Integration of a B chromosome into the A genome of a wasp

B chromosomes are genome symbionts, the presence of which in many eukaryote species is explained, in most cases, by their violation of Mendelian rules, usually based on meiotic or mitotic instability, leading to their accumulation in the germ line (drive). However, B chromosome integration into the genome as a regular member of the chromosome set should imply the loss of drive. A possible way of bypassing this difficulty is to regularize meiosis when the B chromosome is frequent in the population, in order to yield gametes with one B chromosome. In diploid organisms, this task needs to be achieved in the two sexes, but in haplodiploids the problem simplifies to only the diploid sex. We have found, to the authors' knowledge, the first evidence of a B chromosome that is regularizing its meiotic behaviour and limiting its number to one B chromosome per haploid genome, the same dosage as the standard (A) chromosomes, in the solitary wasp Trypoxylon albitarse. It suggests a possible mechanism for B chromosome integration as a regular member of the chromosome complement.

B Chromosomes in White Spruce

In Picea glauca , the White Spruce, supernumerary, B chromosomes were found in 48 out of 51 North American populations investigated. The B chromosomes are of two kinds. The more common (B1) is metacentric. The other (B2) has a subterminal centromere. Giemsa staining at metaphase shows no trace of constitutive heterochromatin in B chromosomes, yet at interphase the B chromosomes are heteropycnotic. It is argued that the capacity for heterochromatization of the B chromosomes at interphase may be associated with gene inactivation as in the X chromosomes of female mammals. B2 is found in western regions only, i. e. west of the 95th meridian. B1 is found in both western and eastern regions but its frequency varies substantially among populations. In general there is a reduction in B frequency from east to west in both western and eastern regions of North America. Experimental results support the view that such variation is adaptive and, in part at least, caused by the differential mortality of plants with and without B chromosomes in particular environments. Evidence is presented which indicates that B2 was introduced into White Spruce following hybridization with Engelmann Spruce.

Annual cycles in the incidence of b chromosomes in the grasshopper Myrmeleotettix maculatus (acrididae: orthoptera)

The frequency of B chromosomes has been determined for several stages in the grasshopper life-cycle, over three generations, in three natural populations spanning a steep cline in East Anglia. This has revealed a rise in B frequency in prediapause eggs, a fall during the winter in the embryos and a rise in the early nymphs in certain situations. The causes of these effects are discussed and also their importance, along with meiotic drive, in maintaining an environmentally correlated cline of stable adult B frequencies.

Population cytology of the genus Phaulacridium

Ten of the 27 populations of Phaulacridium marginale collected from South Island, New Zealand, during the 1973 meiotic season were polymorphic for extra heterochromatin. This was present either as B chromosomes or as super-numerary segments on the shortest autosomes. In some populations both polymorphisms were present simultaneously, sometimes at high frequencies. Three different types of B chromosome were seen; large telocentric, small telocentric and small metacentric isochromosomes though only one type was seen in any one population. Segments on the telocentric S9 and S10 chromosomes were located distally. On the S11 chromosome, however, the extra segment was present as a short arm, thus making the chromosome submetacentric. This latter situation is similar to that in the related species Ph vittatum. The frequency of B's in the OM population appeared to be stable over years and there was no indication of any meiotic "drive" or "drag" in the males. The frequency of occurrence of B chromosomes in a population correlated negatively with annual rainfall (low B frequencies in regions of high rainfall). Neither type of extra heterochromatin had any significant effect on either mean cell chiasma frequency or on log variance of this metric. Possible synergism between B's and segments is discussed from the preliminary analysis of the OM population. The probable origins and age of the polymorphisms are discussed in detail.

Gene flow and population differentiation

There are many possible spatial patterns of selection and gene flow that can produce a given cline structure; the actual geography of natural selection and gene flow must be worked out before an attempt is made to explain a given natural cline in terms of a model. The results of experimental and theoretical models show that it is possible for local differentiation to evolve parapatrically in spite of considerable gene flow if the selection gradients are relatively uniform. Irregularities in environmental gradients increase the sensitivity of clines to the effects of gene flow in proportion to the increase in the differences in gene frequencies between the emigrants and the demes receiving the immigrants. It is not necessary for a sharp spatial environmental change to be present for distinct differentiation to occur. In some cases even a gentle environmental gradient can give rise to marked spatial differentiation along a genetically continuous series of demes; such environmental differences may be below the practical limits of resolution in field studies. Any asymmetry in gene flow does not lead to dedifferentiation if the environmental gradient is smooth; it merely shifts the position of the transition zone between the differentiated areas from that which would be expected if there were no asymmetry. Abrupt geographic differences in gene, genotype, or morph frequencies should not, therefore, be interpreted as evidence for environmental changes in the immediate vicinity of the steepest part of the cline; neither should they be interpreted as evidence for geographic barriers, sharp environmental differences, or sexual isolation among the differentiated groups of populations when there are no other sources of evidence for these phenomena. Gene flow may be unimportant in the differentiation of populations along environmental gradients.
