Biologia reprodutiva e polinização de Palicourea crocea (Rubiaceae), uma espécie distílica e ornitófila no Cerrado de Goiás, Brasil

Resumo A heterostilia é um polimorfismo floral geneticamente controlado onde populações de plantas apresentam dois ou três morfos com peças reprodutivas em alturas recíprocas entre os morfos. Em populações naturais, espera-se encontrar uma razão igual entre os morfos (isopletia). O objetivo do estudo foi caracterizar o sistema reprodutivo, a biologia floral, as características heterostílicas, incluindo reciprocidade das peças reprodutivas, fenologia e polinização em Palicourea crocea, uma espécie arbustiva do sub bosque de formações florestais do Cerrado. Para tal foram medidas estruturas florais, realizados cruzamentos controlados, observados os visitantes florais, além de acompanhamento fenológico. Palicourea crocea é uma espécie distílica típica, autoincompatível, com altos índices de hercogamia recíproca entre os morfos. Polinizada preferencialmente por beija-flores, além de mariposas e abelhas. Houve formação maior de frutos em polinização cruzada intermorfo (> 50%) e menor formação em polinização intramorfo (< 20%) e autopolinização (< 13%). Esses dados foram confirmados pelo não crescimento de tubos polínicos em pistilos autopolinizados e polinizados de forma intramorfo. A floração é anual, e ocorre entre os meses de novembro e fevereiro, com pico de floração em dezembro e janeiro. Os dados reprodutivos avaliados se mostram similares a outras espécies de Rubiaceae do sub bosque de ambientes florestais do Cerrado.

Reciprocal style polymorphisms are not easily categorised: the case of heterostyly in Lithodora and Glandora (Boraginaceae)

Interest in reciprocal floral polymorphisms, such as heterostyly, has increased in recent decades because they can be used as suitable model systems to study mechanisms of outbreeding and disassortative mating in plants. Heterostylous plants are characterised by the presence of discrete morphs that differ in sex organ position and in some other ancillary traits. As regards sex organ deployment, different types of polymorphisms have been described, depending on number and type of discrete classes present in populations and degree of reciprocity between them. However, a clear-cut characterisation of stylar polymorphisms does not appear to be the best approach when there is great variability among populations because of continuous variation of some of traits examined. A recent study in Lithodora sensu lato (recently split into two separate genera, Lithodora and Glandora) showed a wide variation in sex organ position across species in the genus, which warrants precise population analysis of stylar polymorphism and its reciprocity. We provide a detailed morphometric analysis of flower sexual traits and include those considered to be ancillary characters. We report a wide variation in these traits in populations of Lithodora s.l. and highlight the subjectivity of the former characterisation of style polymorphism based on visual inspection. Ancillary traits appear repeatedly in Lithodora and Glandora, particularly in the latter. The appearance of these traits seems to be related to greater reciprocity between sexual whorls in Glandora, with the exception of G. prostrata. These results agree with evolutionary steps proposed in the build-up of heterostyly according to some evolutionary models. We also examined variation in polymorphisms in light of current models for evolution of heterostyly, and, more specifically, we sought to verify the prediction that flower traits as a whole (i.e., flower integration) respond to selective pressure to assure the exact location of pollen on the pollinator body. Most reciprocal populations and species, where between-morph pollen transfer is expected to be higher, would show greater integration. Our results confirm this hypothesis.

Biologia reprodutiva de Psychotria carthagenensis (Rubiaceae), espécie distílica de fragmento florestal de mata ciliar, Centro-Oeste do Brasil

Resumo Este estudo teve por objetivos analisar a fenologia de floração, a biologia e a morfologia floral, o sistema e o sucesso reprodutivo dos morfos florais de Psychotria carthagenensis Jacq. O período de floração se estendeu de maio (estação seca) a janeiro (estação chuvosa). A floração dos morfos florais foi sincronizada e o número médio de inflorescências, de botões em pré-antese e de flores abertas por indivíduos foram semelhantes. A antese das flores de ambos os morfos foi de 12 horas. Houve diferença significativa no comprimento da corola, dos lobos estigmáticos, das anteras e altura do estilete entre os morfos florais. A viabilidade de pólen foi alta entre ambos os morfos. A formação de frutos ocorreu em polinizações intramorfos e intermorfos e não houve diferença significativa na produção de frutos e sementes em tratamentos intermorfos. Os atributos florais analisados sugerem que os dois morfos contribuem similarmente para a manutenção da espécie na área de estudo.

Flower morphology, nectar features, and hummingbird visitation to Palicourea crocea (Rubiaceae) in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil

We investigated flower morphology, nectar features, and hummingbird visitation to Palicourea crocea (Rubiaceae), a common ornithophilous shrub found in the riparian forest understory in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. Flowers are distylous and the style-stamen dimorphism is accompanied by other intermorph dimorphisms in corolla length, anther length, and stigma lobe length and form. We did not observe strict reciprocity in the positioning of stigma and anthers between floral morphs. Flowering occurred during the rainy season, October to December. Nectar standing crop per flowerwas relatively constant throughout the day, which apparently resulted in hummingbirds visiting the plant throughout the day. Energetic content of the nectar in each flower (66.5J) and that required daily by hummingbird visitors (up to 30kJ) would oblige visits to hundreds of flowers each day, and thus movements between plants that should result in pollen flow. Three hummingbird species visited the flowers: the Gilded Sapphire (Hylocharis chrysura), the Black-throated Mango (Anthracothorax nigricollis), and the Glittering-bellied Emerald (Chlorostilbon aureoventris). The frequency of hummingbird visitation, nectar features, and the scarcity of other hummingbird-visited flowers in the study area, indicate that P. crocea is an important nectar resource for short-billed hummingbirds in the study site.

Breeding system and floral morphometry of distylous Psychotria L. species in the Atlantic rain forest, SE Brazil

General patterns of floral morphology and incompatibility mechanisms have been described for many distylous plants. The absence of these patterns in typically distylous groups, as observed especially in tropical environments, is interpreted as atypical distyly, or as a new reproductive strategy derived from it. Data are presented here on the morphological and compatibility relations between floral morphs of four Psychotria dimorphic species in the Atlantic rain forest in SE Brazil: Psychotria jasminoides, P. birotula, P. mapourioides, and P. pubigera. When significant differences were found, floral parts were larger in thrum flowers. Results of controlled crosses showed that most incompatible pollen tubes were arrested in the stigma, and only in a low proportion in the upper parts of the style. We conclude that, at the study site, the majority and most important morphological and mating features of typical distyly seem to be conserved in P. jasminoides and P. mapourioides, which presented reciprocal herkogamy, self and intramorph incompatibility, and a balanced morph ratio in the population. Typical distyly in P. birotula is supported by floral morphology, pollen tube data and morph ratio and, in P. pubigera, only by floral morphology and pollen tube data.

Reproductive ecology of distylous Palicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae) in a tropical montane cloud forest. II. Attracting and rewarding mutualistic and antagonistic visitors

By definition, the floral morphs of distylous plants differ in floral architecture. Yet, because cross-pollination is necessary for reproductive success in both morphs, they should not differ in attributes that contribute to attracting and rewarding floral visitors. Floral and vegetative attributes that function in distylous polymorphism in hummingbird-pollinated Palicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae) and the responses of pollinators and insect herbivores to the resources offered by both morphs were investigated. The performance of each morph along multiple stages of the reproductive cycle, from inflorescence and nectar production to fruit production, was surveyed, and pollinator behavior and nectar standing crops were then observed. Costs associated with such attractiveness were also evaluated in terms of herbivore attack and of plant reproductive fitness (female function) as a function of leaf herbivory. The number of inflorescences, floral buds, open flowers, and ripe fruits offered by either floral morph were similar, but short-styled plants almost doubled the number of developing fruits of long-styled plants. Long-styled flowers produced higher nectar volumes and accumulated more nectar over time than short-styled flowers. Measures of nectar standing crop and data on pollinator behavior suggest that hummingbirds respond to this morph-specific scheduling of nectar production. Lastly, long-styled plants suffered a higher herbivore attack and lost more leaf area over time than those with short-styled flowers. Herbivory was negatively correlated with fruit number and fruit mass, and long-styled plants set significantly less fruit mass than short-styled plants. The results suggest that pollinators and herbivores may exert selective pressures on floral and vegetative traits that could also influence gender function.
