Association between maternal and infant screen time with child growth and development: A longitudinal study

Child and mother characteristics associated with 6-month weight gain for infants and toddlers during 6 to 36 months

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of childhood obesity in the U.S. has increased, likely due to decreased physical activity, increased sedentary behaviour and unhealthy diets. Little is known about the relationships between these factors and weight gain in those under the age of three.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to understand the longitudinal associations of weight gain over 6-month intervals with child and parent characteristics as children develop from 6 to 36 months.

METHODS

Mother and infant data were collected at 6-month intervals from 6 to 36 months. Weight (kg) was the primary outcome variable, and potential explanatory variables included child and parent characteristics, physical activity, motor development, diet and sleep. Structural equation modelling was used to assess associations between explanatory variables and 6-month weight gain.

RESULTS

Weight increased ~1 kg per 6-month interval (p < 0.001) from 6 to 36 months. Childcare outside of the home at 12 months was associated with 0.272 kg (p = 0.002) greater weight gain at 18 months, while children's physical activity was associated with 0.228 kg (per 2 SD, p = 0.051) less weight gain during the same time period. Mother's TV and screen media use (0.102 kg per hour/day, p = 0.046) and child's intake of high-energy beverages at 18 months (0.387 kg, p = 0.037) were both associated with greater weight gain at 24 months.

CONCLUSION

Childcare, physical activity, screen media use and high-energy beverage consumption might affect weight gain at different time points in early childhood. These insights can inform efforts to prevent excessive weight gain and childhood obesity effectively.

Maternal 24-h movement patterns across pregnancy and postpartum: The LIFE-Moms consortium

Objective

Time spent among the 24-h movement behaviors (physical activity [PA], sleep, sedentary behavior [SB]) in the perinatal period is important for maternal and child health. We described changes to 24-h movement behaviors and behavior guideline attainment during pregnancy and postpartum and identified correlates of behavior changes.

Methods

This secondary data analysis included the standard of care group (n = 439) from the U.S.-based Lifestyle Interventions For Expectant Moms (LIFE-Moms) consortium, including persons with overweight and obesity. Wrist-worn accelerometry was used to measure movement behaviors early (9-15 weeks) and late (35-36 weeks) pregnancy, and ∼ 1-year postpartum. Sleep and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were compared to adult and pregnancy-specific guidelines, respectively. SB was classified into quartiles. PA and SB context were quantified using questionnaires. Mixed models were used to examine changes in behaviors and guidelines and identify correlates.

Results

Participants were 31.3 ± 3.5 years, 53.5 % were Black or Hispanic, and 45.1 % had overweight. Sleep duration decreased across time, but participants consistently met the guideline (range: 85.0-93.6 %). SB increased during pregnancy and decreased postpartum, while light PA and MVPA followed the inverse pattern. Participants met slightly fewer guidelines late pregnancy (1.2 ± 0.7 guidelines) but more postpartum (1.7 ± 0.8 guidelines) than early pregnancy (1.4 ± 0.8 guidelines). Black or Hispanic race/ethnicity, higher pregravid body mass index, and non-day work-shift (e.g., night-shift) were identified correlates of lower guideline adherence and varying PA and SB context.

Conclusion

Perinatal interventions should consider strategies to prevent SB increase and sustain MVPA to promote guideline adherence.

Familial context influences media usage in 0- to 4-year old children

Background

The use of digital media (e.g., smartphones, tablets, etc.) and the Internet have become omnipresent for every age group and are part of children's and parents' everyday life. Focusing on young children, the availability of media devices, their use as well as associated problems (e.g., in social, emotional and motor development) have increased in recent years. Of particular interest for prevention of these problems in early childhood is the relationship between the familial context (parental digital media use, Problematic Internet Use, school graduation, presence of siblings) and the digital media use of infants and toddlers. The present study's goal was to describe media usage in 0-4-year-old children and to identify the potential relationship between familial context factors and child media usage.

Methods

The sample included N = 3,035 children aged 0 to 3;11 years (M = 17.37 months, SD = 13.68; 49.13% female). Recruitment took place within the framework of a restandardization study for a German developmental test. The parents of the participants answered a questionnaire on socio-demographics, on child media use, and on parental media use. Questions on parental media use included the full version of the Short Compulsive Internet Use Scale (S-CIUS).

Results

Significant increases in media usage times with child age were identified, but no significant gender differences. A multiple regression analysis revealed that increasing maternal total media usage time, a higher parental S-CIUS score, lower school leaving certificate of both mother and father, and increasing child's age led to higher child media usage time. Having siblings diminished young children's media usage in this study. Having more than one child and having children aged over a year was associated with a higher parental S-CIUS score.

Conclusion

Family factors such as maternal media use time, Problematic Internet Use and lower school graduation are significantly associated with young children's digital media use. Parents should be aware of their personal influence on their children's media use which might be due their role in terms of model learning.
