Osseous metaplasia in the conjunctiva of a horse presenting with recurrent ulcerative keratitis

Calcification and osseous metaplasia of the meibomian glands of a horse

OBJECTIVE

To report the clinical history, surgical management, and histologic findings of meibomian gland calcification and osseous metaplasia in a horse.

ANIMAL STUDIED

A 21-year-old Selle Français gelding presented with a 9 months history of blepharitis, blepharospasm, and epiphora affecting the right eye. The horse was diagnosed with meibomianitis and impaction with associated granulomas, but not treated surgically for 6 years.

PROCEDURES

Physical and ophthalmic examinations, and systemic bloodwork were performed. A diamond burr debridement was performed on a corneal ulceration, and meibomian gland nodules were excised and examined histologically.

RESULTS

Multiple firm concretions were associated with the palpebral conjunctiva of each eyelid. The largest nodule (5 × 4 × 10 mm) was excised from the lower right eyelid. Histology revealed dilated meibomian ducts with mineralized inspissated secretions surrounded by fibrosis and osseous metaplasia. Following nodule excision and corneal ulcer resolution, no blepharospasm or epiphora recurred for a follow-up period of 15 months.

CONCLUSION

Calcification and osseous metaplasia of the meibomian glands was identified in a Selle Français gelding. It is suspected that inspissated meibomian secretions led to a local granulomatous reaction with secondary dystrophic calcification and osseous metaplasia.

Conjunctival calcinosis circumscripta in a dog: Treatment combining surgical resection and amniotic membrane grafting

This report describes the clinical features, histopathology, and surgical treatment of a case of conjunctival calcification in a 5-month-old female English Setter, referred with a history of recurrent conjunctivitis in the right eye (OD). The ophthalmic findings were limited to multifocal white plaques embedded in a markedly inflamed conjunctiva of the eyelids and the anterior nictitating membrane OD. Calcification was suspected. The blood cell count, blood chemical profile, and urinalysis were within normal limits, and long-bone radiographs appeared normal. After removal of the affected area by means of a large conjunctivectomy, cryopreserved canine amniotic membrane (AM) was transplanted to fill in the defect. Multifocal ectopic calcium deposits in the conjunctival lamina propria were confirmed histopathologically. The postoperative healing was uneventful, and no recurrence was observed during a follow-up period of five years. Conjunctival mineralization is uncommon in canine ophthalmology, and the cause remained undetermined in the present case, for which AM transplantation was able to promote conjunctival healing after a large surgical excision.

Placental osseous metaplasia associated with abortion in a mare: case report

ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe a case of marked osseous metaplasia in the placenta associated with abortion in a mare. A 19-year-old Campolina mare with a history of multiple parturitions and absence of reproductive failure, aborted a fetus with approximately six months of gestation. There were no gross changes in the fetus and the placenta. Microscopically, there was multifocal replacement of fetal connective mesenchyme of the chorionic villi with well differentiated and partially mineralized osseous tissue (confirmed by von Kossa staining). To further characterize the collagenous component of the lesion, sections of the placenta were stained with Masson’s trichrome and Picrosirius red. Osseous tissue deposition had abundance of type I collagen. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of osseous metaplasia in the placenta of a mare associated with abortion at mid gestation, presumably due to placentary insufficiency.
