Self‐Regulation Deficiency in Predicting Problematic Use of Mobile Social Networking Apps: The Role of Media Dependency*

Fostering college students' mental well-being: the impact of social networking site utilization on emotion management and regulation

With the widespread proliferation of the Internet, social networking sites have increasingly become integrated into the daily lives of university students, leading to a growing reliance on these platforms. Several studies have suggested that this emotional dependence on social networking sites stems from unmet psychological needs. Meanwhile, social rejection has been identified as a prevalent phenomenon that exacerbates the deficiency of individual psychological needs. However, existing research on aspect-level sentiment analysis among college students within social networking sites faces challenges such as inadequate feature extraction, ineffective handling of data noise, and the neglect of complex interactions in multimodal data. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel approach, the Multi-Granular View Dynamic Fusion Model (MVDFM), developed from both coarse-grained and fine-grained perspectives. MVDFM extracts multi-granular view features from textual and visual content, incorporating a dynamic gating self-attention mechanism. Additionally, it proposes a three-view decomposition higher-order pooling mechanism for a two-stage dynamic fusion of these features. Experimental results demonstrate the model's effectiveness, achieving accuracy and F1 values of 78.78% and 74.48% on the Twitter-2015 dataset, and 73.89% and 72.47% on the Twitter-2017 dataset, respectively. This efficient supervision enables the extraction of deep semantic information from multimodal data generated by college students on social networking sites. The model adeptly mines pertinent information related to target aspect-based words, enhancing the efficacy of aspect-level emotion prediction. Furthermore, it facilitates an effective exploration of the intricate interplay between social rejection, monitoring on social networking sites, the fear of missing out, and dependence on social networking sites, ultimately aiding university students in regulating their emotional management.

Problematic Social Media Use and Employee Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review

A systematic literature review was conducted to summarize research that examined the association between problematic social media use (PSMU) and employee work-related and psychological outcomes. Following rigorous protocols, 42 peer-reviewed studies published from 2013 to 2022 were identified from the Web of Science, Elsevier, and PubMed databases, which were used to analyze and evaluate the current research boundary, explore the accumulated knowledge, and propose approaches to further enrich this research area. The findings of this review revealed that the current research mainly focuses on four research themes (a) focal areas of effects, (b) divergence of effects, (c) contextual specificity, and (d) investigated variables. However, the existing knowledge on this domain is still limited in understanding the conceptualization of PSMU, along with the narrow focus on methodological, geographical focus, and objective measures. This study contributes to theory, as it is one of the few reviews that link PSMU to employee outcomes, building an integrated framework to outline future research trends.

Distal and proximal factors of wearable users' quantified-self dependence: A cognitive-behavioral model

Objective

While using self-tracking devices for physical health has become ubiquitous, the potential for quantified-self (QS) dependence as a detrimental outcome for mental health is under-explored. This study examined the mechanism of wearable users' QS dependence by investigating both the distal and proximal factors based on a cognitive-behavioral model.

Methods

A total of 535 wearable users aged 18-35 years were surveyed in this study. The surveys included control variable questions related to age, gender, monthly income, BMI, and wearable use experience. Key variable measures included distal factor (habitual use of wearables), proximal factors (perceived external regulation, recognition, and perceived irreplaceability), and perceived QS dependence. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test research hypotheses.

Results

The results revealed that habitual use of wearables as a distal factor alone was negatively associated with perceived QS dependence. However, it positively influenced perceived external regulation, recognition, and perceived irreplaceability, which in turn significantly contributed to perceived QS dependence, suggesting the suppression effect of the proximal factors.

Conclusions

The relationships between habitual use of wearables and QS dependence are complex. Although habitual use may seem apparently harmless, it can indirectly foster maladaptive cognitions, thereby promoting dependence. These findings underscore the potential threats of maladaptive cognitions that may arise from leveraging technology to promote physical health, thus offering guidance to technology designers for interventions.
