Understanding Composite-Based Structural Equation Modeling Methods From the Perspective of Regression Component Analysis

Regression component analysis (RCA) replaces the factors in a factor analysis model with weighted composites of the model's observed variables. The weight matrix may be calculated from the factor model's parameter estimates. Thus, RCA parameter estimates can be obtained using factor model software, but RCA composites have determinate scores, rather than the indeterminate scores of factors. Analytically, RCA equates to modeling with "regression method" factor scores, except that, while those scores will be inconsistent with the original factor model, they are strictly consistent with the RCA model. When the original factor model is strictly correct in the population and the composites in RCA are standardized, RCA parameter estimates replicate those from regression-weighted forms of partial least squares (PLS) path modeling and generalized structured component analysis (GSCA)-affirming that those methods also equate to modeling with regression method factor scores under the same conditions. Parallel measurement allows RCA to replicate both correlation weight and regression weight versions of PLS and GSCA. These results suggest that RCA and regression-weighted forms of PLS and GSCA are all consistent approaches for modeling data that conforms to a factor model. All analytical methods are described using one consistent symbol palette. Complete R syntax is provided.

Gene-environment pathways to cognitive intelligence and psychotic-like experiences in children

In children, psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are related to risk of psychosis, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. Maladaptive cognitive functioning, influenced by genetic and environmental factors, is hypothesized to mediate the relationship between these factors and childhood PLEs. Using large-scale longitudinal data, we tested the relationships of genetic and environmental factors (such as familial and neighborhood environment) with cognitive intelligence and their relationships with current and future PLEs in children. We leveraged large-scale multimodal data of 6,602 children from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study. Linear mixed model and a novel structural equation modeling (SEM) method that allows estimation of both components and factors were used to estimate the joint effects of cognitive phenotypes polygenic scores (PGSs), familial and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), and supportive environment on NIH Toolbox cognitive intelligence and PLEs. We adjusted for ethnicity (genetically defined), schizophrenia PGS, and additionally unobserved confounders (using computational confound modeling). Our findings indicate that lower cognitive intelligence and higher PLEs are significantly associated with lower PGSs for cognitive phenotypes, lower familial SES, lower neighborhood SES, and less supportive environments. Specifically, cognitive intelligence mediates the effects of these factors on PLEs, with supportive parenting and positive school environments showing the strongest impact on reducing PLEs. This study underscores the influence of genetic and environmental factors on PLEs through their effects on cognitive intelligence. Our findings have policy implications in that improving school and family environments and promoting local economic development may enhance cognitive and mental health in children.

Generalized Structured Component Analysis Accommodating Convex Components: A Knowledge-Based Multivariate Method with Interpretable Composite Indexes

Generalized structured component analysis (GSCA) is a multivariate method for examining theory-driven relationships between variables including components. GSCA can provide the deterministic component score for each individual once model parameters are estimated. As the traditional GSCA always standardizes all indicators and components, however, it could not utilize information on the indicators' scale in parameter estimation. Consequently, its component scores could just show the relative standing of each individual for a component, rather than the individual's absolute standing in terms of the original indicators' measurement scales. In the paper, we propose a new version of GSCA, named convex GSCA, which can produce a new type of unstandardized components, termed convex components, which can be intuitively interpreted in terms of the original indicators' scales. We investigate the empirical performance of the proposed method through the analyses of simulated and real data.

A perspective on using partial least squares structural equation modelling in data articles

This perspective article on using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is intended as a guide for authors who wish to publish datasets that can be analysed with this method as stand-alone data articles. Stand-alone data articles are different from supporting data articles in that they are not linked to a full research article published in another journal. Nevertheless, authors of stand-alone data articles will be required to clearly demonstrate and justify the usefulness of their dataset. This perspective article offers actionable recommendations regarding the conceptualisation phase, the types of data suitable for PLS-SEM and quality criteria to report, which are generally applicable to studies using PLS-SEM. We also present adjusted versions of the HTMT metric for discriminant validity testing that broaden its applicability. Further, we highlight the benefit of linking data articles to already published research papers that employ the PLS-SEM method.

Images of bodies in mass and social media and body dissatisfaction: The role of internalization and self-discrepancy

Introduction

The study examines the influence on body dissatisfaction of viewed images of bodies transmitted over mass media and social media, as mediated by the internalization of body ideals through media and self-discrepancy (the difference between the perceived actual self and the perceived ideal self).

Method

In this study, the images of bodies individuals view in their everyday media diet are estimated using a newly developed pictorial scale for women (thinness) and men (muscularity). For participants, the perceived body image is formed through mass media (magazines, TV) and social media (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat). The self-discrepancy theory is then used to explain the effect of images of bodies in the media on the internalization of these body ideals and body dissatisfaction.

Results

Results show that Facebook and YouTube shape body ideals perceived to be prevalent in the media, negatively influencing internalization and self-discrepancy. Self-discrepancy, in turn, increases body dissatisfaction. However, for males, the perceived body ideals in the media did not affect body dissatisfaction, internalization, or self-discrepancy.

Discussion

These results emphasize the importance of combining and comparing mass and social media and differentiating between female and male concerns regarding body image.

Confirmatory composite analysis in human development research

Research in human development often relies on composites, that is, composed variables such as indices. Their composite nature renders these variables inaccessible to conventional factor-centric psychometric validation techniques such as confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In the context of human development research, there is currently no appropriate technique available for assessing composites with the same degree of rigor comparable to that known from CFA. As a remedy, this article presents confirmatory composite analysis (CCA), a statistical approach suitable to assess composites. CCA is a special type of structural equation modeling that consists of model specification, model identification, model estimation, and model assessment. This article explains CCA and its steps. In addition, it illustrates CCA’s use by means of an illustrative example.
