Effects of urea treatment of straw and dietary level of vegetable oil on lactating dairy cows

Four crossbreds (75% Holstein Friesian) lactating dairy cows were used to evaluate the effects of sunflower oil (SFO) levels and roughage source on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, milk yield, and milk composition. Four milking cows with average liveweight of 410 ± 25 kg and 18 ± 11 days in milk were randomly assigned according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with SFO levels (3% or 6%) in the concentrate and the roughage source [rice straw (RS) or urea-treated RS (UTRS)] being the main factors. Four dietary treatments as (1) 3% SFO + RS, (2) 6% SFO + RS, (3) 3% SFO + UTRS, and (4) 6% SFO + UTRS were offered ad libitum total mixed ration, with a concentrate/roughage ratio of 60:40. The results were found that UTRS as a roughage source significantly increased feed intake, digestibility, concentration of acetic acid in rumen fluid, rumen ammonia-nitrogen, blood-urea nitrogen, milk urea-nitrogen, and milk yield (3.5% fat-corrected milk) compared with cows fed on untreated RS. Supplementation of SFO at 3% in the concentrate-supplemented group having increased dry matter intake, milk fat percentage, and milk yield (3.5% fat-corrected milk) compared with 6% SFO supplementation. However, there were no interaction effects between level of SFO in the concentrate and roughage source in any of the factors studied.

Activity of cellulolytic enzymes in the contents of reticulorumen and caecocolon of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

Selective ruminants, which prefer easily digestible plants, cannot digest fibrous forage as well as grass eaters. Low enzyme activity or short retention time of ingesta particles in fermentation chambers appeared to be responsible for reduced cellulose breakdown. Seasonal activity of cellulolytic enzymes, cellulose concentration and protozoa population in reticulorumen (RR) and caecocolon (CC) of roe deer as a typical concentrate selector were investigated. Cellulase activities were lowest in winter when cellulose concentration in RR contents were highest. Highest enzyme activities and lowest cellulose concentration were measured in early spring. Cellulolytic activities were significantly correlated with the number of protozoa in RR. Only one entodinomorphic genus was identified in the RR. The enzyme activities in CC were far lower compared with those in RR. Low cellulose digestion in the RR cannot be compensated for by cellulose breakdown in the CC. The reduced cellulose digestion of roe deer may be attributed to the short retention time of food particles in spring and summer, whereas decreased colonisation of microorganisms in the rumen may be the main reason for low cellulose breakdown in winter.

[Use of free fatty acids in animal nutrition]

The description of the processes of absorption of free fatty acids in monogastric animals and in ruminants is the first part of the review. The feeding problems of free fatty acids are discussed in the second part. In pig diets is a level up 6% free fatty acids in the dry matter of the ration not disadvantageous. In the feeding of ruminants additionally free fatty acids reduce the fermentation processes in the rumen. Only protected free fatty acids (Ca-fatty acids) are favourable in feeding systems for high yielding cows.

Lipid metabolism in the rumen

Recent advances in ruminal lipid metabolism have focused primarily on manipulation of physicochemical events in the rumen aimed at two practical outcomes: 1) control of antimicrobial effects of fatty acids so that additional fat can be fed to ruminants without disruption of ruminal fermentation and digestion and 2) regulation of microbial biohydrogenation to alter the absorption of selected fatty acids that might enhance performance or reduce saturation of meat and milk. Properties of lipids that determine their antimicrobial effects in the rumen include type of functional group, degree of unsaturation, formation of carboxylate salts, and physical association of lipids with surfaces of feed particles and microbes. The mechanism of how lipids interfere with ruminal fermentation is a complex model involving partitioning of lipid into the microbial cell membrane, potency of the lipid to disrupt membrane and cellular function, physical attachment of microbial cells to plant surfaces, and expression and activity of microbial hydrolytic enzymes. Lipolytic and hydrogenation rates vary with forage quality (stage of maturity and N content), surface area of feed particles in the rumen, and structural modifications of the lipid molecule that inhibit attack by bacterial isomerases.
