Multifocal encephalopathy in Limousin calves

Severe subacute necrotizing encephalopathy (Leigh-like syndrome) in American Staffordshire bull terrier dogs

Seventeen American Staffordshire bull terrier puppies, 6-8 weeks of age, from seven closely related litters, presented with rapidly progressive central vestibular neurological signs. Previously reported hereditary ataxias in the breed, including l-2 hydroxyglutaric aciduria and cerebellar cortical degeneration, as well as thiamine deficiency, were excluded. Elevated lactate levels and lactate:pyruvate ratios gave supporting evidence of a defect of the respiratory chain or Leigh-like syndrome. Histopathology in all cases showed a bilaterally symmetrical necrotizing encephalopathy, with malacia of the neuropil centred on the vestibular and olivary nuclei of the brainstem. This is the first documentation of a heritable rapidly progressive lethal necrotizing encephalopathy consistent with Leigh-like syndrome, in American Staffordshire bull terrier dogs.

A multifocal symmetrical necrotising encephalomyelopathy in Angus calves

OBJECTIVE

To define a neurological disorder in Angus calves.

PROCEDURE

Clinical and pathological examinations were performed on affected Angus calves from a herd experiencing 1% annual mortality from neurological disease.

CLINICAL SIGNS

Angus calves developed ataxia, nystagmus, strabismus, muscular tremors, opisthotonus, bruxism, hyperaesthesia, tetanic spasms and episodic convulsions at 2 to 6 weeks of age. Death occurred 4 to 7 days after the onset of clinical signs. GROSS PATHOLOGY: Bilaterally symmetrical, yellow-grey foci were present in the medulla oblongata.

HISTOPATHOLOGY

Symmetrical degenerative lesions affected the dorsal vagal motor, lateral cuneate and olivary nuclei in the medulla oblongata and sometimes the spinal cord, substantia nigra and cerebellar peduncles. Malacia was characterised by spongiosis of the neuropile, vascular hyperplasia, infiltration of gitter cells, spheroid formation and delayed degeneration of neurones.

CONCLUSION

Angus calves may develop a multifocal symmetrical necrotising encephalomyelopathy.

A presumed inherited spongiform leucoencephalomyelopathy of Romney lambs in New Zealand

This paper records a unique ovine encephalomyelopathy seen on several farms in the Otago Region of New Zealand. It occurred in 2-3 month-old Romney lambs as a rapidly progressive posterior paresis leading to flaccid paralysis. Pathologically, it was characterised by severe spongy vacuolation of white matter in both brain and spinal cord. It is suspected that the condition is inherited.

Spinal dysmyelination in new-born brown Swiss x Braunvieh calves

In four new-born Braunvieh calves suffering from connate recumbency and body tremor, a hitherto not described myelination disorder of the spinal cord was examined. Bilateral symmetric hypo- as well as demyelination in several spinal tracts were the most conspicuous findings, affecting the ascending gracile funiculus, the ascending dorsolateral spinocerebellar tract, and the mainly descending sulcomarginal tract. Deficient myelin production, loss of myelin, consecutive axonal degenerations, and prominent astrogliosis within these tracts were the histological hallmarks of the disease. This possibly inherited primary myelination disorder of the spinal cord differs markedly from known hereditary neurological diseases in Brown Swiss and Braunvieh cattle, respectively, i.e. the weaver-syndrome and the spinal muscular atrophy.

Congenital tremor in Holstein Friesian-cattle

In a female family line of Holstein-Friesian cattle a series of trembling calves was born within a period of ten years. All trembling animals were male; female calves appeared normal. At necropsy of one calf severe degenerative lesions of spinal cord and brain white matter were observed. Both myelin and axons were lost and some macrophages occurred within digestion chambers. Obviously degenerated neurones were not found. The lesion was interpreted as a single recessive sex-linked hereditary trait.

A primary demyelinating disorder of young cattle

The clinical signs and neuropathological changes are described in six Limousin X calves that, at about one month after birth, showed signs of blindness, nystagmus, rotation of the eyes, opisthotonos, hyperprotraction of the forelegs and, in one case, apparent seizures. Pathologically there was necrosis of the optic chiasma and focal areas of myelin sheath vacuolation or demyelination in certain areas of the brain, especially in the cerebellar peduncles. In one animal, kept alive for 7 months, there was remyelination by Schwann cells of some demyelinated axons in the focal cerebellar lesions, while other axons remained demyelinated. There was no evidence of oligodendrocyte remyelination. The cause of the condition was not determined but a genetic association is likely.
