Abstract
OBJECTIVES As the life expectancy of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) continues to increase, there is an increased risk of developing dementia. While psychosocial interventions are gaining prominence, evidence is limited for people with both dementia and ID. This review discusses the effectiveness of direct psychosocial interventions and adaptations to facilitate delivery within this population. METHODS The review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Five electronic databases, grey literature, and reference lists of included articles were searched for relevant studies. 10 eligible studies were appraised and analysed by narrative synthesis. RESULTS Ten distinct interventions were identified and categorised based on their purpose and delivery. All interventions were beneficial in improving a range of outcomes, though some studies were of low quality and most had small samples. Common adaptations included simplification of tasks and material, higher staff-to-client ratio, and alternative communication methods. CONCLUSION There is emerging evidence for several psychosocial interventions for people with ID and dementia, though further research is required on effectiveness and generalisability. The adaptations discussed may guide implementation into routine care and contribute to current policies and guidelines on improving ID and dementia care.

Abstract
The transition to university is a process that presents young adults with several challenges in adaptation, especially students with disabilities. The current study investigated the differences in adaptation and academic performance between students with and without disabilities and further examined these differences among students with disabilities. Additionally, we explored the role of academic support for students with disabilities' adaptation and academic performance, as well as their perceptions of a proposed specialised package of counselling psychology interventions. The sample consisted of 127 students with disabilities and 127 without disabilities, aged 18-24 years. Results revealed that students with disabilities reported a lower GPA and adaptation than students without disabilities. Additionally, differences among students with disabilities were observed only in terms of GPA, according to their disability type, existence of comorbidity and type of exam accommodations. Interestingly, no differences were found in GPA or adaptation between students with disabilities who utilised psychological therapy and those who did not. Finally, adaptation scores, but not GPA, were higher for students with disabilities who were positive in receiving a specialised package of counselling psychology interventions. The findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature and future considerations of counselling psychology's role in support of students with disabilities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) are at higher risk of experiencing difficulties with anxiety than the general population. However, there are major barriers for individuals to receive appropriate services. There is a growing understanding of the importance of developing appropriate psychological interventions for this group. The objective of the current review was to systematically evaluate the findings of studies investigating the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for individuals with ID and anxiety. Another aim was to explore which adaptions to CBT and treatment components were currently being utilised within the field. METHOD The electronic databases of CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection and Scopus were searched to identify relevant studies. The methodological quality of these studies was assessed using established quality assessment tools by the National Institutes of Health for pre and post studies and case series. RESULTS Nine studies were included in this systematic review, all of which reported improvements in anxiety severity for some participants (25%-100%; N = 60) following CBT. Only three studies reported moderate effect sizes for CBT interventions on anxiety for individuals with ID. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS There is emerging literature supporting the effectiveness of CBT for individuals with mild ID. Findings highlight that CBT for individuals with anxiety and mild ID, including cognitive components, may be feasible and tolerable. While the field is gradually receiving more attention, there are significant methodological flaws present, which limit the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the effectiveness of CBT for individuals with ID. However, there is emerging evidence for techniques such as cognitive restructuring and thought replacement and modifications such as visual aids, modelling and smaller groups based on this review. Future research is warranted to investigate whether individuals with more severe ID can benefit from CBT, as well as further exploring what are the necessary components and modifications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence indicates that, compared with their non-disabled counterparts, disabled people are likely to face greater mental health challenges as well as significant inequalities in accessing appropriate therapeutic support. Currently, little is known about how disabled people perceive and experience counselling and psychotherapy, what barriers/facilitators to therapy delivery and/or therapy participation exist for disabled clients and whether clinicians sufficiently adapt their practice to meet the needs of this diverse but marginalised population. In this paper, we outline a proposal for undertaking a scoping review that aims to identify and synthesise current research relating to disabled individuals' perceptions of accessibility and experiences of counselling and psychotherapy. The review aims to identify current gaps in the evidence base and inform how future research, practice and policy may develop and foster inclusive strategies and approaches which will support the psychological well-being of disabled clients accessing counselling and psychotherapy. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The undertaking and reporting of the proposed scoping review will be guided by the framework outlined by Arksey and O'Malley and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Systematic searches of the PsycINFO, CINAHL, EMBASE, EBSCO and Cochrane Library electronic databases will be conducted. Reference lists of relevant studies will be reviewed to identify additional studies. Eligible studies will be limited to those published from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2022 and in the English language. Empirical studies involving disabled individuals receiving and/or who have received a form of therapeutic intervention will be included. Data will be extracted, collated and charted, and will be summarised quantitatively through descriptive numerical analysis and qualitatively through a narrative synthesis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The proposed scoping review of published research will not require ethical approval. Results will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of anxiety disorders is high in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), an under-recognized multisystem condition. Prominent features include an array of somatic, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric disorders. This case study reports for the first time on the application of individual cognitive behavioral therapy in 22q11.2DS. METHOD Two young adults with 22q11.2DS and an anxiety disorder received cognitive behavioral therapy based on standard protocols. Feasibility and efficacy were assessed through clinical interviews, clinical observations by the therapist, and questionnaires. RESULTS Both participants were engaged in the therapy and showed understanding of basic cognitive behavioral therapy principles. However, they did not show a clear clinical improvement. Adjustments to the protocol were required, including increased flexibility and a proactive approach by the therapist, additional time per session, written information, and significant involvement of the family and multidisciplinary team. CONCLUSIONS Our findings may help identify required adaptations to cognitive behavioral therapy protocols for this and similar genetic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of eHealth, which has accelerated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, could contribute to the access to tailor-made psychological interventions for people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD A scoping review was conducted on peer-reviewed studies between 1996-2019. RESULTS Thirty-three studies reported on the use of psychological eHealth interventions focused on mental health problems and/or challenging behaviour. The vast majority of these studies reported on interventions that were delivered at the individual level. The context in which these interventions were delivered varied, primarily ranging from the home setting to residential settings, as well as day or activity centres and schools. The studies described various types of interventions: telehealth interventions, computerized cognitive behavioural therapy, and interventions focused on (social) learning principles targeting challenging behaviour. CONCLUSIONS eHealth provides new opportunities for both therapists and lay-therapists to deliver psychological interventions. Future studies should focus on the effectiveness of psychological eHealth interventions.

Abstract
People with intellectual disability (ID) experience higher rates of mental illness and reduced access to appropriate care and treatment. Tailored electronic mental health (eMH) programs offer opportunities to address these disparities. The aim of this study is to examine whether a fully automated and self-guided eMH program tailored to the needs of people with ID can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and improve daily functioning in people with borderline-to-mild ID. Australians with borderline-to-mild ID, aged 16 years and older with mild-to-moderate depression and/or anxiety symptoms will be eligible to participate with the help of a nominated carer, if necessary. A randomised controlled trial with a sample size of 150 participants divided into treatment and waitlist control arms will be conducted. Participants randomised to the intervention group will have full access to the Healthy Mind program for eight weeks. The waitlist control group will gain full access to the program following the eight-week treatment period. Efficacy will be assessed on the Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Scale; Kessler-10; and the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 across three time-points (baseline, eight weeks, and three months). We expect that people who use the intervention will report reduced depression and anxiety, relative to the control group. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the effectiveness of a fully automated eMH program for improving mental health in people with ID. We expect our study to render new knowledge on the delivery and effects of internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) tools for people with ID.

Abstract
<b><i>Hintergrund:</i></b> Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung (IB) sind häufig von psychischen Störungen betroffen. Gleichzeitig ist die psychotherapeutische Versorgung in diesem Bereich bisher unzureichend, und die Evidenz bezüglich der Wirksamkeit verhaltenstherapeutischer Interventionen bei Erwachsenen mit IB ist unklar. <b><i>Ziele:</i></b> Eine systematische Literaturrecherche in den Datenbanken PubMed, PsycINFO und Google Scholar wurde durchgeführt, um die aktuelle Studienlage zu verhaltenstherapeutischen Interventionen bei Menschen mit IB zu evaluieren. Ausgewählt wurden Studien zu verhaltenstherapeutischen Verfahren bei psychischen Störungen und Problemverhalten im Erwachsenenalter. <b><i>Ergebnisse:</i></b> Zweiunddreißig Studien entsprachen den Einschlusskriterien; es wurden sowohl einzeltherapeutische als auch gruppentherapeutische Interventionen eingeschlossen. Für Menschen mit leichter IB (IQ 50–69) und teilweise auch bei mittlerer IB (IQ 35–49) konnten in einigen Studien Hinweise auf effektive und gut umsetzbare Verfahren gefunden werden. Deutliche positive Effekte aus verschiedenen Studien zeigten sich bei depressiven Symptomen und bei aggressivem Verhalten sowohl im ambulanten wie auch im forensischen Setting. Für Angstsymptome und bei Raucherentwöhnung liegen ebenfalls positive Befunde vor. Bei psychotischen Störungen und bei pathologischem Horten muss die Wirksamkeit von verhaltenstherapeutischen Interventionen noch als unklar eingeschätzt werden. <b><i>Schlussfolgerungen:</i></b> Es bedarf weiterer Forschung (insbesondere randomisierter kontrollierter Studien mit aktiven Kontrollbedingungen), in der differenzierter überprüft wird, welche Aspekte der Therapien/welche Settingbedingungen die Effektivität bei den verschiedenen Graden der IB beeinflussen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic mental health (e-mental health) programs for people with an intellectual disability are currently underexplored but may provide a way of mitigating some of the barriers that this population faces in accessing appropriate mental health services. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of Healthy Mind, an e-mental health program for adults with an intellectual disability developed by the Black Dog Institute, focusing on the design and implementation of the website. METHODS A qualitative research design was used, which involved semistructured interviews and focus groups with people with an intellectual disability, support workers, and allied health professionals. People with an intellectual disability were also observed while using the website. A thematic analysis was used to interrogate the interview transcripts and observational field notes. RESULTS Participants found the content of the website informative and appreciated the many ways that the website had been made accessible to users. Participants voiced some differing requirements regarding the way information should be presented and accessed on the website. Acknowledging different types of support needs was identified as an important issue for website dissemination. CONCLUSIONS The Healthy Mind website promises to provide an excellent tool for people with ID and their supporters. This research has pragmatic implications for the future development and implementation of the program, while contributing to knowledge in the broader fields of e-mental health and inclusive design for people with an intellectual disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is increasing evidence that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be effective for people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of this review was to report the nature and frequency of adaptations reported in studies of CBT for people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD This review updated and extended a previous review by (Whitehouse et al. 2006, J Appl Res Intellect Disabil, 19, 55), which used a framework of adaptations developed by (Hurley et al., 1998, J Dev Phys Disabil, 10, 365). Adaptations included simplification, language, activities, developmental level, use of directive style, flexible methods, involve caregivers, transference/countertransference and disability/rehabilitation approaches. A search identified peer-reviewed papers that reported individual CBT informed psychological interventions for people with an Intellectual Disability. RESULTS The search identified 23 studies which met the inclusion criteria for review. Studies reported the majority of the categories of adaptation described by (Hurley et al., 1998, J Dev Phys Disabil, 10, 365). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the framework of adaptations needs further development to increase sensitivity in identifying and categorizing adaptations of CBT. Increased, systematic reporting of adaptations to studies of CBT with people with intellectual disabilities is recommended.

A case series to examine whether people with learning disabilities can learn prerequisite skills for cognitive behavioural therapy. COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPIST 2018. Abstract
AbstractAlthough cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is recommended for the treatment of a number of mental disorders among the general population, the ability of individuals with learning disabilities (LD) to understand CBT concepts and engage in CBT has been questioned. Aims: To examine whether specific prerequisite skills for CBT can be taught to people with LD using a newly developed training intervention and to investigate the acceptability of the intervention. Method: The study adopted a within-subjects case series research design. Quantitative assessment methods were used to evaluate the CBT skills of six adults with mild to moderate LD pre-intervention, following intervention and at 1-week follow-up. Participants were also asked to provide some qualitative feedback about how they had experienced the intervention. Results: The cognitive mediation skills and the ability of most participants to link activating events to emotions increased following intervention training and this improvement was maintained for four of them at follow-up. The feedback of participants regarding the process and content of the task demands was positive. Conclusions: The findings suggest that people with LD can learn some of the skills considered necessary to participate in CBT, such as cognitive mediation. However, further and more robust research is required to substantiate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current policy in the England suggests that people with intellectual disabilities should, where possible, access mainstream mental health services; this should include access to mainstream therapy services. It is likely that mainstream therapists will need training and support to work with people with intellectual disabilities. METHOD Sixty-eight therapists working in an English Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service received one- or 2-day training on working with people with intellectual disabilities. Measures of confidence, general therapeutic self-efficacy and attitudes to people with intellectual disabilities' use of mainstream mental health services were completed pre-training, post-training and at 3-month follow-up; at which time, 12 participants were interviewed about the impact of the training on their practice. RESULTS There was a significant positive change in all measures immediately post-training which was maintained at 3-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Training considerations for mainstream therapists who may work with people with intellectual disabilities are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of homework-task difficulty and electronic-diary reminders on written homework completion during cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for addiction. Completion of homework is an important element in CBT that may affect outcome. DESIGN All participants received all combinations of our two interventions in a factorial 2 × 2 counterbalanced Latin-square design. METHODS Methadone-maintained cocaine and heroin users were given homework between each of 12 weekly CBT sessions and carried electronic diaries that collected ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data on craving and exposure to drug-use triggers in four 3-week blocks assessing two levels of homework difficulty and prompted and unprompted homework. RESULTS Neither simplified (picture-based) homework nor electronic reminders increased homework completion. In EMA reports, standard but not simplified homework seemed to buffer the craving that followed environmental exposure to drug cues. EMA recordings before and after the CBT intervention confirmed a decrease over time in craving for cocaine and heroin. CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrate the utility of EMA to assess treatment effects. However, the hypothesis that simplified homework would increase compliance was not supported. PRACTITIONER POINTS Our simplifications of homework assignments for cognitive-behavioural therapy were mostly ineffective, or even counterproductive, perhaps because they did not engage sufficient depth of processing or because they were perceived as too simplistic. Our reminder beeps for homework were mostly ineffective, or even counterproductive, suggesting that mobile electronic interventions for substance-use disorders may need to be more interactive.

Abstract
Relatively little is known about the application of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to people with intellectual disabilities (ID). This review sought to synthesise available evidence on the effectiveness of CBT for anxiety or depression to assess the current level of evidence and make recommendations for future research. A comprehensive systematic literature search was conducted to identify qualitative and quantitative studies. Robust criteria were applied to select papers that were relevant to the review. Included papers were subject to quality appraisal. Eleven out of the 223 studies considered met our inclusion criteria and were included in the review in which CBT was used with participants with ID and anxiety (n=3), depression (n=4) or a mixed clinical presentation (n=4). There remains a paucity of evidence of effectiveness, however, the studies indicate that CBT is feasible and well-tolerated and may be effective in reducing symptoms of depression among adults with mild ID. Qualitative data reflect a positive perception of CBT amongst clients and carers. Further research is required to investigate the components of CBT, suitability for CBT, and requisite skills for CBT, which uses valid, sensitive and more holistic outcome measures.

Abstract
Applied behavior analysts work with many populations including individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Although behavior analysts have a variety of empirically supported treatments to implement when working with individuals with disabilities, sometimes, other variables may adversely impact treatment effectiveness. The degree to which problematic thoughts and feelings (private events) influence behavior may be a variable that contributes to treatment efficacy. Traditional behavior analytic services are not always equipped to successfully address the private events influencing client behavior. In such cases, it may be beneficial for behavior analysts to consider additional philosophically aligned treatments for private events. One such treatment, acceptance and commitment therapy, may be a useful tool for behavior analysts to incorporate into their toolbox in order to help clients. The purpose of this paper is to introduce behavior analysts to a potential solution to the problem of effectively addressing private events in behavior analytic services. We then propose a model for thinking about private events in relation to clients with disabilities and present a guide for taking steps to address private events in the clinical setting. We conclude this paper with a call for research and present a possible research agenda for behavior analysts.

Abstract
AIMS Training has been shown to improve the ability of people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) to perform some cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) tasks. This study used a computerised training paradigm with the aim of improving the ability of people with IDs to: a) discriminate between behaviours, thoughts and feelings, and b) link situations, thoughts and feelings. METHODS Fifty-five people with mild-to-moderate IDs were randomly assigned to a training or attention-control condition in a single-blind mixed experimental design. Computerised tasks assessed the participants' skills in: (a) discriminating between behaviours, thoughts and feelings (separately and pooled together), and (b) cognitive mediation by selecting appropriate emotions as consequences to given thoughts, and appropriate thoughts as mediators of given emotions. RESULTS Training significantly improved ability to discriminate between behaviours, thoughts and feelings pooled together, compared to the attention-control condition, even when controlling for baseline scores and IQ. Large within-group improvements in the ability to identify behaviours and feelings were observed for the training condition, but not the attention-control group. There were no significant between-group differences in ability to identify thoughts, or on cognitive mediation skills. CONCLUSIONS A single session of computerised training can improve the ability of people with IDs to understand and practise CBT tasks relating to behaviours and feelings. There is potential for computerised training to be used as a "primer" for CBT with people with IDs to improve engagement and outcomes, but further development on a specific computerised cognitive mediation task is needed.

Abstract
Attachment and attachment-related psychopathology has increasingly gained focus since Bowlby introduced the concept into the clinical repertoire. However, little has been done to explore attachment, or attachment-based interventions, within the context of intellectual disability. Clinical experience, however, has demonstrated significant attachment-related problems in children with intellectual disability. This article explores one such case of a 13-year-old girl with moderate intellectual disability and severe and persistent externalizing behavioural difficulties - biting, in particular. Once the severity of the behaviour was formulated within the framework of attachment, a structured attachment-focused parent-child intervention was designed in order to repair the damaged attachment between mother and daughter as a way of addressing the problematic behaviour. Outcomes demonstrated a sustained - immediately, at 3- and 6-month follow-up - positive impact of the intervention not only on the presenting problem but also on the quality of the relationship between mother and daughter. Research and clinical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Through experiencing stigma and discrimination, people with intellectual disability may become more sensitive to criticism from others and be less likely to believe praise. This study compared how people with and without intellectual disability viewed praise and criticism, using a vignette task developed for the study. Participants were asked to imagine someone saying something praiseworthy or critical and were then asked about their emotions, beliefs, and thoughts. People with intellectual disability were more likely to believe and be distressed by criticism. Contrary to predictions, this group were also more likely to believe praise and experience positive affect. The results suggest that the self-perceptions of people with intellectual disabilities is more dynamic and reliant on the views of others.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Current policy in UK health services emphasizes that, where possible, people with intellectual disabilities should access the same services as people without intellectual disabilities. One of the barriers to this is the confidence of clinicians and therapists. In this paper, we report on the development of a scale to describe the confidence of therapists in working with people with intellectual disabilities (the Therapy Confidence Scale-Intellectual Disabilities [TCS-ID]). One-hundred and eighty-one therapists who provided talking therapies but who did not work primarily with people with intellectual disabilities completed the scale; 43 people completed the scale twice for test-retest reliability purposes. One-hundred and seven people also completed a scale of general therapy self-efficacy. The TCS-ID has a single factor structure accounting for 62% of the variance, Cronbach's alpha for the scale is 0.93 and test-retest reliability is 0.83. There are significant differences in confidence based upon participants experience in working with people with intellectual disabilities and their therapeutic orientation, and there is a significant association between the TCS-ID and the General Therapy Self-efficacy Scale. Sixty clinicians working in mainstream mental health services received training on adapting their therapeutic approaches to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities. The TCS-ID was used pre-training and post-training and demonstrated a significant increase in confidence for all group. We suggest that the scale has good psychometric properties and can be used to develop an understanding of the impact of training for mainstream therapist in working with people with intellectual disabilities. KEY PRACTITIONER MESSAGE There is increasing emphasis on people with intellectual disabilities receiving services from mainstream mental health services. There is no research describing the experiences and outcomes of people with intellectual disabilities receiving mainstream talking therapy services. The confidence that clinicians have in working with people with intellectual disabilities may be a barrier to them receiving mainstream services. The Therapy Confidence Scale-Intellectual Disabilities is a psychometrically sound scale for measuring the confidence of therapists in working with people with intellectual disabilities and is a useful outcome measure for training clinicians to work with people with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective in assisting people to cope with chronic pain. However, this approach has not been systematically evaluated with people with an intellectual disability (ID). This pilot study sought to examine the feasibility and clinical utility of CBT for people with an ID, using elements of a manualised CBT pain management programme called Feeling Better. METHOD Five people with chronic pain who were functioning within the mild range of ID received a modified, individual eight-session cognitive behavioural intervention aimed at development of pain management skills. The participants' scores on a range of measures (pain management knowledge, pain self-efficacy, use of pain coping strategies and effectiveness of coping strategies) were compared pre-intervention, post-intervention and at 1-month follow-up. RESULTS The results indicated that participant scores on pain management knowledge, wellness-focused coping and effectiveness of coping increased following the intervention. However, these gains were generally not maintained at follow-up. CONCLUSION We concluded that CBT has potential utility for pain management in people with an ID, but that it requires a trial of a more intensive and prolonged intervention with the systematic involvement of care givers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper explores the difficulties the services system in Victoria has in responding to people with intellectual disability (ID) and mental health problems and identifies the underlying assumptions that have led to these. These issues are discussed and where possible put into a Victorian context with the intention of informing service development in the area of Dual Disability (co-morbid mental disorders in people with intellectual disability). CONCLUSIONS People with ID have high levels of mental health need. Generic services have difficulty responding to these needs due to a range of patient, professional and service system factors as well as some of the conceptual issues underpinning policy and legislation.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to identify and analyse the published evidence base and wider literature in relation to psychological interventions for adults with intellectual disabilities. The review suggests that the evidence base regarding psychological interventions is sparse yet growing, and if the therapeutic approaches are modified and adapted to meet the distinct needs of people with intellectual disabilities these may be life enhancing. The lack of access to psychotherapies for people with intellectual disabilities has led to their exclusion from mainstream research, thereby limiting the evidence base on effective interventions and treatment approaches. This has significant implications for research, policy, education and clinical practice and is an area requiring strategic and local attention and development in the future.

Abstract
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is increasingly used to address the emotional and interpersonal problems of people with ID. There is a limited but promising evidence base supporting this activity. However, these individuals face real and continuing challenges in their lives that have implications for their self and interpersonal perceptions. These adversities have implications for the adaptation of CBT. First, it may mean that characteristically negative perceptions may be more common and may be the result of a complex interaction with a truly aversive environment and should not simply be considered as cognitive distortions. Secondly, clients may have limited control over their everyday lives, with limited opportunity to negotiate change with their informal and formal sources of support. This review suggests that it is important to consider the interpersonal context of therapy both to ensure effective work within sessions and to enable real change in clients' everyday lives. The review draws upon Vygotsky's theory of the zone of proximal development and ecological models of change to consider the challenges of establishing collaborative relationships and the potential to use CBT within a broad psychosocial model. The aim is to offer a helpful framework for practitioners and to identify directions for future research.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this article is to provide guidance and recommendations for children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and anxiety, including suggestions for assessment and intervention. CONCLUSIONS Children with ASD are at increased risk for developing clinical anxiety symptoms. Anxiety symptoms can impact school performance, peer relationships, and family functioning. Emerging clinical research has demonstrated the potential positive impact of modified cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce anxiety symptoms in children with ASD. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Modifications necessary to make cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocols accessible to children with ASD are presented, along with specific suggestions for evaluating and treating anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
The experience of stressful social interactions, negative causal attributions, and the use of maladaptive coping efforts help maintain depression over time in the general population. We investigated whether a similar experience occurs among adults with mild intellectual disability. We compared the frequency and stress impact of such interactions, identified causal attributions for these interactions, and determined the coping strategies of 47 depressed and 47 nondepressed adults with mild intellectual disability matched on subject characteristics. The depressed group reported a higher frequency and stress impact of stressful social interactions, more negative attribution style, and more avoidant and less active coping strategies did than the nondepressed group. Findings have implications for theory building and development of psychotherapies to treat depression.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This paper reviews and summarises the literature on assessment, diagnosis and management of personality disorder in people with intellectual disability. It will proceed to argue the implications of a mental health nurse practitioner in clinical practice. BACKGROUND Personality disorder is a potentially severe and disabling condition causing significant distress as well as presenting considerable challenges for service providers. Diagnosis in people with intellectual disability is controversial. However, it is considered that this population is at greater risk of these disorders. There is, however, little research on which to base clinical interventions or service planning. DESIGN Systematic review. METHODS A literature search of electronic data was undertaken in April 2007 using CINAHL, AMED, Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Cochrane Library. Other sources included Google Scholar, hand searching of reference lists and texts and search of relevant websites. RESULTS The literature on personality disorder in intellectual disability is notable for its paucity. The limited evidence available suggests that this population is at greater risk of personality disorder and that assessment and diagnosis is complex and often overshadowed by the intellectual disability. Few papers address treatment, there are no trial-based studies and it has not been established whether results can be extrapolated from research in the general population. CONCLUSIONS The issue of personality disorder in people with intellectual disability is shrouded in controversy with a dearth of robust evidence to inform assessment or therapeutic care. Personality disorder does, however, provide a basis for decisions on type and intensity of support required for this population who have significant levels of unmet need. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Some people with an intellectual disability and personality disorder can live in the community with specialist support. The mental health nurse practitioner has the potential to provide people with dual diagnostic support needed to enhance the capacity of the service system to meet the needs of this complex and difficult population.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To summarize recent research on psychosocial interventions for people with intellectual disabilities and mental ill-health. RECENT FINDINGS Psychosocial interventions for people with intellectual disabilities and mental ill-health are poorly developed. Recent research has focused upon individual therapeutic interventions and the evaluation of structures for the delivery of services to people with intellectual disabilities and mental ill-health. There is little research that has examined psychosocial interventions with carers or families, and the impact of housing, leisure and employment for this group of people. SUMMARY As people with intellectual disabilities are increasingly recognized as having severe and enduring mental ill-health, the development of an evidence base for psychosocial intervention is of considerable importance.
