Abstract
Background Physical durability of long-lasting-insecticidal nets (LLIN) is an important aspect of the effectiveness of LLIN as a malaria prevention tool, but there is limited data on performance across locations and products. This secondary analysis of data from the VectorWorks project from 10 sites in four African countries involving six LLIN brands provides such data. Methods A total of 4672 campaign nets from 1976 households were recruited into prospective cohort studies 2–6 months after distribution through campaigns and followed for 3 years in Mozambique, Nigeria, DRC and Zanzibar, Tanzania. LLIN products included two 100 denier polyester LLIN (DawaPlus® 2.0, PermaNet® 2.0) distributed in five sites and four 150 denier polyethylene LLIN (Royal Sentry®, MAGNet®, DuraNet©, Olyset™ Net) distributed in five sites. Primary outcome was LLIN survival in serviceable condition and median survival in years. Net use environment and net care variables were collected during four household surveys. Determinants of physical durability were explored by survival analysis and Cox regression models with risk of failure starting with the first hanging of the net. Results Definite outcomes for physical durability were obtained for 75% of study nets. After 31 to 37 months survival in serviceable condition varied between sites by 63 percentage-points, from 17 to 80%. Median survival varied by 3.7 years, from 1.6 to 5.3 years. Similar magnitude of variation was seen for polyethylene and polyester LLIN and for the same brand. Cox regression showed increasing net care attitude in combination with exposure to net related messages to be the strongest explanatory variable of survival. However, differences between countries also remained significant. In contrast, no difference was seen for LLIN material types. Conclusions Variation in net use environment and net care is the main reason for differences in the physical durability of LLIN products in different locations. While some of these factors have been identified to work across countries, other factors remain poorly defined and further investigation is needed in this area. Grouping LLIN brands by similar textile characteristics, such as material or yarn strength, is insufficient to distinguish LLIN product performance suggesting a more differentiated, composite metric is needed.

Abstract
In a randomized, prospective, 6-month-long field study in a rural area of Iran, the wash resistances of 200 nets (40 PermaNet, 40 Yorkool and 40 A-Z nets), that their manufacturers claimed be long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN), were compared with those of 40 nets conventionally treated with deltamethrin (using K-O Tab tablets). All the nets were kept in routine domestic use and subjected to standardized hand-washing at 2-week intervals. Wild-caught or laboratory-reared Anopheles stephensi were used for the bio-assays of insecticidal activity. The regular washing and domestic use led to reductions in the insecticidal activities of all the treated nets after 6 months. Although the PermaNet nets showed the smallest reduction, they were not significantly better than the conventionally treated nets, which still showed acceptable insecticidal activity after 6 months. The PermaNet and A-Z nets both performed significantly better than the Yorkool nets, which were slightly but not significantly worse than the conventionally treated nets. In questionnaire-based interviews, the local householders were found to wash their own (non-study) nets at median and mean frequencies of every 2 and 2.1 weeks, respectively. In conclusion, the PermaNet nets showed better wash resistance than any of the other commercial nets, and were the only commercial nets tested that truly appeared to be LLIN. There still appears to be scope, however, for the impregnation, and thus the wash-resistance, of even the PermaNet nets to be improved.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the efficacy and wash resistance of three types of commercial, deltamethrin-treated nets (PermaNet, Yorkool and A-Z nets) - that their manufacturers claimed to be long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) - and those of nets conventionally treated with deltamethrin, at either 23-27 mg/m(2) (using one K-O Tab tablet/net) or 46-54 mg/m(2) (using two K-O Tab tablets/net). The nets were tested unwashed or after being washed, by hand or machine, five or 15 times. After each wash, the nets were dried vertically on a line, in the shade, for 8 h. Insecticidal activity was assessed, using two types of bio-assay and wild-caught female Anopheles stephensi, as mean median knock-down times and as mortality 24 h after a 3-min exposure. For each type of nets tested, the insecticidal activity of the unwashed nets was greater than that of the nets washed five washes, and that of the nets washed five times was greater than that of the nets washed 15 times, with the latter decline considerably greater than the former. The pattern of decrease, however, differed with net type. The PermaNet and A-Z nets generally had the highest insecticidal activity, and, overall, the Yorkool nets did not perform significantly better than the conventional nets treated with 23-27 mg deltamethrin/m(2). Although washing with detergents can clearly remove insecticide from the fibres of all types of treated nets, the consequent loss of activity varies with net type. After 15 washes, the PermaNet nets showed higher insecticidal activity than any other net type but there is still scope for the manufacturer of the PermaNet nets to improve wash resistance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) are now standard for the prevention of malaria. However, only products with recommendation for public use from the World Health Organization should be used and this evaluation includes the assessment of net effectiveness after three years of field use. Results for one of the polyester-based products, Interceptor is presented. METHODS In five villages, 190 LLIN and 90 nets conventionally treated with the insecticide alpha-cypermethrin at 25 mg/m2 were distributed randomly and used by the families. Following a baseline household survey a net survey was carried out every six months to capture use, washing habits and physical condition of the nets. Randomly selected nets were collected after 6, 12, 24, 36 and 42 months and tested for remaining insecticide content and ability to knock-down and kill malaria transmitting mosquitoes. RESULTS During the three and a half years of observation only 16 nets were lost to follow-up resulting in an estimated attrition rate of 12% after three and 20/% after 3.5 years. Nets were used regularly and washed on average 1.5 times per year. After three and a half years 29% of the nets were still in good condition while 13% were seriously torn with no difference between the LLIN and control nets. The conventionally treated nets quickly lost insecticide and after 24 months only 7% of the original dose remained (1.6 mg/m2). Baseline median concentration of alpha-cypermethrin for LLIN was 194.5 mg/m2 or 97% of the target dose with between and within net variation of 11% and 4% respectively (relative standard deviation). On the LLIN 73.8 mg/m2 alpha-cypermethrin remained after three years of use and 56.2 mg/m2 after three and a half and 94% and 81% of the LLIN still had > 15 mg/m2 left respectively. Optimal effectiveness in bio-assays (≥ 95% 60 minute knock-down or ≥ 80% 24 hour mortality) was found in 83% of the sampled LLIN after three and 71% after three and a half years. CONCLUSIONS Under conditions in Western Uganda the tested long-lasting insecticidal net Interceptor fulfilled the criteria for phase III of WHO evaluations and, based on preliminary criteria of the useful life, this product is estimated to last on average between three and four years.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the efficacy and wash resistance of several commercial deltamethrin-treated nets (PermaNet, from factory (PN-F) and market (PN-M), Yorkool (Y) and AZ net) that were claimed by the manufacturers to be Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLITNs), compared to ITNs conventionally treated with deltamethrin (23-27 mg/m(2), using one K-O Tab tablet (KO) per net). Montpellier washing technique was used for washing the pieces of the nets. Insecticidal activity was assessed on dried pieces of nets after 0, 2, 5, 8, 11, 15, 18 and 21 washes, using two types of bioassay (mean median knock down times and mortality 24 h after a 3-min exposure) and reared female Anopheles stephensi. To evaluate the effect of heat on diffusion of insecticide from inside of the nets to the surface of them, some Permanet nets were heated. For all the types of nets tested the median knock down time (MKDT) increased approximately linearly with number of washes. The slopes of the lines (increase of MKDT per wash) were low with the PN-F and PN-M, intermediate with Y and equally high with KO and AZ. No significant differences can be claimed with the 3-min exposure tests. The slopes of the regression lines did not differ significantly between the heated and unheated samples. It is concluded that diffusion at ambient temperature is fast enough to rapidly compensate for the loss of insecticide on the surface with no need to artificially stimulate diffusion by heating.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate a simple and inexpensive colorimetric test to measure the amount of cyanopyrethroid insecticide residue from filter paper exposed to mosquito net surfaces. METHOD The net sampling protocol and colorimetric test (NetTest) were evaluated for deltamethrin-impregnated PermaNet 2.0 by comparison with high-performance liquid chromatographic assays and mosquito mortality (WHO Cone Test). CONCLUSION The observed correlation between the amount of deltamethrin adsorbed onto the filter paper and the entire amount of deltamethrin per unit area of net material was good: 0.967, five assays. The relationship between the surface levels of deltamethrin determined by the colorimetric test and the 'gold standard' mosquito bioassay reveals a relatively accurate field test with a sensitivity of 91.4% and specificity if 85.4% (76 samplings from 19 nets).

Abstract
Background In order to evaluate whether criteria for LLIN field performance (phase III) set by the WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme are met, first and second generations of one of these products, PermaNet®, a polyester net using the coating technology were tested. Methods A randomized, double blinded study design was used comparing LLIN to conventionally treated nets and following LLIN for three years under regular household use in rural conditions. Primary outcome measures were deltamethrin residue and bioassay performance (60 minute knock-down and 24 hour mortality after a three minute exposure) using a strain of Anopheles gambiae s.s. sensitive to pyrethroid insecticides. Results Baseline concentration of deltamethrin was within targets for all net types but was rapidly lost in conventionally treated nets and first generation PermaNet® with median of 0.7 and 2.5 mg/m2 after six months respectively. In contrast, second generation PermaNet® retained insecticide well and had 41.5% of baseline dose after 36 months (28.7 mg/m2). Similarly, vector mortality and knockdown dropped to 18% and 70% respectively for first generation LLIN after six months but remained high (88.5% and 97.8% respectively) for second generation PermaNet® after 36 months of follow up at which time 90.0% of nets had either a knockdown rate ≥ 95% or mortality rate ≥ 80%. Conclusion Second generation PermaNet® showed excellent results after three years of field use and fulfilled the WHOPES criteria for LLIN. Loss of insecticide on LLIN using coating technology under field conditions was far more influenced by factors associated with handling rather than washing.

Abstract
Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) impregnated with pyrethroid insecticides have become one of the most promising interventions to prevent malaria in highly endemic areas. Despite the large body of experience documenting their health impact and the best way to distribute them, some key practical issues remain unresolved. For example, the duration of effective life of a net under field conditions is unknown. The most important factor affecting net effectiveness is the issue of regular re-treatment with insecticide. Washing is also an important determinant of insecticide longevity in the field. Trials were undertaken to provide some essential field information on ITNs within the site of an extended ITN programme in the Morogoro region of Tanzania. It was found that 45% of all nets were in bad condition (defined as more than seven large holes). It is concluded that an effective 'life' for polyester nets is 2-3 years. Further, two-thirds of the 20% of nets that were reported as having been re-treated within the last 12 months had less than 5 mg/m(2) of insecticide. According to the World Health Organization this is insufficient to be effective. People reported that they washed their nets four to seven times per year, usually with soap. Observations showed that such washing does not harm the nets and that the wash-water was unlikely to have an impact on the environment. Finally, bioassays were carried out with Anopheles gambiae on polyester netting with 0.5, 2, 5, 10 and 30 mg/m(2) of deltamethrin, alphacypermethrin and lambdacyhalothrin to assess the effectiveness of pyrethroids. The results confirmed that even with low insecticide concentrations, nets can still provide partial protection.

Abstract
The effectiveness of insecticide-treated materials (ITMs) for malaria control is reduced by washing them. This research in Colombia and Bolivia investigated the resistance of different insecticide formulations and, in particular, a commercially available impregnated bednet (PermaNet) which provides chemical protection for the insecticide. The fabrics studied were all polyester; the pyrethroids used for impregnation were deltamethrin (tablet and suspension concentrate both at 25 mg/m2 target dose), lambdacyhalothrin (capsule suspension at 15 mg/m2; laboratory study only), alphacypermethrin (suspension concentrate at 40 mg/m2) and, in the case of PermaNet, deltamethrin (55 mg/m2). The indicator of wash resistance was Anopheles spp. mortality (using the bioassay cone method) before and after different numbers and intensities of washing. When the fabrics were washed under controlled conditions, gently with water and a bar of soap, the wash resistance of all formulations was good (100% Anopheles mortality after 3 washes). However, when the impregnated nets were soaked for 30-60 min and washed with soap powder and tap water by local women in the usual way, the mortality after 4 washes declined considerably (43.5% and 41.3% for deltamethrin tablets and liquid respectively when washing every second day). Alphacypermethrin showed slightly better results after 3 washes every 7th day compared to deltamethrin tablets (63.8% and 43.3% mortality, respectively). The wash resistance offered by PermaNet was much better and longer lasting: Anopheles mortality after 4 washes was 92.6%, after 10 washes 83.7% and after 20 washes 87.1%. The limitations of commercially available wash-resistant nets are, however, their limited accessibility and the difficulty of replacing all existing bednets with a new product.

Abstract
Insecticide-treated bedding materials (sheets and blankets) could be protective against vectors of malaria and leishmaniasis--especially in complex emergencies, epidemics and natural disasters where people are more likely to sleep in exposed situations. Comparison of cotton top-sheets impregnated with different pyrethroids (permethrin 500 mg/m2, deltamethrin 25 mg/m2 or alphacypermethrin 25 mg/m2) for effectiveness against mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) was undertaken in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Predominant species encountered were Anopheles stephensi Liston, An. pulcherrimus Theobald, An. nigerrimus Giles, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus Giles and other culicine mosquitoes. All three pyrethroid treatments performed significantly better than the untreated sheets in deterrence and killing of mosquitoes. No significant differences were found between the three insecticides tested in terms of entomological effect. Washing of the treated sheets greatly reduced their effectiveness. In a user acceptance study conducted among 88 families (divided into four groups), six families complained of irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. Of these reports, one was from the placebo group (using untreated sheets) and the other five (5/22=23%) from families using deltamethrin-treated sheets. All families allocated to permethrin and alphacypermethrin groups declared an appreciation for the intervention and reported no side-effects. Ten of the placebo group disliked the intervention, citing no prevention of mosquito biting as the reason. Side-effects associated with deltamethrin indicate that alphacypermethrin and permethrin are more appropriate first choice insecticides for treatment of sheets and blankets.

Abstract
The study aim was to compare three formulations, tablet deltamethrin, liquid deltamethrin and liquid permethrin, for their impact on vector behaviour and persistence. Product acceptance, perceived side-effects and user's perceptions of effectiveness were also investigated. At the beginning of the 1998 rainy season, 255 nets in a Gambian village were dipped in one of the three insecticides. Chemical residue analysis immediately after dipping showed that the target doses were reached for the liquid insecticides, but tablet deltamethrin deposited significantly less. Insecticide persistence at 5 months, however, was highest for the tablet formulation. Susceptibility tests established that Anophelines in this area were sensitive to both insecticides. All three formulations appeared effective as very few live Anophelines, or other mosquitoes, were caught under the treated nets. This conclusion was supported by the bioassay data with both deltamethrin formulations giving over 90% mortality soon after dipping and at 3 months, and at 5 months 70.8 and 79.6% were obtained for deltametrin liquid and tablet, respectively. Permethrin appeared less effective at all times (72.4, 86.8, 59.0%). There were no serious side-effects reported by the villagers following dipping. All three treatments were perceived as effective by the majority (92%) of users and most (93%) wanted to use the insecticide again. Deltamethrin tablets thus appear as good as permethrin for treating bednets in The Gambia. In addition, a tablet formulation is considerable easier to pack and distribute.

Abstract
Pyrethroid-impregnated bednets are advocated for personal protection against malaria vectors. To avoid the need for periodic re-treatment, it would be advantageous to have nets that retain insecticidal efficacy for years and withstand repeated washing. Such a type of commercially produced bednet with permethrin 2% incorporated in polyethylene fibres (trademark Olyset Net supplied by Sumika Life-Tech Co., Osaka, Japan) was evaluated against mosquitoes in veranda-trap huts at Yaokoffikro, near Bouaké, C te d'Ivoire, by standard WHOPES phase II procedures. Four Olyset Nets were compared with a standard untreated polyester net as control. They comprised three examples previously used in a village for over 3 years (one washed, one dirty, one very dirty) and a previously unused Olyset Net, newly unwrapped, from the same original batch. Bioassays with 3 min exposure of susceptible Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) gave >99% mortality of female mosquitoes tested on the 'new' Olyset Net. The used Olyset Nets gave mortality rates averaging 83% for the washed net, 85% for the dirty net and 55% for the very dirty net (within 24-h following 3 min exposure). Thus, Olyset Nets were found to remain remarkably effective against susceptible An. gambiae for at least 3 years under field conditions. Wild pyrethroid-resistant populations of Culex quinquefasciatus Say and An. gambiae (savanna cytotype with 96% kdr) were assessed during June-August 1999 for their responses to sleepers protected by nets in the experimental huts. With regard to hut entry by foraging female mosquitoes, Olyset Nets showed some deterrency against An. gambiae (44% reduction by the new net, approximately 20% by the dirty nets, none by the washed net), but not against Cx. quinquefasciatus. Among mosquitoes entering the hut with untreated control net, 30-34% tried to leave (exophily) but were caught in the verandah trap. The permethrin repellency of Olyset Nets increased exophily by 19% for An. gambiae and 14% for Cx. quinquefasciatus. Blood-feeding rates were 16% An. gambiae and 35% Cx. quinquefasciatus in the hut with sleeper under the untreated net (showing considerable prevention of biting), 22-26% of both species in huts with washed or dirty used Olyset Nets (not significantly different from control), while the biting success rate of Cx. quinquefasciatus (but not kdr An. gambiae) was more than halved by the 'new' Olyset Net. Mortality rates of pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus from the huts were, respectively, 3% and 8% with the untreated polyester net, 27.5% and 17% with the 'new' Olyset, 15% and 17.5% with the washed Olyset, 16-25% and 17-20% with dirty old Olyset Nets. Kill differences between nets are significantly different for both An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Unfortunately the washed used Olyset Net showed least activity against resistant mosquitoes, despite its greatest activity against susceptible An. gambiae. In each case there was evidence that a high proportion of mosquitoes failed to feed through the net (many of them dying from starvation when they could not leave the closed hut), with indications that dirty Olyset nets enhanced this protective value.

Abstract
The present study investigated the use of insecticide-impregnated bed nets by communities in central Malaita, Solomon Islands. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected by: (1) questionnaire administration to 124 care-givers of children aged 0-10 years of age; (2) 20 focus group discussions; (3) two structured observations of bed net re-impregnation, and (4) interviews with key informants. Ninety-four percent of all care-givers had bed nets, but only 62% had sufficient bed nets for all household members. Fifty-two percent used bed nets throughout the year and 70% of care-givers reported that all their children slept under bed nets. Although coastal householders considered malaria and mosquitoes more of a problem than inland householders, overall bed net compliance did not differ. Factors affecting bed net ownership were cost and community expectation of free bed nets. Bed net use was affected by four factors: (1) seasonality (99% used bed nets during the rainy season, 52% used them all year); (2) mosquito nuisance (59% of respondents reported that protection against mosquitoes was the main reason for using a bed net); (3) weather (68% of care-givers would not use a bed net if the weather was hot), and (4) low density of mosquitoes (respondents who used bed nets as protection against mosquito nuisance were more likely not to use bed nets when mosquitoes were few than those who used bed nets for malaria protection (odds ratio (OR), 3.9; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.4-12.0). Protection against malaria was the main reason children slept under bed nets. Children from households where bed nets were used for malaria protection were more likely to sleep under bed nets than children from households where nets were used as protection from mosquitoes only (OR, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.3-5.9). Other factors that affected children's bed net use were, age (users were significantly younger than non-users; chi(2)=7.9, degrees of freedom=1, P=0.005) and sufficiency of bed nets (OR, 2.0; 95% CI, 1. 3-7.0).

Abstract
Comparisons of bednets treated either with alphacypermethrin or lambdacyhalothrin showed similar effectiveness by various entomological criteria. Lambdacyhalothrin was associated with significantly more reports of nasal irritation than alphacypermethrin. The 2 net treatments were equally effective in reducing incidence of new malaria infections and the treated nets were much more effective than untreated nets. These measurements were made after clearing existing infections with chlorproguanil-dapsone. This drug combination was more than 99% effective in clearing infections 1 week after treatment and a study of children taken to an altitude with no malaria transmission showed that there were very few recrudescences.

Abstract
A field trial of permethrin-impregnated bed nets (PIBs) was conducted in 2 Afghan refugee villages in Pakistan. Nets were issued to only 10% of families (= 1398 people); this simulated a situation in which bed nets are gradually adopted by villagers in Afghanistan. A further 10% lacking bed nets were selected as controls from the same villages. An initial survey showed that 86% of household heads were aware that malaria was transmitted by mosquito bites, but only 2% had used bed nets before. Trial families were encouraged to attend the village health centres if they fell ill. Microscopy records showed that, between July and December 1991, 22.4% of the control group became infected with Plasmodium vivax and 13.0% contracted P. falciparum while in the intervention group only 9.9% contracted P. vivax (relative risk 0.58, confidence interval [CI] 95% 0.49-0.68) and only 3.8% contracted P. falciparum (relative risk 0.39, 95% CI 0.29-0.53). A single treatment of the nets with permethrin at 0.5g/m2 remained protective throughout the 6 months' transmission season. 73% of families claimed to use their nets every night; members of families who claimed to use nets less regularly showed an incidence similar to that of the control group. There was no sex or age difference in net use or protective efficacy. Headlouse infestation rates were reduced in PIB users. Few nets were washed, given away or sold. The prospect for PIBs as personal protection appears good, despite people's lack of previous experience.

Abstract
Field trials were undertaken in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan to determine the effects of pyrethroid-sprayed tents on feeding success, mortality and biting-rates of wild mosquitoes attracted to bait cows confined within the tents. Under natural conditions, endophagic mosquitoes rested only briefly in untreated tents during the night, followed by complete exodus at dawn. In tents sprayed on the interior surface with permethrin 0.5 mg/m2 or with deltamethrin 0.03 g/m2 the biting rate of Anopheles stephensi was reduced by about 40%; deterrency against culicines and other anophelines was much less. Mortality-rates of bloodfed mosquitoes from the treated tents were 75% An.stephensi, 65% An.subpictus but only 10% of culicines. Outer fly-sheets prolonged the effective life of the treatment; bioassays on the sprayed inner-sheets showed that insecticidal efficacy remained high for over a year, whereas on tents without fly-sheets permethrin residual efficacy declined rapidly 20-40 weeks post-treatment. It is concluded that tent-spraying with fast-acting photostable residual pyrethroid insecticide would probably provide effective protection against malaria transmission for the inhabitants of tents in any part of the world where the vector mosquitoes are endophilic and susceptible to pyrethroids.
