Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cancer may create problems and needs associated with impaired quality of life (QoL). The first health care encounter is important to enable patients to cope and may ultimately impact QoL. The aim of this study was to describe the patients' experiences of encounters with health care professionals. Another aim was to explore the possible impact that the encounters may have on QoL 1 year after a colon cancer diagnosis. We also wanted to investigate whether patients had received information about treatment related side-effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS This substudy within the QoLiCOL (Quality of Life in COLon cancer) study included 1687 patients (male n = 876, female n = 811, mean age 71) between 2015 and 2019. Questionnaires were answered at diagnosis and after 1 year. QoL was self-assessed with a seven-point Likert scale. Analyses were performed using descriptive statistics and ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 1,550 patients (91.9%) reported feeling well received by health care professionals. We found no statistically significant association with QoL. Patients (87%) reported feeling well informed about their treatment, but few patients recalled having received information regarding potential side effects on bowel or sexual function. INTERPRETATION Patients with colon cancer generally had a positive experience of the encounter with health care where they felt both well received and well informed. However, the amount of relevant information received was scarce. This indicates that it may be difficult to identify whether patients are properly informed prior to treatment for colon cancer only by asking if they feel well informed.

Abstract
AIM While modern treatment has improved rectal cancer (RC) survival, it can cause late side effects that impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to evaluate HRQoL and late effects 1 year after diagnosis in patients who underwent major resection for Stage I-III RC. METHOD All patients with RC registered in the Cancer Registry of Norway between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020, aged ≥ 18 years, and a control group without colorectal cancer were invited to participate in the study by answering a questionnaire on HRQoL and late effects. Functional domains and symptoms were compared in different patient groups and between patients and controls. RESULTS There were 558 patients and 1693 controls eligible for analysis. Response rates were 41% for patients and 23% for controls. Some differences in HRQoL were observed between treatment modalities. Major low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) was prevalent in 60.8% of patients, and was associated with lower functional and higher symptom scores compared with patients with no/minor LARS. Patients with major chronic pain [n = 86 (15.4%)] had significantly lower scores for most of the functional items and higher symptom scores than patients with no/minor chronic pain. Patients had some lower functional scores and several higher symptoms score compared with controls. CONCLUSION Patients who suffered from major LARS or major chronic pain had significantly impaired functions and more symptoms beyond change in bowel function and pain, respectively. Identification and treatment of these patient may hopefully be beneficial for their HRQoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The situation for patients with ostomy can be challenging, probably more in a resource-constrained environment. Our objective was to evaluate quality of life (QoL) (using EQ5D-5L) and stoma-specific QoL (using Stoma QoL) in a high- and low-income setting. METHODS In this cross-sectional study from the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Addis Ababa, and South General Hospital (SGH), Stockholm, patients with a permanent or temporary ostomy at TASH (EthioPerm), (EthioTemp), and patients with ostomy at SGH (SweSto) were included in October 2022-January 2023. RESULTS Patients N = 66 were included in groups: EthioPerm N = 28, EthioTemp N = 17, and SweSto N = 21. In EthioTemp, 88% used homemade stoma bags. Although morbidity related to the nipple itself was similar in the groups, the overall score from Stoma QoL was significantly lower in EthioPerm, 48/100 than in SweSto, 74/100. Scores were significantly lower for pouch-related problems and social interactions in Ethiopian patients. In EthioPerm, 71% of the patients worried that they were a burden to the people close to them compared to 14% in SweSto (p < 0.001). Leakage was over four times more common in EthioPerm than in SweSto. Mean overall EQ5D-5L score was 18 percentage points lower than the national mean score in EthioPerm and 2 percentage points lower in SweSto. CONCLUSION QoL was more affected in the Ethiopian study participants than in the Swedish, even when commercial stoma bags were available. The largest problems were leakage, embarrassment with social interactions, and pouch-related problems. Abstract
Objectives Studies on rectal neuroendocrine tumors (R-NETs) that are 1-2 cm in size are limited, and the optimal treatment for these tumors is not well established. Methods Data from patients with primary localized R-NETs 1-2 cm in size were retrospectively collected from 17 large-scale referral medical centers in China. Long-term prognosis, quality of life (QOL), and fecal incontinence were evaluated, and the effects of local excision (LE) or radical resection (RR) were elucidated using propensity score matching (PSM). Results A total of 272 patients were included in this study; 233 underwent LE, and the remaining 39 underwent RR. Patients in the LE group showed lower tumor location, fewer postoperative Clavien-Dindo III-V complications, more G1 tumors, and lower tumor stage. There were no significant differences in the relapse-free survival or overall survival (OS) between the LE and RR groups after PSM. Patients in the LE group reported superior physical, role, emotional, social, and cognitive functions, global QOL, and Wexner fecal incontinence scores compared with those in the RR group (all P < 0.050). Eighteen (6.6%) patients had lymph node metastases. Multivariable analysis revealed that tumor location (odds ratio [OR] = 3.19, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-10.07, P = 0.010), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) > 1.80 (OR = 4.50, 1.46-15.89, P = 0.012), and T3-T4 (OR = 36.31, 95% CI 7.85-208.62, P < 0.001) were independent risk factor for lymph node metastasis. Conclusions R-NETs measuring 1-2 cm generally have a favorable prognosis, and there is no difference in postoperative survival between LE and RR. For patients without lymph node metastasis, LE should be the preferred choice; however, for patients with a higher tumor location, preoperative NLR >1.8 or T3/T4 tumors, RR should be considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the impact of bowel dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms on the quality of patients with rectal cancer who underwent sphincter-preserving surgery. METHODS This cross-sectional study included patients who were followed up after sphincter-preserving surgery in Korea. Data were collected from May 2022 to February 2023. The participants (n = 110) responded to self-reported questionnaires assessing the Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) score, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and QLQ-C29 questionnaires. RESULTS Among the participants, 66.4% had major low anterior resection syndrome, and 39.1% had moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms. Patients with higher severity of low anterior resection syndrome and lower urinary tract symptoms had a lower quality of life. The IPSS, performance status, duration since the end of the surgery, comorbidities, LARS scores, and tumor location on the anal verge negatively affected the quality of life. CONCLUSION Patients with more severe bowel dysfunction or lower urinary tract symptoms have a poorer quality of life. Nurses should be made aware of the factors that can reduce the quality of life of patients who have undergone sphincter-preserving surgery. Accordingly, they should plan to address the various nursing problems.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe long-term prescribed drug use after rectal cancer treatment. METHODS We identified 12,871 rectal cancer patients without distant metastasis between 2005 and 2016 and 64,341 matched population comparators using CRCBaSe (a Swedish nationwide register linkage of colorectal cancer patients). Mean defined daily doses (DDDs) of drug dispensing during relapse-free follow-up were calculated by Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical drug categories. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from negative binomial regression were used to compare drug dispensing between patients and comparators. RESULTS The overall pattern of drug dispensing was similar among cancer survivors and comparators, although patients had higher mean DDDs of drugs regulating the digestive system. Excess dispensing of drugs for constipation (IRR, 3.35; 95% CI, 3.12-3.61), diarrhea (IRR, 6.43; 95% CI, 5.72-7.22), functional gastrointestinal disorders (IRR, 3.78; 95% CI, 3.15-4.54), and vitamin and mineral supplements (IRR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.24-1.50) was observed up to 10 years after surgery. Treatment with Hartmann's procedure was associated with higher dispensing rates of digestive drugs compared to surgery with anterior resection and abdominoperineal resection but the association was attributed to higher use of diabetic drugs. Additionally, excess digestive drug dispensing was associated with more advanced cancer stage but not with (chemo)radiotherapy treatment. CONCLUSIONS Excess drug use after rectal cancer is primarily driven by bowel-regulating drugs and is not modified by surgical or oncological treatment. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The excess use of bowel-regulating drugs after rectal cancer indicated long-standing postsurgical gastrointestinal morbidity and need of prophylaxis. Reassuringly, no excess use of other drug classes was noted long term.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the current situation and factors influencing physical activity, self-efficacy, and quality of life in Chinese colorectal cancer survivors. Additionally, this study explored the associations between physical activity, self-efficacy, and quality of life. METHODS A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 173 colorectal cancer survivors with a mean age of 59 years. Self-reported data on basic demographic characteristics, physical activity, self-efficacy, and quality of life were collected. RESULTS Among 173 colorectal cancer survivors, 90 (52.0%) were engaged in manual work. The self-efficacy score was found to be 25.99 ± 7.10, while the global health status score was 54.96 ± 21.56. Global health status was associated with sex, residence, chemoradiotherapy, and monthly income (p < 0.01). The self-efficacy score exhibited a significant positive correlation with quality of life, while demonstrating a negative correlation with symptom scores (p < 0.01). Recreational PA scores were positively associated with global health status (P < 0.05). Self-efficacy, recreational physical activity during winter, and whether the participants underwent chemoradiotherapy explained 29.3% of the variance in quality of life among colorectal cancer survivors. CONCLUSIONS Colorectal cancer survivors exhibited low levels of physical activity, self-efficacy, and quality of life. Their health is influenced by self-efficacy, recreational physical activity, and chemoradiotherapy. When developing intervention plans for colorectal cancer survivorship, it is crucial to consider survivors' self-efficacy and the type of physical activity in which they engage.
