Abstract
Equine anesthesia is related to high morbidity and mortality rates and recent studies suggested that the period of recovery remains the phase associated with the greatest risk of mortality in horses. Intraoperative hypotension, hypoxemia, and hypercapnia are recognized as potential determinants of recovery quality. This study, conducted at the Equine University Hospital of Liege, aimed to explore how these factors influence recovery outcomes and compare complications between non-emergency and emergency procedures. We analyzed data from 1057 horses, with a mean weight of 498 kg (ranging from 150 to 850 kg) and a mean age of 10.7 (ranging from 0.5 to 37 years), undergoing standardized general anesthesia for non-emergency and emergency procedures to assess which factors influence recovery quality. Recoveries were graded as 'good' or 'bad' and age, sex, breed, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification, weight, anesthesia duration, presence of hypotension, hypoxemia, and hypercapnia were compared with a logistic regression analysis. Our findings highlight the multifactorial nature of anesthetic recovery in horses, with breed, age, anesthesia and recovery duration, and emergency status emerging as significant influencing factors. Additionally, monitoring and managing hypoxemia and hypotension remain critical due to their recognized impact on recovery quality. However, despite their clinical relevance, the specific effects of these variables on anesthetic recovery in horses remain insufficiently studied, emphasizing the need for further research to refine perioperative management strategies and improve outcomes.

Abstract
Effective pain management in horses can be a challenge despite the understanding that appropriate analgesia improves animal welfare and increases treatment success. The administration of NSAID drugs, particularly phenylbutazone and flunixin, are common practice in equine veterinary patients. Known for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, NSAIDs are used for the treatment of a variety of conditions in horses, from gastrointestinal to orthopedic pain. Despite extensive usage, NSAIDs have a narrow margin of safety and the body of literature documenting the efficacy and side effects of different NSAIDs is broad. The three main side effects associated with excessive or prolonged NSAID usage in horses include gastroduodenal ulceration, right dorsal colitis (RDC) and renal papillary necrosis. The use of cyclooxygenase-2 selective NSAIDS, such as firocoxib, are theoretically safer. The aim of this paper is to review the current literature on the use and efficacy of different NSAIDs, summarise the associated side effects of NSAID usage and evaluate the current state of knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of such toxicities.

Abstract
A bolus of 50 mg kg -1 MgSO4 (treatment Mg) or the same volume of saline (treatment S) was infused over 15 minutes in 5 adult healthy horses. T0 was the end of the infusion. Physiological parameters were recorded throughout the study period. Measurements of electrical, thermal and mechanical nociceptive thresholds were performed at the pelvic limbs at baseline (before T0), and at specific timepoints. Blood samples were taken at fixed timepoints before, during and until 12 hours after the infusion. For statistical analysis, the 95% confidence intervals (CI's) for the differences in nociceptive thresholds between treatments were calculated. Physiological parameters were compared using a linear mixed model (global α = 0.05, with Bonferroni correction α = 0.0125). The concentrations of ions were also compared with baseline values at specific timepoints, using a linear mixed model. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was derived between the ion concentrations. The 95% CI's of thermal, mechanical and electrical thresholds were [-1; +2]°C, [0; +3] N and [-1; +1] mA (positive differences indicate higher thresholds for treatment Mg), respectively. Heart rate was significantly higher (p < 0.0001) and non-invasive systolic arterial pressure (p < 0.0001) and respiratory rate (p = 0.0002) significantly lower after treatment Mg compared to treatment S. Additionally, non-invasive systolic arterial pressure was significantly different at T45 (p < 0.001). Although mild changes in cardiovascular parameters and plasma concentrations were seen with intravenous administration of MgSO4, no changes in nociceptive thresholds were detected in standing non-sedated horses.

Abstract
The objective was to demonstrate walking locomotor pattern alterations after co-administration of acepromazine and morphine in horses. Six mature horses receiving four different treatments were used. Treatments consisted of a single dose of saline solution, 0.2 mg/kg bwt of morphine hydrochloride, 0.02 mg/kg bwt of acepromazine maleate, and a combination of 0.2 mg/kg bwt of morphine hydrochloride with 0.02 mg/kg bwt of acepromazine maleate. A three-dimensional accelerometric device was used to collect data. Walking tests were performed 10 min prior to injection, and then at 5, 10, 15, and 20 min after the injection, and then every 10 min for 3 h. Eight variables were calculated including stride kinematic, coordination, and energetic parameters; moreover ground-to-lip distance (GLD), as a tranquilization parameter, was also measured. A significant interaction was observed in all the variables studied but regularity, mediolateral power, the propulsive part of the power, and the GLD. An evident counteraction of the effects caused by both, opioids and phenothiazines, in the gait pattern was observed. The co-administration of acepromazine and morphine could allow a safe opiate administration while minimizing the possible central nervous system (CNS) excitation and reducing potential locomotor adverse effects.

Abstract
Simple Summary Recovery is the most dangerous phase of general anaesthesia in horses. Numerous publications have reported about this phase, but structured reviews that try to reduce the risk of bias of narrative reviews/expert opinions, focussing on the topic are missing. Therefore, the aim of the present article was to publish the first structured review as a summary of the literature focussing on the recovery phase after general anaesthesia in horses. The objective was to summarise the available literature, taking into account the scientific evidence of the individual studies. A structured approach was followed with two experts in the field independently deciding on article inclusion and its level of scientific evidence. A total number of 444 articles, sorted by topics and classified based on their levels of evidence, were finally included into the present summary. The most important findings were summarised and discussed. The present structured review can be used as a compilation of the publications that, to date, focus on the recovery phase after general anaesthesia in adult horses. This type of review tries to minimise the risk of bias inherent to narrative reviews/expert opinions. Abstract Recovery remains the most dangerous phase of general anaesthesia in horses. The objective of this publication was to perform a structured literature review including levels of evidence (LoE) of each study with the keywords “recovery anaesthesia horse”, entered at once, in the search browsers PubMed and Web of Science. The two authors independently evaluated each candidate article. A final list with 444 articles was obtained on 5 April 2021, classified as: 41 “narrative reviews/expert opinions”, 16 “retrospective outcome studies”, 5 “surveys”, 59 “premedication/sedation and induction drugs”, 27 “maintenance with inhalant agents”, 55 “maintenance with total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA)”, 3 “TIVA versus inhalants”, 56 “maintenance with partial intravenous anaesthesia (PIVA)”, 27 “other drugs used during maintenance”, 18 “drugs before/during recovery”, 18 “recovery systems”, 21 “respiratory system in recovery”, 41 “other factors”, 51 “case series/reports” and 6 “systems to score recoveries”. Of them, 167 were LoE 1, 36 LoE 2, 33 LoE 3, 110 LoE 4, 90 LoE 5 and 8 could not be classified based on the available abstract. This review can be used as an up-to-date compilation of the literature about recovery after general anaesthesia in adult horses that tried to minimise the bias inherent to narrative reviews.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to describe butorphanol pharmacokinetics and bioavailability following intranasal administration to horses. Six adult horses received 0.05 mg/kg butorphanol, in a randomised crossover design, by either intravenous or intranasal route. Plasma concentrations of butorphanol were measured at predetermined time points using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry assay. After intravenous injection, mean ±SD butorphanol steady-state volume of distribution and clearance was 3.20 ± 1.77 l/kg and 3.18 ± 1.47 L/kg/h, respectively. Terminal half-lives for butorphanol after intravenous and intranasal administrations were 0.68 ± 0.17 h and 1.79 ± 1.43 h. For intranasal administration, absorption half-life and peak plasma concentration were 0.43 ± 0.33 h and 1.95 ± 1.7 ng/mL, respectively. Bioavailability was 54.45 ± 20.09%. Intranasal butorphanol administration in horses is practical, not stressful and well tolerated. Therefore, it might be a substitute to the intravenous route in adult horses
