Analysis of influential factors associated with the smoking behavior of aboriginal schoolchildren in remote Taiwanese mountainous areas

The First Cigarette Smoking Experience and Future Smoking Behaviors Among Adolescents with Different Parental Risk: a Longitudinal Analysis in an Urban Iranian Population

BACKGROUND

Longitudinal research among Iranian adolescent smoking is limited. The current study aimed to investigate (1) the first smoking experience (FSE) and future smoking behaviors of adolescents with different parental risk factors and (2) the association between age of the FSE and future smoking behaviors over a 12-year follow-up.

METHOD

Based on Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) database, 1487 adolescents (12-18 years) with complete baseline parental data were recruited. Using two-step cluster analysis, families were classified as either high or low risk; these were based on parental risk factors including age, education, employment, and smoking status. Participants were examined four times in 12 years and their data were used for survival analysis. After exclusion of 24 cases who were smokers at baseline, Cox proportional hazard modeling was used to evaluate the effect of parental clusters on the FSE in 1463 nonsmoking adolescents who completed all prospective follow-ups. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the effect of the age of FSE on future smoking behaviors.

RESULTS

The mean age of adolescents was 14.63 ± 2.07 years at baseline. Adolescents in the high-risk cluster group were 49% more likely to try smoking for their first time, and 55% more likely to smoke in the future. Compared with girls, boys had 83% higher chance of trying their first cigarette. Moreover, 1-year delay in the FSE resulted in 25% reduction in the probability of smoking in the future.

CONCLUSION

The findings show that compared with adolescents living in low-risk families, teenagers living in high-risk families are at greater risk of smoking at an earlier age; therefore, this group could benefit from gender- and culture specific preventive interventions.

Association between Possibility of Purchasing Cigarettes and E-cigarette Experience among Korean Adolescent Smokers

BACKGROUND

To aim of this study was to examine the association between perceived possibility of purchasing cigarettes and e-cigarette experience among adolescents who currently smoke cigarettes.

METHODS

Data were derived from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey; a total of 29,169 current smokers participated. The dependent variable was e-cigarette experience in the previous month. Analyses included χ2 test and survey logistic regression.

RESULTS

A perceived easy possibility of purchasing cigarettes increased the odds of e-cigarette experience (odds ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.33) compared to when it was perceived as impossible. An easy possibility of purchasing cigarettes increased the odds of e-cigarettes experience among males aged 12-15 or 17 years compared to when it was impossible to purchase cigarettes.

CONCLUSION

A perceived easy possibility of purchasing cigarettes was more likely to increase e-cigarette experience among adolescents. Laws restricting adolescents' access to e-cigarettes must be strengthened.

Determinants of cigarette smoking among school adolescents on the island of Java, Indonesia

BACKGROUND

The Integrated Model of Change has successfully explained the behavior change process. Cigarette smoking is a social phenomenon, which needs to be understood for devising effective preventive strategies.

OBJECTIVES

The study aims to apply the Integrated Model of Change to determine predictive factors of cigarette smoking behavior among school adolescents in Indonesia.

METHODS

A school-based cross-sectional study was designed to collect data in Banten, Indonesia. A total of 698 students from eight high schools were recruited by multi-stage cluster sampling. The association between cigarette smoking and the independent variables was examined by multiple logistic regressions.

RESULTS

The majority of respondents (86.4%) were between the ages of 15 and 17 years (Mean=16.4 years; SD=1.01). Approximately half (48.8%) of the students ever tried a cigarette while 29.6% were current smokers. Curiosity was reported as the main reason for experimenting with cigarettes (32%). The significant factors regarding current cigarette smoking were attitude [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.68], social norms (AOR=12.80), self-efficacy (AOR=15.85), and accessibility (AOR=4.39).

CONCLUSION

The study revealed social influence and self-efficacy that were strongly associated with cigarette smoking can help authorities in guiding possible intervention programs for school adolescents.

Area disparity in children's perceptions of access to tobacco and cigarette purchasing experiences in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

Adolescents who perceive easy access to tobacco are more likely to acquire cigarettes and experience smoking. This study assesses area disparities in perceptions of access to tobacco and cigarette purchasing experiences among schoolchildren.

METHODS

Data on children's tobacco-related variables were obtained from the Control of School-Aged Children Smoking Study Survey in Taiwan. A stratified random sample of 65 primary schools was included. Polytomous logistic regression analyzed factors associated with tobacco accessibility and purchasing experiences.

RESULTS

More than half of the children reported that tobacco retailers often or always sold cigarettes to them. Rural and mountainous children were more likely to have access to cigarettes (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.01 and 3.01, respectively) and have cigarette purchasing experiences (AOR = 3.06 and 13.76, respectively). Cigarette purchasing from retailers (AOR = 1.84) was significantly associated with children's perceptions of access to tobacco. The factors associated with cigarette purchasing experiences were families smoking (AOR = 8.90), peers smoking (AOR = 2.22), frequent exposure to entertainer smoking on TV and in films (AOR = 2.15), and perceived access to tobacco (AOR = 1.51).

CONCLUSIONS

The health department should strictly enforce laws regarding retailers selling tobacco to underage, particularly in remote areas. Schools can reinforce tobacco-use prevention messages.
