Benthic iron cycling in a high-oxygen environment: Implications for interpreting the Archean sedimentary iron isotope record

Sediment-redox dynamics in an oligotrophic deep-water lake in Tierra del Fuego: insights from Fe isotopes

For long time in the history of Earth, ferruginous conditions governed the oceans. With the rise of oxygen during the Proterozoic era and the subsequent evolution of living organisms, worldwide deposition of iron formations occurred. These sedimentary units reveal the transition into oxic oceans, passing by local and transitory euxinic conditions, especially in coastal shelves. Constraining the iron cycle and the biogeochemical processes occurring in present and past ferruginous basins helps answering some of the question regarding global oxygenation, the evolution of life and past climate changes. Therefore, Fe speciation and Fe isotopes in both Proterozoic and recent sedimentary records have been widely used to reconstruct past basin dynamics and redox conditions in the sediment-water interface. However, sedimentation and early diagenesis can alter paleoredox proxies and their primary climate signals. In this work, we disentangled alteration processes occurring at the redox front below the sediment-water interface of a ventilated deep-water lake (Lago Fagnano, Argentina/Chile). A sequential extraction protocol was applied to characterize two reactive Fe pools: Fe oxyhydroxides and reduced iron. Subsequently, Fe isotopes were constrained to determine the main processes mobilizing Fe. At the redox front, ferric minerals reach a δ 56Fe value of - 1.3‰ resulting from oxidation of dissolved Fe likely following a Rayleigh distillation effect. Dissolved Fe is produced right below via Fe reduction, as shown by the low ferric Fe content. Our observations delineate a redox cycle and a redox horizon undergoing constant upward migration, initiated by regular sedimentation. However, during events of increased rapid sedimentation (e.g., seismites) this dynamic cycle is interrupted inducing full or partial preservation of the Fe-rich redox front. In such case, oxidation of dissolved Fe is interrupted and can be recycled in ferrous minerals, such as Fe monosulfides and amorphous phases with δ 56Fe values down to - 1.7 ‰. These findings have significant implications for the recording of biogeochemical cycles in the geological past, the use of Fe isotopes in freshwater-lake sediments for paleoclimate studies, and the progress of our knowledge regarding the geochemistry of past oceans.

Highly Siderophile Elements and Coupled Fe-Os Isotope Signatures in the Temagami Iron Formation, Canada: Possible Signatures of Neoarchean Seawater Chemistry and Earth's Oxygenation History

Banded iron formations (BIFs) were deposited before and concurrent with the Great Oxidation Event at ∼2.33 Ga. They provide useful archives that document the transformation of the Precambrian hydrosphere from anoxic to progressively oxygenated conditions. Their formation involves removal of oceanic Fe by either inorganic or biologically promoted Fe²⁺ oxidation, or both. To evaluate depositional settings, elemental sources that affect seawater chemistry, and oxidation pathways, we present the first combined highly siderophile element (HSE) and Fe-Os isotope study for the ∼2.7 Ga Temagami BIF, Abitibi Greenstone Belt, Ontario (Canada). HSE abundances and ¹⁸⁷Os/¹⁸⁸Os ratios show no systematic variation between alternating magnetite and (meta)chert bands of the Temagami BIF. Whereas HSE concentrations mostly resemble modern crustal values, present-day ¹⁸⁷Os/¹⁸⁸Os ratios range from ∼0.17 to ∼10.8. Magnetite samples define a regression line corresponding to an age of 2661 ± 126 Ma. A chondrite-like ¹⁸⁷Os/¹⁸⁸Os initial value is in agreement with earlier studies on Neoarchean marine sediments and is thought to reflect seawater composition, which, unlike modern oceans, is dominated by mantle-like ¹⁸⁷Os inventory most likely derived from deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Our δ⁵⁶Fe data vary from about +0.6‰ to +0.9‰ and define a sawtooth-like pattern between alternating magnetite and (meta)chert layers. Partial oxidation of hydrothermally sourced Fe(II) and a lack of microbially mediated dissimilatory iron reduction provide the most plausible explanation for the positive δ⁵⁶Fe values. Notably, our δ⁵⁶Fe data for Temagami are in accord with trends defined by literature results for other Algoma-type BIFs that were deposited throughout the Archean.

Subglacial meltwater supported aerobic marine habitats during Snowball Earth

The Earth's most severe ice ages interrupted a crucial interval in eukaryotic evolution with widespread ice coverage during the Cryogenian Period (720 to 635 Ma). Aerobic eukaryotes must have survived the "Snowball Earth" glaciations, requiring the persistence of oxygenated marine habitats, yet evidence for these environments is lacking. We examine iron formations within globally distributed Cryogenian glacial successions to reconstruct the redox state of the synglacial oceans. Iron isotope ratios and cerium anomalies from a range of glaciomarine environments reveal pervasive anoxia in the ice-covered oceans but increasing oxidation with proximity to the ice shelf grounding line. We propose that the outwash of subglacial meltwater supplied oxygen to the synglacial oceans, creating glaciomarine oxygen oases. The confluence of oxygen-rich meltwater and iron-rich seawater may have provided sufficient energy to sustain chemosynthetic communities. These processes could have supplied the requisite oxygen and organic carbon source for the survival of early animals and other eukaryotic heterotrophs through these extreme glaciations.
