Abstract
PURPOSE The premenstrual symptoms (PMSs) are a common health issue affecting women of reproductive age and are associated with various physiological, psychological, and situational factors. Newly graduated nurses, when suddenly exposed to excessive workloads and shift work, may experience disturbances such as sleep disorders, fatigue, depression, and stress. These factors are related to PMS, and their occurrence varies. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the changes in PMS and its risk factors among newly graduated nurses across shift work periods, and investigate the longitudinal relationships between PMS and its risk factors based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. METHODS This study constituted a secondary data analysis and employed a prospective longitudinal design. Newly graduated nurses were assessed three times: before starting shift work, six months after initiating shift work, and 18 months thereafter. Physiological (age, body mass index, alcohol consumption, dietary behavior), psychological (sleep quality, fatigue, depression, stress, life satisfaction), and situational (social support) factors were included as PMS-related factors. RESULTS PMS worsened six months after the initiation of shift work compared with those before, and this aggravation persisted even after 18 months of shift work (p < .001). Age (p = .043), sleep quality (p = .004), and fatigue (p < .001) were associated with PMS. An interaction between time and depression that affected PMS was observed (p = .021). CONCLUSION Newly graduated nurses need to pay attention to the exacerbation of PMS after initiating shift work. Interventions to improve sleep quality and reduce fatigue are crucial for novice nurses, irrespective of shiftwork duration. Additionally, it is important to assess depressive symptoms before starting shift work and implement early interventions. Furthermore, the need for interventions addressing depression escalates with the increase in shiftwork duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether recruit paramedics adapt their sleep behaviour during the first 12-months of shift work and to identify sleep behaviours that are associated with better shift work tolerance (SWT) after 12-months of shift work. METHODS Recruit paramedics (n = 105; Mage = 25.81 years; 51.38% female) were evaluated before (baseline), and after six- and 12-months of shift work. At each timepoint, participants completed questionnaires evaluating their mental health and sleep. Participants also underwent 14 days of sleep and shift monitoring (sleep/work diaries and actigraphy) at each timepoint to examine sleep behaviours, including sleep opportunity (SO), sleep regularity and number of sleep episodes. RESULTS Linear mixed models found SO increased (on day shifts and rest days), and sleep regularity decreased between baseline and follow-up timepoints. There were no changes in SO (on day shifts, nightshifts, and rest days) or sleep regularity between six- and 12-months of shift work. Latent profile analysis at 12-months follow-up identified high (n = 52), medium (n = 27), and low (n = 9) SWT levels (measured via depression, anxiety, insomnia, sleep quality and sleep efficiency) in paramedics. Reduced sleep regularity (i.e., more irregular sleep) between six- and 12-months of work and prioritising major sleep (rather than naps) at six-months predicted high SWT. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest clear SWT levels exist early in paramedics' careers whereby symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia were the strongest contributors to SWT. New paramedics' sleep behaviours, including sleep regularity and prioritisation of longer sleep between nightshifts, may play an important role in influencing how paramedics tolerate shift work.

Abstract
Promoting health in the workplace is a national and international public health priority, and health promotion is a central aspect of the nursing role. However, nurses' knowledge of health promotion does not always translate to self-care and there are barriers to some aspects of self-care at work, such as healthy eating. Evidence suggests that rates of overweight and obesity in nurses are relatively high and commensurate with the general population, which has implications for their health and well-being and their delivery of health promotion to patients. This article discusses health in the workplace and some of the evidence on overweight and obesity among nurses, including how this may influence their health promotion practice. The author also considers barriers and enablers to nurses' healthy eating at work and suggests some approaches that individual nurses and healthcare organisations can take to improve healthy eating.

Abstract
AIM A rigorous examination of the occupational features across cultures helps draw policy recommendations for nurses' quality care practices and good health. This study aimed to explore the differences in work characteristics and health status between Korean and US hospital nurses. DESIGN For this comparative secondary data analysis study, we constructed a dataset with 304 pairs of nurses from Korea and the United States, matched by age and gender. METHODS We used the data from the 2020 Korean Hospital Nurses Health Behaviors and Health Status study, collected from May to July 2020, and the Nurse Worklife and Wellness Study (NWWS), conducted between November 2020 and February 2021. RESULTS Compared to nurses in the United States, Korean nurses rated their job-related conditions much lower, had lower intentions to stay in their current workplace and were less satisfied with their jobs. Korean nurses reported that organizational support and employee health resources were less prevalent and their levels of healthy behaviour practice and health status were lower than their US counterparts. Nurses in Korea require better practice environments and employee health support. Adequate workload and staffing levels are needed to improve job conditions for Korean nurses. Organizational support and employee health resources should always be accessible at nurses' workplaces.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration CRD42022309827) aimed to describe how shift work impacts new workers' sleep, mental health, and physical health during the transition to shift work and to consolidate information regarding predictors of shift work tolerance (SWT) during this transition period. Inclusion criteria included: new shift workers; sleep, mental health, or physical health outcomes; prospective study design with the first timepoint assessing workers within three months of starting shift work; and written in English. Searches from six databases returned 12,172 articles as of August 2023. The final sample included 48 papers. Publication quality and risk of bias was assessed using the critical appraisal skills program. Forty-five studies investigated longitudinal changes in sleep, mental health, or physical health outcomes and 29 studies investigated predictors of SWT (i.e., better sleep, mental and physical health). Sleep and mental health outcomes worsened following the onset of shift work, while physical health did not significantly change. Pre-shift work mental health, sleep, and work characteristics predicted SWT later in workers' careers. Shift work adversely impacts new workers' sleep and mental health early in their career, and interventions before beginning shift work are needed to promote better SWT.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to understand the experiences and perceptions of newly graduated nurses in relation to resilience by providing an interpretive synthesis of the existing qualitative literature on this topic. BACKGROUND Resilience in newly graduated nurses has been associated with increased satisfaction and decreased turnover. As the experience of resilience is unique to each individual, qualitative studies are well suited to explore this concept, yet the existing data is heterogenous. DESIGN A qualitative metasynthesis was conducted using a meta-ethnographic approach. METHODS The search was performed using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global for the English literature and NDSL, KCI, RISS, KISS and DBpia for the Korean literature. The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research was used to assess the quality of studies. An a priori protocol was created and registered on the Open Science Framework (Randall & De Gagne, 2022). RESULTS The final review included seven articles published between 2008 and 2021. Three main themes were identified: (1) internal experience of resilience; (2) external sources of resilience; and (3) building resilience over time. Subthemes were also identified. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that resilience can be developed over time during the period of transition from student nurse to professional nurse and is impacted by personal and organizational influences. The promotion of resilience presents considerations and opportunities for health care leaders and administrators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses in tertiary hospitals are at high risk for depression. Understanding sleep quality and perceived stress may contribute to nurses' mental health and health-related nursing productivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of sleep quality and perceived stress on depressive symptoms among nurses in tertiary hospitals. METHODS A total of 2,780 nurses (overall response rate = 91.1%) were recruited through a cross-sectional survey in 23 tertiary hospitals in China. Questionnaires included the Self-Rating Depression Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale. Variables that were significant in Chi-square tests were further entered into binary logistic stepwise regression. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 60.3% (n = 1,676), of which 97.4% (n = 1,633) were female, and 77.8% were younger than 35 years (n = 1,304). Nurses who had moderate, poor, severe sleep quality and poor perceived pressure were more likely to be depressed. Master's degree, 6-10 years of work, and physical activity were protective factors, while the opposite was the case for shift work and high dissatisfaction. CONCLUSIONS More than half of nurses working in tertiary care hospitals reported depressive symptoms, and lower sleep quality and higher perceived stress were more associated with this. Perceived stress is an interesting concept, which may provide a new entry point for the well-known idea that there is a relationship between poor sleep quality and depression. It is possible to reduce depressive symptoms among public hospital nurses by providing information on sleep health and stress relief.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mechanisms leading to burnout, associated with high turnover in nursing, may start as early as in nursing school. Given health habits (e.g., diet, physical activity, and sleep) can exacerbate or lessen the impact of burnout, this study examined current barriers and facilitators to healthy diet, physical activity levels, and sleep among nursing undergraduates (UGs) and early-career nurses (ECNs). RESEARCH DESIGN Qualitative descriptive study. SAMPLE 25 nursing UGs and 25 ECNs (within 3 years of graduation) from a Southeastern college of nursing. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS After development of theory-informed interview guides, participants conducted interviews either in-person or by phone, which were audio-recorded and transcribed. Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis was used to analyze the transcripts. RESULTS All but one (aged 54) UG was in their early 20s and ECNs were in their early to mid-20s. Most participants were white, females. Time and stress were the strongest barriers among UGs and ECNs for adherence to healthy diet, physical activity, although stress did act as a facilitator for physical activity in a subset of both UGs and ECNs. Shiftwork was a common barrier to healthy behaviors among ECNs. CONCLUSION The fact that the more common and stronger barriers to healthier behaviors among UGs and ECNs were the same give credence to the idea that processes associated with burnout begin during or before nursing education and are persistent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are the largest health professional body globally. Despite the significant role they play in healthcare, nurses exhibit poor dietary habits and have high rates of chronic diseases. Understanding the factors underlying healthy eating for nurses in the workplace is important to implement effective interventions. OBJECTIVE To identify enablers and barriers related to healthy eating among nurses employed in a hospital setting. DESIGN A systematic literature review of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021290913). DATA SOURCES A comprehensive systematic search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest databases for papers published after January 2015. METHODS Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts of 4139 deduplicated studies, performed critical appraisals on eligible studies using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and extracted data relevant to the research question. This review includes papers that examined nurses' eating behaviours specifically, were conducted in a hospital setting and distinguished healthy eating from other behaviours. Data synthesis was conducted through descriptive summarisation of studies and enablers and barriers were classified according to the socio-ecological model. RESULTS A total of 29 studies were identified with 8024 participants. 8 studies were qualitative, 18 quantitative, and 3 were mixed method design. At an environmental level, barriers were high accessibility and availability of unhealthy foods, high cost and low availability of healthy foods and lack of storage and preparation facilities, while an enabler was close proximity to healthy options. Novel organisational enablers were considered roster planning which allowed for established routines around meals, and structured workplace programs that encouraged improvement in health behaviours, while barriers were shift work, inconsistent rosters and high work demands. An interpersonal enabler was supportive networks while barriers were work culture, social norms of celebrations and gifts of food from patients. Finally, intrapersonal barriers were stress and fatigue, personal values, beliefs, attitudes, and individual characteristics, with the latter two also acting as enablers. CONCLUSIONS This review identifies the complexity and interconnectedness of enablers and barriers to healthy eating across four domains of the socio-ecological model. Multi-faceted strategies which address factors across several domains are recommended for healthcare organisations to facilitate healthy eating among nurses. Further research is needed to assess these strategies and understand the extent to which eating behaviours can be improved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prototype analyses of well-being have identified central characteristics and prototypicality for New Zealand teachers, lawyers, adolescents, and work well-being of nurses. What has not yet been explored is the broad construct of well-being in intensive care nurses. AIMS To identify intensive care nurses' conceptions of general well-being and investigate whether their general well-being is prototypically organized. DESIGN Prototype analysis. METHODS Three linked studies conceptualize well-being in this prototype analysis. In study 1, nurses reported features of well-being. Study 2 investigated the organization of these features. Study 3 sought confirmation of prototypical organization. RESULTS Sixty-five New Zealand nurses participated. For study 1 (n = 23), the most frequently reported elements of well-being included physical health (n = 26), work-life balance (n = 20), and personal relationships (n = 18). For study 2 (n = 25), the highest rated elements included mental and emotional health, [general] health, work-life balance, and love. Work-life balance, physical health, and personal relationships were in the top five most frequently reported and were rated in the top 12 most central. Overall, ratings of centrality and the number of times reported were positively correlated (r = 0.33, P < .005). For study 3 (n = 17), confirmatory analyses did not reach statistical significance (P = .15). CONCLUSIONS Physical health, work-life balance, and personal relationships are key characteristics of well-being for intensive care nurses. Mental, emotional, and general health and work-life balance were considered most important for well-being. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Physical health, work-life balance, and personal relationships are key characteristics of well-being for intensive care nurses. These characteristics of the broad construct of well-being are helpful in both defining and identifying conceptual models of well-being that may be used to inform the development and measurement of well-being programmes.

Abstract
Nursing students experience higher levels of stress and more sleep-related problems than other students; however, the relationship of chronotype to nursing students' sleep status and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is unclear. This cross-sectional, observational study investigated whether chronotype affected Japanese nursing college students' sleep and HRQOL. Nursing students completed the Attribute Questionnaire about Subject Background, Japanese Version Morningness‒Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Munich Chrono-Type Questionnaire‒Japanese Version (MCTQ), Japanese Version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), SF-12v2 Standard, Japanese Version 2.0 (SF-12), Japanese Translation of Profile of Mood States 2nd Edition‒Adult Short (POMS2). Of the 241 students (mean age 20.16 ± 1.80 years; 80.9% female), 80 (33.2%) had evening, 142 (58.9%) had intermediate, and 19 (7.9%) had morning chronotype. The overall total PSQI score was 6.86 ± 2.97. Additionally, 141 students (64.1%) scored ≥ 6, suggesting disturbed sleep. Approximately 80% of the evening chronotype students had a total PSQI score of 8.34 ± 3.11, clearly indicating disturbed sleep. Sleep-related parameters (total PSQI score, bedtime, sleep latency, wake-up time, sleep duration, social jetlag) were worse in evening than in other chronotypes. SF-12 and POMS2 did not differ among chronotypes. Thus, evening chronotype nursing students require sleep-related support from early on.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nursing is a satisfying employment pathway, as nurses preserve lives, but it is also considered one of the most stressful care professions. Nursing is a lifesaving and highly satisfying profession, yet it is considered one of the most stressful occupations. This study aimed to assess differences in anxiety, depression and stress states among nurses according to gender, work history, shift and body mass index (BMI) characteristics. (2) Methods: An online questionnaire was addressed to all Italian nurses during May 2022, investigating anxiety, depression and stress conditions according to the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) and sampling characteristics, such as sex, work experience, shift and BMI values. (3) Results: A total of 408 Italian nurses answered the questionnaire. Significant differences between the following were reported: anxiety levels and work experience, since nurses employed over 6 years reported higher anxiety levels than their younger colleagues (p = 0.035); depression levels and sex (p = 0.017), as females reported higher depression levels than males; and also between depression levels and BMI levels (p = 0.003), as 5.90% of overweight and 2.50% of obese participants reported extremely severe depression. By considering stress levels according to sampling characteristics, significant differences were registered according to BMI levels (p < 0.001), as overweight subjects reported higher stress levels (7.40%) than the other subgroups. Finally, significant associations were recorded between anxiety, depression and stress conditions with sex, work experience, shift and BMI. (4) Conclusions: The data were in agreement with the current literature, indicating that nurses might take care not only of their patients but also of themselves, in both the physical and mental aspects.

Abstract
Shift work is known to be associated with poor health outcomes, however our understanding of health behaviours (sleep, physical activity and nutritional intake) longitudinally in shift workers is currently limited. Systematic searches of four data bases were conducted. Using PRISMA-ScR guidelines we report a scoping review of 15 eligible studies. Of the included studies, 11 studies examined sleep outcomes, three examined physical activity and two examined nutritional intake. The number of follow ups conducted in each study varied from one to six, with the majority of studies reporting one follow up. Study length varied from six months to 16 years. Findings suggest that shift workers have stable but largely insufficient sleep longitudinally. Many shift workers, particularly inexperienced shift workers, are additionally experiencing poor sleep quality. There is limited data longitudinally on physical inactivity and nutrition intake, but included studies indicate that shift workers may also be physical inactive and with some poor nutritional intake (i.e., high levels of saturated fat intake). Longitudinal studies of shift work with multiple follow-ups are needed to address the current gaps in literature. The evidence that shift workers may be susceptible to poor health behaviours longitudinally is important as it provides a means by which strategies and interventions can be targeted, at both individual and organisational levels, to assist in better long term health outcomes.

Abstract
Healthcare providers without working experience in isolation wards experience enormous challenges. Traditional ward orientation is constrained by space, time, and even infection risk in particular periods (eg, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic). Virtual reality has been used widely, but rarely in wards. This study aimed to explore the experience of utilizing virtual reality for isolation ward training among nurses. In this study, nurses completed virtual reality training via an online platform and were then trained in isolation wards, after which their perceptions were explored by questionnaire and interviews. A total of 1868 participants completed the training. Most participants thought the preservice training was important and believed the virtual reality experience was consistent with the in-person training. Virtual reality was found not only to be convenient and valuable for training but also to have the benefits of occupational protection. However, whereas 50.48% of participants wanted to learn the ward via virtual reality, 87.21% of participants wanted to learn via in-person training before working in the wards. As a substitute for in-person training, virtual reality is a feasible and practical instrument to provide preservice training in particular periods. However, there is room for improvement due to general discomfort and technological problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The contribution of work to positive mental health is increasingly apparent. Transition into the workplace causes a range of stressors for new graduate nurses who experience both psychological wellbeing and illbeing in their first year of practice. OBJECTIVE To determine published prevalence, predictors, barriers and enablers of new graduate registered nurse wellbeing, work wellbeing and mental health. DESIGN Systematic review of quantitative research. DATA SOURCES Databases included Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Excerpta Medica database, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and Psychological Information. Quantitative and mixed-methods studies were considered for inclusion if published in English from 2009 to 2019 reporting primary data analysis including new graduate nurses' wellbeing, work wellbeing and mental health. REVIEW METHODS Quantitative studies were systematically identified then screened and appraised against pre-determined inclusion criteria. Analysis was conducted by grouping according to analytical methods and results reported as a narrative synthesis. RESULTS Thirty-four studies were included. The quality of the evidence was variable with just a quarter of the studies being assessed as meeting the quality criteria on all nine measures. For the new graduate nurses prevalence of wellbeing, levels of resilience, optimism, and hope were found to be high. For work wellbeing, most reported higher job satisfaction by 12-months. For work illbeing, levels of burnout were moderately high, predominantly in terms of emotional exhaustion, and stress was initially high, particularly in terms of workload, but decreased over time. For the predictors, job satisfaction was positively predicted by structural empowerment and career satisfaction, and negatively predicted by co-worker incivility, supervisor incivility and emotional exhaustion. For work illbeing, stress was a positive predictor for intent to leave. Stress reductions were associated with momentary levels of high task mastery, social acceptance and role clarity. CONCLUSIONS For new graduate nurses, levels of emotional exhaustion, workload and stress were moderately high to high initially, decreasing over time as the graduate nurses' job satisfaction increased. Most studies focused on the nurses' intent to resign or stay and both psychological capital and work engagement positively predicted intent to stay whereas work stress positively predicted intent to resign. Resilience and group cohesion moderated the negative effects of some variables, thus may be potential enablers of work wellbeing. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses report the greatest stress of all health care workers. Although physical activity (PA) is associated with health benefits among other populations, nurses have stressors that other occupations do not typically encounter. It is important for nurses to identify techniques for stress management since stressors negatively impact their health and patient care. OBJECTIVE We aimed to examine the relationship between PA levels and physical, mental, and occupational health among nurses. METHODS Nurses (N = 62) completed measures of anthropometrics, demographics, and domains of physical, mental, and occupational health. Pearson correlations determined the relationship between PA and measures health along with the relationship between PA and health among active versus inactive nurses. RESULTS Fatigue was significantly correlated with moderate-to-vigorous PA (r = -0.27, p < 0.05). Relationships were found between mental health and light and moderate intensity PA (r = 0.40, p < 0.001; r = 0.30, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Stress is prevalent among nurses and negatively impacts a nurse's health along with patient care. Findings suggest health benefits associated with PA among nurses. PA interventions among nurses may be needed to fully see the effects of PA on physical, mental, and occupational health, and ultimately patient health and safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the harmful effects of night shifts and rotating schedules on nurses' sleep and work performance, shift nurses' sleep patterns have been a research concern. Actigraphy involves acquisition of data using a movement sensor worn continuously on the nondominant wrist, typically for a week or more. Although actigraphy provides objective and accurate sleep data, sleep diaries have been a practical alternative. However, there is a lack of research on the agreement and consistency between the two methods of measuring sleep for shift work nurses. In addition, differences in sleep patterns by shift types among 8-hour fast-rotating shift work nurses has not yet been examined. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the agreement between the sleep diary and actigraphy methods for sleep assessment, and to compare sleep parameters of 8-hour fast-rotating shift work nurses according to shift type. DESIGN Descriptive and prospective study design. SETTINGS Two tertiary hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. PARTICIPANTS A total of 94 shift work nurses who wore actigraphy along with completing a sleep diary. METHODS Subjective and objective sleep parameters were recorded during a two-week period in a sleep diary and actigraphy, respectively. Bland-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficients were used to analyze the agreement between the two methods. Sleep parameters according to shift type were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS Good agreement was observed between the sleep diary and the actigraphy data for total sleep time (intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.765 or 0.858) and variability in sleep time (intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.838). When compared to the actigraphy data, diary-derived data were overestimated by 41-45 min for total sleep time and 0.4% for variability in sleep time. There was a difference of 2-3 h of sleep quantity by shift type: 5.3-5.8 h for day shifts and 7.1-8.4 h for night shifts. CONCLUSIONS A sleep diary can function as an acceptable alternative to actigraphy for measuring shift work nurses' sleep patterns, specifically total sleep time and variability in sleep time. Given the high variability in sleep among shift work nurses, both personal and organizational efforts are required. Nurses should monitor their sleep quantity and develop their own regular sleep schedules to fit their work schedules. Hospitals should establish healthy schedules for nurses to guarantee sufficient sleep hours before work. Future research on shift work nurses' sleep should examine fluctuations in sleep duration.

Abstract
Objectives: In a prospective study among workers in an airline company, we explored whether change in work stress symptoms or night shifts was associated with nutrient intake. Methods: Participants in a workplace type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevention study completed a questionnaire on lifestyle, work stress symptoms, work schedule, and food intake at baseline and after 2.4-years follow-up (211 men and 155 women, 93% with increased risk for T2D). Multiple linear regression models with covariates were used to explore the associations between change in work stress symptoms or night shifts and change in nutrient intake during the follow-up. Results: Among men, an increase in stress and a decrease in perceived workability was associated with a higher proportion of energy (E%) from fat [β 0.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.07–1.11, β 1.3, 95% CI 0.57–2.05] and saturated fat (β 0.3, 95% CI 0.02–0.58, β 0.5, 95% CI 0.14–0.90), respectively. Furthermore, a decrease in workability was associated with lower vitamin C intake (β -9.2, 95% CI -16.56– -1.84) and an increase in sleepiness with higher E% from saturated fat (β 0.7, 95% CI 0.00–0.15). Among women, an increase in work-related fatigue was associated with higher alcohol intake (β 7.5, 95% CI 1.25–13.74) and an increase of night shifts was associated with higher E% from fat (β 0.24, 95% CI 0.00–0.47) and saturated fat (β 0.17, 95% CI 0.04–0.29). Conclusions: Work stress symptoms were associated with a reduction in diet quality especially among men. The possible impact of work stress symptoms on workers’ dietary habits should be acknowledged and the assessment of dietary habits should consequently be incorporated into occupational health examinations.

Abstract
Nurses experience psychosocial work stress that may negatively affect physical and mental health over time. In this cross-sectional study we investigated prevalence of job stress and oxidative stress in nurses, and determined if significant relationships exist between higher job stress scores and demographic factors and working conditions. Emergency department nurses (n = 42) were recruited from a University Hospital following Institutional Review Board approval. Job stress indicators, effort-reward ratio and overcommitment were evaluated from survey questionnaires using the effort-reward imbalance model, and associations with age, sex, body mass index, and working conditions were measured by logistic regression analysis. Oxidative stress biomarkers, 8-isoprostane, malondialdehyde, and antioxidant levels were measured from urine specimens. Job stress was prevalent with effort-reward ratio > 1 in 93% and overcommitment > 50 in 83% of the study participants. Age, body mass index, years of experience, weekend work, work hours per week, and shift work showed strong associations with effort-reward ratio and overcommitment scores. Malondialdehyde was higher in participants with high overcommitment. We report that psychosocial job stress is prevalent among nurses, as revealed by the high effort-reward and overcommitment scores. Job stress may be reduced through implementation of appropriate stress reduction interventions.
