Abstract
The Latinx population in the United States (U.S.) experiences significant tobacco and other substance use-related health disparities. Yet, little is known about the couse of combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes (dual use) in relation to substance use behavior among Latinx smokers. The present investigation compared English-speaking Latinx adults living in the United States who exclusively smoke combustible cigarettes versus dual users in terms of alcohol use and other drug use problem severity. Participants were 297 Hispanic/Latinx daily cigarette smokers (36.4% female, Mage = 35.9 years, SD = 8.87) recruited nationally across the United States using Qualtrics Panels to complete self-report measures of behavioral health outcomes. Five analysis of covariance models were conducted to evaluate differences in overall alcohol consumption, dependence, related problems, hazardous drinking, and drug use problem severity between exclusive combustible cigarette smokers (N = 205) and dual users (N = 92). Results indicated that dual users evinced greater levels of alcohol consumption, dependence, alcohol-related problems, and hazardous drinking compared to exclusive combustible cigarette smokers (ps < .001). Dual users also reported greater levels of drug use problems relative to exclusive combustible cigarette smokers (p < .001). The current findings are among the first to document that dual cigarette and e-cigarette use status (compared to exclusive combustible cigarette smoking) may serve as a clinically relevant risk indicator for a range of deleterious substance use problems among Latinx individuals. Future research is needed to corroborate these findings and examine dual-use status as a longitudinal predictor of alcohol and other substance-related problems. Abstract
The electronic cigarette (EC) was developed as an alternative to cigarette smoking. In less than a decade, the prevalence of past-month EC usage increased from 1.5 to 27.5 % among US high-school students. In the coming years, Asia-Pacific countries will have the highest sales of electronic nicotine/non-nicotine delivery systems (ENDS/ENNDS) after Western Europe. Based on the World Health Organization and Indian Council of Medical Research recommendations, India approved a complete ban on EC in 2019. Even though it has been three years since the ban, EC is still being sold in India's grey markets, where marketing is not regulated. In this narrative review, we discuss that vaping is not just a harm reduction strategy for tobacco smoking cessation but poses a serious threat to India's existing tobacco control efforts as well as the health of the country's young people.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Research reports a robust association between combustible cigarette use and alcohol use frequency and severity. Extension to the emerging landscape of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use is needed to inform prevention and treatment strategies. METHOD We evaluated data from the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Respondents included adults reporting cigarettes or ENDS solo or dual use. Multivariable logistic regression models evaluated associations with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-related risky behavior (i.e., heavy drinking, binge alcohol use, and driving after drinking) compared to never use controls and respondents with a history, but not current, use of cigarettes or ENDS. RESULTS Multivariable models showed greater odds of AUD for respondents with dual ENDS and cigarette use (AOR = 10.2), ENDS use (AOR = 6.27), cigarette use (AOR = 4.45), and a history, but not ongoing, use (AOR = 2.60) relative to respondents with no use history. Similarly, respondents with dual use (AOR = 3.94), ENDS use (AOR = 2.41), and cigarette use (AOR = 1.71) had greater odds of AUD relative to those with a history of, but not ongoing, use. The association between dual use and AUD was greater for adults ages 21-25 (AOR = 16.2) than for adults over 25 (AOR = 7.82). Cigarette and ENDS solo and dual-use were similarly associated with greater odds of alcohol-related risky behavior relative to control groups. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate that nicotine use and dual use may be associated with indicators of problematic drinking. These results offer insight into emerging licit polysubstance profiles and call for mechanistic research to inform prevention and intervention efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased physical fitness, loss of vision and hearing, and increased risk of chronic diseases are significant primary and secondary implications associated with the health of U.S. Military Service members who use tobacco, including electronic cigarettes. Despite the medical and non-medical costs to the U.S. Department of Defense and potential adverse health effects to Service members, electronic cigarette use is on the rise. METHODS U.S. Military Service members who completed their Periodic Health Assessment, a standardized, electronic, logic-based tool, from July 2018 to July 2019 were eligible. This exploratory study examines the prevalence and significant risk factors associated with self-reported use of electronic cigarettes, as well as determines if tobacco use varies by sex and Service branch, through use of Chi-square analysis and logistic regression. RESULTS U.S. Military Service members 17-70 years old were included in this study (N = 1.12 M), with 80% of study participants being male and 20% female. Exposure to secondhand smoke (OR: 2.12, 95% CI: 2.15-2.22) and screening positive for hazardous drinking (OR: 2.70, 95% CI: 2.64-2.76) were found to show the greatest increase in odds of using electronic cigarettes, with similar findings after stratification by sex and Service branch. Stratification by Service branch revealed further differences in the association between electronic cigarette use and various demographic, military, lifestyle, and health characteristics. CONCLUSION Electronic cigarette use is increasing across the United States. U.S. Service members have unique risk factors and patterns of tobacco use. Despite tobacco use having potential adverse effects on military readiness, its use remains prevalent in this population. Our findings identify opportunities for the U.S. Department of Defense to review tobacco policy and availability and accessibility of cessation services to promote quitting tobacco, especially electronic cigarettes.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The purpose of this systematic review study was to determine the national, regional, and global prevalence of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) vaping.
Method
The articles were searched in July 2020 without a time limit in Web of Science (ISI), Scopus, PubMed, and Ovid-MEDLINE. At first, the titles and abstracts of the articles were reviewed, and if they were appropriate, they entered the second stage of screening. In the second stage, the whole articles were reviewed and articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected. In this study, search, selection of studies, qualitative evaluation, and data extraction were performed by two authors independently, and any disagreement between the two authors was reviewed and corrected by a third author.
Results
In this study, the lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping globally were 23% and 11%, respectively. Lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in women were 16% and 8%, respectively. Also, lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in men were 22% and 12%, respectively. In this study, the current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in who had lifetime smoked conventional cigarette was 39%, and in current smokers was 43%. The lifetime prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 24%, 26%, 16%, and 25%, respectively. The current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 10%, 14%, 11%, and 6%, respectively.
Conclusions
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the popularity of e-cigarettes is increasing globally. Therefore, it is necessary for countries to have more control over the consumption and distribution of e-cigarettes, as well as to formulate the laws prohibiting about the e-cigarettes vaping in public places. There is also a need to design and conduct information campaigns to increase community awareness about e-cigarettes vaping.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Use of conventional cigarettes (CIG), alcohol, marijuana, and sedatives [i.e., benzodiazepines and barbiturates]) commonly co-occur with internalizing and externalizing disorders. It is unclear how these relationships extend to electronic cigarettes (ECIGs) and prescription drugs not prescribed (i.e., sedatives, tranquilizers, and painkillers [PDNP]), and whether they differ by gender. METHODS Adult data (N = 30,211) from Wave 1 (2013-2014) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study were used to estimate a network of current or past-month use for six substances, experiencing four internalizing symptoms in the past month, and experiencing seven externalizing symptoms in the past month. Visual comparisons, global strength invariance, network structure invariance, and edge strength invariance were tested to detail substance use and internalizing/externalizing symptom networks. RESULTS Overall, networks were consistent between men and women. The strongest substance use/mental health symptom connections estimated as edge-weights (EW) were between marijuana with lying (EW = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.49; 0.70), marijuana with engaging in fights (EW = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.27; 0.81), PDNP with having trouble sleeping (EW = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.40; 0.66), and alcohol and impulsivity (EW = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.42; 0.53). DISCUSSION There were many weak connections throughout the substance use and internalizing/externalizing network. A few important connections were identified and encourage future study. In particular, PDNP was most strongly associated with internalizing symptoms. Marijuana, alcohol and PDNP use were most strongly associated with externalizing symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Understanding the co-use of e-cigarettes and alcohol, including the situational contexts and subjective effects associated with co-use in real-time is necessary for validating this behavior and informing intervention. Yet, the sparse literature has built upon retrospective data. METHODS This study recruited 686 college students who were currently using e-cigarettes from three campuses in the Midwest and South of U.S in Fall 2019-Fall 2021. An on-line survey was conducted to measure e-cigarette use patterns, GPA, e-cigarette and alcohol dependence symptoms, and respiratory symptoms. A 7-day ecological momentary assessment was used to collect real-time data on e-cigarette and alcohol use, situational contexts and subjective effects. RESULTS Frequent drinking e-cigarette users reported more high-risk use behavior including consuming 6 + drinks/occasion and simultaneous use, and reported more e-cigarettes and alcohol related dependence symptoms and respiratory symptoms, compared to infrequent/non-drinker e-cigarette users. Alcohol quantity was positively associated with e-cigarette quantity among the high frequency drinking group. This study identified important use contexts that were associated with higher e-cigarette consumption including use of menthol or fruit flavored e-cigarettes, being in a car, and the presence of others. E-cigarette use and alcohol use both increased the levels of positive affect, physiological sensation, and craving for e-cigarettes, whereas only alcohol use significantly decreased negative affect. No interaction effects between e-cigarette use and alcohol use were found. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the addiction and health risks associated with frequent co-use of e-cigarettes and alcohol, and also call for regulations on nontobacco flavorings in e-cigarette products.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nicotine and alcohol-containing products are some of the most commonly used substances of abuse and are both leading causes of preventable death. These substances also have significant interactions that have additive and, in some cases, multiplicative effects on the health consequences of their use. Thus, to reduce these negative consequences, it is important to understand the abuse liability of nicotine and alcohol in combination, especially in the most relevant use cases among those who are most vulnerable. Specifically, as tobacco cigarette use is continually decreasing, vaping is quickly replacing cigarettes as the primary mode of nicotine use. This pattern is especially true in adolescent populations in which vaping has grown considerably. Particularly concerning is that adolescents are more vulnerable than adults to the negative consequences of substance use. It is therefore imperative to revisit the literature as it relates to the rising state of co-use of vaping products with alcohol. Here, we review the clinical outcomes of nicotine and alcohol co-use as they relate to the abuse liability of each individually. Special attention is paid to adolescent findings, where available, as well as investigations that use nontobacco nicotine products as these may more accurately reflect the more recent trends of co-use. IMPLICATIONS Though nicotine alone has previously been considered a proxy for tobacco and tobacco cigarette use, combustible routes of administration have been decreasing. They are, instead, being replaced by e-cigarettes that do not involve other tobacco constituents and contain additional nonnicotine constituents of their own. Unfortunately, the literature remains limited with regard to e-cigarettes and their interactions with other substances, especially their prevalent co-use with alcohol. This review attempts to discuss the current literature on nicotine and alcohol co-use in the context of the vaping epidemic, predominantly focusing on addiction-related outcomes and why e-cigarette use may be unique.

Abstract
Objective: To examine the association between vaping and health behaviors (physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, sleep, cigarette use, alcohol consumption) and mental health among college students. Methods: Socio-demographic characteristics, vaping, health behaviors, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms of undergraduates enrolled at a large university located in the Northeast of the United States were assessed via an online survey. Results: Of all participants (n = 1775), less than a fifth (n = 314, 17.7%) reported any vaping in the past month. More men reported vaping than women (23.2% vs. 14.5%). Those who vaped reported fewer nights of restful sleep and greater alcohol consumption. Those who smoked and binge drank were more likely to report vaping. Perceived stress was greater among women who vaped, and depressive symptoms were greater among those who vaped regardless of gender. Conclusions: Vaping was associated with smoking, alcohol consumption, and poorer mental health among young adults.

Abstract
Background: In the U.S., excessive drinking accounts for one in 10 deaths among adults aged 20-64 years old. Binge drinking is a common form of excessive alcohol consumption that contributes to this chilling statistic. Binge drinking is defined as women consuming four or more drinks or men consuming five or more drinks within a 2-h time span. Examining existing data on risk factors for binge drinking can inform strategies to prevent this deadly practice. Methods: The 2019 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset consists of data collected from 11,368 non-institutionalized adults aged 18 years and older with landline or cell phones. The dependent variable in this study was binge drinking status. The independent variables included several sociodemographic variables and risk factors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, single logistic regression, and multivariable logistic regression. Results: In the population, 1,447 (17.4%) were reported to be binge drinkers. Significant factors associated with binge drinking in the final model included sex (aOR = 0.53 (0.45-0.63)), age (18-24 years old aOR = 8.77 (6.02-12.79); 25-34 years old aOR = 7.10 (5.35-9.42); 35-44 years old aOR = 6.23 (4.73-8.19); 45-54 years old aOR = 3.87 (2.92-5.14); and 55-64 years old aOR = 2.58 (1.96-3.38)), income ($15,000-$24,999 aOR = 1.00 (0.63-1.58); $25,000-$34,999 aOR = 1.61 (1.04-2.50); $35,000-$49,999 aOR = 1.69 (1.13-2.55); ≥$50,000 aOR = 1.97 (1.34-2.89)), smokeless tobacco use (aOR = 2.09 (1.55-2.82)), and smoking/e-cigarette use (Cigarette user only aOR = 2.11 (1.69-2.65); E-cigarette user only aOR = 2.67 (1.62-3.17); dual cigarette and e-cigarette user = 3.43 (2.21-5.33)). Conclusion: Developing interventions that take into account elevated risk for binge drinking amongst demographic characteristics (i.e., age, sex, income) and lifestyle factors (i.e., smokeless tobacco use, and smoking/e-cigarette use) is crucial to lowering morbidity and mortality related to this form of excessive alcohol consumption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It remains unclear whether electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use promotes persistent combustible tobacco use or smoking discontinuation over time. Alcohol use is associated with a greater risk of adverse health effects of tobacco, and higher likelihood of e-cigarette use, making drinkers a high-priority subpopulation. AIMS AND METHODS This study examined longitudinal patterns of combustible tobacco and e-cigarette use over 24 months in young adult binge drinkers. A pooled dataset of 1002 (58.5% female; M age = 22.14) binge drinkers from the United States (60%) and Canada (40%) was used. The primary outcomes were past month combustible tobacco and e-cigarette use. Nicotine dependence was measured using the Fagerström Test of Cigarette Dependence. Alcohol severity was measured using the Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire. Latent transition analysis (LTA) was used to identify patterns of cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use over 24 months. RESULTS The LTA yielded a four-class solution: (1) e-cigarettes-only users (prevalence over time: 7.75%-10.10%), (2) dual-product users (2.61%-9.89%), (3) combustible-only smokers (8.12%-20.70%), and (4) nonusers (61.66%-80.06%). Dual-product users predominantly transitioned to complete abstinence or exclusively e-cigarette use. In combustible-only smokers, the most common transition was to abstinence, followed by persistence of combustible-only status. At 24 months, 63% of e-cigarettes-only users transitioned to abstinence, with 37% continuing e-cigarettes-only use and 0% transitioning to dual or combustible cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS Dual-product use in young adult binge drinkers was associated with discontinuation of combustible tobacco over time, and e-cigarette-only use was not associated with subsequent combustible tobacco use. IMPLICATIONS These findings suggest that concurrent or exclusive e-cigarette use is not a risk factor for the persistence or development of combustible tobacco use in this subpopulation, with dual-product use reflecting a transitional pattern away from combustible use, toward discontinuation.

Abstract
Use of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is on the rise. We administered a health needs survey via email to 804 adult primary care and oncology patients at a large urban academic medical center in 2019. We examined differences in e-cigarette use by smoking status, personal history of cancer, alcohol use, and second-hand tobacco smoke exposure. Of the 804 participants, 90 (11.2%) reported ever using e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use was more prevalent in young adults (risk ratio [RR] for 18-24 years: 4.58, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 2.05, 10.26), current smoking (RR 4.64, 95% CI 1.94, 11.07), very often/often binge drinking (RR 3.04, 96% CI 1.38, 6.73), and ≥ 1 smokers in the home (RR 3.90, 95% CI 2.10, 7.23). Binge alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking are associated with increased risk cancer. Inquiries about e-cigarette use among adults 25-40 years present providers the opportunity to also counsel young adult about reducing cancer risk.

Abstract
Background: Young adults' use of alcohol and e-cigarettes are of public health concern, as they report among the highest prevalence for use of both substances. Many young adults use alcohol and e-cigarettes simultaneously (i.e., at the same time with overlapping effects) despite heightened risk for adverse effects. Objectives: This study assessed simultaneous use expectancies and changes in pleasure from e-cigarettes as a function of alcohol consumption and simultaneous use frequency. Participants (N = 408; Mage = 23.64 years; 52.7% female) recruited through Amazon MTurk completed measures of alcohol and e-cigarette use, and expectancies, pleasure and frequency of simultaneous use. Results: Separate linear regression models revealed that alcohol consumption was positively associated with expectancies for simultaneous use of e-cigarettes/alcohol and pleasure from simultaneous use (ps ≤ .015). As individuals engaged in simultaneous use more frequently, they also reported greater expectancies for, and increased pleasure from, simultaneous use (ps < .001). Conclusions/Importance: Expectancies for simultaneous use may be greatest among young adults who consume more alcohol and engage in simultaneous use more frequently. Increased pleasure from e-cigarettes while drinking suggests that positive reinforcement may be implicated in simultaneous use patterns. Future research should examine the role of pleasure in simultaneous use trajectories.

Abstract
Background: The use of electronic cigarettes and cannabis has significantly increased in recent years, which raises public health concerns. There are also concerns about the association of these substances with drinking behaviors. The main objective of the present study is to examine the association of e-cigarettes and/or cannabis use with heavy episodic drinking (HED) among Ontario adults. Methods: The sample consisted of 5,564 adults from the Monitor Survey in 2018 and 2019. Cannabis and e-cigarette use reflected any use of the substances in the past 12 months. HED was defined as consumption of four/five or more drinks on a single occasion at least monthly in the past 12 months. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated from logistic regression models accounting for complex survey design and sociodemographic factors. Results: Overall, the prevalence of HED was 17.5% in 2018 and 2019. Among participants who reported both e-cigarette and cannabis use, about one-half (50.4%) reported HED at least monthly. Adjusting for covariates, the odds of HED were 5.71 (95%CI, 3.92-8.30) times higher among those who reported both e-cigarette and cannabis use compared to those who used neither substance. Conclusions: The use of e-cigarettes and cannabis are significantly associated with heavy episodic drinking among adults, indicating that those who engage in the dual use of e-cigarette and cannabis may be an important group to target with intervention programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined e-cigarette use as a prospective predictor of alcohol and marijuana abuse symptoms in a sample consisting of Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI), Filipino, Asian (i.e., Japanese, Chinese, Korean), and White young adults. NHPI represent a highly vulnerable group with regard to substance use and are severely understudied. METHODS Data were collected from 1463 young adults (M age = 22.2, SD = 3.2; 59.5% women) enrolled across community colleges in Hawai'i at two time-points six months apart. RESULTS Higher frequency of e-cigarette use at baseline was predictive of higher alcohol (B = 0.06, SE = 0.02, p < 0.01) and marijuana (B = 0.06, SE = 0.02, p < 0.01) use problems at six-month follow up, adjusting for baseline cigarette smoking, problem alcohol/marijuana use, sensation seeking, and demographic variables. Ethnicity was found to significantly moderate the relationship between baseline e-cigarette use and problem marijuana use later, such that White and NHPI ethnicities were particularly vulnerable to the effects of e-cigarette use on problem marijuana use. CONCLUSION NHPI are often combined with Asians in national surveys, which obfuscates the higher risks faced by NHPI compared with groups that are routinely classified as Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos). The current research highlights the NHPI's vulnerability in terms of the effects of e-cigarette use on marijuana and alcohol abuse symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have emerged in the Nigerian market, and if used without supervision, may have damaging effects on the physical and mental health of users. Therefore, there is a need to determine the patterns of use, especially among adolescents and young adults. This study aims to assess the prevalence and factors associated with electronic cigarette use, as well as the relationship between their use and anxiety among adolescents and young adults in Lagos, Nigeria. METHOD An online cross-sectional study among participants aged between 15-35 years. The survey had three sections: sociodemographic information, the pattern of e-cigarette use, and a 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with e-cigarette use. P-values <0.05 were considered significant. Statistical analysis was done using STATA-15.0 software. RESULTS Data from a total of 949 respondents was analysed. Participants had a mean age of 23.36 years (±3.97) and were predominantly female (55.64%). The prevalence of e-cigarette ever-use was 7.9% (95% CI: 5.8,10.0). Older age and being male were independently associated with higher odds of e-cigarette use. After adjusting for age and sex, alcohol use (p<0.001), friend's use (p<0.001), and other tobacco product or substance use (p:0.05) remained significantly associated with higher odds of e-cigarette use. There was no association between anxiety levels and e-cigarette use. CONCLUSION These findings suggest a higher likelihood of e-cigarette use among alcohol consumers, poly-tobacco or substance users and individuals with friends who use e-cigarettes. Health providers and policy makers in Nigeria might consider preventive measures aimed at young adults with the identified risk factors, as well as close monitoring of trends in e-cigarette use in the coming years.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Concurrent tobacco/alcohol use is common in adults, and associated with the severity of symptoms experienced by those with mental health disorders. However, few studies have explored this relationship across different combinations of tobacco products [i.e., conventional cigarette (CC) and electronic cigarette (EC)] and alcohol. METHODS Data from the Wave 1 (2013-2014) Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study were used. A total of 15,947 adults aged 18 years or older with complete study information were included. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship between lifetime internalizing/externalizing severity and past 30-day use of tobacco and alcohol, adjusting for nicotine dependence (ND), sex, age, race, education, and income. RESULTS Internalizing severity was more strongly associated with CC and alcohol use (moderate AOR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.22-1.77; high AOR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.03-1.61) as well as alcohol-exclusive use (moderate AOR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.27-1.96; high AOR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.05-1.64) while externalizing severity was more strongly associated with EC and alcohol use (high AOR = 2.97, 95% CI = 1.84-4.81, moderate AOR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.53-3.43) when accounting for ND compared to none. The relationship between externalizing severity with EC use was dependent on alcohol being used with EC. CONCLUSIONS The associations between psychopathology (internalizing vs. externalizing severity) varies by different combinations of alcohol, CC, and EC. Further, these relationships may be mediated through ND. Future investigations into the comorbidity between mental disorder symptoms with tobacco and alcohol use should consider use of specific substances as well as their combination.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although successful smoking cessation after cancer diagnosis is important, research on e-cigarette use and smoking behavior among cancer survivors (CS) is limited. This study compared cigarette and e-cigarette use among CS and non-cancer populations in Korea. METHODS This study analyzed the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey data to investigate e-cigarette use and smoking behavior among Korean CS. The data were categorized into 1260 CS and 5040 non-cancer populations using the propensity score matching method. A multiple logistic regression was conducted among CS who previously used cigarettes or e-cigarettes to evaluate factors influencing successful cessation. RESULTS Regarding conventional smoking, the proportion of ex-smokers was higher (25.2% versus 19.9%) than current smokers (6.7% versus 10.6%) in the CS group than in the propensity matched non-cancer population (PMNCP) (p < 0.001). However, ever use of e-cigarettes did not differ between them (2.4% versus 2.7%, p = 0.529). Successful cessation, defined as not using either cigarettes or e-cigarettes, correlated with problem drinking (OR 0.442, 95% CI 0.207-0.940), depression (OR 0.276, 95% CI 0.087-0.872), and cancer sites. CS of stomach, liver, colorectal, and lung cancer maintained higher successful smoking cessation rates than PMNCP. CONCLUSIONS Korean CS had a higher cessation rate than PMNCP regarding conventional smoking; however, there was no difference in e-cigarette use. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS In Korea, some CS continue to use e-cigarettes, and physicians should focus on helping them quit. Individualized and timely interventions should be provided for both cigarette and e-cigarette users, considering factors influencing successful cessation.

Abstract
Anxiety sensitivity (fear of potential negative consequences of anxiety-related symptoms/sensations) has been identified as a transdiagnostic factor in comorbid pain and nicotine dependence and evidence suggests that anxiety sensitivity may be indirectly associated with nicotine use via greater pain severity. Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that anxiety sensitivity is associated with cigarette and e-cigarette use/co-use directly and indirectly via greater pain severity. Participants included 273 online survey respondents with chronic musculoskeletal pain (34% female; Mage = 32.9). Anxiety sensitivity was positively associated with cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use and cigarette/e-cigarette co-use (ps < .05). Furthermore, anxiety sensitivity was indirectly and positively associated with cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use and co-use via greater chronic pain severity. Pain severity may play an important role in associations between anxiety sensitivity and nicotine dependence and prospective research should examine temporal/causal effects of anxiety sensitivity in relation to pain severity and nicotine/tobacco use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing research shows that the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is associated with a higher rate and quantity of alcohol consumption. METHODS The present study used a 2-session, within-subjects design to experimentally examine the relationship between ENDS use and laboratory ad libitum alcohol consumption. A total of N = 31 (mean age = 28.71, SD = 11.17; 45.2% women; 54.8% White/Caucasian) healthy adults from the community who use ENDS and endorsed liking beer completed the study, which included a beer consumption taste-test task that assessed the volume of beer consumed by the participants across 2 counterbalanced sessions: 1 in which concurrent ENDS use was allowed and 1 in which it was not. All analyses controlled for age, race, and gender. RESULTS The effect of ENDS condition on the volume of beer consumed was not statistically significant, F(1, 30) = 0.03, p = 0.86). Results of linear mixed modeling showed that ENDS puffs were significantly related to alcohol sips (estimate = 0.23, SE = 0.07, p = 0.002) across the ad libitum session. CONCLUSIONS Overall, ENDS use did not increase alcohol consumption; however, the data suggest that ENDS puffs might act as a prime for beer sips or that these 2 behaviors are linked through habit. Future studies should more fully measure and compare global and event-level data on ENDS and alcohol use as they might show disparate patterns of relationships.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Research on combining alcohol and nicotine (ALCNIC) has shown this risky behavior results in significantly more consequences than using either alcohol or nicotine alone. No measures currently exist to assess ALCNIC motives limiting intervention and prevention efforts. The present study developed a psychometrically sound and multidimensional measure of ALCNIC motives (the ANMS). METHODS An initial item pool of ALCNIC items was developed from literature on college student drinking, focus groups, and individual interviews. Study 1 involved students from a northeastern university who completed an online survey on the ALCNIC items (N = 55; 57.1% female; Mage = 20.3). Analysis focused on reliability (exploratory factor analysis). Study 2 involved a cross-validation national sample of college students (N = 336; 49.7% female; Mage = 21.2) completing the same survey items. Confirmatory factor analysis, criterion-related validity (ALCNIC/weekend drinking), and discriminant validity (social desirability) were assessed using structural equation modeling. RESULTS Results across two studies revealed three factors to engage in ALCNIC: antagonistic (party longer), synergistic (enhanced effects), and social (peer pressure); and one factor to avoid ALCNIC: negative effects (feeling anxious) (all alphas > 0.7). In study 2, criterion-related validity revealed that synergistic motives were significantly positively associated with ALCNIC use; and negative effects motives were significantly negatively associated with ALCNIC use. Discriminant validity showed ALCNIC subscales were not significantly associated with social desirability (except social). CONCLUSIONS The study developed a reliable and valid measure of motives for ALCNIC use. Results were robust to cross-validation across two samples of college students. These measures provide targets for intervention and prevention efforts.

Abstract
Background: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has risen dramatically in the United States among young adults; however, little is understood about potential factors that are related to e-cigarette use and maintenance among this population. Fatigue severity is one promising individual difference factor, as past work indicates that it is related to greater withdrawal symptoms and greater dependence on e-cigarettes, and more barriers to quitting. In addition, anxiety sensitivity and severe fatigue are both uniquely related to poor e-cigarette use outcomes; yet, no known studies have examined whether these individual difference factors are related to e-cigarette outcomes among young adults. Method: The current study sought to examine the unique and interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and fatigue severity in predicting a variety of e-cigarette outcomes among 685 (69.1% female; Mage = 19.61 years, SD = 1.44) young adult e-cigarette users. Results: Results indicated that anxiety sensitivity was significantly associated with greater barriers for cessation (β = .63, p <.001) and e-cigarette cravings (β = .67, p =.001), but not dependence. Fatigue severity was significantly associated with greater e-cigarette dependence (β = .58, p <.001), barriers to cessation (β = 1.56, p <.001), and e-cigarette cravings (β = 3.34, p <.001). The interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and fatigue severity did not significantly predict the outcomes. Discussion: Results suggest that anxiety sensitivity and fatigue severity independently predict greater e-cigarette maintenance factors among young adults. The current investigation highlights the importance of targeting anxiety sensitivity and fatigue severity among young adult e-cigarette users.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rate of nicotine metabolism has been identified as a biochemical risk factor for nicotine use and dependence; however, its role in alcohol consumption and related outcomes is not well understood. The current research examined nicotine metabolism rate as a risk factor for alcohol use among current tobacco users. We also examined sex differences in these associations. METHOD Data were taken from Waves 1 and 2 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, a national longitudinal study of tobacco use and associated health outcomes. The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR) was calculated as the ratio of trans-3' hydroxycotinine to cotinine in urine samples provided at wave 1. Alcohol use outcomes included past 30-day NIAAA-defined hazardous drinking status, total drinks, and alcohol-related consequences. All analyses controlled for alcohol use at Wave 1. RESULTS NMR at Wave 1 predicted increased odds of meeting hazardous drinking criteria, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.14, 95 % CI = 1.06; 1.23, p = 0.001, greater total alcohol consumption amount, adjusted rate ratio (aRR) = 1.21, 95 % CI = 1.12; 1.30, p < 0.001, and more alcohol consequences, aRR = 1.07, 95 % CI = 1.01; 1.13, p = 0.018, at wave 2. No significant sex differences were identified. NMR remained a significant predictor of alcohol use in models controlling for severity of nicotine exposure in cigarette smokers. CONCLUSIONS NMR may be a shared risk factor for harmful nicotine and alcohol use that contributes to their co-occurrence.

Abstract
E-cigarette use is increasing among young adult never smokers of conventional cigarettes, but the awareness of the factors associated with e-cigarette use in this population is limited. The goal of this work was to use machine learning (ML) algorithms to determine the factors associated with current e-cigarette use among US young adult never cigarette smokers. Young adult (18-34 years) never cigarette smokers from the 2016 and 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) who reported current or never e-cigarette use were used for the analysis (n = 79,539). Variables associated with current e-cigarette use were selected by two ML algorithms (Boruta and Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)). Odds ratios were calculated to determine the association between e-cigarette use and the variables selected by the ML algorithms, after adjusting for age, gender and race/ethnicity and incorporating the BRFSS complex design. The prevalence of e-cigarette use varied across states. Factors previously reported in the literature, such as age, race/ethnicity, alcohol use, depression, as well as novel factors associated with e-cigarette use, such as disabilities, obesity, history of diabetes and history of arthritis were identified. These results can be used to generate further hypotheses for research, increase public awareness and help provide targeted e-cigarette education.

Abstract
Purpose: This study describes the prevalence trends of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use in young adult cancer survivors and compares these to the prevalence among young adults without a cancer history. It also examines the association between conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, depression, and other sociodemographic factors, and e-cigarette use in young adult cancer survivors. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses, using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016-2018, were done. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the associations between conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, and depression as well as other factors associated with e-cigarette use in young adult cancer survivors. Results: Lifetime e-cigarette use increased from 40.1% in 2016 to 47.4% in 2018. Former smokers were 5.47 times (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.48-8.61) more likely to be lifetime e-cigarette users and 1.9 times (95% CI: 1.12-3.23) more likely to be current e-cigarette users compared to never smokers. Current smokers were over sixteen folds more likely (adjusted odds ratio: 16.50, 95% CI: 11.59-23.57) to be lifetime e-cigarette users and 2.1 times (95% CI: 1.24-3.57) more likely to be current e-cigarette users relative to never smokers. Furthermore, binge drinking and depression were associated with higher odds of lifetime e-cigarette use, while increasing age was associated with lower odds of e-cigarette use. Compared to females, males were significantly more likely to be current users of e-cigarettes relative to former users. Conclusion: Conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, depression, age, and gender were found to be associated with e-cigarette use among young adult cancer survivors. Policies targeted at e-cigarette control among young adult cancer survivors need to be multipronged, simultaneously addressing other harmful practices such as binge drinking and the use of conventional cigarettes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Prior cross-sectional research finds that electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use clusters with higher rates of harmful alcohol consumption in the United States adult population. The current study examined prospectively the association between e-cigarette use, cigarette use and the combined use of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and alcohol use outcomes. DESIGN A nationally representative multi-wave cohort survey (wave 1: September 2013-December 2014, wave 2: October 2014-October 2015). SETTING United States. PARTICIPANTS A representative sample of civilian, non-institutionalized adults who completed waves 1 and 2 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health survey (n = 26 427). MEASUREMENTS Participants were categorized into exposure groups according to their e-cigarette and cigarette use during wave 1. Past 30-day alcohol use outcomes were (1) National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)-defined hazardous alcohol use, (2) total alcohol drinks consumed and (3) alcohol-related consequences. FINDINGS After controlling for socio-demographic risk factors and alcohol use at wave 1, all exposure groups showed higher odds of hazardous alcohol use [adjusted odds ratios (aORs) = 2.05-2.12, all P < 0.001] and reported higher past-month total drinks (B = 0.46-0.70, all P < 0.001) and more alcohol consequences (B = 0.63-0.89, all P ≤ 0.10) at wave 2 compared with non-users. Cigarette users (B = 0.24, P = 0.038) and dual e-cigarette/cigarette users (B = 0.32, P = 0.038) reported higher past-month total drinks compared with e-cigarette users. There was no conclusive evidence that non-daily use of e-cigarettes or cigarettes predicted poorer alcohol use outcomes compared with daily use. CONCLUSIONS In the United States between 2013 and 2015, after adjustment for socio-demographic characteristics, cigarette and e-cigarette use were associated with alcohol use 1 year later.

Abstract
Research suggests that electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use is associated with other substance use in adolescents; however, the magnitude of this association and whether this differs between adolescents and adults is not yet well understood. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify the extent to which ENDS use is associated with alcohol and marijuana use among adolescents and to compare the odds across adolescent samples and a comparison group of adult samples. A comprehensive literature review was conducted examining the relationship between ENDS use and alcohol (adolescent k = 40 from 19 independent studies; adult k = 35 from 12 independent studies) and marijuana (adolescent k = 24 from 14 independent studies; adult k = 6 from 3 independent studies) use. Adolescents who use ENDS had greater odds of reporting co-occurring alcohol use (OR = 4.50, p < .001), particularly binge drinking (OR = 4.51), and marijuana use (OR = 6.04, p < .001) than adolescent who did not use ENDS. Adults who use ENDS were also more likely to use alcohol (OR = 1.57, p < .001) and marijuana (OR = 2.04, p < .001) than those who did not use ENDS. ENDS use was associated with significantly greater odds of alcohol use (log odds ratio; LOR = 0.96 (OR = 2.61), p < .001) and a trend of greater marijuana use (LOR = 0.93 (OR = 2.53), p = 0.08) in adolescents than in adults. Effects were large in adolescents and small in adults. Findings suggest that ENDS use should be assessed in adolescents in both research and clinical settings. Importantly, ENDS use is strongly associated with co-occurring alcohol or marijuana use in adolescents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has become more prevalent among adolescents, there is a growing body of evidence linking e-cigarette use to the initiation of other substances. Whether there is a threshold level of e-cigarette use that is predictive of other substance use is unknown. The current study examines patterns of e-cigarette use over time and determines whether different patterns of early adolescent e-cigarette use are concurrently and prospectively associated with alcohol and marijuana use in late adolescence. METHOD Eight hundred and one adolescents (13-15 years old at baseline recruitment) completed five on-line surveys over a two-year period. Latent class growth analysis was used to model different developmental courses of e-cigarette, alcohol (drinking to intoxication), and marijuana use. Logistic regression was used to test the association between e-cigarette use trajectory patterns and alcohol and marijuana use trajectories. RESULTS Three developmental courses of e-cigarette use were identified: 1) high and increasing, 2) low and increasing, and 3) never. Compared to adolescents who had never used e-cigarettes, those in the other two groups were more likely to have been intoxicated and to be in the moderate and increasing marijuana use group. CONCLUSION Both high and low levels of e-cigarette use patterns are associated with increasing use of other substances (alcohol and marijuana use) over time. Findings highlight the need for early intervention and prevention of e-cigarette use among adolescents.
