshold. Moreover, Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) is a recently released swarm intelligent optimization algorithm. Compared with other SI optimization algorithms, the optimization solution strategy of the SSA still needs to be improved to enhance further the solution accuracy and optimization efficiency of the algorithm. Accordingly, this paper designs an effective segmentation method based on a non-local mean 2D histogram and 2D Kapur's entropy called SSA with Gaussian Barebone and Stochastic Fractal Search (GBSFSSSA) by combining Gaussian Barebone and Stochastic Fractal Search mechanism. In GBSFSSSA, the Gaussian Barebone and Stochastic Fractal Search mechanism effectively balance the global search ability and local search ability of the basic SSA. The CEC2017 competition data set is used to prove the algorithm's performance, and GBSFSSSA shows an absolute advantage over some typical competitive algorithms. Furthermore, the algorithm is applied in image segmentation of COVID-19 CT images, and the results are analyzed based on three different metrics: peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity (SSIM), and feature similarity (FSIM), which can lead to the conclusion that the overall performance of GBSFSSSA is better than the comparison algorithm and can effectively improve the segmentation of medical images. Therefore, it is justified that GBSFSSSA is a reliable and effective method in solving the multi-threshold image segmentation problem.

Substitution effects via aromaticity, polarizability, APT, AIM, IR analysis, and hydrogen adsorption in C20-nTin nanostructures: a DFT survey

In this paper, the substitution effects of titanium heteroatom(s) on aromaticity, the average isotropic polarizability (< α >), the atomic polar tensor (APT) charge, the electrostatic potential (ESP) map, and the atoms in molecule (AIM) analysis along with infrared (IR) spectroscopy of C₂₀ fullerene and its C_20-nTi_n derivatives (n = 1-5) are probed via density functional theory (DFT). The nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) specify that substitution effect causes more aromaticity character of the optimized heterofullerenes than benzene molecule and higher APT charge distribution upon surfaces of them than pure cage. The highest negative and positive APT charge distribution on carbons of C₁₅Ti₅ and titanium substitutions of C₁₆Ti_4-2 implies that these sites can be attacked more readily by electrophilic and nucleophilic regents, respectively. We are very pleased to state that isolating the Ti-Ti single bonds by intermediacy of one or two C atoms is an applicable strategy for attaining the highest APT charge distribution on Ti atoms of C₁₆Ti_4-2 as suitable hydrogen storage. AIM analysis of the studied C_20-nAl_n derivatives signifies the highest electron density (ρ (r)) of 0.294 a.u. and the highest positive Laplacian of electron density (∇²ρ (r)) of 0.190 a.u., at bond critical points (BCPs) of C-Ti bond in the most stable C₁₉Ti₁ species. This heterofullerene shows the lowest < α > between the studied structures. IR spectroscopy shows that exclusive of C₁₆Ti_4-1 (as transition state), the other optimized hollow cages (as global minima) have no imaginary frequency.

Nanomaterials in the Management of Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections

The exploration of multiplexed bacterial virulence factors is a major problem in the early stages of Escherichia coli infection therapy. Traditional methods for detecting Escherichia coli (E. coli), such as serological experiments, immunoassays, polymerase chain reaction, and isothermal microcalorimetry have some drawbacks. As a result, detecting E. coli in a timely, cost-effective, and sensitive manner is critical for various areas of human safety and health. Intelligent devices based on nanotechnology are paving the way for fast and early detection of E. coli at the point of care. Due to their specific optical, magnetic, and electrical capabilities, nanostructures can play an important role in bacterial sensors. Another one of the applications involved use of nanomaterials in fighting microbial infections, including E. coli mediated infections. Various types of nanomaterials, either used directly as an antibacterial agent such as metallic nanoparticles (NPs) (silver, gold, zinc, etc.), or as a nanocarrier to deliver and target the antibiotic to the E. coli and its infected area. Among different types, polymeric NPs, lipidic nanocarriers, metallic nanocarriers, nanomicelles, nanoemulsion/ nanosuspension, dendrimers, graphene, etc. proved to be effective vehicles to deliver the drug in a controlled fashion at the targeted site with lower off-site drug leakage and side effects.

Quantum chemical study the on interaction between sulfanilamide drug and MgO nanocluster

The adsorption and interaction of sulfanilamide (SA) with a pristine magnesium oxide (MgO) nano-cage was scrutinized through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All geometries were optimized at M06-2X/6-311G(d,p) level, and the single-point energy calculation was also carried out at the same level of theory. Also, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was carried out and the values related to Wiberg bond index (WBI), donor-acceptor interactions, and partial natural charges were inspected. The MgO nano-cage can adsorb SA more strongly with the adsorption energy (E_ads) of - 41.74 kcal/mol, corresponding to the stable configurations. In addition, NBO analysis showed that the donor-acceptor interactions with SA and the MgO nano-cage are stronger. Based on our computations, the HOMO-LUMO gap of the MgO nano-cage changed to a great extent following the adsorption of the SA molecule, which corresponds to the most stable configuration that leads to improved electrical conductivity of the MgO nano-cage. The change in the gap determines the sensing mechanism, which is associated with the change in the electrical conductivity. To calculate the recovery time, transition-state theory (TST) was employed. Based on our calculation, Mg₁₂O₁₂-SA complex composites possess a short recovery time for the desorption of SA. The results show that the MgO nano-cage is an ideal candidate to be employed for developing SA sensors with high efficiency.

Optimized Backing Layers Design for High Frequency Broad Bandwidth Ultrasonic Transducer

Ultrasonic transducers with broad bandwidth are considered to have high axial resolution and good ultrasound scanning flexibility for the clinical applications. The limitations of spatial resolution due to bandwidth are of great concern in ultrasound medical imaging. The method of acoustic impedance matching between the piezoelectric element and medium is commonly used to obtain broad bandwidth and high resolution. In this study, an optimized backing layer design was proposed to broaden the bandwidth by adding a tunable acoustic impedance matching layer of backing (AIMLB) between the backing layer and the piezoelectric ceramic element. The Mason equivalent circuit method was used to analyze the effect of the backing material composition and its structure on the bandwidth of the transducer. The optimized transducer was simulated using the finite-element method with the PZFlex software. Based on the PZFlex simulations, a 20-MHz ultrasonic transducer using the AIMLB with a bandwidth of approximately 92.29% was fabricated. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulations. The ultrasonic imaging indicated that the designed ultrasonic transducer with an additional AIMLB had high performance with good imaging capability.

Recent Development and Perspectives of Optimization Design Methods for Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Transducers

Apiezoelectric ultrasonic transducer (PUT) is widely used in nondestructive testing, medical imaging, and particle manipulation, etc., and the performance of the PUT determines its functional performance and effectiveness in these applications. The optimization design method of a PUT is very important for the fabrication of a high-performance PUT. In this paper, traditional and efficient optimization design methods for a PUT are presented. The traditional optimization design methods are mainly based on an analytical model, an equivalent circuit model, or a finite element model and the design parameters are adjusted by a trial-and-error method, which relies on the experience of experts and has a relatively low efficiency. Recently, by combining intelligent optimization algorithms, efficient optimization design methods for a PUT have been developed based on a traditional model or a data-driven model, which can effectively improve the design efficiency of a PUT and reduce its development cycle and cost. The advantages and disadvantages of the presented methods are compared and discussed. Finally, the optimization design methods for PUT are concluded, and their future perspectives are discussed.
