Abstract
The aim of this study was to clinically validate an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool for automatic segmentation of the mandibular incisive canal (MIC) on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), enabling prevention and detection of iatrogenic implant-related nerve injuries. Patient records from University Hospitals Leuven were screened for CBCT related to implant surgery cases with nerve injuries. CBCT scans were imported into Virtual Patient Creator for canal segmentation and 3D model generation. Two oral radiologists compared the AI-segmented canals with respective CBCT images. Five observers then performed canal identification and injury detection (present/absent) and reported their confidence level on a five-point Likert scale. Ten patient cases were assessed (eight female, two male; age 49-81 years). The AI-based tool enabled clear visualization of bilateral MIC in both pre- and postoperative images, revealing implant-canal relationships consistent with recorded post-implant pain or neural disturbance. For preoperative assessment, the AI-based tool significantly improved incisive canal detection (by 25%; P = 0.025) and observer confidence (by 8%; P = 0.038). The AI-based tool proved to be clinically useful to enable bilateral MIC visualization on CBCT images. Through canal segmentation with integrated 3D modelling, preoperative canal detection and the experts' confidence level were significantly improved.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the influence of different denture-bearing conditions on the masticatory function and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of complete denture wearers. METHODS Sixty edentulous patients were selected and allocated into two groups according to the American College of Prosthodontics' (ACP) classification: non-atrophic (NAT) (Classes I and II) (n = 24) and atrophic (AT) (Classes III and IV) (n = 36). All patients received new complete dentures (CDs). The objective variables (masticatory performance and swallowing threshold) were assessed as well as the PROMs (oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-EDENT), patient satisfaction) and quality of the prosthesis, at baseline (using the old CD) and after 4 months new prostheses use. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test followed by the Generalized Equations Estimation (GEE), linear regression and Chi-square test. RESULTS Higher masticatory performance was observed in the NAT group (p < .05) for both time points, baseline and after 4 months. However, compared to baseline, both groups showed significant masticatory improvement after 4 months (p < .05). Satisfaction and overall quality of life improved after 4 months with no difference between groups (p > .05). Regarding the quality of the CD, baseline results were significantly (p < .05) lower in the AT group, but after 4 months, no significant differences were found between groups and in intragroup analysis (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS The denture-bearing conditions seems to impact masticatory function, but the PROMs are barely affected.

Abstract
Several impression techniques and theories have been developed for implant-retained overdentures, each with its own set of advantages and limitations. This study aimed to assess the chewing efficiency of mandibular implant-retained overdentures fabricated using three distinct impression techniques (mucofunctional, selective, and minimal pressure impression techniques). Twenty-six patients with complete edentulism free from any oral or systemic disease were selected to participate in the study. Three complete mandibular implant-retained overdentures were constructed for each patient, and grouped into three groups according to the impression technique employed in overdenture construction; Group A: Patients were treated by mandibular implant-retained overdenture fabricated using mucofunctional impression technique; Group B: Patients were treated by mandibular implant-retained overdenture fabricated using selective pressure impression technique; Group C: Patients were treated by mandibular implant-retained overdenture fabricated using minimal pressure impression technique. Chewing efficiency was evaluated for each patient with the implant-retained mandibular overdenture after three months of prosthesis insertion as an adaptation period. The data were collected, tabulated, and statistically analyzed. Results indicated that mandibular implant-retained overdentures made using the mucofunctional impression technique showed higher mean values of chewing efficiency parameters than mandibular overdentures made using selective and minimal pressure impression techniques. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the mucofunctional impression technique may be effective in improving the chewing efficiency of mandibular implant-retained overdentures more than minimal or selective pressure impression techniques.

Abstract
Edentulism (total tooth loss) can be managed with four possible options: no prosthetic replacement, conventional complete dentures, implant-retained overdentures (removable), or implant-supported bridgework (fixed). Selection of these choices is influenced by social, medical, anatomical, technical, and economic factors. The care team involved in the decision-making process (be it patients, clinicians and occasionally commissioners of services) should be aware of the different treatment options and their potential impact on the patient's quality of life (QoL). The cost effectiveness of this impact can also be evaluated. Knowledge of the life-long sequelae of edentulism will also help practitioners guide patients in their treatment planning decisions when they may be approaching an edentulous state, preparing them for the challenges that may lie ahead. This paper aims to address the impact that edentulism has on QoL and the treatment options, focusing on the patient perspective.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this article is to evaluate to the masticatory function performance and Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in implant-retained overdenture compared with different implant number placements in the edentulous mandible. METHODS From 2013 to 2015, each patients received 3 implants (iSy-Implant, Camlog, Wimsheim, Germany) in intraforaminal mandible (34, 41/31, 44). After operation, inserted implants were gradually loaded and incorporated into an overdenture with a self-aligning attachment system (Locator abutments) in 3 + 3 + 3 months. Five checked points were performed chewing cycle test with multicolored chewing gum and OHIP-G14 questionnaire and a sum score questionnaire as following: pre-operation, one implant load (41/31), two implants loaded (33,43), three implants loaded and 1-year follow up. RESULT A total of 10 patients with 30 implants were placed, the survival rate of the implants was 100% within 1-year follow-up. Regarding the masticatory function analysis, for the higher number of chewing cycles, the higher mixing rate was observed. After 1 year, the inter-mixing rate without significant changes was found compared to the time after three implants were loaded with attachment system. The mean value of OHIP-G14 was 30.4 preoperatively, 21.1 after loading the first locator, 10.7 after loading two locator abutments, and 3.2 after loading all three locator abutments. After 1 year, OHIP-G14 was 2.6 without significantly changed. The mean of the sum score was 15.5 preoperatively, 27.8 after activation of the first locator, 39.4 after activation of two locators, 46.2 after activation of all three locators, and 47.3 after 1 year. An increase of 0.7 sum score units per time point was observed. No significance was detectable, analogous to OHIP-G14, compared to the time of activation of all three locator setups (p-value = 0.22). CONCLUSIONS A significant improvement in masticatory function performance and OHRQoL was evaluated with the increasing number of implants with locator attachment in edentulous mandible. With the investigation of the OHIP-G14 and sum score, the results of patient report outcome might be associated with the increase in the number of implants.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of combining mechanical (ultrasonic) and chemical cleaning (using denture cleaners) on the surface roughness of silicone or acrylic soft relining materials. The silicone soft relining material with the lowest Shore A hardness and a acrylic soft relining material routinely used in Japan were selected. Four groups were established based on type of treatment: immersion in water (W); ultrasonic cleaning in tap water (U); ultrasonic cleaning in a hypochlorous acid denture cleanser (HU); or ultrasonic cleaning in an acidic denture cleanser (AU). Following the tests, surface roughness was determined as the arithmetic mean height of the surface (Sa) and maximum height (Sz). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Bonferroni correction for a multiple comparison. No significant difference was observed in the Sa or Sz of the silicone soft relining material between the 4 groups. Significant differences were observed in the Sa of the acrylic soft relining material between Groups W and HU (p=0.008) and between Groups W and AU (p=0.008), but no significant differences in the Sz among the 4 groups. Combining U with AU or U with HU yielded no increase in the surface roughness of the silicon soft relining material. The surface roughness of the acrylic soft relining material showed an increase, however, with the combination treatments used.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the efficacy of a demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) in decreasing the initial inflammatory response of the gingiva and facilitating the repair and regeneration of soft tissue in alveolar ridge preservation. Methods This clinical study employed a split-mouth design. Fourteen patients with a total of forty-four sites underwent extraction and alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) procedures. A Bilaterally symmetrical extraction operation were conducted on the premolars of each patient. The experimental group received DDM as a graft material for ARP, while the control group underwent natural healing. Within the first month postoperatively, the pain condition, color, and swelling status of the extraction sites were initially assessed at different time points Subsequently, measurements were taken for buccal gingival margin height, buccal-lingual width, extraction socket contour, and the extraction socket area and healing rate were digitally measured. Additionally, Alcian Blue staining was used for histological evaluation of the content during alveolar socket healing. Results Both groups experienced uneventful healing, with no adverse reactions observed at any of the extraction sites. The differences in VAS pain scores between the two groups postoperatively were not statistically significant. In the early stage of gingival tissue healing (3 days postoperatively), there were statistically significant differences in gingival condition and buccal gingival margin height between the two groups. In the later stage of gingival tissue healing (7, 14, and 30 days postoperatively), there were statistically significant differences in buccal-lingual width, extraction socket healing area, and healing rate between the two groups. Furthermore, the histological results from Alcian Blue staining suggested that the experimental group may play a significant role in promoting gingival tissue healing, possibly by regulating inflammatory responses when compared to the control group. Conclusion The application of DDM in alveolar ridge preservation has been found to diminish initial gingival inflammation after tooth extraction. Additionally, it has shown the ability to accelerate early gingival soft tissue healing and preserve its anatomical contour. Clinical trial registration chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2100050650.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to compare the responses of 30 denture wearers' opinions concerning the efficiency of two types of adhesives and estimate their satisfaction level using denture adhesive (DA). Materials and methods 30 completely edentulous patients were divided randomly into two groups. Each group received one type of DAs (SECURE, COREGA) and was instructed to follow the same sequence of application. Each type of adhesive was used for seven days, as recommended by the manufacturer. The patients were requested to fill out a questionnaire considering their opinion and satisfaction regarding denture retention, chewing ability and duration of adhesives. Results The majority of patients stated that the prosthetic DAs enhanced their retention, chewing, stability, and efficiency of dentures. There was a significant difference in patient satisfaction regarding denture retention in the mandible and the duration of the adhesive in the mouth. Concerning ability of the patient to remove the adhesive from their mouth, the taste, or the retention of the maxillary denture, there were no statistically significant differences between the two DAs. Conclusions The results of the present study showed that overall satisfaction of complete denture wearers was high significantly different when a herbal DA was applied. This includes improvements in their duration of retention effectiveness, greater stability, and retention of the lower mandibular dentures. To use DA effectively, patients should be oriented by their dentists. Patient education is essential to provide them with a better understanding of both the appropriate technique for applying DA and the possible outcome they may experience.

Abstract
Purpose The involvement of oral mucosa cells in mechanical stress-induced bone resorption is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cyclic pressure-induced cytokines from oral mucosal cells (human gingival fibroblasts: hGFs) on osteoclast activity in vitro.Methods Cyclic pressure at 50 kPa, which represents high physiologic occlusal force of dentures on the molar area, was applied to hGFs. NFAT-reporter stable RAW264.7 preosteoclasts (NFAT/Luc-RAW cells) were cultured in conditioned medium collected from hGF cultures under cyclic pressure or static conditions. NFAT activity and osteoclast formation were determined by luciferase reporter assay and TRAP staining, respectively. Cyclic pressure-induced cytokines in hGF culture were detected by ELISA, real-time RT-PCR, and cytokine array analyses.Results Conditioned media from hGFs treated with 48 hours of cyclic pressure significantly induced NFAT activity and increased multinucleated osteoclast formation. Furthermore, the cyclic pressure significantly increased the bone resorption activity of RAW264.7 cells. Cyclic pressure significantly increased the expression of major inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β/IL-1β, IL-6/IL-6, IL-8/IL-8 and MCP-1/CCL2 in hGFs compared to hGFs cultured under static conditions, and it suppressed osteoprotegerin (OPG/OPG) expression. A cytokine array detected 12 cyclic pressure-induced candidates. Among them, IL-8, decorin, MCP-1 and ferritin increased, whereas IL-28A and PDGF-BB decreased, NFAT activation of NFAT/Luc-RAW cells.Conclusions These results suggest that cyclic pressure-induced cytokines from hGFs promote osteoclastogenesis, possibly including up-regulation of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and MCP-1, and down-regulation of OPG. These findings introduce the possible involvement of GFs in mechanical stress-induced alveolar ridge resorption, such as in denture wearers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A great number of patients are completely satisfied with a regular denture, on the other hand, numerous patients are still not satisfied with their denture functions despite proper denture manufacture in relation to prosthetic standards. AIM To estimate the parameters of satisfaction for patients to improve the health care quality of patients and evaluate the effect of the adaptation period. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 136 patients who participated in this study were patients with complete dentures (CD), after placement of the CD, the patients were asked some questions (about esthetics, phonetics, comfort, quality of fit, and the masticatory efficiency) and the satisfaction of patients was evaluated by using Likert's scale, then recorded four readings, first at the placement visit, second after 1 month, third after 45 days, and last after 2 months. RESULTS The female patients' satisfaction related to phonetics was about 37.8% at the placement visit, but about 91.2% after 2 months; the male patients' satisfaction related to phonetics was about 44% at the placement visit, then 94.6% after 2 months; the female patients' satisfaction as related to esthetics was about 56.6% at the placement visit, but was about 89.8% after 2 months; the male patients' satisfaction as related to esthetics was about 68% at the placement visit, but about 89.4% after 2 months. CONCLUSION The satisfaction of the patient with their CD is affected by many factors such as phonetics, esthetics, comfort levels, the quality of fitness of the denture, and the mastication. The differences between gender in satisfaction in all parameters were non-significant, that is, p > 0.001. The adaptation period has an effect on the satisfaction rate of the completely edentulous patient with their CD.

Abstract
The capacity of a nanostructured multicomponent material composed of Zn-substituted monetite, amorphous calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite and silica gel (MSi) to promote vertical bone augmentation was compared with anorganic bovine bone (ABB) and synthetic β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). The relation between biological behavior and physicochemical properties of the materials was also studied. The in vivo study was conducted in a vertical bone augmentation model in rabbit calvaria for 10 weeks. Significant differences in the biological behavior of the materials were observed. MSi showed significantly higher bone regeneration (39%) than ABB and β-TCP (24%). The filled cylinder volume was similar in MSi (92%) and ABB (91%) and significantly lower in β-TCP (81%) implants. In addition, β-TCP showed the highest amount of non-osteointegrated particles (17%). MSi was superior to the control materials because it maintains the volume of the defect almost full, with the highest bone formation, the lowest number of remaining particles, which are almost fully osteointegrated and having the lowest amount of connective tissue. Besides, the bone formed was mature, with broad trabeculae, high vascularization and osteogenic activity. MSi resorbs gradually over time with an evident increment of the porosity and simultaneous colonization for vascularized new bone. In addition, the osteoinductive behavior of MSi material was evidenced.

Abstract
A convenience sample of 154 edentulous patients referred for implant provision at a Regional National Health Service Dental Hospital in the North West of England were identified. The cephalometric radiographs that were taken as part of the patient baseline investigation were assessed. Digital tracing was used to measure the anterior maxillary and mandibular bone height and ridge angle with respect to the maxillary and mandibular planes. The mean height of the bone in the maxilla was found to be 14 mm, and the mean ridge angle for the anterior maxillary residual ridge is 104°. The mean height of bone in the mandible was 18 mm, while the mean ridge angle for the anterior mandibular residual ridge was 77°. Using the Cawood and Howell classification demonstrated that class VI mandibles were the most common. The cross-sectional shape of the mandible varied, with the triangular shape most common. Although there was adequate bone stock for implant placement in these cases, the mandibular residual ridge resorption presents a lingual inclination to the residual bone. The limited residual ridge position and inclination would dictate that conventional implant placement could be challenging.

Abstract
Purpose To clarify the rate of posterior residual ridge resorption (PRRR) in different denture treatments and the factors that can affect PRRR.Study selection A bibliographical electronic search was conducted on MeSH, Web of Science, and Ovid databases. Hand searching was also conducted. Longitudinal studies recording the average rate of PRRR in the mandible were included. The effect size was calculated based on the mean rate of PRRR with standard deviation and group size. The random-effects analysis was used to perform meta-analyses across qualified studies.Results A total of 2245 eligible studies were collected from the MeSH, Web of Science, and Ovid databases and hand searching. In the end, 19 studies met the inclusion criteria and were extracted. The average rate of PRRR in different mandibular denture treatments was assessed in this systematic review. The mean combined effect size was -1.05 ± 0.5 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -3.18-1.08) between four-implant overdentures and two-implant overdentures. The combined effect size was -0.01 ± 0.22 (95% CI: -0.93-0.82) between complete dentures and two-implant overdentures. Body mass index, number of dentures used, denture wearing habit, impression technique, artificial tooth material, and peri-implant bone resorption showed no significant effect on the rate of PRRR. Gender, denture material, and relining frequency showed a significant effect on the rate of PRRR.Conclusions This review summarized different average rates of PRRR in mandibular denture treatments. Meta-analyses have reported that four-implant overdenture treatments can lower the rate of PRRR compared to two-implant overdenture treatments. However, there was no significant difference in the treatment effect between the complete denture and two-implant overdenture treatments.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is little evidence as to what is the appropriate replacement interval for complete dentures. The aim of this study was to determine the longevity of complete dentures in a population of publicly insured adults across a 20 year observation period. METHODS The records of 187,227 Australian adults who accessed complete denture treatment through public clinics between 2000-2019 were assessed. Time to denture replacement was modelled using a Weibull regression and a competing risk regression to adjust for the competing risk of mortality. RESULTS Over a 20-year period, 27.7% of dentures were replaced, with a mean longevity of 6.06 (SD: 3.93) years. Pairs of complete dentures had greater mean longevity than single dentures (p<0.001). Approximately 4.6% of dentures provided were replaced within 2 years; 18.4% were replaced between 2 and 10 years and 4.6% of replacements occurred after 10 years.Over 70% of adults who received a complete denture did not replace it during the observation period. Dentures provided by denturists had higher levels of replacement than those made by dentists. Participants over 80 years of age had lower rates of denture replacement. Low socio-economic status and living outside a major city were associated with reduced rates of replacement for dentures under 10 years of age. CONCLUSION Complete dentures were commonly replaced after 6 years of service. Pairs of dentures lasted longer than single dentures.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to compare the masticatory ability subjectively between ball and Cendres+Métaux Locator (CM-LOC) attachment for a single implant retained mandibular overdenture throughout a 24-month follow-up period. Materials and Methods Eighty completely edentulous patients were recruited. All patients received new complete dentures, and masticatory ability was recorded using a questionnaire (baseline record). All patients received a single implant in the midline of the completely edentulous mandible. After 3-month healing period, patients were randomized using sealed envelopes into two groups: ball or CM-LOC attachment. The same masticatory ability questionnaire was used to record masticatory ability for both groups after 2 weeks of pickup and 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-, and 24-month follow-up. Comparison between the study groups was done using Mann–Whitney U test for independent samples. Two-sided P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results The mean masticatory scores improved for both attachments, with no statistically significant difference between them throughout the 24-month follow-up. The CM-LOC attachment group showed a greater improvement change in masticatory ability after 6- and 12-month follow-up (−12.47 ± 12.006, −11.46 ± 14.625; P=0.826), while the ball attachment group showed a slight improvement after the 24-month follow-up (−11.72 ± 12.368, −10.88 ± 11.963; P=0.778). Conclusion Single implant retained mandibular overdenture improved masticatory ability subjectively with no significant difference between both attachments used although the ball attachment showed better masticatory ability scores after 24-month follow-up.

Abstract
PURPOSE Removable dentures are a reasonable option for prosthetic treatment. However, continuous residual ridge resorption and reline procedures are inevitable owing to the strong pressure exerted on the mucosa or inappropriate pressure distribution. This study aimed to elucidate the association between the gonial angle on orthopantomogram (GAO) with occlusal force and reline frequency in removable partial denture wearers. METHODS Participants were patients who had previously received removable partial denture treatment for a free-end defect. Age, sex, number of remaining teeth, remaining opposing teeth, and occlusal support were investigated. GAO was measured using panoramic radiographs. The mean relining interval was calculated as the mean number of days between denture insertion and the first relining or subsequent relining. The association between the mean relining interval and each factor was investigated. RESULTS Sixty-five subjects (33 females) were analyzed. The median value of the mean relining interval was 533.3 days, and the median GAO was 123º. There was a significant positive correlation between the mean relining interval and GAO (rs = 0.335). The number of remaining opposing teeth and occlusal support exhibited weak negative correlations with mean relining interval (rs = -0.187 and -0.214, respectively). Multivariate analysis using a generalized linear model showed that GAO was a significant explanatory variable for the m ean relining interval. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, GAO was found GAO was found to contribute to the increased frequency of relining due to ridge resorption in patients with a small GAO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is lack of reliable predictors for success of conventional complete denture (CCD) therapy, which in turn might affect the effectiveness of subsequent implant-retained overdenture (IOD) therapy. PURPOSE To investigate relationships between digitally obtained geometrical mandibular residual ridge measures and perceived CCD-stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS 30 CCD wearing patients (67.9 ± 7.0 years) for whom a new set of CCDs was advised, were treated with new CCDs. Digitalized mandibular gypsum models were measured using the Geomagic Studio 2013 software. Data were obtained for (1) height, width, and cross-section surface area of the residual ridge at different locations (midline, premolar, and anterior edge of retromolar pad) and (2) denture base surface area. Scatter plots and multivariate regression analyses were used to investigate associations between the geometric data and denture base surface area, and correlated with denture stability scores (Spearman rank test). RESULTS Scatter plots showed that best model fit for denture base surface area was mean ridge height (R2 = 0.906). Multivariate regression showed that height at premolar location (p = 0.001) had largest effect on denture base surface area (R2 = 0.796). Ridge morphology variables, except width at midline location, were significantly correlated with CCD-stability (p-values <0.05). CCD-stability was significantly correlated with denture base surface area (p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSION Residual ridge height at premolar location was most predictive for denture base surface area and perceived CCD-stability.

Abstract
This study aims to simulate the stress distributions of oral mucosa under different soft denture liners using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The Young's modulus and viscosity of denture liners composed of silicone (Sofreliner Super Soft and Sofreliner Tough Medium, Tokuyama Dental), acrylic (Vertex Soft, Vertex Dental), and a tissue conditioner (Visco-gel, Dentsply Sirona) were measured using a creep meter. A numerical simulation model that represents the stress distribution of oral mucosa under soft denture liners was also developed using the SPH method. The oral mucosa was divided into four regions: A) buccal border, B) buccal shelf, C) crest of residual ridge, and D) lingual border. For each region, the von Mises stress (hereafter, referred to as "Mises stress") of the oral mucosa was calculated. Based on a creep test, Sofreliner Super Soft and Sofreliner Tough Medium silicone liners showed an elastic behavior, whereas Vertex Soft acrylic liner and Visco-gel tissue conditioner showed a viscoelastic behavior. In addition, Sofreliner Super Soft and Visco-gel exhibited a large strain. The numerical simulation revealed that the mean Mises stress was the highest in region A and lowest in region D. Vertex Soft acrylic liners resulted in a statistically lower Mises stress on the oral mucosa compared to the other three soft denture liners. Different soft denture liner materials lead to different stress distributions on the oral mucosa. The acrylic soft denture liners cause a lower Mises stress on the oral mucosa than the silicon soft denture liners. This suggests that acrylic soft denture liners would be more effective for manufacturing painless dentures than silicone soft denture liners.

Abstract
Taiwan transitioned to an aged society in 2018. Appropriate dental treatment is important for elderly individuals. Previously, reconstruction of the dentition was thought to help regain chewing function. However, concerns of the elderly population, such as decline in learning ability and saliva secretion, complicate dental reconstruction. Overlooking the special needs of elderly individuals may lead to impaired chewing function, resulting in nutritional imbalances and increased burden on the digestive tract, causing more health disorders. For the elderly population, treatment must be aimed at restoring as much chewing function as possible with minimal changes. Additionally, regular oral hygiene care, proper design of fixed partial dentures, and implant placement greatly reduce the difficulty in adapting to a new prosthesis. These measures allow us to provide better quality of life for elderly individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The period of functional adaptation to a new conventional complete denture embraces many transitory issues, and this period is directly related to the rehabilitation success. OBJECTIVE This clinical trial evaluated the influence of the height of mandibular ridge on the masticatory function of complete denture (CD) wearers during the adaptation period. METHODOLOGY A total of 28 individuals wearing new CDs (NR, n=14, normal mandibular ridges, 64±12.5 years, 9 female; RR, n=14, resorbed mandibular ridges, 69±6.8 years, 9 female) were assessed at 24 hours, 30 days, three months and six months after the insertion of the CDs for masticatory performance (MP, sieves method), satisfaction with CDs (questionnaire) and maximum occlusal bite force (MOBF) (gnatodynamometer). The classification of the mandibular ridges followed the Kapur index. Data of MP and MOBF were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and satisfaction with CDs was analyzed by Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), α=.05. RESULTS Participants with NR presented better masticatory performance (p=.000 - NR 30.25±9.93%, RR 12.41±7.17%), general satisfaction (p=.047), retention of mandibular denture (p=.001), chewing ability (p=.037), and comfort of wearing a mandibular denture (p=.000). Regardless of the mandibular ridge, MP (p=.000) was higher at three (21.26±12.07%) and six months (24.25±12.26%) in comparison to 24 hours (18.09±10.89%), the MOBF (p=.000) was higher at three months (78.50±6.49 N) compared to 24 hours (57.34±5.55 N) and 30 days (62.72±5.97 N), and the comfort of wearing a mandibular denture (p=.002) at three months (1.61 ± 0.07) was greater than 24 hours (1.29±0.10) and 30 days (1.36±10). CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that the participants with NR have higher MP and satisfaction with their CD, regardless of the follow-up period after the insertion of the new CD. After subjects received the CD, a period of 3 months was necessary for achieving better achievement MOBF, MP, and self-perceived comfort with the mandibular denture, regardless of the height of the mandibular ridge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Residual ridge resorption impairs patients' satisfaction with complete denture (CD) treatment, but influence of bone resorption on the aesthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients still remains unclear due to insufficient quantitative investigations. OBJECTIVES To quantitatively evaluate the effects of residual ridge resorption on facial aesthetic reconstruction in elderly edentulous patients. METHODS According to radiological examination, a total of 19 edentulous subjects were categorised into two groups, atrophic patients (APs) and non-atrophic patients (NAPs). Before CD treatment and 3 months after treatment, patients were asked to complete the Orofacial Esthetic Scale (OES). The changes in facial appearance were measured by 3D stereophotogrammetry, and the facial parameters of two groups were compared. RESULTS The patient's subjective satisfaction of oro-facial aesthetics and 3D objective assessment of facial appearance improved after CD treatment. Subnasale-gnathion (Sn-Gn) significantly increased from 60.13 ± 3.91 mm to 62.27 ± 3.82 mm. After rehabilitation, glabella-subnasale (G-Sn)/Sn-Gn, nasolabial (Cm-Sn-Ls) and mentolabial (Li-Sm-Pg) significantly decreased and were closer to normal values. Moreover, the subtraction value between G-Sn/Sn-Gn and normal value before treatment of APs and NAPs was 14.47 ± 8.04% and 6.94 ± 3.69%, respectively (P = .026), while after treatment, the values decreased to 10.61 ± 6.33% and 3.86 ± 2.31% (P = .013), respectively. CONCLUSION The increased volume of lips and cheeks played an important role in the facial aesthetic reconstruction of edentulous patients. NAPs tended to have more attractive faces after CD treatment, as their facial profile parameters (G-Sn/Sn-Gn and Cm-Sn-Ls) were closer to normal Chinese with well-balanced faces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare one- vs two-step impression procedures for the provision of conventional complete dentures (CCDs) for edentulous individuals with severe mandibular resorption, in terms of (1) masticatory performance and ability; (2) satisfaction with mandibular CCDs; and (3) post-delivery adjustments. METHODS Fifty-two patients requiring maxillary + mandibular CCDs were randomly divided into two parallel arms according to the impression method of the mandibular ridge: (SI) single impression with stock trays (irreversible hydrocolloid); (TI) two-step impression in custom trays, with border molding (impression compound) followed by the impression itself (polyether). Mastication performance was evaluated by a colorimetric test, whereas patients answered questions on masticatory ability and satisfaction with mandibular CCDs (100-mm visual analogue scale). The number of post-delivery sessions for adjustments were also quantified. Outcomes were assessed at 3 and 6 months after delivery. RESULTS The masticatory performance was similar for both groups, regardless of time (3 months, P = 0.62; 6 months, P = 0.61). No significant difference was found for patient-reported (P > 0.05), i.e. masticatory ability (general ease of chewing and quality of grinding food; ability to chew specific foods), general satisfaction with the mandibular CCD (general satisfaction, comfort, aesthetics, ability to speak and to perform correct cleaning, retention and stability). Both methods resulted in a similar number of post-delivery adjustment sessions [SI: 3.8 (1.7); TI: 3.2 (1.4); P = 0.09]. CONCLUSIONS Compared to a traditional approach, CCDs obtained from a single impression achieve similar masticatory performance/ability and patient satisfaction, even in patients with severely reabsorbed mandibular ridge. Both methods demand the same amount of post-delivery adjustment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE A simplified impression technique which eliminates the secondary impression can provide CCDs of good clinical quality, which influences the OHRQoL, and satisfaction in the same extent they would by a two-step procedure, even for patients with severely reabsorbed mandibular ridges (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02339194).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the maximum bite force (MBF), masticatory performance and oral sensory function (OSF) of frail edentulous elderly. The correlation of MBF with maximum grip strength (MGS) was also assessed. METHODS Twenty edentulous elderly [10 with and 10 without the frailty phenotype (FP)] were selected to participate in this case-control study. The FP was diagnosed using the criteria of Fried et al., which consider weight loss, exhaustion, physical activity level, weakness and slowness to the evaluation. All volunteers received new complete dentures (CDs) to standardise the occlusal status, and after 2 months of use with no complaint, all variables were assessed. MBF was measured by pressure sensors positioned bilaterally on the first artificial molars. Masticatory performance was assessed using the sieving method and was expressed as the median particle size (X50 ) of Optocal after 40 masticatory cycles. OSF was evaluated using the oral stereognosis test, and MGS was measured using a dynamometer. Groups were compared using one-way analysis of variance. The Pearson coefficient of correlation between MBF and MGS was calculated. RESULTS Frail elderly people showed reduced MBF (P = 0.0431) and larger X50 values (P = 0.0053) than did non-frail elders, while OSF did not differ between the groups. MBF had a moderate positive correlation with MGS (r = 0.690, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Frail elderly had reduced MBF and impaired mastication. On the other hand, OSF does not seem to be affected by frailty. MBF was moderately correlated with MGS.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The masticatory ability of complete denture (CD) wearers can be evaluated subjectively and objectively. Although an objective measure reflects a person's ability to masticate food, it is rarely used in clinical practice. Moreover, the factors associated with subjective and objective masticatory ability of CD wearers remain unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to identify subjective and objective measures that better reflect the masticatory ability of CD wearers and to investigate their associating factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS Masticatory ability was evaluated in 130 CD wearers by using subjective and objective measures. The subjective indicators were oral impact on eating and denture satisfaction based on eating or mastication ability. Masticatory performance was objectively measured by using a median peanut particle size. The maximum occlusal force, number, and area of occlusal contacts were determined from a pressure-sensitive sheet. CD retention and stability were classified into acceptable and unacceptable denture quality following the CU-modified Kapur criteria. The occlusal pattern and oral conditions were examined and recorded. Intraexaminer reliability in determining CD quality and oral condition was shown by a Kappa score of 0.90 to 0.95. Multivariable linear and logistic regressions were performed to analyze the associations between CD quality, maximum occlusal force, and masticatory ability. The Spearman correlation was used to determine the association between subjective and objective measures. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) between subjective and objective measures were calculated. RESULTS Unacceptable CD quality was significantly associated with oral impact on eating, eating dissatisfaction, and larger peanut particle size (P<.001). Peanut particle size increased with lower maximum occlusal force, which was related to fewer occlusal contacts and the female sex. The highest to lowest adjusted R2 values were related to masticatory performance, oral impact on eating, and eating satisfaction models. Among participants with unacceptable CD quality, 16% had higher masticatory performance, 25%, had no oral impact on eating, and 33% reported eating satisfaction. The sensitivity and specificity values of subjective measures in predicting lower masticatory performance were approximately recorded at 74% and 90%, respectively, whereas PPV and NPV were at 90% and 77%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS CD retention and stability impact objective and subjective masticatory ability. Objective masticatory performance is the best measure for evaluating the masticatory ability of CD wearers, followed by oral impact on eating and eating satisfaction. A 3.6-mm peanut particle size is suggested as a cutoff value for identifying CD wearers with impaired masticatory ability.

METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty completely edentulous elders were assigned to two groups: frail and nonfrail (n = 10/each). MA was evaluated using a visual analogue scale. OHRQoL was assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-Edent). Variables were evaluated with volunteers wearing their old and unsatisfactory CDs. Then, a new set of CDs was manufactured and all outcomes were reassessed 2 months after the insertion. Data were analyzed by repeated measures' analyses of variance and Tukey tests. MA for lettuce and peanuts was improved (P < .05) for the frail group after new CD insertion. Psychological discomfort and handicap OHIP-Edent domain improved (P < .05) for both groups after prosthetic treatment. Before treatment, controls reported greater psychological discomfort than the frail group. Meanwhile, the handicap domain score of frail patients improved to a level similar to that of the nonfrail group after treatment. Regardless of frailty, elders showed better MA scores for most food types after treatment and decreased OHIP-Edent domain values. CONCLUSION Self-reported MA and OHRQoL of frail elderly people were greatly improved after new CD use.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although implant-retained mandibular overdentures (IMOs) provide functional benefits, the influence of the vertical facial pattern (FP) and the anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy (ASD) on the masticatory function and patient-centered outcomes during the transition to IMOs is still uncertain. PURPOSE The purpose of this interventional clinical study was to evaluate the influence of the FP and ASD on the masticatory function, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and satisfaction of completely edentulous patients before and after transition to IMOs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cephalometric analysis was performed on 42 participants before treatment. Ricketts analysis was used to classify the FP, and the maxillomandibular relationship to the base of the skull determined the ASD. Masticatory performance (MP) and swallowing threshold (ST) test results were evaluated by the multiple sieve method by using artificial test food (Optocal cubes) to determine the median particle size (×50), homogenization index (B), and masticatory efficiency based on sieves 5.6 (ME: 5.6) and 2.8 (ME: 2.8). OHRQoL and satisfaction were evaluated by using the Dental Impact on Daily Living questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mixed-effects linear regression models to estimate the effect of time, FP, ASD, age, and sex on MP, ST, and OHRQoL. RESULTS The MP, ST, OHRQoL, and satisfaction improved significantly after IMO loading, irrespective of FP and ASD. However, MP outcomes were most negatively affected mainly among dolichofacial (B and ME: 2.8), class II, and class III (×50, B, and ME: 2.8) participants. The ST test showed that class II participants still showed inferior ×50 values and performed a lower number of cycles than class I and class III participants. Women presented reduced masticatory function for all MP and ST outcomes and reported lower coefficients for appearance and general performance domains than men. CONCLUSIONS The MP test detected more subtle improvements than the ST test, especially in class III participants. The class II participants benefited the least from the IMO installation according to the ST test. The IMO treatment improved the OHRQoL and satisfaction of edentulous patients, irrespective of the FP or ASD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of age, gender, mandibular bone height, previous experience with prostheses, and methods for denture fabrication on masticatory performance of complete denture (CD) wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this study, 29 individuals treated with CDs fabricated by simplified or conventional methods had their masticatory performance assessed 4 weeks after the prostheses' adjustment and control, using the sieve method and almonds as a natural food test. Experimental variables related to age, gender, and previous use of complete dentures were collected from dental records. Panoramic digital radiographs were used to determine mandibular bone height according to the criteria described by the American College of Prosthodontists. Data on masticatory performance were assessed using t-test for independent samples to make comparison between simplified and conventional methods, and a multiple linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of age, gender, previous experience with CDs, and mandibular bone height on masticatory performance using SPSS software with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS There was no significant influence regarding the method for CD fabrication (p = 0.92), age (p = 0.36), mandibular bone height (p = 0.37), and previous experience with prostheses (p = 0.15) on masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients presented lower masticatory performance than male (p = 0.04) patients did. CONCLUSIONS Considering the limitations of this study, it was concluded that gender might be considered a risk factor for masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients demonstrated reduced masticatory performance in comparison to male patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Narrow diameter implants (NDI) are recommended to retain mandibular overdentures (MOs) in cases of limited bone thickness. It is necessary to evaluate the clinical behavior of NDI as MO retainers connected to a new screwless locking taper abutments, their predictability and maintenance problems. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the peri-implant tissue behavior around NDI and the performance of locking taper stud abutments as MO retainers. METHODOLOGY Thirty patients (average age of 67.5 years) received 2 NDI implants (2.9 × 10 mm) loaded after 12 weeks using Equator stud attachments. The plaque index (PI), calculus index (CI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and implant stability quotient (ISQ) were monitored during osseointegration at 0, 4, 8, and 12 weeks and postloading at 24, 48, and 60 weeks. The marginal bone level (MBL) and bone level changes (BLC) were determined at baseline and 60 weeks. RESULTS The cumulative success rate was 83.3%. The PI oscillated in the first 24 weeks and decreased from 48 weeks onward, while the CI score showed significantly higher values at week 8 (22%). The GI also peaked at week 8 (18.6%) and decreased from week 12 onward. The PD decreased gradually over time, but no significant differences were found between weeks 8 and 12. The ISQ decreased significantly between 0 and 12 weeks. After MO loading, the ISQ values increased linearly and significantly between 12 and 24, 24 and 48, and 48 and 60 weeks and reached values similar to the primary stability after 60 weeks [56.1(42.0-65.3)]. No significant MBL was observed at 60 weeks, with an average BLC of -0.06 ± 0.64 mm. CONCLUSION NDI connected to locking taper Equator attachments showed a stable clinical behavior as an MO retainer for edentulous patients with clinical mandibular atrophy.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate residual ridge resorption (RRR) of anterior and posterior maxillary and mandibular edentulous ridges, in patients treated with mandibular implant overdentures (IOD) and compare with conventional complete denture (CD) wearers, and to determine at each location, the association of RRR with the occlusal forces distribution and other patients' variables. The anterior and posterior RRR of IOD (six males, 17 females) and CD (12 males, 11 females) groups were determined using baseline and follow-up dental panaromic radiographs (DPT) (mean intervals 4 ± 1·8 years). The bone ratios were calculated using proportional area: anatomic to fixed reference areas and mean difference of ratios between the intervals determined RRR. The ridge locations included anterior and posterior maxillary and posterior mandibular arches. The T-Scan III digital occlusal system was used to record anterior and posterior percentage occlusal force (%OF) distributions. There were significant differences in anterior and posterior %OF between treatment groups. Two-way anova showed RRR was significant for arch locations (P = 0·005), treatment group (IOD versus CD) (P = 0·001), however, no significant interaction (P = 0·799). Multivariate regression analyses showed significant association between RRR and %OF at anterior maxilla (P = 0·000) and posterior mandible (P = 0·023) and for treatment groups at posterior maxilla (P = 0·033) and mandibular areas (P = 0·021). Resorption was observed in IOD compared to CD groups, with 8·5% chance of less resorption in former and 7·8% in the latter location. Depending on arch location, ridge resorption at various locations was associated with occlusal force distribution and/or treatment groups (implant prostheses or conventional complete dentures).

Abstract
The prevalence of prosthodontic treatment has been well recognized, and the need is continuously increasing with the ageing population. While the oral mucosa plays a critical role in the treatment outcome, the associated biomechanics is not yet fully understood. Using the literature available, this paper provides a critical review on four aspects of mucosal biomechanics, including static, dynamic, volumetric and interactive responses, which are interpreted by its elasticity, viscosity/permeability, apparent Poisson's ratio and friction coefficient, respectively. Both empirical studies and numerical models are analysed and compared to gain anatomical and physiological insights. Furthermore, the clinical applications of such biomechanical knowledge on the mucosa are explored to address some critical concerns, including stimuli for tissue remodelling (interstitial hydrostatic pressure), pressure–pain thresholds, tissue displaceability and residual bone resorption. Through this review, the state of the art in mucosal biomechanics and their clinical implications are discussed for future research interests, including clinical applications, computational modelling, design optimization and prosthetic fabrication.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present article describes a novel clinical procedure for mandibular overdentures supported by two freestanding implants loaded immediately after placement via computer-guided flapless surgery. METHODS A conventional acrylic complete denture was fabricated, and CT scans obtained using the denture as a radiographic guide. Preoperative computer-assisted planning was performed using commercially available software, permitting simulation of implant placement at optimal positions. Using simulation data, a surgical guide was manufactured and used during surgery. The surgical guide was placed and local anesthesia injected for drilling of anchor pins to stabilize the surgical guide. The drilling protocol for each osteotomy site achieved an insertion torque greater than 35 Ncm. Immediately after implant placement, a keeper of the magnetic attachment was connected to each implant, and the magnetic assembly incorporated into the denture. The mucosal surface of the denture around the magnet was relieved to avoid excessive tissue pressure. The patients were instructed to wear the denture in place continually for the following 7 days. After six months of healing and follow-up, a final denture with a metal framework may be fabricated if necessary. CONCLUSION A novel treatment protocol for immediately loaded implant-supported mandibular overdentures is described in detail. The protocol ensures secure precise and safe implant placement, successful osseointegration, and immediate improvement of oral health-related quality of life for patients with unstable complete dentures.

Abstract
Retrospective studies on restoring the patients with complete edentulism have reported a variety of complications, including the excessive wear and fracture of the acrylic resin teeth. Approaches to slow the process of wear include the use of porcelain teeth or altering the occlusal surface of acrylic resin teeth with amalgam or gold. Two 1-piece fixed zirconia implant frameworks masked with gingival porcelain and stained anatomically contoured first and second molars and individual ceramic crowns were used to restore both arches to optimum function and esthetics. This clinical report describes the steps for one method of providing the fixed prosthetic needs of the patients who is edentulous.

Abstract
Nocturnal bruxing is a parafunctional activity of the masticatory system that may create problems for removable dental prosthesis (RDP) users. Such problems may include root fractures, increased mobility of abutment teeth, excessive wear of resin denture teeth, minor connector bending, or denture base cracking. This clinical report presents an occlusal device fabricated for an RDP patient. The device used existing ERA attachments for added retention designed with the intended purpose of protecting the definitive fixed and RDP from damage due to nocturnal bruxing activity and providing for even distribution of parafunctional forces.

Abstract
The main reasons for loss of autotransplanted teeth are different from those involved in natural teeth loss. The aim of this study was to investigate which procedures were employed to treat spaces vacated when autotransplanted teeth were lost. Participating dentists were requested to provide information on transplantations they had undertaken. A total of 614 teeth in 552 patients (37 dentists) ranging in age from 17 to 79 years (mean age: 44.1 years) were examined. A total of 102 transplanted teeth were lost during the observation period. Procedures for treatment of spaces vacated were not influenced by main reason for transplanted tooth loss. The procedure used to treat depended on the original prosthodontic treatment of the transplanted teeth. For single crowns, the spaces were left empty (33.9%) or replaced by bridge work (30.5%), implants (20.3%), or dentures (10.2%). For single crowns in the upper and lower second molar regions, the spaces were usually left empty (upper 100%, lower 71.4%), while for those in the upper and lower first molar regions, the spaces were often replaced by bridge work (upper 41.7%, lower 50.0%). For bridge abutments, spaces were replaced by dentures (42.9%), implants (33.3%), or left empty (14.3%), and in the lower second molar region, they were mostly replaced by implants (5 cases, 41.7%). For most denture abutment cases, the spaces were replaced by dentures (88.9%). During the survival period of the transplanted teeth, the masticatory burden on the other teeth is reduced and the adjacent teeth are supported by the transplanted tooth. Even if transplanted teeth are eventually lost, traditional procedures can be performed to fill the vacated space.
