Personalized 3D Printed Eye Gear for Microscopic Surgeons Amidst and beyond COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for enhanced protective measures for healthcare workers, particularly surgeons, who face a heightened risk of exposure to infectious aerosols. However, conventional eye protection equipment such as face shields, goggles, or glasses often leads to ergonomic discomfort and a reduced field of view (FOV), impeding surgeons' ability to perform microsurgical procedures with precision and ease. To address these limitations, this study aimed to develop personalized 3D-printed eye gear for microscopic surgeons based on facial anthropometry data. 3D scanning was employed to obtain facial data from ten neurosurgery residents. Utilizing computer-aided designing, eye gears tailored to the unique facial features of each participant were developed. Finite element analysis-based contact simulation was used to assess the pressure exerted by the eye gear. Multi-material 3D printing was employed to fabricate the personalized eye gear. Participants, while donning the eye gear, engaged in simulation-based micro suturing tasks at various magnifications of the operating microscope, and marked the FOV range. They provided feedback scores (1-10) on the effectiveness of the eye gear through a Likert scale questionnaire (Q1-Q8). Finite element analysis demonstrated uniform strain distribution on the face, indicating that the edges of the customized eye gear fit exactly to the user's face. The average scores for the questionnaire Q1 to Q8 ranged from 6.8 to 8.5, with an overall mean score of 7.6. This indicates that the developed eye gear was simple to use and did not cause any discomfort. Additionally, the average reduction in the FOV was only 10.93% across the different operating microscope magnifications. These findings highlight eye gear's potential to alleviate discomfort and enhance precision in microscopic surgeries. Consequently, personalized 3D-printed eye gear offers a promising solution for providing surgeons with a safe environment while preserving the benefits of the operating microscope.

Portrait of Montréal healthcare workers infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the first wave of the pandemic: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

During the first wave of COVID-19 in Québec, healthcare workers (HCWs) represented 25% of the cases in Montréal. A study was conducted to describe SARS-CoV-2-infected HCWs in Montréal, and certain workplace and household characteristics. Secondary objectives included estimating the associations between having had access to personal protective equipment (PPE) and training, and following self-isolation recommendations, and certain sociodemographic and workplace characteristics.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted, based on a stratified random sample, among Montréal HCWs who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 between March and July 2020. A total of 370 participants answered a telephone-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were conducted, followed by log binomial regressions to estimate the associations.

RESULTS

Study participants were mostly female (74%), born outside of Canada (65%), and identified as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC; 63%). In terms of healthcare positions, most were orderlies (40%) or registered nurses (20%). Half (52%) of the participants reported having had insufficient access to PPE and 30% reported having received no training related to SARS-CoV-2 infection prevention, with large proportions being BIPOC women. Working evening or night shifts decreased chances of having had sufficient access to PPE (OR 0.50; 0.30-0.83).

CONCLUSION

This study describes the profile of the HCWs who were infected during the first wave of the pandemic in Montréal. Recommendations include collecting comprehensive sociodemographic data on SARS-CoV-2 infections and ensuring equitable access to infection prevention and control training and PPE during health crises, particularly those at highest risk of exposure.

Public Health Management of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Australia: The Role of the Morrison Government

The Australian Commonwealth government has four health-related responsibilities during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: to provide national leadership; to manage external borders; to protect residents of residential aged care facilities; and to approve, procure and roll-out tests and vaccines. State governments are responsible for determining what public health measures are appropriate and implementing them-including managing the border quarantine arrangements and the testing, tracing, and isolation regime-and managing the hospital response. This paper analyses the national government's response to the pandemic and discusses why it has attracted a thesaurus of negative adjectives.

The impact of COVID-19 on Western Australian medical imaging clinical practice and workplace

Introduction

Medical imaging plays a key role in the management of patients with coronavirus disease‐2019 (COVID‐19). This field is at risk from the impacts of the pandemic on the practice and workplace of medical imaging professionals (MIPs). Recent research has explored this impact internationally and in various states of Australia; however, the impact of the pandemic on Western Australian (WA) MIPs is yet to be examined.

Methods

This cross‐sectional study aimed to address this issue by surveying clinically practicing WA MIPs on their experience of the impact of COVID‐19. The survey was conducted online between the 1^st and the 31^st of May 2021 and encompassed 101 clinical sites.

Results

Fifty‐one valid (17.1%) responses were recorded, and a majority (66.7%) of the participants were employed in public hospitals. The results showed that most participants (94.1%) perceived an impact on their clinical practice, with expressions of insufficient access to personal protective equipment (PPE). The use of all the appropriate PPE items were dependent on whether the participants were employed in a public hospital, private hospital, or a private practice (P = 0.001). Perceived imaging volume decrease across modalities did not differ significantly among the workplaces, except for interventional radiology (P = 0.006). The participants also expressed concerns about inadequate psychological support.

Conclusions

COVID‐19 has enhanced infection control procedures and modified the routine imaging patterns. Specifically, WA medical imaging centres have altered their PPE and cleaning procedures based on updated health advice. Efforts should be taken to strengthen the support provided to the staff members and to ensure adequate access to PPE supplies.
