Abstract
The global pandemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has resulted in millions of deaths over the past three years. As one of the most commonly affected extra-pulmonary organs, numerous studies have reported varying degrees of liver injury in a significant proportion of patients with COVID-19, particularly in severe and critically ill patients. Early prediction of liver dysfunction in hospitalized patients would facilitate the clinical management of COVID-19 and improve clinical prognosis, but reliable and valid predictive models are still lacking.MethodsWe collected data from 286 patients with RT-PCR confirmed COVID-19 admitted to various ICUs from the case system. These patients were randomly divided into a training cohort (50%) and a validation cohort (50%). In the training cohort, we first used ROC curves to measure the predictive efficiency of each of the variables for the development of liver damage during hospitalization in patients with COVID-19, followed by LASSO regression analysis to screen the variables for predictive models and logistic regression analysis to identify relevant risk factors. A nomogram based on these variables was created following the above model. Finally, the efficiency of the prediction models in the training and validation cohorts was assessed using AUC, consistency index (C index), calibration curves and Decision Curve Analysis.ResultsOut of a total of 80 parameters for COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICUs, 10 were determined to be significantly associated with the occurrence of liver dysfunction during hospitalization. Based on these predictors, further prediction models were used to construct and develop a nomogram that was offered for practical clinical application. The C-index of the column line graphs for the training and validation cohorts was 0.956 and 0.844 respectively. in addition, the calibration curves for the model showed a high degree of agreement between the predicted and actual incidence of liver dysfunction in patients with COVID-19.ConclusionBy developing a predictive model and associated nomogram, we predicted the incidence of liver dysfunction during hospitalization in patients with COVID-19 in the ICU. The model's predictive performance was determined in both the training and validation cohorts, contributing to the clinical management of COVID-19.

Abstract
Purpose Peripheral blood lymphocyte counts is a pivotal parameter in assessing the host's immune response during maladies and the equilibrium of the immune system which has been found to correlate with various diseases progression and prognosis. However, there was no study on patients with peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP). We sought to investigate the prognostic value of baseline peripheral blood lymphocyte count in PDAP patients. Patients and methods This retrospective study analyzed data from 286 PDAP patients over nine years. Episodes were categorized according to the tertiles of peripheral blood lymphocyte counts (Very Low Lymphocyte Count (VLLC) Group, <0.72×106/L; Low Lymphocyte Count (LLC) Group, 0.72-1.11×106/L; Normal Lymphocyte Count (NLC) Group, ≥ 1.11×106/L). Demographic, laboratory, and infection-related variables were analyzed. Cox regression and generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were used to estimate the association between lymphocyte counts and PDAP treatment failure, which included PD catheter removal and death. Results After adjusting for other potential predictors, decreased lymphocyte counts exhibited an incremental relationship with the risk of treatment failure. The VLLC group indicated a 270% (95% CI, 1.168-6.247, P=0.020) and 273% (95% CI, 1.028-7.269, P=0.044) increased venture of treatment failure in Cox regression and GEE analyses, respectively, compared with the NLC group. As a continuous variable, the restricted cubic spline showed a linear negative correlation between lymphocyte counts and the treatment failure risk (P for overall = 0.026). The multivariate model C (combined lymphocyte count with baseline age, sex, dialysis age, Charlson Comorbidity index (CCI), etiology of kidney failure, hemoglobin, albumin, total bilirubin and infection type) showed an area under the curve of 0.824 (95% CI, 0.767-0.881, P=0.001) for the prediction of treatment failure. Conclusion Lower lymphocyte counts are linked to increased PDAP treatment failure risk. This highlights lymphocyte count's potential as a prognostic indicator for PDAP.

Abstract
Liver is unlikely the key organ driving mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) however, liver function tests (LFTs) abnormalities are widely observed mostly in moderate and severe cases. According to this review, the overall prevalence of abnormal LFTs in COVID-19 patients ranges from 2.5% to 96.8% worldwide. The geographical variability in the prevalence of underlying diseases is the determinant for the observed discrepancies between East and West. Multifactorial mechanisms are implicated in COVID-19-induced liver injury. Among them, hypercytokinemia with "bystander hepatitis", cytokine storm syndrome with subsequent oxidative stress and endotheliopathy, hypercoagulable state and immuno-thromboinflammation are the most determinant mechanisms leading to tissue injury. Liver hypoxia may also contribute under specific conditions, while direct hepatocyte injury is an emerging mechanism. Except for initially observed severe acute respiratory distress syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) tropism for cholangiocytes, more recent cumulative data show SARS-CoV-2 virions within hepatocytes and sinusoidal endothelial cells using electron microscopy (EM). The best evidence for hepatocellular invasion by the virus is the identification of replicating SARS-CoV-2 RNA, S protein RNA and viral nucleocapsid protein within hepatocytes using in-situ hybridization and immunostaining with observed intrahepatic presence of SARS-CoV-2 by EM and by in-situ hybridization. New data mostly derived from imaging findings indicate possible long-term sequelae for the liver months after recovery, suggesting a post-COVID-19 persistent live injury.

Abstract
Background The current 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is a major threat to global health. It is currently uncertain whether and how liver injury affects the severity of COVID-19. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the association between liver injury and the severity of COVID-19. Methods A systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to August 12, 2022, was performed to analyse the reported liver chemistry data for patients diagnosed with COVID-19. The pooled odds ratio (OR), weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were assessed using a random-effects model. Furthermore, publication bias and sensitivity were analyzed. Results Forty-six studies with 28,663 patients were included. The pooled WMDs of alanine aminotransferase (WMD = 12.87 U/L, 95% CI: 10.52-15.23, I 2 = 99.2%), aspartate aminotransferase (WMD = 13.98 U/L, 95% CI: 12.13-15.83, I 2 = 98.2%), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (WMD = 20.67 U/L, 95% CI: 14.24-27.10, I 2 = 98.8%), total bilirubin (WMD = 2.98 μmol/L, 95% CI: 1.98-3.99, I 2 = 99.4%), and prothrombin time (WMD = 0.84 s, 95% CI: 0.46-1.23, I 2 = 99.4%) were significantly higher and that of albumin was lower (WMD = -4.52 g/L, 95% CI: -6.28 to -2.75, I 2 = 99.9%) in severe cases. Moreover, the pooled OR of mortality was higher in patients with liver injury (OR = 2.72, 95% CI: 1.18-6.27, I 2 = 71.6%). Conclusions Hepatocellular injury, liver metabolic, and synthetic function abnormality were observed in severe COVID-19. From a clinical perspective, liver injury has potential as a prognostic biomarker for screening severely affected patients at early disease stages. Abstract
The new coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in December 2019, in Wuhan, China. The virus was rapidly spread worldwide, causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although COVID-19 is presented, usually, with typical respiratory symptoms (i.e., dyspnea, cough) and fever, extrapulmonary manifestations are also encountered. Liver injury is a common feature in patients with COVID-19 and ranges from mild and temporary elevation of liver enzymes to severe liver injury and, even, acute liver failure. The pathogenesis of liver damage is not clearly defined; multiple mechanisms contribute to liver disorder, including direct cytopathic viral effect, cytokine storm and immune-mediated hepatitis, hypoxic injury, and drug-induced liver toxicity. Patients with underlying chronic liver disease (i.e., cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, etc.) may have greater risk to develop both severe COVID-19 and further liver deterioration, and, as a consequence, certain issues should be considered during disease management. The aim of this review is to present the prevalence, clinical manifestation and pathophysiological mechanisms of liver injury in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, we overview the association between chronic liver disease and SARS-CoV-2 infection and we briefly discuss the management of liver injury during COVID-19.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus affects different age groups, and it is popularly managed using synthetic drugs; however, recent research efforts focus on dietary intervention especially the use of fiber rich crops to circumvent the effects of drugs. Developed shallot-enriched amaranth-based extruded snacks, namely: GCB, Amaranth: shallot: soy cake (55:25:20) %; TYD, Amaranth: shallot: soy cake (75:14.81:10.19)%; DZU, Amaranth: shallot: soy cake (60.43:25:14.57)%; and JKL, Amaranth: shallot: soy cake (70:25:5)%, were evaluated for proximate composition, total phenol and flavonoid contents. Snacks ability to modulate carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats were also investigated. AMT (100% amaranth grain extrudate) and CCS (commercial shallot-enriched snack) served as control. Protein contents of snacks provided up to 25% of daily protein requirements for adult. Snacks exhibited high total phenol and flavonoid contents. Animals fed with snacks showed ameliorative effects on hematological parameters, attenuates elevation of enzyme activities in kidney and liver homogenates, and displayed decreased α-glucosidase/α-amylase activities. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Dietary intervention is capable of circumventing the adverse effects of synthetic drugs in the management of diabetes mellitus. The study established that developed shallot-enriched amaranth-based extruded snacks possess significant ability to hamper the activities of key carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, hence, has potential as a functional nutritious snack to curtail hyperglycemia and prevent diabetic complications.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly spread across the globe since December 2019. The spectrum of clinical manifestations of COVID-19 ranges from mild to life-threatening forms. Alteration of hepatic function in COVID-19 is multifactorial. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the relationship between severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced hepatic dysfunction and the clinical outcome in patients infected with COVID-19. We methodically explored several electronic databases (PubMed, PubMed Central, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar) in April 2022 using focused words and terms of medical subject headings for appropriate studies. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for conducting our systematic review. Hepatic dysfunction was identified as elevation of liver function tests (LFTs) above the upper limit of normal. The clinical outcome was described as a combination of mortality, intensive care unit (ICU) transfer, and the need for mechanical ventilation (MV). The initial search yielded a total of 7187 studies. After elimination of duplicates, exclusion of studies based on irrelevant titles and abstracts, comprehensive analysis of full-text formats, and evaluation of quality, a total of 16 studies were eligible to be included in our systematic review. In the 16 selected studies, there were 23,962 patients. The SARS-CoV-2 virus can negatively affect several organ systems by interacting with specific receptors widely expressed in the human body. A multifactorial etiology of hepatic dysfunction is observed in COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with abnormal LFTs. Significantly higher mortality, ICU admissions, and requirement for MV are associated with LFT alterations. For this reason, patients infected with COVID-19 must have their hepatic function closely monitored.

Abstract
Pandemics obligate providers to transform their clinical practice. An extensive effort has been put to find out feasible approaches for gastrointestinal diseases and also to manage coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related gastrointestinal conditions. Diarrhea, hepatitis, and pancreatitis can be seen in the COVID-19 course. Endoscopic procedures increase the risk of contamination for medical staff and patients despite precautions, therefore indications should be tailored to balance risks vs benefits. Furthermore, whether the immunosupression in inflammatory bowel diseases, liver transplantation, and autoimmune liver diseases increases COVID-19 related risks and how to modify immunosupression are topics of ongoing debate. This review aims to provide most up to date practical approaches that a gastrointestinal fellow should be aware on the problems and management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Introduction The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused over four million deaths, depleting resources and healthcare workers; therefore, in an attempt to stratify patients, the relationship between liver enzymes and clinical outcome was studied. This study aimed to assess the pattern and impact of liver enzymes on the clinical outcome of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Lebanon and look for possible confounding factors. Methodology This was a single-centered retrospective cohort study conducted between December 2020 and March 2021 on 230 patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Liver function tests (LFTs) and other laboratory values on admission and peak hospitalization were analyzed using SPSS. Results The prevalence of abnormal liver tests among the sample population with severe COVID-19 infection were as follows: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), 77%; alanine aminotransferase (ALT), 49%; alkaline phosphatase (ALP), 12%; and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), 37%. A severe COVID-19 infection was more likely present in patients with abnormal levels of AST (p = 0.015), ALP (p = 0.03), and GGT (p = 0.022). ANOVA test revealed no significant relationship between AST levels at peak hospitalization and the treatments received by the patient. Conclusion Abnormal liver function tests of patients at admission may be an indicator of more severe disease. In the context of scarce resources created by the pandemic, it becomes essential to establish a reliable predictor for a severe outcome of COVID-19 infection and manage accordingly.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES In many studies, varying degrees of liver damage have been reported in more than half of the COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of liver biochemical parameters abnormality on mortality in critical COVID-19 patients who have been followed in the ICU since the beginning of the pandemic process. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study 533 critical patients who admitted to the ICU due to COVID-19 were included. The patients were divided into three groups according to their ALT, AST, and total bilirubin levels at their admission to the ICU. Group 1 was formed of patients with normal liver biochemical parameters values; Group 2 was formed of patients with liver biochemical parameters abnormality; Group 3 was formed of patients with liver injury. RESULTS 353 (66.2%) of all patients died. Neutrophil, aPTT, CRP, LDH, CK, ALT, AST, bilirubin, procalcitonin and ferritin values in Group 2 and Group 3 were found to be statistically significantly higher than Group 1. It was detected that the days of stay in ICU of the patients in Group 1 was statistically significantly longer than others group. It was found that the patients in Groups 2 and 3 had higher total, 7-day, and 28-day mortality rates than expected. CONCLUSIONS The study showed that liver disfunction was associated with higher mortality and shorter ICU occupation time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) is associated with hepatocellular liver injury of uncertain significance. We aimed to determine whether development of significant liver injury during hospitalization is related to concomitant medications or processes common in COVID-19 (eg, ischemia, hyperinflammatory, or hypercoagulable states), and whether it can result in liver failure and death. METHODS There were 834 consecutive patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who were included. Clinical, medication, and laboratory data were obtained at admission and throughout hospitalization using an identified database. Significant liver injury was defined as an aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level 5 or more times the upper limit of normal; ischemia was defined as vasopressor use for a minimum of 2 consecutive days; hyperinflammatory state was defined as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein value of 100 mg/L or more, and hypercoagulability was defined as D-dimer 5 mg/L or more at any time during hospitalization. RESULTS A total of 105 (12.6%) patients developed significant liver injury. Compared with patients without significant liver injury, ischemia (odds ratio [OR], 4.3; range, 2.5-7.4; P < .0001) and tocilizumab use (OR, 3.6; range, 1.9-7.0; P = .0001) were independent predictors of significant liver injury. Although AST correlated closely with alanine aminotransferase (R = 0.89) throughout hospitalization, AST did not correlate with the international normalized ratio (R = 0.10) or with bilirubin level (R = 0.09). Death during hospitalization occurred in 136 (16.3%) patients. Multivariate logistic regression showed that significant liver injury was not associated with death (OR, 1.4; range, 0.8-2.6; P = .2), while ischemic (OR, 2.4; range, 1.4-4.0; P = .001), hypercoagulable (OR, 1.7; range, 1.1-2.6; P = .02), and hyperinflammatory (OR, 1.9; range, 1.2-3.1; P = .02) disease states were significant predictors of death. CONCLUSIONS Liver test abnormalities known to be associated with COVID-19 are secondary to other insults, mostly ischemia or drug-induced liver injury, and do not lead to liver insufficiency or death.

Abstract
Data on the impact of lymphocytes and neutrophils on the incidence of liver dysfunction in COVID-19 patients are limited. This study aimed to investigate the lateral and longitudinal associations of lymphocyte ratio (LR) and neutrophil ratio (NR) on liver dysfunction in COVID-19 patients. We tested 1,409 blood samples from 245 COVID-19 patients in China between January 2020 and June 2021. The lateral U-shaped relationships, determined by smooth curve fitting and the piecewise-linear mixed-effect model, were observed between LR, NR, and AST and the incidence of AST-linked liver dysfunction, with the threshold cutoffs of 26.1 and 62.0, respectively. Over the 1,409 tests, the LR ≤ 26.1 and NR ≥ 62.0 related to the occurrence of mild liver dysfunction (HR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.82), moderate liver dysfunction (HR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.85), and severe liver dysfunction (HR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.02, 2.90). For the patients with preexisting AST ≥ 35 U/L, the baseline LR ≤ 26.1 and NR ≥ 62.0 (b.LLCHN) groups had a fully adjusted 8.85-, 7.88-, and 5.97-fold increased risk of mild and moderate liver dysfunction after being hospitalized of 3, 6, and 9 days compared to the baseline LR > 26.1 and NR < 62.0 (b.normal) groups. Severe liver dysfunction only presents significant differences after being adjusted for age, sex, and BMI. Consistently, Kaplan-Meier analyses showed that b.LLCHN reflects a better predictive value for different subsequent magnitude liver dysfunctions after admission of 3 and 6 days. To improve liver function in patients with preexisting AST ≥35 U/L, future management strategies should pay more attention to baseline LR ≤ 26.1 and NR ≥ 62.0 patients.

Abstract
Since the first report of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, the outbreak of the disease is currently continuously evolving. Previous studies have shown varying degrees of liver damage in patients with COVID-19. However, the exact causes of liver injury and the relationship between COVID-19 and liver injury is unclear. This article describes liver injury induced by COVID-19, analyzes its causes, and discusses the treatment and prognosis of liver damage in patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Globally, millions of persons have contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) over the past several months, resulting in significant mortality. Health care systems are negatively impacted including the care of individuals with cancers and other chronic diseases such as chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. There are various probable pathogenic mechanisms that have been presented to account for liver injury in COVID-19 patients such as hepatotoxicity cause by therapeutic drugs, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection of the bile duct cells and hepatocytes, hypoxia and systemic inflammatory response. Liver biochemistry tests such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are deranged in COVID-19 patients with liver injury. Hepatocellular damage results in the elevation of serum AST and ALT levels in early onset disease while a cholestatic pattern that develops as the disease progress causes higher levels of ALP, GGT, direct and total bilirubin. These liver biochemistry tests are prognostic markers of disease severity and should be carefully monitored in COVID-19 patients. We conducted a systematic review of abnormal liver biochemistry tests in COVID-19 and the possible pathogenesis involved. Significant findings regarding the severity, hepatocellular pattern, incidence and related clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients are highlighted.

Abstract
Background and Aim: The impact of liver function test (LFTs) abnormality on adverse clinical outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of abnormal LFTs on clinical outcomes in a large cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: We retrospectively collected data on 2,912 consecutive patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to a makeshift hospital in China between 5 February and 23 March 2020. The association between LFTs abnormalities (baseline and peak values) and clinical outcomes was measured by using Cox regression models. Results: On admission 1,414 patients (48.6%) had abnormal LFTs, with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) elevation in 662 (22.7%), 221 (7.6%), 52 (1.8%), 135 (4.6%), and 536 (18.5%) patients, respectively, and hypoalbuminemia in 737 (25.3%) patients. During a median 13 (IQR: 8-19) days of hospitalization, 61 patients (2.1%) died, 106 patients (3.6%) admitted to intensive care unit (ICU), and 75 patients (2.6%) required mechanical ventilation. After adjustment for confounders, baseline abnormal LFTs were independently associated with increased risks of mortality (adjusted HR 3.66, 95%CI 1.64-8.19, p = 0.002), ICU admission (adjusted HR 3.12 95%CI 1.86-5.23, p < 0.001), and mechanical ventilation (adjusted HR 3.00, 95%CI 1.63-5.52, p < 0.001), which was homogeneous across the severity of COVID-19 infection. Among the parameters of LTFs, the associations with the outcomes were more pronounced for AST and albumin abnormality. In contrast, ALT elevation was not significantly associated with those outcomes. Similar results were observed for peak values of LFTs during hospitalization. Conclusions: Abnormality of AST, albumin, TBIL, ALP, and GGT but not ALT were independently associated with adverse outcomes.

Abstract
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) has been reported developing commonly in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) patients and could increase the risk of poor outcomes in these patients. We design this study to explore the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) on predicting AKI and construct risk score for predicting AKI in COVID‐19 patients. Methods Patients diagnosed with COVID‐19 and hospitalized in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University between January 30 and February 24, 2020, were included. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was performed to identify the strongest predictors of AKI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to find independent risk factors for AKI and construct risk score using odds ratio (OR) value of those risk factors. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were plotted, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) value was calculated to evaluate the predictive value of single PCT level and the constructed risk score. Results Among 389 included COVID‐19 patients, 28 (7.2%) patients developed AKI. LASSO regression showed hypertension, saturation of arterial oxygen (SaO2), PCT, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were the strongest predictors for AKI. After multivariate logistic regression analysis, only SaO2 (<0.001), PCT (p = 0.004), and BUN (p = 0.005) were independently associated with development of AKI in COVID‐19 patients. The AUC of single PCT and constructed risk score was 0. 881 and 0.928, respectively. Conclusion PCT level is correlated with AKI in COVID‐19 patients. The efficient risk score consisted of SaO2, PCT, and BUN is readily accessible for physicians to evaluate the possibility of AKI in COVID‐19 patients.

Abstract
With the rapid development of research on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), more and more attention has been drawn to its damage to extrapulmonary organs. There are increasing lines of evidence showing that liver injury is closely related to the severity of COVID-19, which may have an adverse impact on the progression and prognosis of the patients. What is more, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection, cytokine storm, ischemia/hypoxia reperfusion injury, aggravation of the primary liver disease and drug-induced liver injury may all contribute to the hepatic damage in COVID-19 patients; although, the drug-induced liver injury, especially idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury, requires further causality confirmation by the updated Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method published in 2016. Up to now, there is no specific regimen for COVID-19, and COVID-19-related liver injury is mainly controlled by symptomatic and supportive treatment. Here, we review the clinical features of abnormal liver enzymes in COVID-19 and pathogenesis of COVID-19-related liver injury based on the current evidence, which may provide help for clinicians and researchers in exploring the pathogenesis and developing treatment strategies.

Abstract
Objective To describe the longitudinal changes in liver function tests, and their association with illness severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19. Methods A retrospective cohort study of 1003 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was conducted. Longitudinal liver function tests and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results Abnormal liver function parameters were observed, both at admission (ALT 13.2%, AST 8.5%, ALP 2.0%, GGT 7.4%, LDH 37.6%, TBIL 4.0%, DBIL 7.8%, Albumin 10.1%) and peak hospitalization (ALT 29.4%, AST 17.5%, ALP 2.6%, GGT 13.4%, LDH 49.4%, TBIL 10.1%, DBIL 18.0%, Albumin 30.6%) in patients with COVID-19. Compared with non-severe patients, severe patients had markedly higher liver function parameters from baseline to 30 days after hospital admission. Abnormal ALT and LDH at hospital admission and some medications use (Hydroxychloroquine, Lopinavir/Ritonavir, and Traditional Chinese medicines) were associated with peak hospitalization ALT > 5× the upper limit unit of normal (ULN). On multivariate analysis, age >60 years, male, obesity, comorbidity, abnormal LDH and albumin at hospital admission and peak hospitalization were associated with progression to severe COVID-19 (OR > 1; p < 0.05). COX analysis revealed that ALT > 2 ULN (HR=7.0, p=0.011), AST > 2 ULN (HR=34.7, p < 0.001), and TBIL > 2 ULN (HR=54.6, p < 0.001) were associated with a higher mortality. Conclusion Dynamic abnormalities of liver function parameters are common in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and associated with illness severity and mortality.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic and garnered international attention. The causative pathogen of COVID-19 is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel, highly contagious coronavirus. Numerous studies have reported that liver injury is quite common in patients with COVID-19. Hepatitis B has a worldwide distribution as well as in China. At present, hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a leading cause of cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Because both viruses challenge liver physiology, it raises questions as to how coinfection with HBV and SARS-CoV-2 affect disease progression and mortality. Is there an increased risk of COVID-19 in patients with HBV infection? In this review, we summarize the current reports of SARS-CoV-2 and HBV coinfection and elaborate the interaction of the two diseases. The emphasis was placed on evaluating the impact of HBV infection on disease severity and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 and discussing the potential mechanism behind this effect.
