Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication skills are a cornerstone of practice for dietitians. The field of dietetics is evolving and there is a need to synthesize the available literature on communication skills to improve the effectiveness of patient consultations and inform practitioner development. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aimed to identify the research literature relating to communication skills used in dietetics practice and perceptions and experiences of dietetics students, dietitians, and patients regarding communication skills. METHODS This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and best practice guidance. Five databases (Medline, Embase, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Education Resources Information Center, and PsycInfo), two theses databases, and conference proceedings for 8 dietetics and health professions education associations were systematically searched for research on dietitians' communication skills. This included skills used in dietitian-patient communication, in communication interactions in different employment contexts, and diverse forms of communication (verbal, written, technological) and the views of dietetics students, dietitians, and patients, regarding communication skills. The search had no geographical or time limits. Studies were independently screened by two authors. RESULTS The 70 included studies spanned 45 years and were organized into four thematic categories: importance of communication skills in dietetics practice, development of communication skills, communication skills for dietitian-patient communication, and communication skills for wider dietetics practice. Sixty-five (92.9%) of the studies specifically explored the communication skills used for dietitian-patient consultations, including rapport building, questioning, listening, paraphrasing, and clarifying, whereas skills such as intercultural communication were less researched. CONCLUSIONS There is consensus between patients and dietitians regarding the skills that contribute to effective dietitian-patient communication. Areas less explored in the literature include the skills needed for intercultural communication and those needed for science communication. Greater understanding of the communication skills needed for contemporary nutrition and dietetics practice will guide education strategies for the development of dietitians.

Abstract
Aim The opinion of hemodialysis patients, professionals and family members is rarely considered in the design of a hemodialysis unit. Purpose To know and compare the opinion and preferences of patients, family members and professionals regarding the design of a dialysis unit and the potential activities they believe should be carried out during the session in order to provide architects with real information for the construction of a dialysis center. Patients and Methods Anonymous and voluntary survey in electronic format addressed to patients, relatives and professionals belonging to the 18 hemodialysis centers of the renal foundation and to ALCER and its different delegations, in relation to leisure activities to be carried out in the dialysis center and preferred design of the treatment room. The results obtained between the patient-family group and the professionals were compared. Results We received 331 responses, of which 215 were from patients and family members (65%) and 116 (35%) from professionals. The most represented category among professionals was nursing (53%), followed by assistants (24%) and physicians (12.9%). A higher proportion of patients (66%) preferred rooms in groups of 10-12 patients as opposed to professionals who preferred open-plan rooms (p<0.001). The options that showed the most differences between patients and professionals were chatting with colleagues and intimacy (options most voted by patients/families), versus performing group activities and visibility (professionals). Conclusion The professionals' view of patients' needs does not always coincide with the patients' perception. The inclusion of the perspective of people with kidney disease continues to be a pending issue in which we must improve both patient organizations and professionals, and the opinion of professionals and patients must be included in the design of a dialysis unit and the activities to be developed in it.

Abstract
Rodent control tends to involve methods that cause animal suffering, but little attention has been paid to the animal welfare implications of rodent control. The aim of the current study was to gain insight into the opinions and attitudes of clients of Dutch pest controllers, regarding liminal rodents, rodent control, and rodent welfare. A better understanding of their attitudes may contribute to more ethical rodent management programmes. An online survey among 248 clients of Dutch pest controllers was carried out. Respondents, especially those within the agricultural sector, have a relatively negative attitude towards rats and mice. Respondents in the agricultural subgroup do not consider the welfare of liminal rodents important. They also think that the welfare impact of commonly used control methods is limited, and they have low tolerance levels for the presence of rodents. Respondents from other sectors have a far more positive attitude towards rats and mice, consider their welfare to be of greater importance, have a greater estimation of the welfare impact of control methods and show greater tolerance levels towards rodents. The respondents from the latter subgroup have a similar attitude compared to Dutch pest controllers participating in a previous survey. The findings of the current study firstly provide useful information for the further development and practical implementation of preventive control methods. Secondly, they provide input for a more animal-friendly rodent control and for the development of an assessment framework to support ethical decision-making. Finally, they can be helpful for further research and the communication and co-operation between professional pest controllers and their clients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited understanding of patients' and healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of receiving and delivering dietetic care, respectively. This systematic review of the literature used qualitative synthesis to explore the perceptions and experiences of multiple stakeholders involved in the delivery of nutrition care and dietetic service. METHODS MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, PsycINFO and ProQuest were systematically searched. Study characteristics and perceptions of stakeholders regarding nutrition care services were extracted. Qualitative synthesis was employed and thematic analysis conducted. RESULTS Five themes were identified from 44 studies related to stakeholders' perceptions of dietetic services. Studies included quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods involving patients, families, dietitians and other healthcare professionals. The themes were (1) patients desiring a personalised approach to nutrition care; (2) accessing dietetic service; (3) perceived impact of nutrition care on the patient; (4) relationships between stakeholders; and (5) beliefs about nutrition expertise. Two themes were specific to patients; these were the desire for individualised care and the impact of nutrition care. Within each theme perceptions varied with patients' views often contrasting with those of dietetic service providers. CONCLUSIONS Experiences of dietetic service do not always meet stakeholder expectations which impacts on patient engagement. Seeking stakeholder input is imperative to design dietetic services that engage patients in positive and supportive clinical partnerships.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major public health concern. Optimal management of T2D often requires individuals to make substantial changes to their dietary intake. This research employed a qualitative methodology to examine decision making processes underpinning dietary behaviour change. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted on a purposive sample of 21 Australian adults who had recently consulted a dietitian after being diagnosed with T2D. Data were analysed using theoretical thematic analysis and themes were matched deductively with constructs that underpin motivational, volitional, and implicit processes which exist in common models of behaviour change. Influences on motivation, such as a desire to improve health status and making use of valuable support networks featured in participant narratives. Volitional influences included knowing their limits, dealing with falling off the wagon, and learning how their body responds to food. The themes unlearning habits and limit the availability were identified as underpinning implicit influences on dietary change. Individual differences and emotions were constructs additional to the model that influenced dietary change. These findings contribute to a richer understanding of the subjective experiences of adults with T2D regarding dietary change and highlight the multiple processes that guide their decision making in this context.

Abstract
Although many dietary and lifestyle interventions have been proposed, the concept of total dietary replacement (TDR) to achieve remission of type 2 diabetes in the Gulf region is new. With the high levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the region, offering TDR to patients for weight loss and remission of type 2 diabetes would assist in achieving health outcomes. The aim of the current study was to explore and understand remission of type 2 diabetes and TDR from the perspectives of dietitians to identify challenges and recommend solutions for implementation in Kuwait. A qualitative approach utilizing focus groups was chosen to explore the topic. Purposive sampling was used to gain experiences from a diverse sample across primary, secondary, and tertiary specialized diabetes centers. Discussions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Grounded theory using an iterative approach was applied to analyze the data. Three focus groups with a total of 17 participants achieved data saturation. The sample was varied in terms of workplace and years of experience. The three emerging themes were motivation to use the TDR approach, perceived challenges of TDR, and suggestions to improve and adapt approaches for Kuwait. Dietitians reported that remission of type 2 diabetes is a great motivator for patients to undergo TDR, although various factors were identified that may affect uptake including age, level of education, and social and cultural environment. By understanding dietitians' perspectives, it has provided insight on views regarding the implementation of TDR to achieve remission in Kuwait and how best to tailor approaches by focusing on patient support needs and adopting a flexible approach.

Abstract
Background Older adults represent the largest consumers of health care. It is, therefore, important that they receive adequate patient-centered care to empower them to be proactive in managing their health. Aims This study examined the proportion of older community-dwelling individuals who report receiving patient-centered care during healthcare consultations. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 117 clients of an Australian aged care provider. Clients completed a survey examining their perceptions of whether they received patient-centered care (11-items) from healthcare professionals. Results The mean number of patient-centered care items reported was 8.7 (±3.1). Speaking to the patient with respect was the item most often reported to be patient-centered (94%). Asking patients about treatment goals or expectations (62%) and how involved they would like to be in treatment (67%) were the items least reported to be patient-centered. Conclusion Older adults perceived some important aspects of care were not provided with a patient-centered approach. There is a need to improve healthcare providers' elicitation of older patients' care preferences, enabling patients to determine their level of involvement in their health management.

Abstract
Aim Scientific evidence underpins dietetics practice; however, evidence of how the therapeutic relationship influences outcomes is limited. This integrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic of the therapeutic relationship between clients and dietitians in the individual counselling context by summarising empirical literature into qualitative themes. Methods An electronic literature search of the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsychInfo, Scopus and Web of Science databases was conducted in October 2018 and repeated in February 2021. Studies were included if they explicitly referred to the therapeutic relationship (or associated terms), were based on study data and available in full text. Extracted data were checked by a second researcher and the methodological quality was evaluated independently by two researchers using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. An iterative process of qualitatively coding, categorising and comparing data to examine recurring themes was applied. Results Seventy‐six studies met the inclusion criteria. Five themes were identified which showed the extent and nature of research in this area. Studies revealed the therapeutic relationship: (i) is valued within clinical dietetic practice, (ii) involves complex and multifactorial interactions, (iii) is perceived as having a positive influence, (iv) requires skills training and (v) is embedded in practice models and tools. Conclusion Studies show the therapeutic relationship is a valued and multifactorial component of clinical dietetic practice and is perceived to positively influence the client and dietitian. Observational data are needed to assess the extent to which the strength of the therapeutic relationship might contribute to clients' health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient centred care (PCC) positively influences individual and organisational outcomes. It is important that dietitians working in rehabilitation units are supported to deliver PCC because effective rehabilitation is a collaborative and patient centred process. The objective of this scoping review was to explore the literature available regarding the delivery of dietetic PCC, with patients undergoing rehabilitation in subacute inpatient units. METHODS PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase and Scopus were searched for relevant published literature. Searches for grey and unpublished literature were also completed. Studies were eligible for inclusion and data extraction if they demonstrated the delivery of PCC by qualified dietitians, through individual consultations with adult patients undertaking subacute rehabilitation. RESULTS Overall, 675 studies were identified and six were included in the review. From the literature available, documentation was lacking regarding conceptualisation and delivery of patient centred nutrition care, with only one study providing quality indicators for patient centred dietetic services. Elements of PCC cited were mostly limited to phrases such as, 'individualised care', 'tailored advice', 'follow-up' and 'team collaboration'. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review identified a considerable gap in the literature regarding the delivery of dietetic PCC in subacute rehabilitation units. Contemporary descriptions of PCC show that the delivery of care which is truly patient centred is far more comprehensive than individualising interventions or organising ongoing services. Abstract
Understanding how patients perceive their health and the experience with the dietitian is fundamental to providing patient-centred care. The types of patient reported measures (PRMs) used by outpatient dietitians is unclear. Guidance about use of PRMs for dietitians is also lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesise evidence regarding the use of PRMs by dietitians in the outpatient setting and evaluate the methodological quality of studies evaluating the psychometric properties of PRMs. Eight databases were searched systematically for studies of dietitians working in the outpatient setting and administering a PRM. Forty-four studies were evaluated and described 58 different PRMs. These included direct nutrition related (n = 12 studies), clinical (n = 21 studies), and health-related quality of life PRMs (n = 24 studies); 1 study documented use of a patient-reported experience measure. A large range of PRMs are used by outpatient dietitians. Of the most common PRMs, the majority are administered in similar populations to the original validation study. Dietitians should use a combination of 3 PRMs: a generic health-related quality of life tool, an experience measure, and at least 1 clinical or direct nutrition-related measure. This will enable dietitians to fully capture the impact of their care on patients.

Abstract
Integrated pest management (IPM) involves the control of pests, such as rodents, based on preventive measures and reduced use of chemical control. In view of the number of reported rodent infestations, it appears unlikely that the public has much knowledge about rodents. The objectives of this study were (i) to assess the knowledge and opinions of the public regarding prevention and control of rodent nuisance, and (ii) to assess whether pest controllers have an accurate idea of the knowledge and opinions of the public. The sample contained a total of 314 members of the public and 86 people working in the pest control sector. Responding members of the general public were asked about their knowledge and opinions about IPM in a questionnaire, whereas people working in the pest control sector were asked if they thought the general public had this knowledge and/or opinions. The results show that members of the public have a reasonable level of knowledge regarding preventive measures against rodents, which are part of IPM. People working in the pest control sector underestimate the public's knowledge of preventive measures, such as perimeter exclusion and hygiene measures. Such underestimation may affect their communication with (potential) clients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To (1) explore RDNs' descriptions of patient-centered care (PCC), (2) measure Registered Dietitian Nutritionists' (RDNs) preferences for PCC and (3) identify factors that affect RDNs' PCC preferences. METHODS A survey instrument including two open-ended items exploring RDN descriptions of and experiences with PCC, the Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS), and various factors that could influence PCC (e.g., work intensification, work engagement, and work/demographic characteristics) was expert reviewed, pilot tested, and distributed electronically to 4697 RDNs. A regression analysis was conducted, and two open-ended items were qualitatively analyzed. RESULTS Three themes emerged when RDNs described PCC (n = 375): dietitian/patient relationship (95.7%), organizational influence (64.4%), and interprofessional teams (26.3%). RDNs (n = 318) scored 4.60/6 on the PPOS. Higher levels of work engagement were predictive of higher PPOS scores, and heavier workloads were predictive of lower PPOS scores (p < 0.05). Primary work position also influenced PPOS scores (p<0.05). CONCLUSION RDNs have varying personal definitions of and experiences with PCC, however there are common themes. RDNs generally prefer PCC and score moderately high on the PPOS. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS To strengthen preferences for PCC, managers should create manageable workloads and prioritize work engagement. Continued emphasis on interprofessional collaboration with and organizational promotion of RDNs could improve PCC.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to compare patients' and dietitians' perceptions of patient-centred care (PCC) in dietetic practice. METHODS Participants were as follows: (a) adult patients who had attended ≥1 individual dietetic consultation with an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) working in primary care; and (b) APDs with experience working in primary care. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken using a patient- and dietitian-reported inventory to measure PCC in dietetic practice. The inventory comprised of five previously validated scales: The Communication Assessment Tool; the 9-item Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire; the Patient-Doctor Depth of Relationship Scale; the Schmidt Perception of Nursing Care Scale-Seeing the Individual Patient sub-scale; and the Person-Centred Practice Inventory-Staff -Providing Holistic Care sub-scale. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse participant characteristics and to compute total scores for the five scales. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare median scores between patients and dietitians. RESULTS One-hundred and thirty-three patients and 180 dietitians completed the survey. Patients reported significantly higher scores compared to dietitians for "shared decision-making" (P = 0.004), but significantly lower scores for "providing holistic and individualized care" (P = 0.005), "knowing the patient/dietitian" (P = 0.001) and "caring patient-dietitian relationships" (P =0.009). CONCLUSION This study highlighted potentially important differences between patients' and dietitians' perceptions of PCC and identified key aspects of dietetic care requiring practice improvements. Strategies are needed to bridge gaps between dietitians' and patients' perceptions and enhance PCC in dietetic practice. These findings suggest that dietitians should focus on individualizing nutrition care, gaining a holistic understanding of their patients and knowing/understanding each patient.
