Abstract
BACKGROUND Adequate energy and protein provision is mandatory to optimize survival chances in critical illness, prevent loss of muscle mass, and reduce length of stay. Data are available concerning feeding adequacy in intensive care unit (ICU) participants, but little is known about the adequacy in post-ICU participants. This systematic review aimed to evaluate feeding adequacy in post-ICU participants and addressed causes of feeding interruption leading to suboptimal adequacy. METHODS For this systematic review, a bibliographic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Randomized controlled studies, non-randomized controlled studies, and observational studies conducted between January 1990 and November 2023 fulfilling the inclusion criteria were withheld. RESULTS Eight studies were included. Outcomes reported were energy and protein adequacy, barriers, and feeding routes. Energy and protein requirements were determined in various ways, including indirect calorimetry and standardized and weight-based formulas. Energy adequacy ranged from 52% to 102% and protein adequacy between 63% and 86%. Participants were mainly fed with enteral nutrition (EN) or a combination of oral nutrition and EN. The main barrier reported for inadequate nutrition intake was feeding tube removal. CONCLUSION Next to different ways in calculating targets and reporting results, a wide range in energy and protein adequacy was observed, but with constant protein underfeeding. Participants fed with EN or a combination of EN and oral nutrition had the best adequacy; inappropriate tube removal is a common barrier leading to inadequate therapy. Standardized reporting and larger studies are needed to guide nutrition care for post-ICU participants.

Abstract
Liver cancer represents a grave hepatic condition and constitutes a significant global health concern. Surgical resection remains the principal therapeutic modality for liver cancer. Nevertheless, perioperative malnutrition exerts a notable impact on patients with liver cancer, emerging as an independent risk factor for disease mortality and adverse outcomes. Hence, precise nutritional diagnosis and timely nutritional support hold the potential to enhance therapeutic efficacy and quality of life for liver cancer patients. This study represents a meticulous foray into the literature, extracting data from PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases, with a focus on the past 5 years. It scrutinizes the impact of malnutrition on patients undergoing liver cancer surgery, the etiological underpinnings of malnutrition within this patient cohort, the critical assessment of perioperative nutritional status, and the strategic approaches to nutritional support. Utilizing rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, the amassed scholarly works are meticulously synthesized, methodically organized, and categorically elaborated upon. Ultimately, the authors propose the incorporation of a multidisciplinary nutrition management team during the perioperative period, comprising nutritionists, pharmacists, physicians, nurses, psychologists, and rehabilitation therapists, among other specialized professionals. Together, they collaborate to devise and implement personalized nutritional support plans, monitor patients' nutritional status, and make necessary adjustments as required. Through comprehensive management and intervention, improvements in the nutritional status of liver cancer patients can be achieved, thereby enhancing surgical success rates and facilitating postoperative recovery. It is believed that this manuscript will offer valuable insights to advance the nutritional management during the perioperative phase of liver cancer, aiding in ameliorating patients' nutritional status and treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Intestinal failure is defined as the inability to absorb the minimum of macro and micronutrients, minerals and vitamins due to a reduction in gut function. In a subpopulation of patients with a dysfunctional gastrointestinal system, treatment with total or supplemental parenteral nutrition is required. The golden standard for the determination of energy expenditure is indirect calorimetry. This method enables an individualized nutritional treatment based on measurements instead of equations or body weight calculations. The possible use and advantages of this technology in a home PN setting need critical evaluation. For this narrative review, a bibliographic search is performed in PubMed and Web of Science using the following terms: 'indirect calorimetry', 'home parenteral nutrition', 'intestinal failure', 'parenteral nutrition', 'resting energy expenditure', 'energy expenditure' and 'science implementation'. The use of IC is widely embedded in the hospital setting but more research is necessary to investigate the role of IC in a home setting and especially in IF patients. It is important that scientific output is generated in order to improve patients' outcome and develop nutritional care paths.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major burn patients have been shown to exhibit a hyper-metabolic state of activity which can persist for up to two years after burn. The relationship between total body surface area (TBSA) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) has been investigated in larger burns (≥20% TBSA), however not in non-severe burns (≤15% TBSA). The primary aim of this observational study was to examine the association between the acute effects of burns <15% TBSA with RMR in patients using indirect calorimetry, as well as any potential covariates. The secondary aim was to determine 24-h energy balance. METHODS The study included data from 39 participants (82% male), all admitted to the State Adult Burn Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Each patient was recruited upon admission and RMR data was collected on day four (± one day) after burn. RESULTS The pooled data bivariate correlation showed a significant relationship between RMR and TBSA (r=0.435, p=0.009). A stronger relationship was also found between RMR and TBSA in males (r=0.634, p=0.001). Patients recorded a caloric deficit of 116kcal/day. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that a moderately strong linear association exists between RMR and TBSA in males for burns of ≤15% TBSA. The energy balance data indicated that supplementation of calorific intake for non-severe burns suggests careful consideration.

Abstract
The subjective global assessment (SGA) is a nutrition assessment tool that refers to an overall evaluation of a patient's history and physical examination and uses structured clinical parameters to diagnose malnutrition. The SGA is known to be a reliable and valid tool that predicts morbidity and mortality associated with malnutrition. The objective of SGA is to identify patients likely to benefit from nutrition intervention and therefore to identify persons in whom inadequate nutrition intake or absorption explain features of malnutrition, including body wasting. There are other conditions that cause weight loss, muscle wasting, and fat loss, including cachexia and sarcopenia. Acknowledging that these 2 last conditions differ in their mechanism of body wasting and consequently in the outcomes of nutrition intervention, the practitioner needs a tool to identify when malnutrition is the dominating factor to explain body wasting. The SGA form has been revised to clearly reflect the key concepts behind the diagnosis of malnutrition and help to distinguish this condition from other wasting conditions. This review presents the revised SGA form and guidance document. Using case studies, it illustrates the 3 wasting conditions, their overlap, and how the SGA identifies malnutrition as a dominating factor of body wasting and thus individuals who require nutrition intervention.

Abstract
Some studies have reported inaccuracy of predicting basal metabolic rate (BMR) by using common equations for Asian people. Thus, this study was undertaken to develop new predictive equations for the Iranian community and also to compare their accuracy with the commonly used formulas. Anthropometric measures and thyroid function were evaluated for 267 healthy subjects (18-60 y). Indirect calorimetry (InCal) was performed only for those participants with normal thyroid function tests (n = 252). Comparison of predicted RMR (both kcal/d and kcal.kg.wt-1.d-1) using current predictive formulas and measured RMR revealed that Harris-Benedict and FAO/WHO/UNU significantly over-estimated and Mifflin-St. Jeor significantly under-estimated RMR as compared to InCal measurements. In stepwise regression analysis for developing new equations, the highest r2 (=0.89) was from a model comprising sex, height and weight. However, further analyses revealed that unlike the subjects under 30 y, the association between age and the measured RMR in subjects 30 y and plus was negative (r = -0.241, p = 0.001). As a result, two separate equations were developed for these two age groups. Over 80 percent of variations were covered by the new equations. In conclusion, there were statistical significant under- and over-estimation of RMR using common predictive equations in our subjects. Using the new equations, the accuracy of the calculated RMR increased remarkably.
