Elevated CO2 response of photosynthesis depends on ozone concentration in aspen

The effect of elevated CO(2) and O(3) on apparent quantum yield (varphi), maximum photosynthesis (P(max)), carboxylation efficiency (V(cmax)) and electron transport capacity (J(max)) at different canopy locations was studied in two aspen (Populus tremuloides) clones of contrasting O(3) tolerance. Local light climate at every leaf was characterized as fraction of above-canopy photosynthetic photon flux density (%PPFD). Elevated CO(2) alone did not affect varphi or P(max), and increased J(max) in the O(3)-sensitive, but not in the O(3)-tolerant clone. Elevated O(3) decreased leaf chlorophyll content and all photosynthetic parameters, particularly in the lower canopy, and the negative impact of O(3) increased through time. Significant interaction effect, whereby the negative impact of elevated O(3) was exaggerated by elevated CO(2) was seen in Chl, N and J(max), and occurred in both O(3)-tolerant and O(3)-sensitive clones. The clonal differences in the level of CO(2)xO(3) interaction suggest a relationship between photosynthetic acclimation and background O(3) concentration.

Scaling ozone effects from seedlings to forest trees

Biospheric ozone has become a widely distributed air pollutant, and a growing body of research indicates that ozone impacts forest health and productivity. Ozone effects are mediated by the ozone concentration present in the external environment and the movement of ozone into the leaf via the stoma. The cumulative dose received by the plant is, in the simplest terms, a function of ambient ozone concentration and stomatal conductance to water vapor. This relationship is important in understanding ozone flux into the leaf and subsequent ozone response in plants. Here, current progress in understanding ozone uptake in juvenile and mature trees is examined. Through an analysis of two long-term case studies, the significant uncertainty in assessing ozone effects on forests is pinpointed to be the scaling of ozone sensitivity from controlled seedling studies to large forest trees. A rigorous statistical and monitoring approach, which includes ozone uptake as a cause variable, may provide the missing information on processes that are known to be important to risk assessment of ozone impacts on forest trees. Limitations and perspectives about scaling ozone impacts in trees

We review the need for scaling effects of ozone (O3) from juvenile to mature forest trees, identify the knowledge presently available, and discuss limitations in scaling efforts. Recent findings on O3/soil nutrient and O3/CO2 interactions from controlled experiments suggest consistent scaling patterns for physiological responses of individual leaves to whole-plant growth, carbon allocation, and water use efficiency of juvenile trees. These findings on juvenile trees are used to develop hypotheses that are relevant to scaling O3 effects to mature trees, and these hypotheses are examined with respect to existing research on differences in response to O3 between juvenile and mature trees. Scaling patterns of leaf-level physiological response to O3 have not been consistent in previous comparisons between juvenile and mature trees. We review and synthesize current understanding of factors that may cause such inconsistent scaling patterns, including tree-size related changes in environment, stomatal conductance, O3 uptake and exposure. carbon allocation to defense, repair, and compensation mechanisms, and leaf production phenology. These factors should be considered in efforts to scale O3 responses during tree ontogeny. Free-air O3 fumigation experiments of forest canopies allow direct assessments of O3 impacts on physiological processes of mature trees, and provide the opportunity to test current hypotheses about ontogenetic variation in O3 sensitivity by comparing O3 responses across tree-internal scales and ontogeny.

Environmental control of stomatal conductance in forest trees of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

To determine if stomatal conductance (g(s)) of forest trees could be predicted from measures of leaf microclimate, diurnal variability in in situ g(s) was measured in black cherry (Prunus serotina), red maple (Acer rubrum), and northern red oak (Quercus rubra). Relative to overstory trees, understory saplings exhibited little diurnal variability in g(s) and ozone uptake. Depending on species and site, up to 30% of diurnal and seasonal variation in g(s )of overstory trees was explained by photosynthetically active radiation and vapor pressure deficit. Daily maximum g(s) was significantly related to soil moisture in overstory northern red oak and black cherry (R(2) ranged from 33 to 65%). Although g(s) was not fully predicted using instantaneous measures of leaf microclimate, ozone uptake of large forest trees was reduced by low soil moisture.

Growth and nutrition of Quercus rubra L. seedlings and mature trees after three seasons of ozone exposure

Seedling growth and nutritional status have been shown to be sensitive to ozone, but the influence of multi-season ozone exposure on mature tree growth and nutrition has not been examined. To determine if seedlings and mature trees were similarly affected by ozone exposure, growth and nutrient concentrations in northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) 4-year-old seedlings and 32-year-old mature trees were examined after treatment with subambient, ambient and twice ambient concentrations of ozone for three growing seasons. SUM00 values summed over the three growing seasons were 147, 255 and 507 ppm-h, respectively, for the subambient, ambient and twice ambient exposures. For mature trees, no influence of ozone treatment on lower stem diameter growth, stem growth within the mid-canopy and foliar biomass was observed. Seedling height was increased by ozone, but biomass and diameter were unaffected. A reduction in the specific leaf weight of leaves in response to ozone coincident with the loss of recurrent flushing was observed in seedlings. Ozone exposure reduced foliar nitrogen concentrations and increased woody tissue nutrient concentrations in seedlings and mature trees at the end of the third growing season. These results suggest an influence of ozone on retranslocation processes in seedlings and mature trees.
