Association of meal and snack patterns with micronutrient intakes among Greek children and adolescents: data from the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey

Snack frequency, size, and energy density are associated with diet quality among US adolescents

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate snacking and diet quality among US adolescents.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional analysis examined snack frequency (snacks/day), size (kcal/snack) and energy density (kcal/g/snack) as predictors of diet quality using the mean of two 24-h dietary recalls. Diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2015, 0-100), a mean adequacy ratio (MAR, 0-100) for under-consumed nutrients (potassium, fibre, Ca, vitamin D) and mean percentage of recommended limits for over-consumed nutrients (added sugar, saturated fat, Na). Linear regression models examined total snacks, food only snacks and beverage only snacks, as predictors of diet quality adjusting for demographic characteristics and estimated energy reporting accuracy.

2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

PARTICIPANTS

Adolescents 12-19 years (n 4985).

RESULTS

Snack frequency was associated with higher HEI-2015 (β = 0·7 (0·3), P < 0·05) but also with higher intake of over-consumed nutrients (β = 3·0 (0·8), P ≤ 0·001). Snack size was associated with lower HEI (β = -0·005 (0·001), P ≤ 0·001) and MAR (β = -0·005 (0·002), P < 0·05) and higher intake of over-consumed nutrients (β = 0·03 (0·005), P ≤ 0·001). Associations differed for food only and beverage only snacks. Food only snack frequency was associated with higher HEI-2015 (β = 1·7 (0·03), P ≤ 0·001), while food only snack size (β = -0·006 (0·0009), P ≤ 0·001) and food only snack energy density (β = -1·1 (0·2), P ≤ 0·001) were associated with lower HEI-2015. Conversely, beverage only snack frequency (β = 4·4 (2·1) P < 0·05) and beverage only snack size (β = 0·03 (0·01), P ≤ 0·001) were associated with higher intake of over-consumed nutrients.

CONCLUSIONS

Smaller, frequent, less energy-dense food only snacks are associated with higher diet quality in adolescents; beverages consumed as snacks are associated with greater intake of over-consumed nutrients.

Iron Nutrition of Pre-Schoolers in High-Income Countries: A Review

Pre-schoolers are vulnerable to iron deficiency, which, in high-resource countries, is mainly caused by suboptimal or poorly absorbable iron intakes. This review examines the prevalence of inadequate iron intakes and status, and the non-dietary factors associated with these, among children aged between 2 and 5 years within high-income countries. It then considers the quality of the pre-schooler diet in terms of dietary factors, dietary patterns, and iron intakes. Additionally, it discusses the assessment of iron bioavailability and examines the various methods used to estimate the amount of absorbable iron in pre-schooler diets. Knowledge of the adequacy of iron intakes and bioavailability of iron intakes, and dietary patterns associated with iron intakes can facilitate the design and implementation of effectively targeted community-based intervention studies to improve iron intakes and iron bioavailability to minimise the risk of iron deficiency.

Investigation and Strategy Research on Dietary Nutrition Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of Athletes

The goal of this paper is to learn more about the nutritional knowledge, attitude, and behavior of teenager trampoline athletes to improve their dietary nutritional levels as well as their sports performance. The questionnaires were designed on athletes’ diet nutrition knowledge, and the questionnaire surveys were conducted on the selected teenager trampoline athletes aged 10–17 as the survey object. Dietary nutrition knowledge, attitude, and behavior are significantly correlated with the total score $\left(P<0.05\right)$ ; dietary nutrition knowledge and dietary nutrition behavior are significantly correlated $\left(P<0.05\right)$ ; dietary nutrition attitude and dietary nutrition behavior are also significantly correlated $\left(P<0.05\right)$ ; dietary nutrition knowledge and dietary nutrition attitude are not strongly correlated $\left(P>0.05\right)$ . The average score of dietary nutrition knowledge of teenager trampoline athletes is $6.5\pm 1.7$ (failing). The nutritional knowledge of teenager trampoline athletes is not systematic and the quality of nutrition information obtained by teenager trampoline athletes is low. The average score of dietary nutrition attitude of teenager trampoline athletes is $7.1\pm 1.8$ (good). The average score of dietary nutrition behavior is $13.4\pm 3.1$ (moderate). Teenager trampoline athletes mainly rely on coaches, relatives, and friends to obtain nutritional knowledge. Therefore, the correct eating habits need to be strengthened and their dietary nutrition behaviors need to be reasonably monitored. Suggestions will include providing relevant nutrition courses, increasing athletes’ awareness of the importance of dietary nutrition, and using professional dietitians for dietary nutrition matching and monitoring.

Obesity: Assessment and prevention: Module 23.2 from Topic 23 "Nutrition in obesity"

Obesity is one the major health problems of today showing an increasing prevalence among most countries. It is associated with increased risk of several diseases. The importance of early life strategies in the prevention of obesity is well established, whereas, in general, breastfed infants tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI) than formula-fed infants. There seem to be a series of behavioral and hormonal mechanisms that explain this difference. Lifestyle plays a crucial role in the development of overweight and/or obesity and targeted lifestyle modifications have an important impact on preventing obesity. In particular, sedentary behavior (viewing television, playing video games, doing cognitive work, and listening to music) and reduced overall physical activity along with shorter sleep duration promote the overconsumption of dietary macronutrients leading to obesity; at the same time physical activity or exercise in a sufficient dose seems to better facilitate long-term maintenance of new lower body weight. There is enough discussion about a potential effect of nutrients on obesity. Nevertheless, the most the crucial parameter regarding weight loss and prevention of obesity is to achieve a negative energy balance. In regard to specific diet regimes, again energy balance rather that any specific macronutrients composition and/or favoring of low glycemic index products, seems to be have a stronger effect on maintenance of lower weight after 12 months. It has to be noted, that for specific sup groups, obesity or overweight might be showing some favorable trends in survival. In particular, "obesity paradox" (OP) refers to an overall prognosis that is no worse and may even be better in some groups than non-obese patients. The OP could be explained by the fact that current classifications of obesity based on BMI may place together, in the same category, subjects with very different clinical and biochemical characteristics.

Association Between Serum Lipid Levels in Greek Children with Dyslipidemia and Mediterranean Diet Adherence, Dietary Habits, Lifestyle and Family Socioeconomic Factors

Background: Childhood dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Our study aimed to investigate a possible correlation between nutritional, lifestyle, behavioral and socioeconomic factors and serum lipid levels in children with dyslipidemia. Methods: In this retrospective, observational study, in 31 children with dyslipidemia, aged 3–14 years, dietary habits, physical activity, hours watching television or playing video games, family’s socioeconomic status, weight of children and parents, and duration of breastfeeding were recorded. The children’s adherence to the Mediterranean diet was also evaluated by KidMed index. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS.22. Results: Children with increased physical activity had lower triglyceride levels, compared to those with lower physical activity (p = 0.001). Children who consumed only one meal per day, had increased levels of total cholesterol (p = 0.01), LDL-cholesterol (p = 0.01), ApoB (p = 0.001) and lipoprotein (a) (p = 0.018), compared to those who consumed more than 3 meals per day (p < 0.05). Children who were breastfed less than 6 months had significantly increased LDL-C levels (p = 0.022), compared to children who were breastfed more than 6 months. All other parameters investigated did not differ significantly. Conclusions: This study showed association between lipid profile of children with dyslipidemia and specific nutritional and socioeconomic factors, such as increased physical activity, increased meals consumption during the day, and exclusive breastfeeding for more than 6 months. Nevertheless, further research is needed, in order to confirm these findings.
