Mycoplasmosis in racing pigeons

Mycoplasma gallisepticum experimental infection and tissue distribution in chickens, sparrows and pigeons

The most effective approaches to control the spread of Mycoplasma gallisepticum include strict biosecurity measures, continuous surveillance and eradication of infected flocks. The rapid expansion of the poultry industry worldwide in restricted geographical areas and severe economic losses due to M. gallisepticum outbreaks make it crucial to identify and better control the vectors responsible for the transmission of the disease. In the present study we evaluated the susceptibility of sparrows and pigeons to M. gallisepticum and the tissue distribution of M. gallisepticum in these species as compared with chickens. This information will further define the role of these common avian species in M. gallisepticum transmission. Twenty-six chickens, pigeons, and sparrows were experimentally inoculated with a field strain of M. gallisepticum and were monitored for the development of clinical signs, seroconversion, productive infection by culture, and M. gallisepticum distribution in their tissues by immunohistochemistry. All M. gallisepticum-inoculated chickens showed mild respiratory signs, seroconverted (haemagglutination inhibition geometric mean titre = 494) and shed M. gallisepticum in their tracheas. M. gallisepticum antigens were observed at high levels by immunohistochemistry in their tracheas, conjunctivas, nasal turbinates, and air sacs. The pigeons and sparrows did not show clinical signs or seroconvert but M. gallisepticum was reisolated up to 7 days post inoculation from pigeons and intermittently from sparrows. M. gallisepticum antigens were observed at low level in the conjunctiva of some pigeons and sparrows, as well as in the trachea of some sparrows. We conclude that pigeons and sparrows are partially susceptible to M. gallisepticum infection but do not seroconvert or maintain a steady carrier state similar to chickens and that these species may play a role in M. gallisepticum transmission between poultry farms as mechanical vectors.

Avian diseases which affect egg production and quality

This chapter addresses diseases and syndromes which have been shown, or are reported, to have adverse effects on egg production and quality. However, any disease of poultry can adversely affect egg production and quality indirectly, by affecting the health of the bird. The main topics are the effect on egg production and quality of bacteria (Salmonella, Mycoplasma, Escherichia coli, infectious coryza, Ornithobacterium, Gallibacterium, spirochaetosis), viruses (infectious bronchitis virus, egg drop syndrome, swollen head syndrome, avian encephalomyelitis, influenza, Newcastle disease, laryngotracheitis), syndromes (fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome, cage layer osteoporosis) and toxic agents. A short section on clinical perspectives reports on information obtained from practising poultry veterinarians as such observations can provide valuable starting points for future research.

Detection of Mycoplasma synoviae in clinically normal pheasants

Mycoplasma synoviae was isolated from the tracheas of seven clinically normal pheasants found in the vicinity of a chicken farm infected with M synoviae, but not from 120 pheasants and partridges with respiratory disease. When specimens were examined by the polymerase chain reaction only two additional pheasants infected with M synoviae were identified, one healthy and one diseased.

Isolation of mycoplasmas from fantail pigeons

Isolation of mycoplasmas from the oropharynxes of 60 fantails reared under natural conditions at different zoological parks in Miyazaki prefecture was carried out. Mycoplasma columbinum, M. columborale and M. columbinasale were isolated from 28 (46.7%), 22 (36.7%), and 1 (1.7%) of 60 oropharynxes, respectively, but no Mycoplasma was isolated from 5 cloacas tested. Ureaplasma was not isolated from any of the 28 oropharynxes or 5 cloacas examined. We report that 41 (68.3%) of 60 fantails had one or two species of mycoplasmas in their oropharynxes, and make the first confirmation of M. columbinasale inhabiting a Japanese pigeon.

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of erythromycin in pigeons (Columba livia)

Tissue and plasma concentrations were determined after intravenous and oral administration of erythromycin to pigeons to establish the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the drug. A short mean half-life of elimination of 0.9 h was found. The relative bioavailability after direct crop administration of erythromycin thiocyanate or erythromycin ethylsuccinate at a dosage rate of 100 mg/kg was less than 10%. At a drug concentration in drinking water of 1 g/l, erythromycin plasma levels were barely detectable, whilst lung and trachea concentrations reached a maximum of 1.6 micrograms/ml. Even after crop administration of 100-mg/kg erythromycin thiocyanate, low plasma levels were obtained, whilst lung and trachea concentrations were substantially higher. Prescribed drinking-water regimens seemed unable to yield therapeutic tissue concentrations. Only individual crop administration seemed an appropriate medication method. The use of erythromycin ethylsuccinate did not present any advantage in comparison with erythromycin thiocyanate.
