Abstract
Introduction: Immune check point inhibitors have recently entered the armamentarium of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. Among them, the combination of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab has pushed it a step forward; however, a number of patients still present primary non-responses without any biomarker to predict responses to different options. Here, we aimed to identify a putative baseline biomarker to predict the response to atezolizumab–bevacizumab, by investigating whether baseline PD1+ and PD-L1+ peripheral granulocyte percentages might offer a non-invasive, cheap, and easily feasible assay. Methods: A prospective Italian cohort of 34 patients treated by atezolizumab–bevacizumab was tested to assay the baseline percentage of peripheral granulocytes and their PD1 and PD-L1 expression. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was also considered, and all data were compared with the clinical course of patients. Results: A low-baseline PD1+ peripheral granulocyte percentage turned out to predict responder patients (mean ±SD of PD1+ granulocyte percentage in responders versus non-responders: 9.9 ± 9.1 vs. 29.2 ± 17.6; student’s t-test, p < 0.01). In line, patients identified by a low PD1+ granulocyte percentage displayed a longer TTP (log-rank test, p < 0.0001). A lower granulocyte percentage on total white blood cells, irrespective of PD1 or PD-L1 expression, is also associated with responses to atezolizumab–bevacizumab (log-rank test, p < 0.05). No predictive value was observed for either the PD-L1+ granulocyte percentage or NLR. Conclusions: A low-baseline PD1+ peripheral granulocyte percentage is associated with responses to atezolizumab–bevacizumab treatment in advanced HCC. These findings encourage evaluating this minimally invasive, cheap, and easy test in further independent cohorts and outlining the relevance of innate immunity in the response to immune-checkpoint inhibitors.

Abstract
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is used to reflect body's inflammatory status with prognostic value in different cancers. We aimed to investigate the influence of preoperative NLR in the prognosis of CRLM patients receiving surgery using meta-analysis. Data in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases created before October 2022 were recruited. Meta-analysis was carried out with RevMan 5.3 and Stata16 software, and the primary outcome indicators included overall survival (OS), and secondary outcome indicators included disease-free survival (DFS) and relapse-free survival (RFS). The pooled risk ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each outcome indicator were determined using random-effects models or fixed-effects models. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for NLR and clinicopathological characteristics were determined with a fixed-effects model. 18 papers published between 2008 and 2022 (3184 patients in total) were included. The pooled analysis found that high preoperative NLR was correlated with poor OS (multivariate HR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.61-2.08, p < 0.01), DFS (multivariate HR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.16-2.71, p < 0.01) and RFS (multivariate HR = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.15-1.85, p < 0.01), but NLR was not related to clinicopathological features of CRLM patients correlation. In conclusion, NLR is an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with CRLM. More large-scale clinical researches are required in the future to demonstrate the inclusion of preoperative NLR as a prognostic indicator for CRLM patients to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the role of ficolin-2 (FCN2) in the development and course of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to contribute to the evolution of innovative HCC therapeutics. Methods Oncomine, GEPIA (Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis), TISIDB (Tumor Immune System Interactions and Drug Bank database), UALCAN (University of Alabama at Birmingham Cancer data analysis portal), UCSC (University of California, Santa Cruz), R package, the Kaplan–Meier technique, Cox regression analysis, LinkedOmics, Pearson’s correlation, and a nomogram were used to investigate the prognostic value of FCN2 in HCC. Co-expressed genes were screened. A protein–protein interaction network was created using the STRING database. Finally, immunohistochemistry was performed to establish the expression of FCN2 in HCC tissues. A pan-cancer study centered on HCC-related molecular analysis was also conducted to look for a link between FCN2 and immune infiltration, immune modulators, and chemokine receptors. Results In HCC tissues, the expression of FCN2 was observed to be lower than that in normal tissues. This was connected to the HCC marker alpha-fetoprotein, showing that FCN2 is involved in the development and progression of cancer. FCN2 may act through Staphylococcus aureus infection, lectins, and other pathways. Furthermore, at the immune level, the expression of FCN2 in HCC was associated with some immune cell infiltration, immunomodulators, and chemokine receptors. Conclusion FCN2 may be an immune checkpoint inhibitor for HCC, creating a breakthrough in the treatment of HCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is substantial evidence to support that the alterations in the immune-inflammation system play a crucial role in the pathogenic mechanism of affective disorders. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been recently investigated as simple, rapid, and inexpensive inflammation markers. The purpose of the research is to use large-scale clinical data to study the difference of the inflammation ratios in first-episode MDD, recurrent MDD, BD depressive episodes and manic episode. METHODS A cross-sectional design was applied to retrospectively analyse the data that were extracted from electronic health records. A total of 16,174 Chinese affective disorder patients were enrolled in this study, and 6681 healthy subjects served as controls. The differences in the NLR, MLR, PLR and whole blood count data among different groups were compared, and the contributing factors for the occurrence of MDD and BD were analysed. RESULTS First-episode and recurrent MDD patients exhibited significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to healthy controls. Compared with the MDD patients, the BD patients showed higher NLRs and MLRs and lower PLRs. Further analysis showed that the BD manic episode patients had significantly elevated NLRs and MLRs compared to patients with BD depressive episodes or MDD. MLR was a risk factor for the occurrence of MDD and that the NLR and MLR were risk factors for the occurrence of BD. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD, particularly during manic BD episodes.

Abstract
AIM To compare clinical characteristics and identify factors predictive of resistance to initial treatment with methotrexate-folinic acid (MTX-FA) in women with low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). METHODS Retrospective chart reviews were conducted in patients diagnosed with low-risk GTN who were treated with MTX-FA at Siriraj Hospital between 2002 and 2018. Demographic data, disease characteristics, treatment response, toxicity, and data of the subsequent pregnancy were collected and analyzed. Groups of patients who were responsive or resistant to treatment were compared. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors predictive of resistance to methotrexate chemotherapy. RESULTS Totally, 113 patients were eligible for analysis. The primary remission rate was 55.8% with first-line MTX-FA. All other patients achieved remission by subsequent treatment with actinomycin D or multiple-agent chemotherapy. Relapse of disease occurred in 4.4% and the overall survival rate was 99.1%. Univariate analysis showed that pretreatment serum hCG, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio at baseline, and serum hCG ratio of the first three consecutive cycles (C) were significantly associated with resistance to MTX-FA. Independent factors that predict failure to respond to first-line MTX-FA were pretreatment serum hCG ≥15,000 IU/L, a less than 4.8-fold reduction of serum hCG between cycle 1 and cycle 2 (C1/C2), and a less than seven-fold reduction of serum hCG from cycle 2 to cycle 3 (C2/C3). CONCLUSIONS First-line MTX-FA treatment is effective in 55.8% of patients. Pretreatment serum hCG, and serum hCG ratio between consecutive treatment cycles can predict initial treatment failure.

Abstract
The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory marker which has been investigated as a prognostic indicator in post-therapeutic recurrence and survival of patients with HCC. Our aim was to review all studies that assessed the prognostic value of pre-treatment NLR in predicting patient survival, cancer recurrence, and graft survival in patients undergoing various therapies for HCC. We searched the database of PubMed and Google Scholar to review all studies that have the word "NLR" and the word "HCC." We included all studies that assessed pre-treatment NLR as a prognostic factor in predicting outcomes in HCC patients. We excluded studies that assessed the correlation between post-treatment NLR or dynamic changes in NLR after treatment and HCC outcomes in an effort to minimize the confounding effect of each treatment on NLR. We reviewed 123 studies that studied the correlation between pre-treatment NLR and patient survival, 72 studies that evaluated the correlation between pre-treatment NLR and tumor recurrence, 21 studies that evaluated the correlation between NLR and tumor behavior, and 4 studies that assessed the correlation between NLR and graft survival. We found a remarkable heterogeneity between the methods of the studies, which is likely responsible for the differences in outcomes. The majority of the studies suggested a correlation between higher levels of pre-treatment NLR and poor outcomes. We concluded that NLR is a reliable and inexpensive biomarker and should be incorporated into other prognostic models to help determine outcomes following HCC treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There are gaps in knowledge in breast cancer prevention studies focusing on interactions among mammographic findings, inflammation, and diet, especially those related to carbohydrates. OBJECTIVE We aimed to verify the association among mammographic findings, inflammatory markers, and carbohydrate quality index (CQI) in women. METHODOLOGY This was a cross-sectional study of 532 women assisted in a healthcare service. The enrolled women were divided into two groups according to their mammographic findings: those without and those with abnormal mammographic findings. Two 24-hour dietary reminders were applied, and CQI was determined based on four components: fibers, glycemic index, ratio between whole and total grains, and ratio between solid and total carbohydrates. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was calculated as an inflammatory marker. RESULTS There were 178 (33.5%) women with abnormal mammographic findings, and 20 (3.8%) had NLR. There was no association between CQI and mammographic findings and NLR. Women with abnormal mammographic findings and high NLR had lower CQI (p = 0.039) and lower whole total ratio (p = 0.024). CONCLUSION Women with abnormal findings and high NLR had worse CQI and worse overall total grain ratio.

Abstract
Background: Combination therapy with anti-programmed death-ligand 1 monoclonal antibody atezolizumab plus anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agent bevacizumab (Atezo/Bev) was approved in 2020 as a first-line treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Atezo/Bev therapy is relatively well tolerated; however, factors that can predict its response have not yet been reported. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether the pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) could predict the therapeutic response in patients with HCC treated with Atezo/Bev therapy. Methods: We analyzed the course of 40 patients with HCC who received Atezo/Bev therapy at our hospital and attempted to identify pretreatment factors that could predict response by comparing those who achieved disease control with those who did not. Results: The pretreatment NLR value in patients who achieved disease control was significantly lower than that in patients with disease progression (2.47 vs. 4.48, p = 0.013). Using the optimal NLR cut-off value for predicting response (3.21) determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, patients with NLR ≤ 3.21 had significantly better progression-free survival than those with NLR > 3.21 (p < 0.0001), although there were no significant differences in liver function or tumor-related background factors between the two groups. Conclusions: The pretreatment NLR value may be a useful predictor of response to Atezo/Bev therapy for HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Seeking potentially novel blood markers of liver fibrosis and steatosis is constantly of crucial importance. Despite a growing number of studies in this field of hepatology, a certain role of hematological indices in the course of liver disorders has not been fully elucidated, yet.
AIM To evaluate a diagnostic accuracy of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume-to-platelet-ratio (MPR) in the course of alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
METHODS One hundred forty-two patients with ALC, 92 with NAFLD and 68 persons in control group were enrolled in the study. Hematological indices (NLR, PLR and MPR), indirect and direct markers of liver fibrosis (aspartate transaminase to alkaline transaminase ratio, aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index, fibrosis-4, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase to platelet ratio, procollagen I carboxyterminal propeptide, procollagen III aminoterminal propeptide, transforming growth factor-α, platelet-derived growth factor AB, laminin) were measured in each person. Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score in ALC group and NAFLD fibrosis score together with BARD score were calculated in NAFLD patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) values were applied to assess the sensitivity and specificity of examined markers and to evaluate proposed cut-offs of measured indices in the course of ALC and NAFLD.
RESULTS MPR and NLR values in ALC patients were significantly higher in comparison to control group; PLR level was significantly lower. MPR and PLR correlated with assessed indirect and direct markers of liver fibrosis. MPR, NLR and PLR correlated with MELD score. NLR level in NAFLD patients was significantly higher in comparison to controls. MPR correlated with indirect markers of liver fibrosis and NAFLD fibrosis score. AUC values and proposed cut-offs for NLR, PLR and MPR in ALC patients were: 0.821 (> 2.227), 0.675 (< 70.445) and 0.929 (> 0.048), respectively. AUC values and proposed cut-offs for NLR, PLR and MPR in NAFLD group were: 0.725 (> 2.034), 0.528 (> 97.101) and 0.547 (> 0.038), respectively.
CONCLUSION Hematological markers are inseparably connected with serological indices of liver fibrosis in ALC and NAFLD patients. MPR and NLR turned out to be the most powerful parameters in ALC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although neutrophils have been linked to the progression of cancer, uncertainty exists around their association with cancer outcomes, depending on the site, outcome and treatments considered. We aimed to evaluate the strength and validity of evidence on the association between either the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) or tumour-associated neutrophils (TAN) and cancer prognosis. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from inception to 29 May 2020 for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies on neutrophil counts (here NLR or TAN) and specific cancer outcomes related to disease progression or survival. The available evidence was graded as strong, highly suggestive, suggestive, weak or uncertain through the application of pre-set GRADE criteria. RESULTS A total of 204 meta-analyses from 86 studies investigating the association between either NLR or TAN and cancer outcomes met the criteria for inclusion. All but one meta-analyses found a hazard ratio (HR) which increased risk (HR > 1). We did not find sufficient meta-analyses to evaluate TAN and cancer outcomes (N = 9). When assessed for magnitude of effect, significance and bias related to heterogeneity and small study effects, 18 (9%) associations between NLR and outcomes in composite cancer endpoints (combined analysis), cancers treated with immunotherapy and some site specific cancers (urinary, nasopharyngeal, gastric, breast, endometrial, soft tissue sarcoma and hepatocellular cancers) were supported by strong evidence. CONCLUSION In total, 60 (29%) meta-analyses presented strong or highly suggestive evidence. Although the NLR and TAN hold clinical promise in their association with poor cancer prognosis, further research is required to provide robust evidence, assess causality and test clinical utility. Abstract
Background Hepatic artery interventional therapy has been recognized as the first choice for advanced liver cancer. However, reliable prognostic markers are still lacking. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of inflammation factors including neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with hepatic artery interventional treatments. Methods Patients undergoing hepatic artery interventional therapy after being diagnosed with HCC between 2007 and 2014 were enrolled. Pre-treatment NLR, PLR and MLR were calculated, and all factors including gender, age, TNM stage, BCLC staging, inflammation factors, LDH, ALP, CEA, AFP, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, portal vein involvement, surgical history and hepatic artery interventional treatment on overall survival (OS) were evaluated by the univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses. Results Overall, 407 patients were included. The optimal cutoff values determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses for NLR, PLR and MLR were 3.82, 140.00 and 0.27, respectively. High NLR was associated with worse OS (median survival time: high NLR group 9 vs low NLR group 19 months, HR 1.842, 95% CI: 1.457–2.329, P<0.001). Elevated PLR was negatively correlated with OS (8 vs 18 months, HR 1.677, 95% CI: 1.302–2.161, P<0.001). Patients in high MLR group had a worse OS (10 vs 21 months, HR 1.626, 95% CI: 1.291–2.048, P<0.001). In multivariate analysis, NLR, LDH, ALP and portal vein involvement were independent prognostic factors for OS of HCC patients after hepatic artery interventional therapy. In addition, for patients in BCLC stage A and B, higher NLR, PLR and MLR were all significantly negatively correlated to median survival time (NLR: 17 vs 26 months, HR: 1.739 (95% CI: 1.279–2.365), P<0.001; PLR: 18 vs 26 months, HR: 1.681 (95% CI: 1.245–2.271), P=0.001; MLR: 20 vs 26 months, HR: 1.589 (95% CI: 1.185–2.129), P=0.002). Conclusion Elevated pre-treatment NLR, PLR and MLR were associated with worse survival time in HCC patients after hepatic artery interventional therapy. Among them, NLR was an independent prognostic factor for OS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a frequent cause of cancer related death globally. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and albumin bilirubin (ALBI) grade are emerging prognostic indicators in HCC.
AIM To study published literature of NLR and ALBI over the last five years, and to validate NLR and ALBI locally in our centre as indicators of HCC survival.
METHODS A systematic review of the published literature on PubMed of NLR and ALBI in HCC over the last five years. The search followed the guidelines of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Additionally, we also investigated HCC cases between December 2013 and December 2018 in our centre.
RESULTS There were 54 studies describing the relation between HCC and NLR and 95 studies describing the relation between HCC and ALBI grade over the last five years. Our local cohort of patients showed NLR to have a significant negative relationship to survival (P = 0.011). There was also significant inverse relationship between the size of the largest HCC nodule and survival (P = 0.009). Median survival with alpha fetoprotein (AFP) < 10 KU/L was 20 mo and with AFP > 10 KU/L was 5 mo. We found that AFP was inversely related to survival, this relationship was not statically significant (P = 0.132). Mean survival for ALBI grade 1 was 37.7 mo, ALBI grade 2 was 13.4 months and ALBI grade 3 was 4.5 mo. ALBI grades performed better than Child Turcotte Pugh score in detecting death from HCC.
CONCLUSION NLR and ALBI grade in HCC predict survival better than the conventional alpha fetoprotein. ALBI grade performs better than Child Turcotte Pugh score. These markers are done as part of routine clinical care and in cases of normal alpha fetoprotein, these markers could give a better understanding of the patient disease progression. NLR and ALBI grade could have a role in modified easier to learn staging and prognostic systems for HCC.

Abstract
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by unwanted, intrusive and disturbing thoughts or images that cause anxiety and repetitive behaviours or mental acts to relieve these thoughts or images. Considering controversial aetiology of OCD and growing evidence for the role of inflammation in OCD, the aim of this study was to examine the association between OCD and subclinical inflammatory markers, namely neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio(PLR) in adult patients and to investigate the association between antidepressant medications and NLR, PLR. Electronic medical records(EMR) of 24,635 patients aged 18-64 were reviewed and after exclusion of comorbid psychiatric and medical diagnosis 135 EMR of OCD patients were included into final analyses and compared with the healthy control group (n=133). Blood cell counts were noted to calculate NLR and PLR. Medications of patients were gathered from all patients to calculate fluoxetine-equivalent-dose(FED) to examine the effects of antidepressants on NLR and PLR. NLR and PLR were significantly higher in OCD. Contrary to the correlation of FED with NLR, PLR was found to not correlate with FED. Hence, PLR would be considered as a robust biomarker to medication effect contrary to NLR. OCD was significantly predicted by both NLR and PLR in logistic regression analyzes.

Abstract
Objectives: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are inexpensive and reproducible biomarkers of inflammation. This is the first meta-analysis exploring the role of NLR, MLR and PLR in non-affective psychosis.Methods: Eight studies have been identified from the main electronic databases. Meta-analyses based on random-effects models have been carried out generating pooled standardised mean differences (SMDs) between non-affective psychotic patients and healthy controls (HCs).Results: Subjects with non-affective psychosis had a significant higher NLR and MLR as compared with HC (respectively SMD = 0.715; P < 0.001; I2=57.565% and SMD = 0.417; P = 0.001; I2=65.754%), confirmed by heterogeneity-based sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses showed no differences in effect size across different study characteristics, including drug treatment status, diagnosis, and setting. Meta-regression showed that age influenced the relationship between non-affective psychosis and MLR. A trend of significance, not confirmed by heterogeneity-based sensitivity analysis, was observed in PLR with patients showing higher PLR than HC.Conclusions: Our meta-analysis supports the hypothesis that an inflammatory activation occurs in non-affective psychosis and inflammatory ratios, especially NLR and MLR, may be useful to detect this activation.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to investigate the effectiveness of the prognostic roles of blood inflammatory markers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients receiving sorafenib. Methods: We carried out a comprehensive literature search in four databases. Study endpoints, hazard ratios (HRs) and the associated 95% confidence intervals (CI) for clinical outcomes, which were to assess therapeutic efficacy, were extracted. This meta-analysis was conducted by Review Manager 5.3. Results: We summarized the available evidence from 18 studies with a total of 2,745 cases. The pooled results showed that the synthesized HR favored patients with low pretreatment NLR (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio), which also indicated that HCC patients with a lower baseline NLR may have a better response to sorafenib than those with higher NLR (HR = 1.76, 95% CI [1.44, 2.15], P < 0.00001, I2 = 68%). Significance was also observed for the prognostic function of the PLR (platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio) of HCC patients treated with sorafenib (HR = 1.49, 95% CI [1.16, 1.93], P = 0.002, I2 = 0%, P = 0.65). The subgroup analysis revealed that different gene backgrounds play a prominent role in the source of heterogeneity. Interestingly, the predictive effect on OS (overall survival) was more pronounced as the NLR cutoff value increased. Notably, a significant predictive effect of NLR on the clinical outcome was detected in HCC patients treated with sorafenib compared to those treated with tivantinib. Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study reported promising predictive biomarkers for HCC patients and notably indicated that HCC patients with a lower baseline NLR and PLR may have a better response to sorafenib than those with higher ones. Further large-scale prospective studies are required to determine the optimal NLR and PLR cutoff values, which are important for identifying the dominant populations for sorafenib treatment.

Abstract
AIM Impact of several immune-inflammatory markers on long-term outcome has been reported in various malignancies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate through a meta-analysis the oncological outcome of immune-inflammatory markers, such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) in esophageal cancer. METHODS A systematic electronic search for relevant studies was carried out in PubMed, Cochrane library, Embase, and Google scholar. Meta-analysis was done using hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) as effect measures. A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. P-values <.01 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS A total of 10 retrospective articles (n = 4551) were included in this study. Synthesized results showed that higher NLR and CAR were significantly associated with poor overall survival (HR 1.47, 95% CI = 1.32-1.63, P < .00001) and HR 1.88, 95% CI = 1.28-2.77, P < .001, respectively). On the contrary, PLR was not a prognostic factor in our analysis (HR 1.25, 95% CI = 1.01-1.54, P < .01). Elevated NLR, PLR, and CAR were strongly associated with a higher T stage (HR 2.28, 95% CI = 1.67-3.11; HR 1.57, 95% CI = 1.29-1.90; HR 1.76, 95% CI = 1.16-2.67, respectively). Begg's funnel plots identified significant publication bias in NLR, but not in PLR and CAR. CONCLUSION NLR and CAR represent useful guides for the management of esophageal cancer, although publication bias should be considered. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the results of the present study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neutrophil-lymphocyte, monocyte-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratio are inexpensive and reproducible biomarkers of inflammation found to be elevated in mood disorders. This study aimed to compare inflammatory ratios between bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder and between bipolar disorder manic episodes and bipolar disorder depressive episodes. METHOD We included 142 Caucasian patients (major depressive disorder: n = 36; bipolar disorder manic episode: n = 66; bipolar disorder depressive episode: n = 40). We measured white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, glucose, and total cholesterol. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, monocyte-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio were calculated. RESULTS Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio were significantly higher in bipolar disorder manic episodes when compared to bipolar disorder depressive episodes and major depressive disorder episodes after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, our study is the first one to compare inflammatory ratios between different bipolar disorder phases and major depressive disorder episodes. In accord with previous studies on other inflammatory mediators, we found higher neutrophil-lymphocyte and monocyte-lymphocyte ratios in bipolar manic episodes, suggesting that inflammatory changes occur especially during acute episodes of mania.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and presence of malnutrition have been found to be associated with mortality and morbidity in various clinical conditions. We investigated the association between NLR and nutritional status in geriatric patients. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 95 geriatric (age ≥ 65 years) patients from general internal medicine outpatient clinic of a university hospital. Nutritional status of the patients was evaluated using Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index, albumin, total cholesterol, body mass index, mid-arm circumference, and calf circumference. NLR was calculated from the complete blood count results. RESULTS A total of 59 patients were female, and the mean age was 73 ± 9.8 years. According to the MNA, 51.6% of patients had a normal nutritional status, and 48.4% were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. The mean NLR of patients with malnourished or at risk of malnutrition was significantly higher than that of patients with normal nutritional status (P = 0.004). There was a negative correlation between NLRs and the MNA scores (r = -0.276, P = 0.007). Optimal NLR cutoff point for patients with malnourished or at risk of malnutrition was 1.81 with 71.7% sensitivity and 63.3% specificity [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.562-0.780, P = 0.004]. Logistic regression analysis revealed that elevated NLR was an independent factor in prediction of malnutrition or risk of malnutrition in geriatric patients. CONCLUSION These results demonstrated that NLR was associated with the nutritional status of geriatric patients. NLR may be a useful nutritional marker for evaluating the nutritional status of geriatric outpatients.

Abstract
The immune and inflammatory system is involved in the etiology of mood disorders. Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are inexpensive and reproducible biomarkers of inflammation. This is the first meta-analysis exploring the role of NLR and PLR in mood disorder. We identified 11 studies according to our inclusion criteria from the main Electronic Databases. Meta-analyses were carried out generating pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) between index and healthy controls (HC). Heterogeneity was estimated. Relevant sensitivity and meta-regression analyses were conducted. Subjects with bipolar disorder (BD) had higher NLR and PLR as compared with HC (respectively SMD = 0.672; p < 0.001; I2 = 82.4% and SMD = 0.425; p = 0.048; I2 = 86.53%). Heterogeneity-based sensitivity analyses confirmed these findings. Subgroup analysis evidenced an influence of bipolar phase on the overall estimate whit studies including subjects in manic and any bipolar phase showing a significantly higher NLR and PLR as compared with HC whereas the effect was not significant among studies including only euthymic bipolar subjects. Meta-regression showed that age and sex influenced the relationship between BD and NLR but not the relationship between BD and PLR. Meta-analysis was not carried out for MLR because our search identified only one study when comparing BD to HC, and only one study when comparing MDD to HC. Subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD) had higher NLR as compared with HC (SMD = 0.670; p = 0.028; I2 = 89.931%). Heterogeneity-based sensitivity analyses and meta-regression confirmed these findings. Our meta-analysis supports the hypothesis that an inflammatory activation occurs in mood disorders and NLR and PLR may be useful to detect this activation. More researches including comparison of NLR, PLR and MLR between different bipolar phases and between BD and MDD are needed.
