Abstract
Selenium is a trace mineral essential for life that acts physiologically through selenoproteins. Among other actions, the endogenous antioxidant selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase and the selenium transporter in blood, selenoprotein P, seem to play an important role in type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance by weakening the insulin signaling cascade through different mechanisms. Recent findings also suggest that selenoproteins also affect insulin biosynthesis and insulin secretion. This review discussed the role of selenium in type 2 diabetes and the complex interplay between selenoproteins and insulin pathways.

Abstract
It is rapidly increasing to have selenium (Se) supplementation for urban elderly population in China since they are facing a widespread deficiency daily Se intake. However, until now, there is no low-cost, non-invasive, rapid, and reliable method to monitor the health improvement or risk for elderly Se-supplemented population in China. The present cross-sectional study (229 participants with older than 55 years old) performed in Beijing, China, revealed that the Se concentrations of non-supplementer users (n = 27) were 55 ± 23 μg/L in urine, 139.9 ± 102.3 μg/L in serum, and 487.6 ± 158.7 μg/kg in hair. But a significant increase on hair Se concentrations (615.4 ± 238.8 μg/kg) was observed for Se supplementer users (n = 202) (p < 0.05); there were no significant statistical differences in serum and urine between the Se-supplemented (n = 202) and Se non-supplemented groups (n = 27). This indicated the hair Se levels could be a more sensitive biomarker for Se-supplemented elderly population. Participants who consumed Se supplements for 7-12 months had the highest Se status based on hair and serum Se concentrations (p < 0.05). The present study also revealed that most elderly adults in Beijing just need to supplement 50 μg Se per day to achieve Se plateau status. Furthermore, hair Se levels were positively related with triglycerides/TG levels (p < 0.05) but not body mass index/BMI, total cholesterol/TC, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/LDL, implicating Se supplementation for Se sufficiency baseline in elderly population in Beijing likely posed health risk, especially on TG because of excessive Se oxidation stress. An ongoing monitoring of Se status via hair is still warranted to prevent future Se deficiency or excess in China.

Abstract
Selenoprotein P (SeP), a member of hepatokines, is involved in the development of various metabolic diseases closely related to psoriasis, but it has not been explored in that dermatosis so far. The study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of serum SeP concentrations in patients with psoriasis and its interplay between disease activity, metabolic or inflammatory parameters and systemic therapy. The study included thirty-three patients with flared plaque-type psoriasis and fifteen healthy volunteers. Blood samples were collected before and after three months of treatment with methotrexate or acitretin. Serum SeP levels were evaluated using the immune–enzymatic method. SeP concentration was significantly higher in patients with psoriasis than in the controls (p < 0.05). Further, in patients with severe psoriasis, SeP was significantly increased, compared with the healthy volunteers before treatment, and significantly decreased after (p < 0.05, p = 0.041, respectively). SeP positively correlated with C-reactive protein and platelets and negatively with red blood counts (p = 0.008, p = 0.013, p = 0.022, respectively). Therapy resulted in a significant decrease in SeP level. Selenoprotein P may be a novel indicator of inflammation and the metabolic complications development in psoriatics, especially with severe form or with concomitant obesity. Classic systemic therapy has a beneficial effect on reducing the risk of comorbidities by inhibiting SeP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In many studies, selenium supplementation decreased serum titers of thyroid antibodies. The aim of the study was to investigate whether statin therapy determines selenium action on thyroid autoimmunity. METHODS This prospective case-control study enrolled 42 euthyroid women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and normal vitamin D status, 20 of whom had been treated with atorvastatin (40 mg daily) for at least 6 months. All patients received selenomethionine (200 µg daily) for 6 months. Plasma levels of lipids, serum titers of thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin (TgAb) antibodies, as well as serum levels of thyrotropin, free thyroid hormones, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were determined at the beginning and at the end of the study. RESULTS At baseline, there were no differences between both treatment arms in plasma lipids, titers of thyroid antibodies, serum levels of thyrotropin, free thyroid hormones, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Selenometionine decreased titers of TPOAb (from 843 ± 228 to 562 ± 189 U/mL) and TgAb (from 795 ± 286 to 501 ± 216 U/mL) in atorvastatin-treated women, as well as titers of TPOAb (from 892 ± 247 to 705 ± 205 U/mL) and TgAb (from 810 ± 301 to 645 ± 224 U/mL) in statin-naive women. The changes in antibody titers were more pronounced in women receiving atorvastatin (between-group difference: 94 [32-156] [TPOAb]; 129 [52-206] [TgAb]). Treatment-induced changes in TPOAb and TgAb correlated positively with baseline thyroid antibody titers. Circulating levels of lipids, free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D remained at similar levels throughout the study. CONCLUSIONS The obtained results indicate that the decrease in titers of thyroid antibodies was potentiated by atorvastatin use.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential mineral naturally found in soil, water, and some of the food. As an antioxidant, it is one of the necessary trace elements in human body and has been suggested as a dietary supplement for health benefit. Although the human body only needs a trace amount of selenium every day, plenty of recent studies have revealed that selenium is indispensable for maintaining normal functions of metabolism. In this study, we reviewed the antioxidant role of nutritional supplementation of selenium in the management of major chronic metabolic disorders, including hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, and hyperphenylalaninemia. Clinical significance of selenium deficiency in chronic metabolic diseases was elaborated, while clinical and experimental observations of dietary supplementation of selenium in treating chronic metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and phenylketonuria, were summarized. Toxicity and recommended dose of selenium were discussed. The mechanism of action was also proposed via inspecting the interaction of molecular networks and predicting target protein such as xanthine dehydrogenase in various diseases. Future direction in studying the role of selenium in metabolic disorders was also highlighted. In conclusion, highlighting the beneficial role of selenium in this review would advance our knowledge of the dietary management of chronic metabolic diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Higher selenium level has been hypothesized to have the potential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases including dyslipidemia. However, results from previous studies are inconsistent. This study aims to determine the association between selenium level and dyslipidemia in elderly Chinese with relatively low selenium status. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 1859 participants aged 65 or older from four rural counties in China was conducted. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDLC) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDLC), nail selenium concentration and APOE genotype were measured in all subjects. The four types of dyslipidemia were defined as >5.17 mmol/L for High-TC, >1.69 mmol/L for High-TG, >3.36 mmol/L for High-LDLC, and <1.04 mmol/L for Low-HDLC according to Chinese Guidelines on Prevention and Treatment of Dyslipidemia in Adults. Logistic models adjusting for age, gender, APOE genotype, body mass index, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, medication use for cardiovascular diseases were used to examine the relationship between selenium levels and the risk of dyslipidemia. RESULTS Mean nail selenium concentration was 0.465 μg/gin this sample. Rates for High-TC, High-LDLC, High-TG, Low-HDLC were 18.13%, 13.23%, 12.21% and 32.76% respectively. Results from logistic models indicated that higher selenium levels were significantly associated with higher risk of High-TC, High-LDLC and lower risk of Low-HDLC adjusting for covariates (p < 0.0001). Compared with the lowest selenium quartile group, participants in selenium quartile groups 2, 3 and 4 had significantly higher rates of High-TC, High-LDLC, High-TG, and lower rate of Low-HDLC adjusting for covariates. No significant association was observed between selenium level and the risk of High-TG. APOEε4 carriers had higher rates of High-TC and High-LDLC. There was no interaction between selenium level and APOE with the rates of dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest long-term selenium exposure level may be associated with the risk of dyslipidemia in elderly population. Future studies are needed to examine the underlying mechanism of the association.
