Abstract
Leukocyte immunoglobulin like receptor B1 (LILRB1) plays a significant role in a number of infectious, autoimmune, cardiovascular, and oncologic disorders. LILRB1 expression varies between individuals and may be associated with polymorphisms on the regulatory region of the LILRB1 gene, as well as to previous cytomegalovirus infection. In this study, the contribution of these two factors to LILRB1 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of healthy young adults was analyzed. LILRB1 expression in NK cells, T cells, B cells and monocytes was significantly stronger in individuals who had had cytomegalovirus infection than in those who had not (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P < 0.01, and P < 0.001, respectively). Overall, no differences in LILRB1 expression were observed between individuals with and without GAA haplotypes of the LILRB1 regulatory region. However, when analyzed according to cytomegalovirus infection status, significant differences in LILRB1+ NK cells were observed. A higher proportion of LILRB1+ cells was found in GAA+ than in GAA- individuals who had not been infected (P < 0.01), whereas GAA- individuals had a larger proportion of LILRB1+ cells than GAA+ individuals who were cytomegalovirus positive (P < 0.01). In conclusion, cytomegalovirus infection has a major effect on LILRB1 expression in NK and other mononuclear cells and polymorphisms in the LILRB1 regulatory region appear to have a modulatory influence over this effect.

Abstract
Post-traumatic hypopituitarism has remained as an obscured cause of worsening morbidity and mortality in head injury patients. Researchers have for decades been puzzled by the mechanism of pituitary dysfunction in these cases. Amongst other causes like direct injury, vascular injury etc, an immunological basis of hypopituitarism has been suggested in some animal studies as well as human research. In this article, we have reviewed the latest articles and compiled the evidence which suggests for or against the role of autoimmunity in post-traumatic hypopituitarism or which defines the strength to which autoimmunity has been established as a cause of head-injury induced pituitary dysfunction.

Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are effector lymphocytes of the innate immune system that are able to mount a multifaceted antiviral response within hours following infection. This is achieved through an array of cell surface receptors surveilling host cells for alterations in human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA-I) expression and other ligands as signs of viral infection, malignant transformation, and cellular stress. This interaction between HLA-I ligands and NK-cell receptor is not only important for recognition of diseased cells but also mediates tuning of NK-cell-effector functions. HIV-1 alters the expression of HLA-I ligands on infected cells, rendering them susceptible to NK cell-mediated killing. However, over the past years, various HIV-1 evasion strategies have been discovered to target NK-cell-receptor ligands and allow the virus to escape from NK cell-mediated immunity. While studies have been mainly focusing on the role of polymorphic HLA-A, -B, and -C molecules, less is known about how HIV-1 affects the more conserved, non-classical HLA-I molecules HLA-E, -G, and -F. In this review, we will focus on the recent progress in understanding the role of non-classical HLA-I ligands in NK cell-mediated recognition of HIV-1-infected cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the role of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)-G in the susceptibility to HIV-1 infection through the analysis of the HLA-G 3' untranslated region (UTR) polymorphisms 14 bp insertion/deletion (rs66554220) and +3142C>G (rs1063320). DESIGN We analyzed 582 HIV-1 infected patients and 626 uninfected individuals from Brazil and Italy in a case-control study. METHODS HLA-G polymorphisms were genotyped using PCR, PCR-RFLP assays or direct sequencing. All analyses were stratified by ethnicity. Genotypic, allelic and diplotypic frequencies were compared between HIV-1 infected subjects and controls using Chi-square or Fischer exact tests. Also, haplotypic frequencies were estimated using MLocus software. RESULTS African-derived HIV-infected individuals presented a higher frequency of the 14 bp insertion allele as compared to non-infected individuals (0.468 versus 0.373, respectively; p(Bonf) = 0.010). A higher frequency of the 14 bp insertion +3142G (insG) haplotype (0.456 versus 0.346, p<0.001) and the insG/insG diplotype (OR=1.88, 95%CI = 1.08-3.23, p=0.021) was observed among African-derived patients as compared to uninfected controls. Also, we observed a higher frequency of the ins/ins genotype among African-derived HIV patients co-infected with HCV (OR=2.78, 95%CI = 1.20-6.49, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS Our data point out to an increased frequency of alleles and genotypes associated with low HLA-G expression among African-derived patients, suggesting a potential role for HLA-G in the susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and HCV co-infection in those individuals.

Abstract
The single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs12979860 near the IL28B gene has been associated with the spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus. We sought to determine whether this SNP could be associated with the spontaneous control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We studied the prevalence of the IL28B CC genotype among 53 white HIV controllers, compared with the prevalence among 389 HIV-infected noncontrollers. We found that the IL28B CC genotype was independently associated with spontaneous HIV control (odds ratio [OR], 2.669; P = .017), as were female sex (OR, 7.077; P ≤ .001) and the presence of HLA-B57 and/or B27 (OR, 3.080; P = .017). This result supports the idea that common host mechanisms are involved in the spontaneous control of these 2 chronic infections.
