Abstract
The objective of this study is to assess obesity prevalence and characterize European nursing home (NH) residents with obesity comprehensively. Cross-sectional nutritionDay data from 2016 to 2021. Descriptive characterization of European NH residents ≥65 years with and without obesity. Binomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with obesity. A total of 11 327 residents (73.8% female, 86.4 ± 7.9 years, mean body mass index 25.3 ± 5.4 kg/m2) from 12 countries were analysed. Obesity prevalence was 17.7%, mostly class I (13.0%). Taking ≥5 drugs/day (OR 1.633; 95% confidence intervals 1.358-1.972), female sex (1.591; 1.385-1.832), being bed/chair-bound (1.357; 1.146-1.606), and having heart/circulation/lung disease (1.276; 1.124-1.448) was associated with increased obesity risk, older age (0.951; 0.944-0.958), mild (0.696; 0.601-0.805) and severe (0.591; 0.488-0.715) dementia, eating less than ¾ of lunch on nutritionDay (0.669; 0.563-0.793), needing assistance for eating (0.686; 0.569-0.825), and being identified by NH staff at risk for (0.312; 0.255-0.380) or with malnutrition (0.392; 0.236-0.619) decreased obesity risk. Almost one in five residents in European NH participating in nutritionDay is affected by obesity. Through a wide exploratory analysis, including data from 12 European countries, we confirmed previous findings and identified additional factors associated with obesity that should be considered in the daily care of affected residents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is an underestimated geriatric problem, with a high prevalence in institutionalized older adults. The identification of risk factors for malnutrition in elderly individuals must be a priority for governmental organizations worldwide. METHODS A total of 98 institutionalized seniors were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. For the assessment of risk factors, sociodemographic characteristics and health-related information were collected. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short-Form test was used to assess malnutrition in the sample population. RESULTS A significantly greater proportion of women than men were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. In addition, the comparative analysis revealed that comorbidity, arthritis, balance impairment, dementia and fall episodes with serious injuries were significantly more frequent in the older adults categorized as malnourished or at risk of malnutrition than in those categorized as well-nourished. CONCLUSIONS Multivariable regression analysis revealed that being female, having a poor cognitive status and experiencing falls with injuries are the main independent factors influencing nutritional status in institutionalized older adults living in a rural area of Portugal.

Abstract
Utilizing automatic daily body weight (BW) measurements may be helpful for assessing nutritional status and detecting underlying diseases particularly in older people who require nursing care. This preliminary study aimed to verify effectiveness of eating assistance for maintaining BW in older people using a contact-free load cells under the bed (Bed Sensor System: BSS). BW was measured every night for 3 months in eight nursing home older people with severe cognitive and physical dysfunctions. Body composition of the subject's trunk and each limb was measured using a segmented multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA). A monthly BW loss was estimated as a slope of linear regression of the daily BW plot. BSS successfully measured daily BW for the study period in all participants. The 4 residents with eating assistance gained slightly more weight, while the 4 residents without eating assistance lost weight. There was a significant difference between the two groups in the monthly BW change (- 0.79 ± 0.51 kg/month versus 0.20 ± 0.49 kg/month, P = 0.030). None of the BIA-derived parameters was associated with the monthly BW change. BSS revealed effectiveness of eating assistance to maintain BW in nursing home residents with severe cognitive and physical dysfunctions.

Abstract
Risk of malnutrition in elderly patients in acute hospitals - implications for nursing practice Abstract. Background: The risk of malnutrition is increased in advanced age and acute illness, and its assessment and needs-based support are part of the responsibility of nursing. Research question / objective: The following research question aims to analyse the nutritional status and possible correlations with nursing diagnoses and other patient characteristics from persons who are 80 years old and older: Which patterns in the sense of clusters can be identified concerning calorie and protein requirements and other patient characteristics? METHODS Explorative cross-sectional study with cluster analysis based on food intake protocols and nursing documentation. Patients from surgery, internal medicine and university acute geriatric care wards were included in this non-probability sample. RESULTS Four groups were formed out of the data from 135 patients (protein requirement coverage): Well-nourished (116 %), sufficiently-nourished (77 %), insufficiently-nourished (59 %) and poorly-nourished (40 %). A significant correlation between calorie and protein requirement coverage and treatment area has been shown. CONCLUSIONS The degree of coverage of protein- and energy requirement is related to the treatment area and consequently to its team culture and treatment concept. Based on the characteristics of the well-nourished, a positive effect of interprofessional cooperation and systematic recording of the risk of malnutrition, as implemented in the treatment area of acute geriatric care, might be concluded.

Abstract
Background/Objectives Malnutrition (MN) in nursing home (NH) residents is associated with poor outcome. In order to identify those with a high risk of incident MN, the knowledge of predictors is crucial. Therefore, we investigated predictors of incident MN in older NH-residents. Subjects/Methods NH-residents participating in the nutritionDay-project (nD) between 2007 and 2018, aged ≥65 years, with complete data on nutritional status at nD and after 6 months and without MN at nD. The association of 17 variables (general characteristics (n = 3), function (n = 4), nutrition (n = 1), diseases (n = 5) and medication (n = 4)) with incident MN (weight loss ≥ 10% between nD and follow-up (FU) or BMI (kg/m2) < 20 at FU) was analyzed in univariate generalized estimated equation (GEE) models. Significant (p < 0.1) variables were selected for multivariate GEE-analyses. Effect estimates are presented as odds ratios and their respective 99.5%-confidence intervals. Results Of 11,923 non-malnourished residents, 10.5% developed MN at FU. No intake at lunch (OR 2.79 [1.56–4.98]), a quarter (2.15 [1.56–2.97]) or half of the meal eaten (1.72 [1.40–2.11]) (vs. three-quarter to complete intake), the lowest BMI-quartile (20.0–23.0) (1.86 [1.44–2.40]) (vs. highest (≥29.1)), being between the ages of 85 and 94 years (1.46 [1.05; 2.03]) (vs. the youngest age-group 65–74 years)), severe cognitive impairment (1.38 [1.04; 1.84]) (vs. none) and being immobile (1.28 [1.00–1.62]) (vs. mobile) predicted incident MN in the final model. Conclusion 10.5% of non-malnourished NH-residents develop MN within 6 months. Attention should be paid to high-risk groups, namely residents with poor meal intake, low BMI, severe cognitive impairment, immobility, and older age.

Abstract
Long-term care (LTC) for older adults is an essential part of how health and social care systems respond to population ageing. Different long-term care systems in different countries have taken differing approaches to quality assurance, ranging from inspection-based regulatory systems to data and reporting-based regulatory systems. The significant variability in the ability of long-term care facilities to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased recognition of the role of standardized data in informing structured approaches to quality assurance. The International Prevalence Measurement of Care Quality (in Dutch: Landelijke Prevalentiemeting Zorgkwaliteit – LPZ) was developed to guide continuous quality improvement in long-term care facilities. This special article describes the LPZ tool, developed to provide input for the learning and improvement cycle of multidisciplinary teams in the LTC sector and to help improve care quality.

Abstract
Introduction: Cytoreductive surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS ± HIPEC) has positive effects on the survival of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) due to intra-abdominal tumors. Currently, the available literature on the safety of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol for PC, which is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, is insufficient. Aim: This study aimed to present our results from treating patients using the ERAS protocol for PC that developed due to intra-abdominal tumors. Material and Methods: The data of 120 consecutive patients with PC due to different etiologies of abdominal origin and who underwent CRS ± HIPEC were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups according to whether the ERAS protocol was applied. Information on demographics, length of hospital stay, cost, morbidity, and mortality was statistically compared between groups. Results: A total of 102 patients were included in the study. The first 40 patients did not undergo the ERAS protocol, whereas 62 patients did undergo the protocol. The mean length of hospital stay was 10 days in the non-ERAS group and 7 days in the ERAS group. The ERAS group was observed to have earlier mobilization, earlier gas and stool release, lower oral intake, and fewer respiratory problems than the non-ERAS group. Conclusion: CRS ± HIPEC has a positive effect on survival. The simultaneous application of the ERAS protocol with the aforementioned procedure has positive effects on intestinal motility and postoperative outcomes. In addition, this protocol may reduce costs by shortening the length of hospital stay.

Abstract
Malnutrition constitutes a serious and challenging problem in elderly care. In 2015, a Swedish regulation that aims to prevent and treat malnutrition came into effect. This study set out to explore associations between level of adoption of the regulation reported as: no, started, yes, in a previous survey, and registrations in a national quality registry. Registry data on screening and actions extracted from the first trimester in 2014 (n=18967), 2016 (n=20318) and 2017 (n= 25669) represented 209, 197 and 199 of 290 Swedish municipalities respectively. A repeated measures ANOVA showed that there was no effect on screened nutritional status, Pearson's chi-square that there were minor differences in types of actions, and regression analysis that the number of actions increased on average by 0.3 due to a higher level of adoption of the regulation. Over the years studied, five actions were prominent regardless of level of adoption or screened nutritional status. Hence, to date, no firm conclusions regarding effects of the regulation can be drawn. Despite the regulatory nature, it appear as if the regulation and the level of adoption reported so far is routine in theory, although not yet leveraged to an implemented practice visible in the quality registry but instead decoupled from practice.
