Abstract
Tyrosinase is a copper-containing enzyme which is widely distributed in nature (e.g., bacteria, mammals, fungi) and involved in two consecutive steps of melanin biosynthesis. In humans, an excessive production of melanin can determine hyperpigmentation disorders as well as neurodegenerative processes in Parkinson's disease. The development of molecules able to inhibit the high activity of the enzyme remain a current topic in medicinal chemistry, because the inhibitors reported so far present several side effects. Heterocycle-bearing molecules are largely diffuse in this sense. Due to their importance as biologically active compounds, we decided to report a comprehensive review of synthetic tyrosinase inhibitors possessing heterocyclic moieties reported within the last five years. For the reader's convenience, we classified them as inhibitors of mushroom tyrosinase (Agaricus bisporus) and human tyrosinase.

Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for about half of the world's population. Therefore, it is important to search for solutions that minimise losses and production costs for producers and ensure food quality and safety for consumers. Improved methods for the detection and monitoring of hidden infestations are useful for adopting infestation control measures. Chemical methods are used to prevent rice losses due to infestations; changing this situation, however, is of the utmost importance, as it harms the environment and human health. The management of infestation by controlled storage conditions, namely temperature and atmosphere composition and the use of current fossil-based packaging with modified atmospheres, is well recognised. The use of environmentally friendly solutions is promising, but it is necessary to perform a life-cycle assessment and cost analysis to evaluate their effectiveness. According to the principles of circular economy, the integration of the best-selected treatments/solutions for insect management, along with the use of biopackaging from rice by-products are recommended. This review describes the methods of detection and control of infestation as well as several promising alternatives to chemical treatments; however, more research is needed in order to obtain effective technological solutions that can be applied at an industrial scale.

Abstract
The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), is a major pest of stored grains throughout the world, which causes quantitative and qualitative losses of food commodities. Eucalyptus essential oils (EOs) possess insecticidal and repellent properties, which make them a potential option for insect control in stored grains with environmentally friendly properties. In the current study, the binding mechanism of tyramine (TA) as a control compound has been investigated by funnel metadynamics (FM) simulation toward the homology model of tyramine1 receptor (TyrR) to explore its binding mode and key residues involved in the binding mechanism. EO compounds have been extracted from the leaf and flower part of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and characterized by GC/MS, and their effectiveness has been evaluated by molecular docking and conventional molecular dynamic (CMD) simulation toward the TyrR model. The FM results suggested that Asp114 followed by Asp80, Asn91, and Asn427 are crucial residues in the binding and the functioning of TA toward TyrR in Sitophilus Oryzae. The GC/MS analysis confirmed a total of 54 and 31 constituents in leaf and flower, respectively, where most of the components (29) are common in both groups. This analysis also revealed the significant concentration of Eucalyptus and α-pinene in leaves and flower EOs. The docking followed by CMD was performed to find the most effective compound in Eucalyptus EOs. In this regard, butanoic acid, 3-methyl-, 3-methyl butyl ester (B12) and 2-Octen-1-ol, 3,7-dimethyl- (B23) from leaf and trans- β-Ocimene (G04) from flower showed the maximum dock score and binding free energy, making them the leading candidates to replace tyramine in TyrR. The MM-PB/GBSA and MD analysis proved that the B12 structure is the most effective compound in inhibition of TyrR.

Abstract
One of the major stored product pests, Indian meal moth causes the loss on the agriculture and food industries. This study was conducted to screen the insecticidal activity of ethanolic extracts and fractions partitioned by four different solvents [(1) n-hexane; (2) ether; (3) ethyl acetate; (4) water] from star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f.) against Plodia interpunctella larvae. Among all solvent-partitioned fractions, the strongest repellency was found for the n-hexane fraction of star anise extract. Solvent-solvent partitioning and chromatographic methods were further used to isolate and identify major anti-insect compounds from star anise extract. The results showed that trans-anethole (94.24%) was the major active compound showing an insect-repelling activity against P. interpunctella. Consequently, trans-anethole can be utilized as a main natural insect-repelling agent for controlling the P. interpunctella infestation. Abstract
BACKGROUND To improve the utilization rate of cinnamon essential oil and compensate for the shortcomings of its easy decomposition and oxidation, the microemulsion of cinnamon essential oil was prepared using Tween 80 and anhydrous ethanol as surfactant and cosurfactant, respectively. The effects of the surfactant type, Km value, preparation temperature and aqueous pH on the quality of the microemulsion were studied via a pseudo-ternary phase diagram. The slow-release performance of cinnamon essential oil microemulsion and the control performance of the insect repellent package on the rice weevil were characterized. RESULTS The results showed that, when Tween 80 was used as a surfactant and anhydrous ethanol was used as a cosurfactant, the Km value was 3:1, preparation temperature was 40 °C, aqueous pH was 5 and prepared cinnamon essential oil microemulsion was of the O/W type. The microemulsion had strong stability and a 81.5-nm concentrated particle size distribution, and possessed excellent embedding and sustained-release effects. The prepared insect repellent active package prolongs the use time and the effect of cinnamon essential oil. The repellent rate of the rice weevil was as high as 100% after 48 h, and the contact mortality and fumigation mortality rates of the rice weevil also reached 96.67% and 86.67%, respectively, after 96 h. CONCLUSION The prepared cinnamon essential oil microemulsion and active packaging had a good sustained-release effect. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In both public and private sectors, one can notice a strong interest in the topic of sustainable food and packaging. For a long time, the spotlight for optimization was placed on well-known examples of high environmental impacts, whether regarding indirect resource use (e.g., meat, dairy) or problems in waste management. Staple and hedonistic foods such as cereals and confectionary have gained less attention. However, these products and their packaging solutions are likewise of worldwide ecologic and economic relevance, accounting for high resource input, production amounts, as well as food losses and waste. This review provides a profound elaboration of the status quo in cereal and confectionary packaging, essential for practitioners to improve sustainability in the sector. Here, we present packaging functions and properties along with related product characteristics and decay mechanisms in the subcategories of cereals and cereal products, confectionary and bakery wares alongside ready-to-eat savories and snacks. Moreover, we offer an overview to formerly and recently used packaging concepts as well as established and modern shelf-life extending technologies, expanding upon our knowledge to thoroughly understand the packaging’s purpose; we conclude that a comparison of the environmental burden share between product and packaging is necessary to properly derive the need for action(s), such as packaging redesign.

Abstract
Flavorings and volatile biologically active substances, used by humans for various purposes, may potentially have fumigating, repellent, or attractive effects on various species of anthropod storage pests. Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val, 1863 (Tenebrionidae) and Sitophilus granarius (Linnaeus, 1758) (Curculionidae) are the two most abundant pests of grain and grain products; the damage they cause to stored products of horticulture is 5–20% of the total yield of grain crops. In the experiment, we video-recorded migratory activity of beetles and evaluated it according to standard time periods (10, 20, 30, 60, and 120 seconds after the start of the experiment). No reliable influence of the 15 tested flavoring substances (benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, toluene, hydroquinone, phenethyl alcohol, pinene, methylparaben, kojic acid, formic acid, isoamyl alcohol, tartaric acid, glycine, succinic acid, stearic acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) on moving activity of Tribolium confusum was found. Exposure to benzyl alcohol brought a reliable decrease in locomotor activity of Sitophilus granarius (it exerted an attractant effect on imagoes as compared with the variant of the experiment without aromatic substances): 6.09 times more imagoes of S. granarius remained at a minimal distance from the aroma source than in the control, 6.07 more while exposed to hydroquinone, 5.50 to phenethyl alcohol, 4.50 to glycine, 3.44 to EDTA, 3.30 to toluene, 3.18 to methylparaben, 2.84 to succinic acid, 2.65 to benzoic acid, and 2.15 more when exposed to formic acid compared with the control variant of the experiment. Other surveyed flavoring substances (benzyl alcohol, pinene, kojic acid, isoamyl alcohol, tartaric acid, and stearic acid) had no significant effect on migratory activity of imagoes of S. granarius. The results allow us to recommend benzyl alcohol, hydroquinone, phenethyl alcohol, and glycine as potential luring substances or components of multicomponent flavoring mixtures during the assessment of the number of S. granarius in grain storage and processing facilities.

Abstract
The selective application of insecticides is one of the cornerstones of integrated pest management (IPM) and management strategies for pest resistance to insecticides. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of the traditional and new methods for the application of gas, liquid, gel, and solid physical insecticide formulations to control stored-product and food industry urban pests from the taxa Acarina, Blattodea, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Psocoptera, and Zygentoma. Various definitions and concepts historically and currently used for various pesticide application formulations and methods are also described. This review demonstrates that new technological advances have sparked renewed research interest in the optimization of conventional methods such as insecticide aerosols, sprays, fumigants, and inert gases. Insect growth regulators/disruptors (IGRs/IGDs) are increasingly employed in baits, aerosols, residual treatments, and as spray-residual protectants for long-term stored-grain protection. Insecticide-impregnated hypoxic multilayer bags have been proven to be one of the most promising low-cost and safe methods for hermetic grain storage in developing countries. Insecticide-impregnated netting and food baits were originally developed for the control of urban/medical pests and have been recognized as an innovative technology for the protection of stored commodities. New biodegradable acaricide gel coatings and nets have been suggested for the protection of ham meat. Tablets and satchels represent a new approach for the application of botanicals. Many emerging technologies can be found in the form of impregnated protective packaging (insect growth regulators/disruptors (IGRs/IGDs), natural repellents), pheromone-based attracticides, electrostatic dust or sprays, nanoparticles, edible artificial sweeteners, hydrogels, inert baits with synthetic attractants, biodegradable encapsulations of active ingredients, and cyanogenic protective grain coatings. Smart pest control technologies based on RNA-based gene silencing compounds incorporated into food baits stand at the forefront of current strategic research. Inert gases and dust (diatomaceous earth) are positive examples of alternatives to synthetic pesticide products, for which methods of application and their integration with other methods have been proposed and implemented in practice. Although many promising laboratory studies have been conducted on the biological activity of natural botanical insecticides, published studies demonstrating their effective industrial field usage in grain stores and food production facilities are scarce. This review shows that the current problems associated with the application of some natural botanical insecticides (e.g., sorption, stability, field efficacy, and smell) to some extent echo problems that were frequently encountered and addressed almost 100 years ago during the transition from ancient to modern classical chemical pest control methods.

Previous study reported the development of insect-proof halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and food packaging; however, the duration of their insecticidal properties remains unclear. Here, we aimed to (1) demonstrate the duration of repellency of clove bud oil (CO) encapsulated by HNTs for more than 30 days, and (2) manufacture insect-proof film containing HNTs for commercial use. Also, the release behavior of CO from insect-resistant HNTs was evaluated and HNTs were applied to food packaging composed of polypropylene and low-density polyethylene films to prevent Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larva infestation. CO, a natural insecticide, was embedded with HNTs and polyethyleneimine (PEI) via vacuum pulling process to cause a slow and gradual release of CO. The sustained release profile of CO from CO-containing HNTs with a PEI coating [(HNTs/CO/layer-by-layer (LBL)] was verified by gas chromatography analysis. The repellent activity of HNTs/CO/LBL was observed for up to 46 days, whereas CO film and HNTs/CO film exhibited no insecticidal activities during the test period. After 30-day exposure, the HNTs/CO/LBL film exhibited a 7-day extension in the penetration test. To evaluate the insecticidal properties of the insect-proof film (HNTs/CO/LBL scale-up film) manufactured in an industrial facility, the inhibitory effects of HNTs/CO/LBL scale-up film on insect infestation was elucidated in both the segregation and combination tests. As a result, HNTs/CO/LBL alone or gravure-printed film treated with HNTs/CO/LBL were capable of protecting food from insect infestation. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Halloysite nanotubes containing natural insect repellent were applied to industrial production of food packaging. Commercial cornflake cereal packaging using insect-resistant film successfully inhibited pest infestation. Insect-proof film produced at an industrial facility can be utilized to protect processed food from insect infestation.

Abstract
The fumigant toxicity of eight individual essential oils (EOs; basil, cinnamon, eucalyptus, mandarin, oregano, peppermint, tea tree, and thyme) and one binary combination (thyme and oregano) for control of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae, were investigated. In bioassays, all individual and combined EOs were toxic to the rice weevil. Eucalyptus EO exhibited the highest toxicity among the individual EO treatments, causing 100% mortality at a minimum concentration of 0.8 µL/mL after 24 hr of exposure. The combination treatment of oregano and thyme EO displayed higher fumigant activity than the individual oregano or thyme treatments. A stable oil-in-water nanoemulsion was evaluated using high-pressure homogenization (microfluidization [MF]) and varying the pressure and number of cycles. The droplet size of the emulsions was found to decrease from 217 to 71 nm and encapsulation efficiency increased from 37% to 84% with increasing MF pressure and number of cycles. The optimum conditions for preparing the mixture of oregano and thyme EO nanoemulsions were evaluated to be homogenization pressure of 103 MPa and three cycles. Incorporating an oregano:thyme nanoemulsion (0.75%) into cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) containing chitosan (CH/CNC), methyl cellulose (MC/CNC), and polylactic acid (PLA/CNC) composite films resulted in extended diffusion matrices causing 32% to 51% rice weevil mortality after 14 days exposure. Irradiation at 200 Gray alone caused 79% mortality and increased to 100% when combined with the bioactive chitosan film containing the oregano:thyme nanoemulsion. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A binary combination of oregano:thyme has potential as a biopesticide against stored product pests. The encapsulation of EO nanoemulsions into biopolymeric support could be used for bioactive packaging to prevent food spoilage and extend shelf life. Combining bioactive films with irradiation can provide complete control of rice weevil in packaged rice. The system developed in this research may also be extended to explore other food-packaging films with various food models to control different types of stored pests.

Abstract
A multifunctional film with insect-repellent and antimicrobial activities was developed. Star anise (Illicium verum Hook. f.) oil (SO) proved to be effective in repelling Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae and was selected as an insect-repellent agent. Thymol, a compound that demonstrated strong growth inhibition activities against both Staphylococcus aureus and Penicillium roqueforti, was selected as an antimicrobial agent. Based on the release profile test of SO using various plastic films, polypropylene (30 μm; PP 30) and low-density polyethylene (20 μm; LDPE 20) were selected as laminated films for sustainable insect-repellent and strong antimicrobial effects, respectively. Further, polyethylene terephthalate (12 μm; PET 12) was selected as an intermediate barrier layer. Finally, structure of the multilayer film was designed as PP 30/SO/PET 12/thymol/LDPE 20. The developed film demonstrated insect-repellent activity for >3 weeks, antibacterial activity for >2 weeks, and antifungal activity for 1 week. The results indicated that the developed multilayer film structure possessed strong, sustained insect-repellent and antimicrobial effects, providing a new possibility for the industrial applications to food packaging. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A multifunctional active packaging film with insect-repellent and antimicrobial activities was developed. Star anise oil and thymol that showed insect-repellent and antimicrobial activities (antibacterial and antifungal activities), respectively, were added in coating layers in the multilayer film structure. The developed multilayer film proved an efficient insect-repellent activity against Plodia interpunctella for >3 weeks. Also, strong antibacterial and antifungal activities of the developed multilayer film were proved against Staphylococcus aureus and Penicillium roqueforti, respectively. The developed film has a potential for the industrial use to the food packaging material.
