Abstract
AIM To compare cyclic fatigue resistance and bending for three different nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample of 90 NiTi instruments size (25.06) was divided into three groups with 30 files in each: Race Evo files (FKG Dentaire, Switzerland); Tia Tornado Blue files (TiaDent Inc., Texas- USA); One Curve files (Micro-Mega, France). Then each group was subdivided into two groups with 15 files in each; a bending test was performed for one group, and a dynamic cyclic fatigue test at body temperature was performed for the other group. Files fractured by cyclic fatigue were randomly picked from all tested groups for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) (Jeol, Tokyo, Japan). In addition, the test included measuring the broken part of the files tested using (Electronic Micrometre Calliper with LCD Screen, Inch and Millimetre Conversion, Adoric- Taiwan). Data were statistically analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with Tukey-HSD post hoc test. RESULTS It was found that maximum load [gf] was less (meaning more flexible) in the group of Tia Tornado Blue with a statistically significant difference in comparison with Race Evo and One Curve. The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) in the Race Evo group was significantly higher than the groups of One Curve and Tia Tornado Blue. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitation of the study, it could be concluded that Race Evo files were more resistant to cyclic fatigue fracture and Tia Tornado Blue files were more flexible compared to the other tested files.

Abstract
The introduction of nickel-titanium (NiTi) mechanical instruments dramatically changed clinical endodontics over the last few decades. Before NiTi, it was necessary to use more instruments to create an ideal root canal shape, and many approaches, sequences and techniques were developed over the years. Recently, NiTi endodontic instruments have undergone a series of changes brought about by modifications in design, surface treatments, and thermal treatments to improve their root canal preparation outcomes and reduce associated canal preparation risks during root canal treatment. Heat treatment is one of the most fundamental approaches to improving the fatigue resistance and flexibility of NiTi endodontic instruments. In addition, new kinematics have been developed to offer greater safety and efficiency. This narrative review describes the general properties and manufacturing of NiTi instruments, and the mechanical system evolution of NiTi instruments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of different heat treatments and temperatures on the cyclic fatigue resistance of 2Shape instruments (Micro Mega, Besancon, France) with the same design. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 80 2Shape TS1 (#25/.04) and 80 TS2 (#25/.06) files with different heat treatments (no heat-treated, NHT; C-Wire; T-Wire; CM-Wire) were tested at room (25° ± 1 °C) and body (37° ± 1 °C) temperatures in 16-mm stainless steel artificial canal with a curvature of 60° and 5 mm of radius. Files were tested in continuous rotation at 300 rpm using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was expressed in the number of cyclic to fracture (NCF). The phase transformation temperature of each file was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Data were statistically analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni post-hoc test with p < 0.05. RESULTS All CM-Wire TS1 and TS2 files showed higher NCF than the other groups at both temperatures (p < 0.001). C-Wire TS2 showed higher resistance than NHT and T-Wire TS2 (p < 0.001), with no significant differences between the last two. Body temperature significantly decreased NCF of all tested files (p < 0.05) except for NHT and T-Wire TS1. CONCLUSIONS Body temperature negatively affected the cyclic fatigue resistance of C-Wire and CM-Wire TS1 and of all TS2 files compared with room temperature. The CM-Wire instruments exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance of all tested files. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Heat-treated nickel-titanium files can differently perform according to environmental temperature and file dimensions. The CM-Wire 2Shape prototypes displayed the highest flexural resistance in all experimental conditions.

Abstract
We compared the mechanical properties of 2Shape mini TS2 (Micro-Mega, Besançon, France) obtained from 1.0 diameter nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires and 2Shape TS2 from 1.2 diameter nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires differently thermally treated at room and body temperature. We used 120 NiTi TS2 1.0 and TS2 1.2 files made from controlled memory (CM) wire and T-wire (n = 10). Cyclic fatigue resistance was tested by recording the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) at room and body temperatures using a customized testing device. Maximum torque and angle of rotation at failure were recorded, according to ISO 3630-1. Data were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05). The CM-wire files had significantly higher NCFs at both temperatures, independent of wire dimensions. Testing at body temperature negatively affected cyclic fatigue of all files. The 1.0-mm diameter T-wire instruments showed higher NCF than the 1.2-mm diameter, whereas no significant differences emerged between the two CM wires at either temperature. The maximum torque was not significantly different across files. The TS2 CM-wire files showed significantly higher angular rotation to fracture than T-wire files. The TS2 CM-wire prototypes showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance than T-wire prototypes, regardless of wire size, exhibiting suitable torsional properties. Torsional behavior appears to not be affected by NiTi wire size.

Abstract
Objectives This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of One Curve (C wire) and F6 Skytaper (conventional austenite nickel-titanium [NiTi]), and 2 instruments with thermo-mechanically treated NiTi: Protaper Next X2 (M wire) and Hyflex CM (CM wire). Materials and Methods Ten new instruments of each group (size: 0.25 mm, 6% taper in the 3 mm tip region) were tested using a rotary bending machine with a 60° curvature angle and a 5 mm curvature radius, at room temperature. The number of cycles until fracture was recorded. The length of the fractured instruments was measured. The fracture surface of each fragment was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results At 60°, One Curve, F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM had significantly longer fatigue lives than Protaper Next X2 (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the cyclic fatigue lives of One Curve, F6 Skytaper, and Hyflex CM (p > 0.05). SEM images of the fracture surfaces of the different instruments showed typical features of fatigue failure. Conclusions Within the conditions of this study, at 60° and with a 5 mm curvature radius, the cyclic fatigue life of One Curve was not significantly different from those of F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM. The cyclic fatigue lives of these 3 instruments were statistically significantly longer than that of Protaper Next.

Abstract
In the described proof-of-principle experiments, we introduced a novel testing device to investigate how different concurrent torsional loads influence the cyclic fatigue (CF) resistance of a nickel-titanium (NiTi) instrument. The device was designed to test CF resistance of NiTi files with a standardized load on the apical 5 mm; a movable cylinder controlled by a lever provided a uniform real-time load. Thirty-three NiTi instruments 25.04 (F360, Komet, Lemgo, Germany) were rotated until fracture at 30° curvature under three different torsional loads (n = 11 each); Group A: 2.5 Ncm; Group B: 5 Ncm; Group C: 10 Ncm. anova, multiple comparisons Tamhane tests, regression and Kaplan-Meyer analysis were performed to contrast means. Resistance to cyclic fatigue differed significantly among groups (P = 0.0001). Increased torsional loads led to a decrease in time to failure. An inverse correlation (r = -0.721, P = 0.001) was observed between time and torsional load, with higher torsional loads correlated to shorter times to fracture.

Abstract
Background. This study was conducted to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of VDW.ROTATE, TruNatomy Prime, HyFlex CM, and 2Shape nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments in double-curved canals in a simulated clinical environment. Methods. Eighty NiTi files were used for the fatigue testing in stainless steel canals compatible with instrument sizes until fracture occurred (n=20): VDW.ROTATE (04./25#), TruNatomy Prime (04./26#), HyFlex CM (04./25#) and 2Shape TS04./25#( 1). For each instrument, the number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was calculated, and the fractured fragment length (FL) was measured. To verify that the files were fractured due to cyclic fatigue, the fractured surfaces of the files were evaluated under a scanning electron microscope. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Student's t-tests at the %95 confidence level. Results. The failure of the files due to cyclic fatigue was first seen in the apical curvature before the coronal curvature (P<0.05). The highest fatigue resistance was observed in VDW.ROTATE and HyFlex CM files in both curvatures (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the fatigue resistance between the HyFlex CM and VDW.ROTATE files or between the 2Shape and the TruNatomy files (P>0.05). There was no difference in the fractured lengths of the files between the apical and coronal curvatures (P>0.05). Conclusion. In artificial S-shaped root canals, VDW.ROTATE and HyFlex CM files exhibited higher fatigue resistance compared to 2Shape and TruNatomy files.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance at body temperature and phase transformation behaviors of novel Rotate instrument (25.06) with rotating Mtwo (25.06) and reciprocating Reciproc Blue (25.08) and Reciproc (25.08) instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Rotate, Reciproc Blue, Reciproc, and Mtwo instruments free of visible deformations were collected and tested in a static cyclic fatigue test method, which has a ceramic block containing an artificial canal with 60° angle of curvature and a 5-mm radius of curvature at 37 °C (n = 16). All instruments were operated until fracture occurred, and both time to fracture (TF) and the lengths of the fractured fragments were recorded. TF data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Tukey tests and Weibull analysis, and fractured fragment length data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (P < 0.05). Two unused instruments from each brand were also subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis to determine their phase transformation temperatures. RESULTS The Reciproc Blue instruments showed significantly higher TF values and reliability than the other groups (P < 0.05). Rotate instruments exhibited greater cyclic fatigue resistance than the Reciproc and Mtwo instruments (P < 0.05). No significant difference was detected among the fractured fragment lengths (P > 0.05). The lowest austenite finish temperature was exhibited by the Mtwo, which presented a single transformation peak, followed by the Rotate, Reciproc Blue, and Reciproc instruments which all presented two peaks during transformation. CONCLUSIONS Cyclic fatigue resistance of instruments manufactured from thermally treated Blue wire instruments was superior to those of the Mtwo and Reciproc, whereas reciprocating the Blue wire showed the highest resistance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of the novel Rotate instrument with similar instruments manufactured from conventional nickel-titanium, m-wire, and Blue wire at body temperature and reported that Blue-treated instruments exhibited superior cyclic fatigue resistance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of file length on the torsional resistance of nickel-titanium rotary files. METHODS Forty-five new files with a #25 tip size and variable taper for ProTaper Next (PTN; Dentsply Sirona, York PA), ProTaper Gold (PTG, Dentsply Sirona), and HyFlex CM (HCM; Coltene-Whaledent, Allstetten, Switzerland) were divided into 3 subgroups (n = 15) according to the file length (21, 25, and 31 mm). Torsional tests were performed using a custom-made device (AEndoS; DMJ System, Busan, Korea). The maximum torsional load and distortion angle were measured until file fracture occurred. The toughness was calculated using these data. All data were statistically analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance at a confidence level of 95%. One-way analysis of variance and Duncan post hoc comparison were also conducted to assess the difference among the independent variables, shaft length, and file system. RESULTS A statistically significant interaction was observed between the file system and instrument length with respect to the maximum torsional load (P < .05). The 31-mm shaft length of HCM showed higher maximum torsional load than that of the 25- and 21-mm shaft length in the HCM groups (P < .05). Among the instrument systems, PTG showed the significantly highest maximum torsional load followed by PTN and HCM (P < .05). The 31-mm shaft length of PTG showed significantly higher toughness than that of the 21- and 25-mm shaft lengths (P < .05), whereas PTN and HCM did not show any difference in relation to the shaft length. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the instrument with a longer shaft may have higher maximum torsional load or toughness than that with a shorter shaft.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to evaluate the resistance to cyclic fatigue of heat-treated single files used in proper or in reciprocating optimum torque reverse motions. METHODS Ninety-six HyFlex electrical discharge machining (EDM), Reciproc R25 (Rec), WaveOne Primary (WO), and WaveOne Gold (WOG) Primary were used. Resistance to cyclic fatigue was determined by recording time to fracture in a stainless steel artificial canal. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis was performed. Data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc tests at 0.05. RESULTS In both movements, HyFlex EDM showed higher time to fracture than other files (P < 0.0001). Rec showed higher time to fracture than WO (P < 0.0001), while WOG showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance than Rec and WO with both movements (P < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS Reciprocating optimum torque reverse motion improved significantly cyclic fatigue resistance of gold and controlled memory wire single files.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of torsional preloading on the cyclic flexural fatigue resistance of thermally treated NiTi instruments. Material and Methods Ten new instruments New Hyflex CM (HF 30.06; Coltene/Whaladent Inc.), Typhoon CM (TYP 30.06; Clinician's Choice Dental Products) and Vortex Blue (VB 30.06; Dentsply Tulsa Dental) were chosen, based on geometry and specific characteristics of the manufacturing process. The new instruments of each system were tested in a bench device to determine their fatigue resistance through mean value of number of cycles to failure (Nf) (Control Group – CG). Another group of 10 new HF, TYP and VB instruments were submitted to 20 cycles of torsional straining between 0° and 180° (Experimental Group – EG) and then submitted to fatigue until rupture under the same conditions of the CG. Tested instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey’s test (α=.05). Results Higher fatigue resistance was accomplished by HF instruments, followed by VB and TYP (p<0.05). During the torsional preloading, the lowest mean torque value was observed for TYP instruments (p<0.05). The torsional preload caused a significant reduction in the Nf values (p<0.05) of about 20%, 39% and 45% for instruments HF, VB and TYP, respectively. Longitudinal cracks, generated during the torsional preloading, were present in VB files, but were not observed in the CM instruments (HF and TYP). Conclusions In conclusion, the flexural fatigue resistance of thermally treated instruments is diminished after cyclic torsional loading.

Abstract
Introduction: This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance (CFR) of new instruments manufactured by heat-treated nickel-titanium wire. Methods and Materials: Ninety-six new instruments from HyFlex CM (HF), Edge File (EF), Pro Design S (PDS/L) and Mtwo (MT) (20/0.06 and 25/0.06) (n=12) systems were evaluated. A stainless steel device was used and time and number of cycles to fracture (NCF) were observed. Fragments were measured and fracture surface was evaluated using scanning electron microscope (SEM). ANOVA and Tukey’s tests were applied with the level of significance set at 0.05. Results: PDS 20/0.06 and PDL 25/0.06 instruments presented the highest CFR. MT 20/0.06 and MT 25/0.06 showed the lowest CFR (P<0.05). The length of fragments was similar for 25/0.06 instruments and HF presented the highest one for 20/0.06 instruments. SEM analyses showed morphology suggestive of ductile fracture. Conclusion: Heat treatment increased resistance to cyclic fatigue differently for each type of instrument. PDS 20/0.06 and PDL 25/0.06 present higher cyclic fatigue resistance.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the mechanical properties and metallurgical characteristics of the M3 Rotary and M3 Pro Gold files (United Dental). Materials and Methods One hundred and sixty new M3 Rotary and M3 Pro Gold files (sizes 20/0.04 and 25/0.04) were used. Torque and angle of rotation at failure (n = 20) were measured according to ISO 3630-1. Cyclic fatigue resistance was tested by measuring the number of cycles to failure in an artificial stainless steel canal (60° angle of curvature and a 5-mm radius). The metallurgical characteristics were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls test. Results Comparing the same size of the 2 different instruments, cyclic fatigue resistance was significantly higher in the M3 Pro Gold files than in the M3 Rotary files (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the files in the maximum torque load, while a significantly higher angular rotation to fracture was observed for M3 Pro Gold (p < 0.05). In the DSC analysis, the M3 Pro Gold files showed one prominent peak on the heating curve and 2 prominent peaks on the cooling curve. In contrast, the M3 Rotary files showed 1 small peak on the heating curve and 1 small peak on the cooling curve. Conclusions The M3 Pro Gold files showed greater flexibility and angular rotation than the M3 Rotary files, without decrement of their torque resistance. The superior flexibility of M3 Pro Gold files can be attributed to their martensite phase.

Abstract
Efficient endodontic treatment demands thorough debridement of the root canal system with minimal procedural errors. The inherent weakness of nickel-titanium alloys is their unexpected breakage. Modifications in the design, manufacturing, thermomechanical and surface treatment of alloys and advancements in movement kinetics have shown to improve the fatigue properties of the alloys, reducing the incidence of separation. This review enlightens the impact of these factors on fatigue properties of the alloy.

Abstract
Objectives To determine the incidence of crack formation and propagation in apical root dentin after retreatment procedures performed using ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), Mtwo-R, ProTaper Next (PTN), and Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) systems. Materials and Methods The study consisted of 120 extracted mandibular premolars. One millimeter from the apex of each tooth was ground perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth, and the apical surface was polished. Twenty teeth served as the negative control group. One hundred teeth were prepared, obturated, and then divided into 5 retreatment groups. The retreatment procedures were performed using the following files: PTR, Mtwo-R, PTN, TFA, and hand files. After filling material removal, apical enlargement was done using apical size 0.50 mm ProTaper Universal (PTU), Mtwo, PTN, TFA, and hand files. Digital images of the apical root surfaces were recorded before preparation, after preparation, after obturation, after filling removal, and after apical enlargement using a stereomicroscope. The images were then inspected for the presence of new apical cracks and crack propagation. Data were analyzed with χ2 tests using SPSS 21.0 software. Results New cracks and crack propagation occurred in all the experimental groups during the retreatment process. Nickel-titanium rotary file systems caused significantly more apical crack formation and propagation than the hand files. The PTU system caused significantly more apical cracks than the other groups after the apical enlargement stage. Conclusions This study showed that retreatment procedures and apical enlargement after the use of retreatment files can cause crack formation and propagation in apical dentin.

Abstract
Objective: Different single-file instruments and kinematics have been introduced on the market. It is important to know the cyclic fatigue performance of these instruments in these new kinematics such as reciprocation of Optimum Torque Reverse (OTR) motion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to cyclic fatigue of F6 SkyTaper and OneShape used in continuous rotation (proper rotation) or in reciprocating OTR motion. Methods: A total of forty-eight nickel-titanium files were tested. Twenty-four instruments of both brands were divided into two groups (n=12) on the basis of the motion tested: continuous rotation (group 1) or reciprocating OTR motion (group 2). Resistance to cyclic fatigue was determined by recording time to fracture (TtF) in a stainless steel artificial canal with a 60° angle of curvature and 5 mm radius of curvature. Data were analysed by two-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Bonferroni tests for multiple comparisons with P<0.05 as the level of significance. Results: F6 SkyTaper showed higher TtF compared with OneShape, both in continuous and in OTR motion (P<0.0001). The two tested instruments showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance in reciprocating OTR motion than continuous rotation (P<0.0001). Conclusion: OTR motion significantly improves cyclic fatigue resistance of the tested instruments. In addition, F6 SkyTaper showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance than OneShape in both motions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the influence of clinical use, in vivo, on the torsional behavior of Reciproc and WaveOne instruments considering the possibility that they degraded with use. MATERIAL AND METHODS Diameter at each millimeter, pitch length, and area at 3 mm from the tip were determined for both types of instruments. Twenty-four instruments, size 25, 0.08 taper, of each system were divided into two groups (n=12 each): Control Group (CG), in which new Reciproc (RC) and WaveOne Primary (WO) instruments were tested in torsion until rupture based on ISO 3630-1; and Experimental Group (EG), in which each new instrument was clinically used to clean and shape the root canals of one molar. After clinical use, the instruments were analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopy and subsequently tested in torsion until fracture. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance at a=.05. RESULTS WO instruments showed significantly higher mean values of cross-sectional area A3 (P=0.000) and smaller pitch lengths than RC instruments with no statistically significant differences in the diameter at D3 (P=0.521). No significant differences in torsional resistance between the RC and WO new instruments (P=0.134) were found. The clinical use resulted in a tendency of reduction in the maximum torque of the analyzed instruments but no statistically significant difference was observed between them (P=0.327). During the preparation of the root canals, two fractured RC instruments and longitudinal and transversal cracks in RC and WO instruments were observed through SEM analysis. CONCLUSION After clinical use, no statistically significant reduction in the torsional resistance was observed.

Abstract
Introduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the shaping and centering ability of ProTaper Next (PTN; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and WaveOne Classic systems (Dentsply Maillefer) in simulated root canals. Methods. Forty J-shaped canals in resin blocks were assigned to two groups (n = 20 for each group). Photographic method was used to record pre- and postinstrumentation images. After superimposition, centering and shaping ability were recorded at 9 different levels from the apex using the software Autocad 2013 (Autodesk Inc., San Rafael, USA). Results. Shaping procedures with ProTaper Next resulted in a lower amount of resin removed at each reference point level. In addition, the pattern of centering ability improved after the use of ProTaper Next in 8 of 9 measurement points. Conclusions. Within the limitations of this study, shaping procedures with ProTaper Next instruments demonstrated a lower amount of resin removed and a better centering ability than WaveOne Classic system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the influence of operator experience on: shaping and centering ability, mean preparation time and presence of canal aberrations of ProTaper Universal and WaveOne systems on simulated root canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty S-shaped canals in resin blocks were assigned to four groups (n=15 for each group). Group1 (Experienced operator, ProTaper), Group2 (Experienced operator, WaveOne), Group3 (Inexperienced operator, ProTaper), Group4 (Inexperienced operator, WaveOne). Photographic method was used to record pre- and post-instrumentations images. After superimposition, it has been evaluated presence of canal aberrations and differences in shaping and centering ability between groups. RESULTS WaveOne system produced a lower amount of canal aberrations both in the hand of expert than inexpert operators. However, a WaveOne instrument breakage occurred in the hands of an inexperienced operator. No differences have been found in the evaluation of shaping ability with both systematics. Operator's experience doesn't influence the shaping ability of ProTaper and WaveOne systems. CONCLUSION Experience factor could influence the centering ability in the use of both the systematics. However, WaveOne Primary reduce the mean preparation time and the presence of canal aberrations.
