Abstract
Perimenstrual attacks have been reported in up to 15% of patients with FMF, suggesting that menstruation may be a trigger for FMF attacks. The aim of this study was to investigate menstrual period patterns and dysmenorrhea in adolescents with FMF in comparison to their healthy peers. This cross-sectional case-control study included 73 FMF patients and 70 age- and body mass index-matched controls. A structured questionnaire was designed to assess menstrual history, the frequency and severity of dysmenorrhea, symptoms related to dysmenorrhea, and the clinical features of FMF attacks. Dysmenorrhea was present in 90.4% of patients and 95.7% of controls (p = 0.32). Pain was reported during every cycle or every two cycles by 83.3% of patients versus 65.6% of controls (p = 0.02). Fever (27.4% vs. 10.3%, p = 0.01) was significantly more frequent in patients, while musculoskeletal symptoms (46.6% vs. 66.2%, p = 0.02), fatigue (53.4% vs. 83.8%, p < 0.001), and sleep disturbances (19.2% vs. 50.7%, p < 0.001) were more common in controls. Notably, FMF patients reported heavier bleeding episodes with higher number of sanitary pads used during menstruation (p = 0.001). Menstruation-associated FMF attacks were reported by 37% of patients, with 14.8% experiencing them every cycle. Exon 10 variants were present in 86.3% of cases, with 23.3% being homozygous. The frequency and character of dysmenorrhea did not differ significantly according to genetic profiles. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to investigate menstrual patterns and dysmenorrhea symptoms in adolescent FMF patients compared to their healthy peers. Dysmenorrhea is prevalent in FMF patients with distinct menstrual characteristics, including more frequent fever and heavier bleeding. WHAT IS KNOWN • Menstruation may trigger Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) attacks in a subset of patients, but the relationship between FMF and dysmenorrhea remains unclear. • Some studies suggest that inflammation associated with FMF could contribute to menstrual pain and abnormalities, but comprehensive data in adolescents are limited. WHAT IS NEW • This study is the first to compare menstrual patterns and dysmenorrhea characteristics between adolescent FMF patients and healthy controls, highlighting distinct menstrual symptoms in FMF patients. • FMF patients experience more frequent febrile episodes and heavier menstrual bleeding compared to their healthy peers, but dysmenorrhea characteristics are not influenced by specific MEFV gene mutations.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between tinnitus and menstrual cycle disorders in premenopausal women. A total of 558 participants completed a comprehensive questionnaire covering demographics, tinnitus, and gynecological/obstetric history. The analysis investigated the correlation between tinnitus and various menstrual disorders, including dysmenorrhea (primary, secondary, or premenstrual syndrome), as well as different menstrual cycle patterns (regular, hypomenorrhea, menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea, or polymenorrhea). Among the participants, 33% reported experiencing tinnitus, with 74.4% experiencing dysmenorrhea. The most prevalent pathological menstrual pattern was menorrhagia (20%), followed by hypomenorrhea (11.11%). The results revealed a significant increase in tinnitus among premenopausal women with secondary dysmenorrhea (p value < 0.001) or menorrhagia (p value < 0.002) compared with those without tinnitus. Adjustment for confounding variables such as age, income, and psychological health problems did not alter the significant correlations between tinnitus and secondary dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia. Further research is needed to elucidate the nature of this relationship and its underlying mechanisms. Both tinnitus and menstrual disorders can have substantial impacts on the well-being of affected women, and a deeper understanding of these issues could pave the way for improvements in their health care.

Abstract
The mechanism underlying the co-occurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and gynecological diseases remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the familial co-aggregation and shared genetic loading between MDD and gynecological diseases, namely dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, uterine leiomyomas (UL), and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Overall, 2,121,632 females born 1970-1999 with parental information were enrolled from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD); 25,142 same-sex twins and 951,779 persons with full-sibling(s) were selected. Genome-wide genotyping data were available for 67,882 unrelated female participants from the Taiwan Biobank linked to the NHIRD. A generalized linear model with a logistic link function was used to examine the associations of individual history, family history in parents/full-siblings/same-sex twins, and polygenic risk scores (PRS) for MDD with the risk of gynecological diseases; generalized estimating equations were used to consider the non-independence of data. Both parents affected with MDD was associated with four gynecological diseases, and its magnitude of association was higher than either affected parent; maternal MDD showed a higher magnitude of association than paternal MDD. Full-siblings of patients with MDD had a higher risk of four gynecological diseases; same-sex twins of patients with MDD had a greater association with dysmenorrhea and PCOS. PRS for MDD was associated with dysmenorrhea and endometriosis. Familial co-aggregation was observed in the co-occurrence of MDD and four gynecological diseases. There exists a shared polygenic liability between MDD and dysmenorrhea and endometriosis. Individuals with MDD-affected relatives or a higher PRS for MDD should be monitored for gynecological diseases.

Abstract
Introduction: The menstrual cycle is an important indicator of health in female athletes. Female elite adolescent dancers are expected to control their weight while also training intensely, which can lead to menstrual disorders. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between body composition and menstrual status in female elite adolescent dancers. Methods: In total, 131 female elite adolescent dancers (age: 15.9 ± 1.5 years) were enrolled in this study. We measured the height, weight, and body fat percentage (BFP) for each participant and calculated their body mass index (BMI). We gathered information on individual menstruation patterns and the participants' menstrual cycles over the previous year using recall methods. We then compared the differences between dancers with menstrual cycle disorders and those without. Primary amenorrhea was defined as menarche occurring after the age of 15, while secondary amenorrhe was defined as experiencing fewer than 5 or no menstrual periods for at least 3 of the previous 12 months. We conducted a reliability test using the same questionnaire 2 weeks later. Statistical significance was defined as P < .05, and we calculated the effect sizes (d) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: The average BMI and BFP were 22.6 ± 3.0% and 19.4 ± 2.2 kg/m2, respectively. Low BFP and low BMI were observed in 51 (38.6%) and 47 (35.6%) participants, respectively. Primary amenorrhea in 3 participants (2.3%) and 29 (22.1%) reported experiencing secondary amenorrhea; they had lower BFP than the dancers who did not experience amenorrhea (P = .041, 95% CI, -2.51 to -0.05). Conclusion: Female elite adolescent dancers in China may have lower BFP and menstrual problems. Given that lower BFP may contribute to the occurrence of menstruation disorders, it is essential to pay an attention to both BFP and the menstruation status in female elite adolescent dancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the effect of physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and levels of prostaglandins (PGF2α) urine on the occurrence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents. METHODS A total of 128 female students included in the study. The study was conducted from January to March 2023 using a cross-sectional design. This study utilized the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ) and gynecological examination with ultrasonography. The urinary prostaglandin (PGF2α) was measured using the enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression test. RESULTS The age range of the participants included in the study was 14-17, with a mean age of 15.85 ± 0.65. There was an correlation between physical activity, BMI, and urinary prostaglandin (PGF2α) levels with the incidence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, it revealed that underweight, and had a high urinary prostaglandin significant correlated to primary dysmenorrhea with odds ratio 4.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.98-11.54) and 4.88 (95% CI 1.98-12.08), respectively. High physical activity and overweight was not associated with incidence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents. CONCLUSION This study provides valuable insights into the correlation between physical activity, BMI, and levels of prostaglandins (PGF2α) in urine. A high level of urinary prostaglandin was found to be the most influential factor in the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents. By addressing factors associated with dysmenorrhea in adolescents, healthcare professionals can potentially enhance well-being by reducing menstrual pain and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to prevent dysmenorrhea.

Abstract
RESEARCH QUESTION What is the contribution of sociodemographic, psychosocial, lifestyle and reproductive factors up to the age of 11-12 years to the occurrence of dysmenorrhoea at age 15-16 years within the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) study? DESIGN Data of 1038 female adolescents were used. Participants' baseline characteristics were obtained using self-reported questionnaires up to the age of 11-12 years, as well as the obstetric information of their mothers during pregnancy. Dysmenorrhoea was assessed at the age of 15-16 years, and was deemed to be present if an adolescent reported menstrual abdominal and/or back pain and therefore took medication and/or hormonal contraception. Using a backward selection approach, potential determinants of dysmenorrhoea were selected and multivariable associations were determined. RESULTS The overall prevalence of dysmenorrhoea was 49.5% among the participants. Intake of 3-4.5 sugar-sweetened beverages/day (P = 0.035) and higher gynaecological age (i.e. years since menarche) (P < 0.001) were significantly associated with higher occurrence of dysmenorrhoea in the final model, which explained 8.1% of the total variance in the occurrence of dysmenorrhoea. No significant associations were found between the occurrence of dysmenorrhoea and sociodemographic or psychosocial factors. CONCLUSIONS This investigation of various potential risk factors for dysmenorrhoea suggests that diet and reproductive factors are particularly important predictors of the occurrence of dysmenorrhoea among young adolescents. Specifically, intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and higher gynaecological age were predictive of the occurrence of dysmenorrhoea. Other lifestyle factors were also identified as possible risk factors. Using this knowledge, effective strategies can be developed to reduce the burden of dysmenorrhoea among adolescents, and to provide appropriate care for those suffering from the condition.

Abstract
Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression in the female reproductive tract explains the regulatory role of vitamin D on inflammatory cytokine and prostaglandin (PGD) synthesis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D on adolescents' primary dysmenorrhea and the relationship between Vit. D and adolescents' primary dysmenorrhea. Eighty-five adolescents were included in the current study. After a detailed evaluation, pelvic sonography was performed for all participants to rule out any pelvic pathology. Blood samples were collected to measure thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), prolactin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D). Participants were administered vitamin D (50,000 IU weekly for five months), and their dysmenorrhea symptoms were evaluated before and after this period using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Verbal Multidimensional Scoring (VMS). The mean VAS and VMS scores of dysmenorrhea statistically decreased from 8.7±0.91 and 2.65±0.93 to 4.8±0.75 and 0.80±0.75, respectively, after vitamin D intake (p=0.03 and 0.025, respectively). Significant negative associations between 25(OH)D and VAS (R = -0.886; p<0.00001) and VMS of dysmenorrhea (R = -0.885; p<0.00001) were detected in this study. Vit. D could be a useful therapeutic option to reduce the severity of primary dysmenorrhea and could limit the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract
Primary dysmenorrhea is the most commonly encountered menstrual issue among adolescents, often leading to significant school absenteeism. This study aimed to detect the impact of primary dysmenorrhea on adolescents' activities and school attendance. We conducted a cross-sectional comparative study involving 180 adolescents aged 12 to 18 who experienced primary dysmenorrhea. A comprehensive trans-abdominal pelvic sonography was performed to rule out any underlying pelvic conditions. The severity of dysmenorrhea was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS), categorizing adolescents into groups with mild dysmenorrhea (VAS ≥1 to ≤3), moderate dysmenorrhea (VAS >3 to ≤7), and severe dysmenorrhea (VAS >7 to ≤10). Adolescents were surveyed to determine whether the severity of dysmenorrhea had an adverse effect on their physical and social activities as well as their school attendance. We used one-way ANOVA to compare the groups. There was a significant positive relation between the severity of dysmenorrhea and its negative impact on adolescents' physical activities (r=0.395; p<0.00001) and social activities (r=0.658; p<0.00001). Additionally, there was a significant positive relation between the severity of dysmenorrhea and its negative impact on adolescents' school attendance (r=0.416; p<0.00001). The odds of a negative impact on adolescents' physical and social activities and school attendance were significantly higher in adolescents experiencing moderate and severe dysmenorrhea than in adolescents with mild dysmenorrhea.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim was to assess the relation between primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents and body mass index (BMI). MATERIAL AND METHODS Two-hundred and ten adolescents were recruited for this cross-sectional research. After detailed evaluation, pelvic sonography was performed for the studied adolescents to rule out any pelvic abnormalities and/or lesion(s). The severity of the studied adolescents' dysmenorrhea was assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS). The studied adolescents were divided into underweight, normal-weight, overweight, and obese adolescent groups based on their BMI (kg/m2). Collected data were analyzed using the ANOVA test, and correlation analysis (Pearson's correlation) to assess the relation between primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents and BMI. RESULTS The visual analogue scale of dysmenorrhea was statistically higher in the underweight adolescent group (8.7 ±0.8) compared to normal-weight (6.5 ±0.5) (p = 0.000001), and overweight (6.3 ±0.6) (p = 0.000001) adolescent groups. The visual analogue scale of dysmenorrhea was also statistically higher in the obese adolescent group (9.4 ±0.6) compared to underweight (8.7 ±0.8) (p = 0.000001), normal-weight (6.5 ±0.5) (p = 0.000001), and overweight (6.3 ±0.6) (p = 0.000001) adolescent groups. CONCLUSIONS The visual analogue scale of dysmenorrhea was statistically higher in the underweight adolescent group compared to normal-weight, and overweight adolescent groups, and there was a strong negative relation between the VAS and BMI in the underweight adolescent group. In addition, the VAS of dysmenorrhea was statistically higher when the obese adolescent group was compared with the overweight, normal-weight and underweight adolescent groups, and there was a moderate positive relation between the VAS and BMI in the obese adolescent group.
